How to keep my laptop healthy? Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:35 AM PST So someone has read the advice here and purchased a laptop to meet their needs. What can owner of a shiny new laptop do to maximize its lifespan? Is there a schedule of maintenance that a layperson can do, or pay someone else to do, to keep the hardware in good condition? Are there any must-have programs to keep the software running smoothly? The extent of my knowledge is c-cleaner and antivirus, and maybe taking some canned air to the vents. If anyone could share their experience/recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Razer Blade Stealth, Blade 15, or Prestige 14?? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:25 AM PST USA/Israel for work, between 13 and 15 inch screen with small footprint, and budget is ~$2.5k Moving from an X1 Carbon. I have a dedicated workstation which is getting up there in age (forget all the specs but it has a GTX660 for reference). I'd need to do up to 1gb file photo editing (PS), 4k video editing (premiere), and play some lighter games (maybe even some AAAs on low settings). Also I will be doing some data analysis work but it will almost certainly be covered by the other requirements. I need a portable daily driver as my X1 died. I do take my charger with me everywhere. I don't really mind the footprint of the Blade 15, but I've heard the battery life is abysmal and the charger is a brick. It's also important for me to future-proof whatever I buy for 4 years. My budget is probably around $2500. Another option is to upgrade my workstation later in the year or to get an eGPU. That being said, I've never used an eGPU before. If I do go that route, will the 4 core i7 suffice? Performance wise, the RBS would be perfect if it had upgradable components. even with the stock specs, the RAM is the fastest by a mile: will I notice this/is there any point to upgrading it within the next 4 years? Whatever I get, I also cant decide between 4k or FHD. I'd like 4k, but I don't really use touch and battery is important. Thoughts? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Buying my first ever laptop and I have no clue where to begin! Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:39 PM PST Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It needs to be light enough to carry around in a backpack all day as I'll be commuting with it. I'd like it to be fast enough to perform tasks very quickly and smoothly, whether it be editing photos or using the internet. The laptop is for university but I hope it can be used for much more then just work. Hoping my budget can cover something that is powerful enough to play the majority of games available! Something that isn't very important but would be a bonus is a good quality display as it would benefit my photo and video editing. Total budget and country of purchase: $1639 (USD) and New Zealand Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the price (as long as it doesn't result in a massive and heavy laptop. How important is weight and thinness to you? This is one of the most important variables I have been considering during my hunt for a laptop! I'll be using the laptop for university so although it doesn't have to be MacBook thin, I want it to be light enough so I won't have an issue carrying it around throughout the day. I also prefer the design to be on the thin side, but mainly I just don't want it to be thick and chunky like a lot of high end gaming laptops. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 100% Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer the laptop to be on the medium to small size as it would be easier to carry around throughout the day. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Although I am buying it because I need a laptop for university, I plan to spend extra on one that can play a wide range of games. The Halo Master Chief Collection and other first person shooters come to mind. I also plan on doing some photo editing (lightroom and photoshop) and video editing (Adobe Premiere pro CC) I'd like the laptop to be powerful enough to do this kind of creative work comfortably at high speeds. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'd like to play new releases at 40+ FPS with average graphics. I'll be extra happy if I can manage The Halo Master Chief Collection at 60+ FPS on at least high graphics. While it doesn't need to be playing everything on ultra graphics at high speeds, I want the laptop to be able to handle almost any game at at least average graphics. It would be nice to not have to worry if my laptop will be able to run a game or not every time a new release comes out. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. At the end of the day, my three priorities are this - Weight/size, performance speed and gaming. I don't want to own a laptop that is slow when performing tasks (anything from surfing on the web to downloading and editing photos). I want it to be quick enough so that I can multitask easily without the performance taking a hit. Performance is definitely a big priority. It needs to be light and on the thin side so that it isn't a burden to carry around all day. I don't like chunky designs either. Finally, I'd like it to be able to play most if not all games. I know it won't match the most powerful gaming rigs of today, but I'd like it to at least play The Halo Master Chief Collection on high graphics at a high FPS. I appreciate all comments and advice left, as I've been looking into a laptop for a while now but have no clue what I'm really doing. From graphics cards to RAM, I'm a complete beginner - I want to get the best value for my money as it's a big purchase, but I want to make sure I do it right. Thank you very much to you all! Aspiring developer needs a new laptop Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:40 AM PST Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? My current laptop is a little $200 Dell. The big issues with it are power, storage, physical durrability and a bizarre bios that I just can't get Linux to boot on. (I've put Linux on half a dozen other computers. This is a weird little bios). The small size of the Dell is actually a plus. I really don't think I need much more power. Enough that it doesn't get winded surfing the net and 8 gigs of RAM. A terabyte HDD would be about right. Nice to have's: a screen that's very easy on the eyes. High Fidelity and resolution are not important. Just don't want to get eye strain. As nice a typing experience as possible too. Maybe a second hard drive, or room for one? Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have a pretty rough job, and carry my laptop with me at work, so tough really is a plus. Also, I actually do not like touch screens, so if it didn't come with one, I'd call it a plus. Total budget and country of purchase: no idea. I haven't saved at all. Just want an idea. $400 us sounds reasonable, but I have a $1200 gaming rig, so I get it. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good battery life How important is weight and thinness to you? not very important, but overall size is. I'd really like it to fit comfortably in my backpack. Textbook size footprint? Thicker isn't a problem. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. if I can pay less for something with Linux already installed, that would be nice. Otherwise, windows? I haven't played with chrome too much. Is it as power user friendly/developer as Linux? Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Pycharm + Firefox sometimes chrome If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? nope [link] [comments] |

Aspiring developer need a new laptop Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:01 AM PST Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? So right now I work in a somewhat rough environment. I'd really like a pleasant typing experience. And often at work I don't have a reliable internet connection so storage is a priority. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. mostly I'm using the computer to study programming, so top of the line hardware is not a priority, but my little Dell with 4gb of RAM and a Celeron processor struggles with surfing the net and also has a bizarre bios that I haven't been able to get Linux running on is a problem. Total budget and country of purchase: well, really I have no money saved so I really don't know. 400 us seems reasonable, but I can see going a lot higher if I need. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Looking for a gaming/streaming and video editing laptop Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:57 AM PST Hi, I need budget laptop, for some casual streaming and playing games and entry lvl of video editing stuff. I have to be mobile for a while so standard PC doesnt satisfy my needs. I have looked at Asus tuf fx505dt ryzen 7 3750h, 1650 4gb nvidia and maybe Acer Nitro 5 i5 8xxx type of proc with 1650 nvidia, both of them have 8gb ram and ssd. Total budget and country of purchase: 1200$, Croatia Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. I won't be running it on battery power often. I'm not looking to use it as a tablet. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not Important Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. FreeDOS is the best option for me but I prefer Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Doesnt matter, it can be 15.6", gonna use a separate screen Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This will mostly be used for gaming, video/photo editing, and general use. Sony vegas, davinci resolve, premiere, photoshop, corel of those basic programs I use for editing If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Currently playing LOL, WOW, FFXIV, HOTS, Fortnite, MTGA. I would prefer if I could use it at least on 60fps. Playing at a toaster with 20 fps now so I would prefer min 60 fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability first, dont want something trashy that looks good like lenovo Ideapad L340-15. Read a lot of reviews on that one and I dont like it. Need a dual channel RAM, ssd prefered, I will use external hdd anyway. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm open to any brand and all suggestions. Since I live in Croatia, there is not much of availability to buy from. I usually looked between HP, Asus and Acer. Atm I use asus with pentium, 4gb and nvidia 620m (if my memory serves me right), so I am more of an Asus fan since my old laptop keeps running for 10+ years. Thank you very much in advance for your recommendations. [link] [comments] |

Zenbook Duo ux481fl or Zenbook 15 ux534ft? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:08 AM PST Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality and good performance that could last few years Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So I need to buy a new laptop to use for the university (coding in C, Java etc) and that can run most of the new games (I don't pretend to run them at max quality) and for content creation as I make art as my hobby (so Photoshop, illustrator and other art related software). And since I love the secondary screen solutions offered by the Zenbook products I decided that it had to be one of them, So in conclusion I can't decide between the Zenbook Duo 14 ux481fl and the Zenbook 15 ux534ft. At first I was going to buy the Zenbook 15 because it had the gtx 1650 but then I realized that the MX250 of the Zenbook Duo actually runs most of the games quite decently (and since I don't play that much and time is what it is and is never enough) I thought that the Zenbook duo was a good compromise between performance and style offered by the secondary screen). Total budget and country of purchase: Italy , around 1300€ but if necessary I can increase it a bit Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good battery life and best specifications for money How important is weight and thinness to you? Portability is indeed important. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" or 15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Illustrator and few newly released games (optional) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming is required but not necessarily Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? preferably Full sized keyboard with number pad Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So which one do you suggest? I'm open to other suggestions as well. [link] [comments] |
GTX 1050TI vs GTX 1650 for a budget laptop. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:02 AM PST I originally posted this on /r/GamingLaptops but realized this sub has a much larger audience and figured I'd try my luck here too. Hey there, so this morning my old laptop basically broke down due to an act of god and I'm now in a position where I have to get a new machine ASAP since, not only do I game on it (quite regularly) but it's also my main source of income for work. Anyway, I'm from the Philippines and in about three days, our largest online retailer is gonna have a pretty big sale and I managed to catch two laptops that had somewhat similar specs and were within my budget and I was kinda hoping to get a feel for which is better. 1. ACER Nitro 5 AN515 So this is the one that I see talked about quite a bit online and overall the general consensus is that it's a solid budget gaming laptop. Nothing amazing, but one that should hold you off for a few years if you're not the type to want to max out your graphics settings on games. The one I'm looking at specifically has a 4GB GTX 1050 Ti, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD+256GB SSD, i5-8300H. Converted to dollars it's about $760 on sale. 2. ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DT And my other choice, one that I haven't seen too much discussion on online. Overall the only standout thing this has compared to the Nitro is that it has the GTX 1650 which I've seen seems to be the laughing stock of desktop owners since it's just as expensive but significantly worse than the RX 570 (or so I've read) but for a laptop user, I think it comes out okay? The downside with this one is that it only has a 512GB SSD. Also comes with 8GB of RAM like the first one and an AMD Ryzen 5. Converted to dollars it's about $807. So, at least from what I can tell, the biggest difference is pretty much the GPU and I know that the 1650 is better than the 1050 Ti, but I wonder if it's a big enough difference to warrant less HDD space and the slightly higher price tag. Also as a side note, my old laptop had a 970M with 16 GB of RAM so, I guess just as a cursory question so I don't get my hopes up too high, will either of these two be better than that or just be about even? Lenovo Ideapad L340 - Good for casual gaming? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:01 AM PST Thinking of purchasing a Lenovo Ideapad L340. It comes with an Intel I7 processor, 16gb of Ram and a Nvidia GeForce MX230 (2gb). Is this good for casual gaming? I'd be mainly playing Classic WoW, Football Manager, maybe ESO. High settings/FPS aren't a big deal for me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:28 PM PST I haven't been active in the computer scene since I finally became satisfied with my build, so I'm kind of unaware about price changes in the past year. My question is, is this laptop a good deal for 450$? I'm pretty sure it is, just want to know before I buy it. This is for a Christmas present for a friend, uses will be work and art related. If you think I can find a better one for the money, tell me to hold off [link] [comments] |

Laptop for group study sessions Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:02 PM PST Hi guys. I am starting my grad studies in Spring 2020 (MS CyberSecurity) and need a new laptop for taking to the group study sessions. I use a notebook and a pen for taking notes, for some reason I always like my hand written notes better than anything else. I have an AW 17 R3 from 2015, when I started my undergrad program and now that I have bought a house near my University, I can have a powerful desktop to do the heavy lifting. I want a light and more portable laptop that I can take to group study sessions. The main use of the laptop would be to browse the internet, read/write papers, give presentations/demos and run some test code (nothing too heavy). The things I am looking for in the laptop are :
I've got $3500 (American) for my PC build. Although I've got another $1000 for the laptop, I dont want to overspend it by buying a machine I wouldnt use to its full potential. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Dec 2019 10:54 PM PST Hello I need some serious help. I am looking for an inexpensive laptop option for my 13 year old who would like to use the computer for a few computer games and then some YouTube video stuff. I am purchasing a separate microphone that he picked out but I can only spend about up to $350 for the laptop preferably at Walmart. Any suggestions? He's just starting out so it doesn't have to be amazing but I would like to go in the right direction. I understand that the gaming laptops are very much but this is the best I can do for now. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Edit to add: The country of purchase is the United States. Screen size is not a priority. I believe he wants to mainly use it for online war games and doing a few small YouTube videos. Other then that basic internet surfing. I already purchased a Dell laptop last year but it was not what he needed because it was a chrome book and did not have windows and so he said that he could not download the games he wanted. I fully understand that I am out of my league here and I am realizing that my price point is not sufficient. I'm just trying to get what I can and make him happy. All help is appreciated and needed since I am obviously not knowledgeable enough in this area. Thanks everyone!! [link] [comments] |
