How to fix most windows problems before posting them here

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:07 AM PST

    1. Run cmd as administrator

    2. Type the following commands:

    sfc /scannow

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Or if you are too lazy, just run this batch file as administrator

If this doesn't work, you should post the problem on r/techsupport first, because it is designed for tech support so you are more likely to get a solution

    Windows 10 academic license

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:59 PM PST

Hi all, I've installed my academic copy of win10 x64 back in 2017 on my custom built PC but now I've built another one and want to reuse the license. Will I have any problems in terms of activation? Does the licence key get married to hardware it's being activated on? If so, how do I deactivate on my old PC and activate on new? TIA.

    Help with monitor calibration

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:49 PM PST

I upgraded my GPU to a GTX 1080TI and my colors are suddenly all fucked.. I think. Basically all my colors changed and I've been messing with my calibration and all for a while and can't tell if I've gotten it right. I have an Acer XG270HU. I will attach a picture but taking pictures of monitors is a bit iffy especially if you're trying to get an accurate idea of monitor image

Mute button not working (turning volume all the way down works fine)

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 07:23 PM PST

Anyone come across this before? The mute button on my keyboard does not turn off the sound, even though it shows the 'X' in the volume control in the upper left. Turning the volume all the way down does the correct thing and turns off the sound completely, also showing the 'X' - so not a terrible problem, just a weird inconvenience.

Sound Drivers are screwed up, and I don't know how to fix them.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 06:23 PM PST

Sound Drivers are screwed up, and I don't know how to fix them.

I have an ASUS laptop running Windows 10, and for a long time, the sound was completely fine, then recently, it completely broke, and at random intervals will completely bug out, play a loud monotonous tone, or cut out altogether, before returning to normal, I have checked for updates on my sound drivers, and even rolled back to an older version, but before I re-install the drivers, I want to know where I can find them again, so I can actually install them. I looked up the name of my drivers and nothing comes up, for what I think is my sound driver anyways.

So I guess I have a few questions.

    1. Which one of these is my actual sound drivers, and are all the rest even necessary?

    https://preview.redd.it/c8gpg9zx2i541.png?width=439&format=png&auto=webp&s=b3172d19351d88c2c36f8d050eaf3af203e6f99d

    1. Once I know which one is my actual sound driver, where would I go to re-install it?

    2. What can I do to prevent myself from having to deal with this again?

CPU usage shoots to 100% after upgrading RAM. Please help.

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 11:28 AM PST

I have a really old PC configured as:

    Mobo: Intel Corporation DH55TC (XU1)
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
    CPU: Intel Core i3 540 @ 3.07GHz

Previously I had just a 2gb DDR3 RAM, which I got rid off.
Recently I got two 2gb and two 4gb DDR3 RAMs, all from the same brand(Hynix) and of the same frequency(1333Mhz).
When I add all of the four sticks, CPU usage shoots to 100% and it's nearly impossible to use the system.
But if I use the two 4gb sticks alone, the system turns out to be faster than before. The same happens when I use up to 8gb of RAM. Anything above 8gb(one 2gb and two 4gb also) turns CPU usage to 100%.
    Please Help :(

I am running Windows 10 64 Bit Pro. Updated a few minutes ago.

    Things I have already tried:

    • Reboot
    • clearing temp folder not sure why this was recommended somewhere but I did it
    • scoured my folders to find any remnant avast folders didn't find any
    • run with administrative privilege
    • uninstalled and reinstalled LAN, WAN drivers from mobo manufacturers website
    • re downloaded the setup in case the original was somehow corrupted
    • I have done the chkdsk and scan

This is my first time with this error. I have never seen this error before.

    Why I reset my windows?

I was having trouble updating my nVidia graphics drivers for the past two driver releases so I decided to use DDU to start fresh but the issue still persisted and as a last resort I reset my PC fixing the graphics driver issue but now I am facing this one.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

    Update:

    Tried reinstalling C++ redistibutable,

Tried DISM it was successfully completed but the error still shows up. SFC scan couldn't fix the corruption either.

The error now shows up on start up.

Win7 on OLD HDD + Win10 on NEW SSD

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:24 PM PST

I've recently bought a SSD and I'd like to install Win10 on it while still having my old files and everything I have on my old HDD with Win7 installed on it.

I've got no problems with the OS installed on the old HDD if it doesn't interfere with anything in Win10 after installed. What I'm curious about is:

I just need to install Win10 on the new SSD and change the boot to it and keep the old HDD as it is or do I need to do anything specific for this exactly setup to work? I won't be booting Win7 anymore but the amount of files inside that HDD would be impossible to move at the moment.

    Thanks for reading!

Migration from Windows 7 to 10

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:28 PM PST

We are migrating the rest of our Windows 7 machines up to Windows 10 and I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on data migration solutions.

I made a system image of the Win.7 machine and put it on an external drive. From there, I booted the new Win.10 machine into recovery mode and tried to restore with that image. No luck, which I expected not to work...

So...best solutions? Is what I attempted even possible? Any trusted third party solutions? I'm trying to do this without going through the initial Windows 10 setup if at all possible.

Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

Edit: the data is PII, so backing up to the cloud isn't an option

    Windows 10 Build 18947 - New Start Menu, Emoji Picker - https://youtu.be/WIUK8cBLJ6M

Microsoft reveals new Windows logo design and 100 modern app icons - https://youtu.be/ahkyniDl2xc

Looking at those videos, the icons looks BEAUTIFUL, while some of them actually looks better than Mac's. Also the start menu has gone back to a normal one again without those ugly tiles. Generally Microsoft has gone in a very good direction with Windows 10X.

I have been a Windows user from 2000-2013, and changed to Mac because that ugly 8, 8.1 and 10, but changed back to Windows in 2017... Looking at those two videos, Windows has found the light, finally after a 8 years of disaster

Why is Microsoft still giving Win10 ISO file for free?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:33 PM PST

    Found this site https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10ISO

And I was wondering why is Microsoft doing this. Does this not require a Product Key?

Is Windows Store / UWP officially a failure yet?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 12:16 PM PST

I never use it and nothing I use I need it. I do need to go get Steam and Origin and All the stores installed sometimes though. It is a shame though we have multiple stores we music install.

What is UWP use for now besides a windows desktop app ? I don't see anyone using that either.

Is it safe to buy a Windows License Keys from retailers?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 01:39 AM PST

I'm planning on using Windows 10 and I don't want to pay so much money for an activation key.

I seen a lot of retailers and websites selling keys, and I'm wondering if it's basically the same thing or it comes with disadvantages like privacy or something else. What are your thoughts?

    Unresponsive desktop on startup

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:46 AM PST

Hello I faced this weird glitch or don't know what it was but today I installed the KB KB4530684 update, Windows 10 1909 build 18363.535, everything went fine the update installed, windows 10 booted up, welcome screen came and my desktop came as usual after that. After using my PC for a few minutes I restarted my PC, windows 10 booted up, welcome screen came too but after that when the desktop came the icons were missing, the taskbar was unresponsive(if I hover the mouse cursor over it the blue circle keep spinning), the entire interface remained unresponsive for a solid 10-15 minutes like a blank desktop with the wallpaper on it and an unresponsive taskbar. After that everything started becoming normal slowly. Then I restarted my PC again when the taskbar became responsive and after that it didn't happen again so far. I checked event viewer for some error logs and saw some services didn't start/respond on startup which I think was the reason for the unresponsive desktop. But anyway till now I haven't faced it anymore everything working normally. I checked sfc/scannow and windows didn't find any corrupted files. Can someone shed some light on what it was and why it happened ? To me it looks like some sort of OS related issue not hardware. I am really confused as it came out of nowehere.
