Best switch for home us that supports Link Aggregation?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 02:18 PM PST

I'm currently looking to rebuild my home network, since it hasn't been revamped in years. The modem we have has 2 LAN ports on the back of it. I'm looking for a network switch that supports Link Aggregation so I can run cables from both ports on the modem into the switch, so we can increase throughput. I'm currently looking for a switch that has at least 16 ports, supports LAG, and doesn't break the bank. Anyone have recommendations on where I should be looking?

Is there anything special that I need to do in order to print, scan, and have NAS over network on a network that will have Windows, Mac, and Linux (Ubuntu) machines?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 07:19 PM PST

For example, say I buy something similar to a HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdn that can scan and print over Ethernet. Would I need to set up anything specific or would I just be able to find the printer and scanner over network on all the machines? Would the NAS hard drives have to be formatted in a way where all the machines can use that file system? I also plan on having wifi access points if that makes any difference.

Cat6 network cable is "unplugged" unless forced at 10 mbps

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 03:21 AM PST

    Hi,

First question here, so hope following all rules.

I am doing home improvements, which meant replacing a long cable from router to room in the house. by long i mean +- 20 meters.

I had cat5e which worked nicely, but got the offer to replace it with cat6 and i said OK.

Now that the job is done, I can't seem to connect anything through that cable. Switch doesn't detect the cable, computer doesn't detect it if on auto negotiation or 100mbps or 1000mbps. But if I force the network card driver to force 10mbps mode, it detects the cable and works, but only at 10mbps.

Any idea what is going on? and how can I prove that the problem isn't my computer or switch, but the installation/cable so I can ask for replacement before paying for the job. (feel free to ask for more details if needed) Thanks!

All the sudden: "Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network" on almost every Google search, requiring check box

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:41 PM PST

For some reason, all day today I am getting this, where I need to click a check box to proceed with a Google search: "Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. This page checks to see if it's really you sending the requests, and not a robot."

This is happening about every other time I use Google, for hours, and I haven't changed a single setting and I am not doing anything differently. I did look at VPNs today, but I am not logged into a VPN or anything - this is so weird! Mostly it asks me to check a box, but sometimes it does a CAPTCHA where it wants me to find all the bridges or buses in the pictures.

I logged onto my Xfinity IP address portal and removed devices I didn't recognize and changed my wifi password, but it's still happening. Why would this suddenly start happening? It's extremely annoying.

Create two way vpn tunnel or proxy between countries

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:00 PM PST

Both people have internet access, both have access to multiple routers etc.

I live in the UK and need to access services that only work in my home country Czech Republic and need to access my friends network

He lives in the Czech Republic and needs to access UK services such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, etc. and my server (contains movies), i.e. he needs to simulate being connected to my network, again we both have internet and need to somehow have either a proxy on both sides or have a VPN tunnel somehow, we need this to be independent and not run from other services such as pre existing VPN's etc.

Since i am quite new to this, could i please be given either youtube tutorials that will help and cover everything, detailed instructions and links to software or some kind of online tutorial

    Thanks

    Martin

How to forward HTTP/80 request to HTTPS/443 request if ISP blocks port 80?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 04:22 PM PST

I have a node.js webserver and I use Google Domains for my domain. I have the HTTPS certificate and everything set up, but I must use "https://example.com" instead of just being able to type in "example.com", or else it will not resolve since port 80 is blocked. I cannot redirect server side since it never actually reaches the server, so it needs to be done either in Google Domains, or some type of DNS provider like CloudFlare at least in my understanding. Is there any service i can use that sits before my server in order to redirect traffic from port 80/http to port 443/https?

How to set up more than one Moca adapter??

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 04:19 PM PST

Environment: Home, No digital TV signal. Just internet coming in from Spectrum to house junction box outside. I of course would replace splitter outside and use a POE filter and use F caps where needed.

I am thinking of setting up Moca in several rooms. I just do not know how Moca assigns IP addresses when the main Moca adapter will be at the Cable Modem/Router level using one ethernet port.

If I were to add a MoCA adapter to my router and to the coax I realize I would use another bonded MoCA adapter somewhere else in the house. I guess it does not need to be bonded perhaps....
Question: Now what if I wanted to add 3 other MoCA adapters in other rooms to attach just one ethernet device? How would the router know how to divvy up the IP addresses?

Thank you very much for helping this newbie. Peter

I have no idea what i'm reading, let alone doing. Please help a NOOB!

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:51 PM PST

I am admit tingly ignorant and for the past few weeks have been trying to educate myself on networks. However, i don't know the jargon so not only do I not know what it means but it's basically in another language.

I want a set it and forget it set up and I don't mind paying good money for it. From what i've gathered, something like this should cover my needs, thoughts? The problem is- I don't know what they do or even how to set them up. Can someone explain this to me like i'm a 5 year old? I have a this as my modem (NETGEAR - Nighthawk 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem - Black). Would i connect the "Edge router" to the modem? Then what? And the access point white dish thing broadcasts the internet throughout my apartment. I have a 2 floor loft, tons of open space.

Thanks so much for anyone's help. You can make fun of me/laugh at my expense.

Easy to setup AP for otherside of house?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:48 PM PST

At the parents for christmas week and was wondering if there was an easy/quick to setup AP I could drag to the otherside of their house? The router/modem is on one end of the house and no where near the guest rooms so I'd really like to find a simple solution.

What brand of budget routers to prefer?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 05:30 AM PST

I've seen info that TP-Link good in hardware, but tend to have more security vulnerabilities. Not sure about asian software in general.

Heard that Mikrotik may be too complicated even for experienced people.

Whose routers to prefer: TP-Link, Mercusys, Mikrotik, Upvel (American)...?

Creating a separate network for wireless network access

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 05:49 PM PST

I'm trying to setup a guest network for my in-laws. They have a Verizon Fios G1100 AC1750 quantum router, but I do not want to use the built-in wireless because it requires full wireless network to be enabled in order to use the guest network. I wanted to setup something more secure.

The G1100 doesn't allow me to create a separate VLAN or assign a physical port to DMZ. What is the best way to setup a secure wireless network that doesn't have access to LAN only internet access? Thanks.

Basic home Networking - Subnets communication

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:34 AM PST

Hello guys, i have a very basic setup that for some reason i can't manage to make it work.I have my isp's modem managing the subnet 192.168.0.0/24, where only connected devices are my desktop pc (0.3) and a router that i use as an AP in the living room (0.2).The AP instead, manage another subnet, the 192.168.1.0/24 where another DHCP server is running, along with my dns server, nas and all the wifi networking.

The reason why i do not use the router as a switch is because the isp's modem sucks, literally everything is locked and i can't change anything, that's why i need two subnets.
Now, i can't add any static route to the isp's modem (so it has no idea about the .1.0/24 subnet) but obviously the AP knows both. From any device connected in the 1.0/24 subnet i can reach anyone, including the main modem but from my desktop i can't reach anything inside the .1.0/24 subnet, i added a static route on my desktop stating that you can reach

    192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 via 192.168.0.2

However it is not working, i can see packets leaving my desktop with aiming to the right device (right mac address) but i get no reply.Am i clearly missing something, can you help me? Thanks!

    Noob Question about ethernet cables

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 04:57 PM PST

I have phone lines that are actually cat5e cables. I want to be able to connect a router/modem from upstairs to downstairs. The cables downstairs are not connected to anything but themselves. They wrapped the blue and striped blue together on three cables.

My question. If I follow T568B on the rj45s and follow the color code B for the jacks, will all the devices communicate ok?

Connection would be something like upstairs router connected to wall jack with a patch cable. Downstairs end of cable might just be a rj45 connected to router. And then patch cables to anything else.

    Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks!

Better to run VPN on NAS or router

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 09:37 AM PST

Currently running my VPN on my Synology NAS because old router didn't support it (Apple AirPort Extreme) but I just switched to netgear Orbi RBK50. Not sure if it supports it but I'm going to find out (or if somebody knows please tell me). Wondering which it was better to run it on?

Home Network Setup - VLANs or Just Separate Subnets?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:18 AM PST

So I'm considering redoing my home network... mostly for fun but also to provide some separation of devices.

I'm currently running a MikroTik hapAC2 but will eventually be swapping that for a MikroTik 450GX4, MikroTik switch, and a couple Ubiquiti APs.

I have a few computers, three gaming consoles, several iPhones and iPads, two smart TVs, and a number of iot devices and Echos. I decided on putting all of the iot devices, echos, TVs and consoles on a separate vlan/subnet from the PCs, phones, and tablets. I still want to access the iot devices from my PC network but Otherwise I want them isolated.

I know VLANs are overkill but is there any harm in putting them in a home network, performance wise? Should I just use separate subnets and firewall/policy routing instead?

Can low bandwidth be caused by background noise?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 02:44 PM PST

Hey everyone, I'm having an argument with my ISP over my internet speed, I'm paying for 4Mbps up/down and I'm receiving less than 0.1Mbps, it takes me like 14 seconds to search something on Google.

I connect to my ISP through an ubiquiti M5, their support came to see what was going on and said the issue was on my end due to the fact I was using an obsolete radio. They recommend to switch to a lite beam ac gen 2.

The thing is that I ping 8.8.8.8 and everything is fine, average latency is 70ms and 0 packet loss (I'm in south America).

Now, my question is, can bandwidth also be affected by signal noise between my ISP and my m5 radio even though my latency is decent and have 0 packet loss? Thanks.

Shielded keystone jack for UTP cat6a?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 03:24 AM PST

i just got done with 10 runs of cat6a in my house. i have temporarily terminated the ends of that wire and am using them to ensure the runs are good. everything is performing well. i now want to get keystone jacks to properly terminate the cables in each room but am having trouble finding cat6a unshielded keystone jacks for UTP cabling. can i just use shielded keystones? they seem to be more available with better reviews.

    Hairpin NAT using Cloudflare

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 01:39 PM PST

I have a domain (home.mydomain.com), pointing to a web server hosted locally.

I'm using Cloudflare to proxy my connection using e2e HTTPS. This works great, I've even firewalled it such that this box is only accessible via Cloudflare (when coming into my network via the internet).

However, as I'm using Cloudflare, my router (UniFi USG) thinks my server is only accessible via the internet (looking at tracert). I'd like to keep traffic inside my network where possible, eg hitting home.mydomain.com inside my network should resolve to a local IP.

I've tried to do this via just editing the hosts file on my router and this works, but it also means my SSL certs are no longer valid.

Any ideas on what I could explore to achieve this?

Newbie question re: changing apartment services from hard line modem input to wifi, configuring dual band router as a bridge?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 12:08 PM PST

Hello folks, new guy here. I've got a puzzle for you if you don't mind helping out. Tried looking up in this sub the tl;dr issue of setting up a bridge connection on my router with both username and password credentials on ssid, but nothing stood out. Anyway, story time continues below.

I've got a new internet service that was imposed on us in our apartment. Same service provider, but now we're getting our internet provided and subsidized into our rent. We're going from a modem configuration to a wall mounted wifi device. In testing it out, we're going from 180 down/16 up to 120 down/160 up, which is pretty much acceptable.

I have an archer c7 dual band modem, factory firmware, along with a couple switches past that in the topology which connect several devices that require a hard wire connection.

I've looked at the settings in the router and see I can configure each band separately, which has me wondering if I can set one band as a bridge to connect to our new home wifi connection and the other band to resume our home wireless network, or failing that, just set it up as a bridge for our wired devices.

The main stumbling block is this. The WDS bridge settings ask for the ssid and password, but I also have a username that needs to be passed as credentials, and I don't see any way to connect my router using this method because of that. Would DD WRT bridge settings have username parameters?

Not sure if there's any other options with the tools I have, open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I am desperate in need for a good, stable, trusty network connection.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 12:08 PM PST

It's almost 2020 and i can't get any way to have a stable network connection. I've tried wifi extenders and powerline, I can't lay a network cable from upstairs to downstairs. Powerline was the most successful thing i had but on a day it suddenly decided to not work anymore. I believe it also killed 2 sockets of the house. Cant relay on the electricity network anymore.

The wifi extender i have is a TP-Link TL-WA854RE, my pc has a wifi card (pci express) : TP-Link TL-WDN4800. The wifi extender keeps disconnecting from the router while its like only 10 meters away from it, which causes very high ping spikes between my pc and the router + disconnects.

The router is downstairs, almost at the back of the house. My room is upstairs, at the front of the house. Between is a master bedroom, bathroom and living room. aka they're not really close to eachother.

Is there any solution that isn't a wifi adapter, powerline, cable?

New Fiber Installation - Enclosure / Mounting of ONT?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 08:22 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I think I'll be upgrading from DSL to fiber soon and I'm looking into the installation, particularly what I might want to have in place before the tech comes and sets things up.

The main new hardware looks to be the ONT, which is typically mounted on a wall. However, I have seen people put them in a box inside their wall.

I believe the ONT will be mounted on a wall at the back of my house, so not in the garage or something. Therefore, I'd like to mount it inside a wall or something so it can be covered up, but still accessed if necessary.

When I search for "ONT enclosure" I don't find much, mainly ones from Snake Tray. However, when I Google around more I also see people with fiber post their ONT setups that look like this.

Can anyone point me in the direction of what I should be searching for to enclose my ONT? I feel my search is too limited.

    Thanks!
