$1700 for a thin and light machine for gaming, software development, videos, and web browsing

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 03:36 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2000, prefer to spend $1700 or less. USD, in USA.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is a higher priority than a 2 in 1 form factor, but a 2-in-1 (or at least something with a touchscreen that's usable with a stylus) would still be great. Once the battery life is more than 4 hours without battery saver mode / 8 hours in battery saver mode, any more is excessive.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Total weight (including power supply, unless it accepts power over USB-C) needs to be under 5 pounds. I'd like to be able to toss it into my bag with my work laptop, so it should be less than 0.85 inches thick.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" to 15", preferably 14" to 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I need to be able to do basic web development (NodeJS) but otherwise most programs that I need to run can run on any modern hardware. I would like to have a touchscreen and possibly a stylus for the sake of taking notes / doodling, but I'm not doing any serious visual art and the lack of a touch screen would not be a dealbreaker.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I mostly play Elder Scrolls Online (optimally at Ultra / 60 FPS) and Dark Souls 1-3 (60 FPS). I'd like to be able to play Monster Hunter World (60 FPS), Soul Calibur 6 (60 FPS), Hollow Knight: Silksong, and potentially drive the Oculus Quest.

Some background: I recently upgraded my gaming laptop (I initially got the Dell G3 w/ the 1660 Ti Max Q, but I upgraded to the HP Omen w/ a 144 Hz screen and a 1660 Ti) and also got a Lenovo Flex 14 with the AMD 3500U. I toss the smaller Flex 14 in my bag alongside my work laptop and then if I end up at a friend's place, a coffee shop, or whatever, I can both do general work and also jump on ESO to do dailies. If I'm going out of town for the weekend or planning to go somewhere to game, I'll bring the Omen. I spent about $1400 plus tax on those two laptops combined, and I realized that, with that higher budget, I could probably get a single laptop to fill both needs. I'd rather have a single laptop for a variety of reasons.

I'll end up using this more for writing, web browsing, and watching videos (YouTube, Netflix) than for gaming, so even if I game in 1080P, a 4k screen would still be nice. Gaming wise, this won't be my main machine when I'm home. I have a desktop with a Ryzen 3600X, an RTX 2080, and 32 gigs of 3600 MHz RAM and I have the Alienware 1440p Ultrawide as my primary monitor, so no laptop is going to compete there. However, when I upgrade my graphics card, I'll likely keep the 2080 and buy an enclosure, so Thunderbolt 3 on the laptop (or some other proven way to connect to such enclosures) is important.

I'm already carrying a USB-C MacBook charger in my work bag, so bonus points if the machine charges over USB-C / TB3, since then I don't need to pack an extra charger in my work bag. Otherwise I'll need to account for the weight of the charger + buy an extra.

I have a spare 1 TB SATA SSD, a 512 GB M.2 NVME SSD, and a 2 TB M.2 NVME SSD ready to upgrade whatever I get (preferably I'd install the SATA SSD and the machine would come with a 256 GB or better NVME drive installed), so a machine that doesn't come with much storage but is upgradeable would be fine. If it only has a single slot, that's when I'd use the 2 TB NVME drive.

I'm leaning toward the XPS 15 w/ the GTX 1650, an i7, and the 4K IPS Touchscreen ($1600 or so through the Dell site right now), but I'm a bit iffy about its thermal performance and the fact that it doesn't at least a 1660 Ti Max Q / 1070. The Aero Classic looks like a good alternative, but it doesn't seem to support charging over USB C and I think the power brick probably weighs about a pound. The other thing is that I don't think even a graphics card as good as the 1650/1050-Ti is required, but once I get up into the $1000+ price range, I basically expect it. A cheaper machine with great build quality, a nice touchscreen, and a good keyboard, as well as a GTX MX-250 or equivalent would also be of interest to me.

I'd love to hear about other general purpose machines that would do everything I want. It feels sorta like I'm searching for a unicorn.

Looking for a 1600 USD (gaming?) laptop in Hungary.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 04:14 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: Total budget 1600 USD, 1400 EUR, around 470000 HUF. Hungary, Europe.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I'd prefer a good battery and good specs.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's not that important, I'd like to carry it around in a backpack comfortably and use it on a couch mostly.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux/Windows dual boot. Have both.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not bigger than 15.6". 14" is fine.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Ableton with a bunch of vsts, VCV rack, making unity games.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Tekken 7 connected to a TV via HDMI.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like reliable build quality. Mainly for lap use I'd like a good touchpad and at least an okay keyboard.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thinkpad 20s series keyboard would be considered 10/10, current T440 7/10. Macbook touchpad 10/10, T440 5/10. I would use CPU heavy programs, lots of RAM and gaming on the side. I also wouldn't like it to get very hot when I'm sitting on the couch.

    Lesser than 16.1", Ideally 1440p or 1080p

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Video editing, Game coding and playing. Programming from simple android apps to some decently advanced AI-related stuff. Simple designing(No need touch screen tho)

My Asus x556ua just got short-circuited so currently on Acer Aspire V3-471G. Ideally, going to spring for an upgrade when ddr5 releases or when I am about to leave to college(Computer Engineering/ Science or triple E), whichever comes later. If you believe I might be able to squeeze more performance for my budget by opting for a desktop, please inform me, cuz I don't mind having my current laptop for school while having something more powerful for when I am working and playing at home.

Picking an AAA gaming laptop in 2019

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:41 AM PST

First of all a brief intro. It's been 5+ years since I've needed a new laptop and I've been on the market since August of this year. After 4 returned units and countless cancelled orders I've surveyed nearly everything on the market, and realized that a lot of points get left out in reviews and recommendations. Therefore I would like to share some of the finer and less discussed points of purchasing a gaming laptop in 2019.

The below mostly applies to AAA tier laptops above $1000 USD, are at least moderately portable, and purchased in the US. Budget models and desktop replacements are not within the range of this discussion.

    1. Size

It's not a matter of what you want, it's a matter of physics. Size and weight aside, 17" laptops have two major advantages over 15" variants. The displays are usually brighter, starting at 300 nits, and thermals are usually better due to having more room for cooling. They keyboards may also have deeper travel and usually have dedicated numpads. The one downside is that you'll likely be using the same FHD resolution on a 17" screen which may appear slightly, just slightly less sharp than a good 15" panel.

    2. Brightness

Coming back to the brightness issue stated above, a lot of gaming laptops released this year have really crappy brightness. Some people may be able to live with it, but for me personally I can't even look at a gaming screen that's lower than 300 nits. This includes some popular models such as the Asus Zephyrus S and MSI GS65, both under 300 nits and just terrible when compared side by side next to brighter displays. Most of the 240Hz panels are very dim as well, being all from a small handful of suppliers (eg. Sharp). Between a 144Hz and 240Hz currently available I'd go with the 144. It's highly recommended you walk into a physical store (Best Buy, Micro Center, etc.) and actually look at some models to get a feel of how important brightness is to you.

Edit: PWM is also a thing, I won't elaborate but Notebookcheck tests it on nearly every model.

    3. Thermals

I'm not going to get into an argument regarding thermals. I am however going to bring up the fact that factory paste is not going to last forever, and you WILL need to open up the laptop eventually in a year or three to reapply some toothpaste or in the very least clean the fans. What will you do then with that inverted motherboard? Take this into careful consideration when choosing your model.

    4. Sound

Let's face it, gaming laptops are loud. The difference is how loud, and how often. Sit in a quiet room and let it idle, maybe pull up some web searches. That's what it will sound like in a library.

    5. Keyboard/Trackpad

Do you need a numpad? If not, do you at least need PageUP/PageDN buttons? How important is the feel of the keyboard to you? Does that row of macro keys on the left side of the keyboard bother you? What about the trackpad? Again it is highly recommended you walk into a store to get a feel of what different models offer.

    6. Battery life

(Skip this section if you intend to use the laptop plugged in 24/7)

Gaming on battery is near impossible so we won't go into that. Battery for productivity however, can vary greatly. If like me you're looking for a balanced school/work/gaming laptop you're left with only a handful of options. At the end of the post is a list with some of the more well known models with half decent battery life of 5+ hours. The numbers listed are ideal runtimes. Do NOT buy an AAA ready gaming laptop expecting more than 6 hours of battery, you will be very disappointed.

    7. Ports

Thunderbolt 3 and RJ-45. These two are the major ones. Not gonna list all the options but if you need them you should make sure the models you're looking at have them. In the case of RJ-45 you may also want to see if it supports Gigabyte (1000MBps, not the company) Ethernet instead of the standard 100/10.

    8. Retail Store

This is a tricky one. Most major retailers can quickly turn into a nightmare when something goes wrong. I personally got a defective MSI GS75 at Best Buy and it took an hour to convince them that I didn't want to exchange for anything else in the store, and just wanted a refund. The best places to buy from are Dell and Lenovo with their free, no hassle return policies, followed by maybe something like Amazon. Not sure about Walmart. Avoid custom laptops during the holiday season, they cannot price match any sales and you'll be losing hundreds of dollars in discounts/cashback in addition to losing out the option to cancel/return the unit at will. If you can't find anything suitable during the holidays you can always go back to pay full price any other time of the year.

    9. Testing

DO test your laptop EXTENSIVELY after getting it. Take VIDEO of it the first time it boots. If Cortana doesn't talk during Windows 10 setup something is SEVERELY wrong. Yes, that happened. Check and take photos of the chassis, check the screen for dead pixels (here), type every key on the keyboard. Pull up a 4K demo video on Youtube make sure you like the brightness/colors of the display. Do the sound test as stated above, then run Forza Horizon 4 and listen to it scream on full blast. Turn your unit on/off a couple times, then run Memtest86 overnight to make sure the memory is good. Pull up a battery report, check hard drive space, check all your ports, test the Wifi. Do a video loop test overnight to see how much battery life you can expect. Undervolt and consider repasting within the return period if you feel inclined. I'll add more tests if I think of anything.

    Closing Thoughts:

Despite all the options on the market right now, there really isn't a perfect gaming laptop for this year. Every single model has a tradeoff save maybe Eluktronics which I personally am not discussing. That's your risk to take if you want to jump on a brand with limited product history. For everything else you need to weight your pros and cons and pick the closest to what you're looking for, or maybe just settle with a desktop this year and wait to see what next Thanksgiving brings us.

Feel free to PM me any other points or opinions. Thanks!

Which type of laptops are least prone to dust and environment?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:31 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1000 and India.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. But one of my top determination factor is that the laptop shouldn't be prone to dust and environment as I live in an untidy place.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Last priority but I don't want those rugged laptops.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I mandatory use Android Studio and some other programming stuff which requires a decent processing power and in the future I'd also require to use virtual machines.

Laptop for programming (game, mobile app, web development, etc.) on a limited budget?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 09:12 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: $500 - 600

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, if I had to choose only one but would like to have the other two as well (if possible).

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important.

Which OS do you require? LINUX.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A (anything adequate for my work/needs mentioned below would be great)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? None of the above but will be doing full-stack web development, game development, mobile app development (Android & iOS) and machine learning.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not into gaming at all on my work laptop.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Back-lit keyboard. Also, touch-screen would be nice if it could aid me in my programming ventures.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I wouldn't mind buying a laptop with low specs if I could easily upgrade parts in the future. I will also be running Mojave and W10 VMs on VirtualBox. My current Acer laptop (4GB RAM, 8th gen Core i3, no SSD) is a nightmare during coding and that's why I am looking for a better alternative.

Thanks, any help/advice is much appreciated.

Suggest a Laptop for Psychotherapist (US)

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:36 PM PST

    Country: US

    Budget: 1700

Use: Lengthy documentation, reversible / removable touch screen to sign documents, lightweight, good battery to last a work day, open multiple tabs.

Some details: Hello, I'm asking for advice regarding purchasing a laptop for my therapy practice. I need it to be reversible or detachable so that patients can sign documents easily with a touch screen. I need it to type well (I like the feedback of the surface book 2 keys and the dell xps keys felt too light for me). I need it to handle most games at low to medium settings when I engage patients in play therapy. In between patients I also like to play some War Thunder myself. I want to comfortably browse the internet and open multiple tabs in Chrome. I want to delete the pins from the start bar and have as little bloatware as possible, looking for a clean Windows experience on Windows 10. I also want to use the screen to view 2 documents at once in a split view.

I appreciate all the feedback, looking forward to reading the answers!

    Recommendations for a Laptop?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:11 PM PST

My current laptop is ~8 years old, so I'm long overdue for an upgrade.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Purchasing in Canada, no specific budget, just nothing super crazy expensive

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Preferably best specs for the cost. Battery life isn't overly important, as I often use my current laptop plugged in anyways

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not very important. My current laptop is pretty heavy, so I'm used to hefty machines.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** N/A

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** FFXIV, SWTOR. If I can't do 60 FPS it really isn't the end of the world. I mostly just wanna be able to play the games at default settings without lag. My current computer can barely handle basic MMOs on the lowest settings, and even then it lags like crazy.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Child's First Laptop

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:41 PM PST

Looking for a laptop for a 10-year-old boy

Total budget and country of purchase: around $500USD, could maybe go a hundred higher, USA

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for budget although a 2 in 1 might be nice

How important is weight and thinness to you? Needs to be on the lighter side since it's for a child, and he might have to take it to school, but will also compromise if it's sturdy enough for a hyperactive boy.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger than 10" but smaller than 15", I would think

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Minecraft, a drawing program, Scratch

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft, probably Vanilla but he might want to add mods. Assume he'll discover Steam soon enough

Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, need it to last

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Looking for a laptop for my 10-year old brother. He's into Minecraft, drawing and programming so ideally he'd get a laptop that would allow him to do all three. Not too phased if it isn't touch screen, as I could get him a separate drawing tablet.

Budget laptop for office work and very light gaming

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:34 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: Budget up to 600€, country of purchase is Europe

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Neither 2 in 1 form factor nor good battery is a necessity. I'd rather go for good specs for money value

How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like to get a 14" laptop that is rather light because i will carry it around a lot

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? 14" would be my desire

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only light gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? At the moment i am doing only basic gaming like WOW and LoL. Which should run at consistent 60 FPS at 1080p. If that's possible at this price range.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A nice feeling keyboard aswell as a decent touch pad would be great, also i would like to have an aluminium chassis if possible

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So the main purpose of my laptop would be office work. Since i am a student i will mostly use it for university, which is why i would prefer a small light laptop. In my freetime i like to do some gaming aswell. However the mentioned games are not that challenging, but i think i cant really ask for more performance at that price range. At home i plan to hook the laptop up to a monitor. So i would like to get a 14 inch, because its nice and handy for on the go, and at home i have the bigger screen anyway.

I am trying to go relatively low budget here because i am also planning on builiding a pc in the near future. Then i can even go for some more challenging games like Apex or maybe even witcher 3.

I have been searching for a while now and right now my favourites are:

    Acer Swift 3 SF314-41 https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07SC4NVZ5/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=acer+swift+3+sf314-41&qid=1575698555&sprefix=Acer+swift+3+&sr=8-3#mobile-twister_size_name_1575702553711

    Lenovo Ideapad S340 https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07T5NM248/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=Lenovo+ideapad+s340&qid=1575778217&sr=8-3

Do you guys have any recommendation or perhaps thoughts on the mentioned laptops

    Thank you for your help

$2000 AU Budget. Portable Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:30 PM PST

**Total budget and country of the purchase:**

$2000 dollars. Can exceed this amount. Australia

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

I don't need 2 in 1 form factor. If it is 2 in 1 however, that would be cool. As for the battery, all gaming will be done plugged into power. The battery needs to last at least 6 hours doing everyday tasks. The laptop will be used for hours on end so it absolutely needs good cooling OR non-restrictive vents. ie. the vents should not be underneath the laptop restricting airflow. This laptop needs to be very fast, good CPU. 8GB RAM minimum

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Important, I can carry heavier laptops if it's worth it. Weight of the charger battery pack should also be light

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    no more than 15 inches

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Yes, I use adobe editing programs often for hours at a time. I most often animate

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Rainbow Six, Subnautica, Sims, Minecraft, Warframe, Riders of Icarus, Lost Ember and Indie games. I have DOOM as well but this is a very performance heavy game and I'm not expecting a highly portable laptop to play it perfectly, if at all. Same with Star wars fallen order and battlefront 2.

**Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Very good build quality. This needs to maintain good quality for 5 years. I am responsible, but I will be taking this laptop with me for 4-6 hours, 3-5 times a week. 2 USB ports, HDMI and headphone jack.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Some laptops I have been looking at are:

Razer Stealth 13 - no HDMI, bad cooling

15-inch ASUS ROG Strix Scar 3 with RTX 2060 - Any advice on this laptop would be appreciated

A busy friend of mine gave me some advice and said I should look into the RTX 2060 or 2070. He said these would be the best for me I don't remember why.

This friend also suggested the ASUS laptop and he said there was a particular build I needed to get If I decided on that laptop. Unfortunately, I literally have the worst memory and I won't be able to talk to him again until after I have bought the laptop. Any help suggesting a laptop is appreciated
