How often should you check your ports? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:05 PM PST I only use the internet for reddit and youtube mainly and I have started learning a little bit about internet security and I've learnt a bit about ports. I've scanned mine using shilds up and their stealth and I've used yougetsignal.com and it says their closed. How often do I need to check them? Will they remain closed or is this something I need to check regularly? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Changing router MTU from 1500 to 1492 Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:42 PM PST I've been reading around the web trying to understand MTU but my mind is not grasping the obvious. So I'm asking for some ELI5 details. For some time I was seeing intermittent stalls with my fixed wireless ISP connection. There was no pattern. I might see no stalls one day and three stalls the next day. Recovery often took about 7 to 8 minutes. Running mtr only showed that something was awry with many lost/dropped packets. My conclusion was the problem was my router or the ISP CPE. I don't remember what I read a few weeks ago, but I was prompted to change the router MTU from Auto (1500) to 1492. Since then I've had no incident. The router is an Asus RT-AC66U with DD-WRT. (I'm not enthusiastic about DD-WRT but that is the way things are right now.) My understanding is the larger MTU size might lead to packet fragmentation, which to me seems like a reasonable cause for the stalls. While I am happy the problem seems to have disappeared, I am not declaring the issue resolved as there are other variables. For example, winter is here, the leaves are gone, the air is colder and denser, etc. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Torrent speed fast, But every other download is slow. Posted: 07 Dec 2019 04:16 AM PST Hello i have a weird problem with my internet speed. My Network: Netgear R7000 AC1900 2x Netgear GS108E smart switches, 2 VLAN's trunked to my living room 4 Computers UTP 6 Phones WIFI 2.4ghz/5ghz 1 TV WIFI 2.4ghz 2 IP TV's Cable 1 Printer 2.4 ghz ISP with 750 Mbit/s a second I replaced my ISP router with Netgear R7000 AC1900 router. Speedtest shows a internet speed between 800 and 850 Mbit/s If i download a game from steam, origin, uplay etc... my internet speed is capped at 21 M/B's.( 168 Mbit ) When i hit the internet speed of 21MB/s(168 Mbit) browsing the internet becomes useless. Pages take forever to load. Everybody will be lagging. If 2 persons are downloading from steam then my internet basically becomes 5 Mbit /s( 0.625 MB) I can confirm that my switch gets unreachable after starting my download. With torrent i am able to reach a speeds of 90-100 MB/s. If i place back the original ISP router/ without the vlans. i don't have these weird problems. Only with the Netgear r7000 router. When replacing the ISP router i added 2 Vlan's. One for IP TV(640) and one for INTERNET(300). I have VPN enabled to access my home network. I had first installed Advanced tomato om my router, But there the internet speeds are slow (Generally). So i reinstalled the original genie software. It doesn't matter if i am connected to the smart witch or directly plugged in to the router. Exactly the same problem. EDIT After a lot of testing. I have been quite busy today. When i place my netgear as a access point behind my router have full download speed on steam. When i place my netgear as a router, even behind my ISP router, steam download gets limited to 20mb/s.Even if i setup a DMZ zone. VLAN's have nothing to do with this. I have disconnected everything and disabled all vlan's. Netgear router is at fault, nothing else. FIXED IT finallyAfter downgrading my netgear nighthawk 1.0.9.32_10.2.34 it fixed my issue. My switches are no longer geting trown out of my network. and i have full internet speed when i start downloading from steam/origin etc.Fucking netgear with it's updates. I should have started there. How to segregate an IoT device from the rest of my network... Posted: 07 Dec 2019 02:23 PM PST Given recent advice by the FBI I wanted to prevent my Amazon devices from seeing any other devices on the network. I have a TP-Link TL-R600 VPN and a Linksys WRT 1900 ac. What would the best approach be? [link] [comments] |
Is the Archer C7 good for an apartment? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:17 PM PST Two people live in the apartment. A few smartphones and laptops are connected. AppleTV is also used. The apartment is rectangular shape and about 43 feet by 32 feet. Due to various constraints, the router would have to be placed in the corner. The C7's power output is 387mW, whereas the C9 is 981mW. Does this make a difference in terms of wall penetration? [link] [comments] |
Where to get short power cables for rack equipment Posted: 07 Dec 2019 10:44 AM PST Hi all – Where can I find short power cords for rack gear, like to go from a UPS/PDU to routers, switches, NASes, etc? I'm talking about cords that go from a NEMA 5-15P female to a regular male plug. A foot or three long. What do you call them, or what should I search on? ("Power cords" doesn't do it.) p.s. How about right-angle plugs? Is that a thing network pros use in these sizes, or is it always the straight ones? [link] [comments] |
Connect Wireless Mesh to Wired LAN Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:59 PM PST I bought a new D-Link Covr mesh wifi. It's connected, and i can surf the net. It does not allow me to acces my wired NAS. The NAS is wired into my ISP's router/modem. It seems the router has 1 network, and the mesh has a second network, and they are not communicating. How can i fix this? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
How do I use a modem/router combo as just a router? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:15 PM PST So I just got a Motorola mb8600, which is purely a modem. No wifi, no routing. I'd like to use my old Netgear c6250 as a router and wireless access point? Is that possible? If so, how? I can't get into the router via routerlogin.com, 192.168.1.1, or any other conventional means so I can't set it up. [link] [comments] |
Anyone with TP Link Archer AX 50 have high bufferbloat and ping? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 07:13 PM PST I setup my gaming pc and gaming systems as high prioritization and enabled QOS (no impact). a. 2.4ghz and 5.2ghz both have pings like 1ms, 2ms, then 80ms then 150-250ms to the router b. network cable connections have 1-50ms pings to the router as well c. this causes 30-400ms ping spikes to game servers d. Tested wireless AC and AX cards same issues. Latest firmware. I would not recommend buying this router, it has much worse of a connection so far than 2 prior AC routers. I wrote a complaint asking if they have a new firmware (201910 is the latest). Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2019 09:28 AM PST So i have fibre optic in my flat, but the router is on the opposite end of the apartment than computer and wifi is slow. So i've been thinking of routing an ethernet cable from router to pc but that would require the cable to be pulled next to fibre optic cable in the same hole. There is already a coaxial cable in the hole and i could pull it out if needed or use it as a way to pull ethernet cable. My question is: how likely is for fibre optic cable to get damaged in the process of pulling another cable in the same hole? [link] [comments] |
Sudden Terrible Performance on 5ghz band of wireless router Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:25 PM PST High everyone, I'm just in an apartment, so I've got a fair simple setup of my own modem, connecting to my wirelessly router combo, a Netgear AC1600 R6250, that I bought in 2016. I'm paying for 100mbps down via TWC, and have both the 5ghz and 2.4ghz channels set up on the wireless. Today, all devices on the 5ghz channel started experiencing disconnects or extreme slowness. Tested on a moto Z, surface pro 2, pixel 2, and a MacBook. All getting disconnects and/or single digits speeds. Meanwhile, my wired connection to my desktop got the full 100mbs. Switching to the 2.4 ghz channel did result in slightly better speeds. I did reboot the router, no changes. I'm guessing it's time for an upgrade, but I thought I'd check here for advice, as Google searches resulted in more vague answers than I was looking for. Thanks in advance for the help, and let me know if I need to clarify. Sorry for the comparatively simple question. [link] [comments] |
Moving from Bare Metal to Virtualised Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:01 PM PST Hi everyone, I am hoping to get some advice on my first foray into virtualisation. I am currently running PFSense on bare metal (Qotom Q555G6) setup using this guide and am interested in moving to virtualisation both to learn and save me buying additional hardware to run home assistant. Some details about my desired setup:
Here is a quick diagram I whipped up to better explain my desired setup. I am getting a bit lost with my research on whether to use Virtualbox, Proxmox, Docker etc. as well as trying to find a nice concise guide to help get this up and running. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations? A huge thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Gigabit sending; Fractional receiving Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:54 PM PST Hello all. I've got a MacBookPro with a gigabit adapter, going into a TP-Link "dumb" 8-port gigabit switch. Also connected to the switch is my home server, using on-board gigabit (Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411), and another MacBook. I set up iperf -s on the server, and used iperf -c 10.10.10.203 -fM -d -i 10 -t 60 on both macs to test network speeds. Transferring from mac-->server results in gigE speeds (100MB/s), however, receiving from server-->mac is about 10-20MB/s. The second mac laptop produces the same results. I inverted the test, making each MacBook the "iperf server" and the server the "client". Got the same results. I also tested this using ssh, and also with netcat. Same results. If I repeated this iperf test between the MacBooks (one MB as server, one as client), everything looks good. gigaBit speeds sending and receiving. This tells me there is something wrong with the server's setup. How is it that the server can "receive" gigabit from all sources on my network, but is incapable of "sending" gigabit? ethtool on the server reports full-duplex, 1000BaseT, etc (which makes sense since it is capable of receiving gigE). The server is just a home build, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 4.15.0-47-generic. Any thoughts? Many thanks. [link] [comments] |
Just got 300mbps internet, my pc is still getting 40 Posted: 07 Dec 2019 05:38 PM PST I'm still new to this stuff but I'm just seeking some advice. Just upgraded to 300mbps today and it works great on my phone. But my pc gets the same as before, about 40-50. So how could I get at least close to 300? I think the problem is that my pc doesn't support/accept 5g internet. Which my phone is connected too. As I have a 5g, and then a normal network from the same router My connections: Coax cable into network provider modem and then connected to router. (Probably isn't the problem. My pc is using a wifi card connected to the mother board which I believe doesn't support 5g. I'm pretty sure I have two options but I just want to know your advice: Get a new network card. Or Wire an Ethernet cord (what type..?) through the house. The card would obviously be easier but I don't know which one would really work. Does anyone have any suggestions on cords(cat5/6?) or wireless USB cards for computers? And/or what I should do [link] [comments] |
Do PDUs do anything that a UPS doesn't? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 05:21 PM PST Hi all – Does a PDU offer any functionality that a UPS doesn't? In other words, is a UPS always a superset of the functionality of a PDU? My understanding is that a PDU evenly distributes power to each outlet and maybe enables remote switching per device. Do UPSes do this as well? By the way, does remotely switching power off require moving parts? Like electrical actuators? I'm no electrical engineer, and I'm not sure if there are ways to cut off or turn on power that don't require moving parts. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:30 PM PST I have one gateway with two interfaces. One for WAN and one for LAN. Inside I have a bunch of devices. What I'm trying to figure out is how to make the 10.0.0.0/24 network two /25s. When I make the first block, all devices in it can get the gateway at 10.0.0.1 which then allows everything to get elsewhere. This makes sense. How do I make the second block 10.0.0.128/25 get to the gateway? Is this possible with only 1 interface on the LAN side? I don't think it is because of how the Boolean algebra happens with the network/host bits when subnetting. I know I could use VLANs to accomplish the segmenting virtually and effectively have two subnets, but trying to find out if there is a way this can be done with 1 LAN interface and raw subnetting. Any insights? [link] [comments] |
How do I view connected devices on a SonicWall? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 04:10 PM PST I have a SonicWall tz500 w going into a Netgear managed switch that feeds all my devices. After adding the SonicWall I've been unable to access my devices via webgui. I'm assuming that the SonicWall has leased new IPs to them. How do I see a list of connected IPs in the SonicWall admin gui? [link] [comments] |
[Help] TP-Link Archer C9 Unstable Ping and Low Connection Speed Posted: 07 Dec 2019 05:29 AM PST Okay. This shit has been driving me crazy this past week. I have tried everything I could yet the problem still persists. I have just bought a TP-Link Archer C9 because my old router is 9 years old. I bought it hoping I could get full speed from my subscribed 200DL/200UL internet plan. My current setup is a modem from my ISP connected by LAN cable to my Archer C9 acting as a router (and negotiator). I could get full 200/200 speed when connecting my laptop directly to the modem and when connecting my laptop directly to the router (Archer C9). The thing is, with Wi-Fi I get unstable ping and low (and inconsistent) speed. My laptop is connected to the 5 GHz band and I'm sitting right beside my router at all times when testing. I get around -25 dBm of 5 GHz signal this way. The same also happened when I connected to the 2.4 GHz band except I got even lower speed. I've tried with other devices (my Android smartphones) and they have unstable ping too, so the problem definitely does not lie with my laptop. I also believe the problem is not due to signal interference, since from looking at the signal chart here, there are not a lot of 5 GHz bands near my house. I have upgraded the firmware of the router to the latest one, downgraded it to the initial one, factory restarted it several times, changed several settings, none of those worked. I'm at my wit's end now. Please help. EDIT: This is the result of ping test to my router on 5 GHz connection. This is on 2.4 GHz connection. [link] [comments] |
Ubiquiti NanoHD slow on Gig Internet Posted: 07 Dec 2019 03:07 PM PST Hi everyone. I am having an issue with my current single access point setup at home and was hoping some of you may be able to help. The layout of this setup is:
My issue is, I am only receiving anywhere from 170Mbps(ish) x 300Mbps(ish) when connected to NanoHD when using laptop and Pixel 3XL. I know I won't get the 900x900 type speeds but I would think I should be able to get at the very least 500x500 when standing a foot away from the device. I have ran RF Scans and set to the best channel, tried auto, checked what ISP speeds were set at etc etc. I have read on forums over at Ubiquiti with some people having the same issues but no clear answer. Some people just said they restarted it numerous times and it finally took. Unfortunately, that hasn't worked for me. While I like the device and they are nice units, I'm wondering if I should sell it and go with a more traditional setup using a Netgear Orbi, Linksys Velop or similar setup since they do seem to be a little bit friendlier when setting up. Any thoughts on what could be limiting the speed on that device? Has anyone else come across something like this in the past? I currently only have the one AP to test and would like to get it figured out before I purchase another one or two since it is in a 3500 sq ft home. I am also using speedtest.net website and app for testing. I have updated both controller and AP to latest firmwares. Thanks for any help anyone can give. [link] [comments] |
What is the best way to route only some traffic over VPN using PFSENSE and Unifi? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 08:37 AM PST Hello everyone and thanks for the help in advance! TLDR; Easiest way to route Nvidia shield (and possibly other devices) over ExpressVPN while maintaining LAN access for local game streaming. The rest of the network should route over regular WAN. Router is PFSENSE. Also want to route a UAP-AC-IW pro guest network over VPN without LAN access. Full information: I'm a new PFSENSE user, and trying to get everything set up before January. In January, I'll be switching ISPs to one that has symmetrical 1 gbps. I decided to build a PFSENSE box from a T620 plus and a 4 port NIC. For an access point, I have a UAP-AC-IW pro. There's also an unmanaged switch that provides POE+. The Unifi controller is on a raspberry pi connected to the switch. I have PFSENSE and the AP up and running now, but I'd like to do some more advanced configurations. Currently, eth1 (LAN) connects to the switch, the switch powers the AP, and everything is working. Eth0 is WAN. Eth2 and Eth3 are inactive. I'd like to route some traffic over a dedicated VPN (ExpressVPN). I don't want all the traffic through there, just some devices. What's the easiest way to accomplish this without slowing down the rest of my network due to CPU usage? (I know VPN will be slower). Because I have two spare Ethernet ports, can I just set up one port to route all traffic through the VPN? If so, can I still safely connect to other areas on my LAN using that device without leaking my IP? I have a shield TV that I want to connect via VPN, but still need LAN access for local game streaming. However, if I set it up this way, I could expand it with a switch later. Any tutorials or suggestions are appreciated! For an added bonus, I'd like to set up a wireless guest network without LAN access to route solely over VPN. This isn't an absolute necessity if it is going to kill my main network WiFi speed though. [link] [comments] |
Is a Fast5260 router outdated? Posted: 07 Dec 2019 02:21 PM PST So I've had a Sagemcom 5260 router for about 2 years. And as of recently been experiencing slower WiFi speeds. Definitely been an increase in devices using the WiFi but more less passively. Am I due for a newer router? Like a Netgear ac 1750 maybe? or am I just due for a internet speed increase? Creating a Virtual Network using a Cisco 2960 and Cisco 1841 Posted: 07 Dec 2019 10:29 AM PST So I have made a VLAN on the cisco 2960 but obviously it only supports layer 2 switching but I want my pc on the VLAN to connect to the internet so I used the 1841 to configure as the router and static routing but in all of my attempts it fails to connect to any website I have set up NAT and DNS and an internal network and outside but it cant ping 8.8.8.8 or even load a web page this is the video I followed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwPBjluqwgI&t=0s and if this helps my router has no WAN port just 4 LAN ports the brand and other information is here: Platform Lunar Product name DRG7820 Product date June 26, 2016 Bootloader revision bootloader-lunar-2.2.0-R Firmware revision geneos-lunar-3.8.0-R ---- pls educate me or help me out also I'm 14 so don't be to mean if I am being stupid o something lol :)) [link] [comments] |
1.50 mbps download speeds with att Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:53 PM PST Hello everyone. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to networking but I'm trying to become better and so I would like to know if you could help me with some advice. Currently, I am using att and according to them, my maximum download speed is 100 mbps. However, according to some polka speed tests I've done, I'm only getting about 1.50 mbps download. I am using the ISP provided router (I know that's bad, but money's kinda tight) and I am not using a wired connection as I dont have a computer or anything to connect an ethernet cable to. Would anyone be able to provide any advice for how I can get better speeds. [link] [comments] |
AT&T Fiber Services - Modem Recommendation Needed Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:47 PM PST Hello. I'm sure there are other threads similar to my question but would like to start my own for trackability. My AT&T 300 Mbps fiber services are starting up in a few weeks and I would like to source my own modem and router. I'll be reusing my Google Wifi router but what are some modems you would recommend for AT&T services? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Max speed of 550 Mbps with deco M9 plus Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:25 PM PST I have 1Gbps internet speed and I can't get over 550 Mbps passing through the deco. I did all the test with the technical support and I read on their forum that they have a channel problem. I will probably return my deco and buy a new mesh system. Some one here have a mesh system that work well with 1Gbps internet ? [link] [comments] |
