Gift Buying Guide :Best Laptops to Buy For Christmas

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 01:04 AM PST

Merry Christmas guys (little early?), I know a lot of you already bought your christmas gifts but for those of you who didn't yet and looking for some help here is what I think are the best laptop options to get.

Usually I build my lists from Amazon because it is much easier to filter the choices but I will try to add NewEgg and Walmart to this list to be as comprehensive as possible, also at the end I will add some cheaper gifts if the laptops were too high for your budget.

For those that find a laptop you want a gift and worried that it might not ship fast enough then you should sign up for Prime free month trial offered by Amazon to get same day/next day shipping.

For those outside of US then and want to ship a laptop to your country then check out MyUS company which is shipping company that will receive your shipment from Amazon in US and then ship it to your country. this MyUS promo offer 1 month free trial so you can check how much it will cost you to get the laptop.

The form will be like this Price range, Laptop name and link (the laptop name is the link), and then what the laptop is good for, then specs and maybe what is good about it.

    Here we go:

One of Those SSDs would be a great choice to speed things up.

Buying Ram for your laptop is a little more complicated, depending if you have 1 stick of ram already, or 2 sticks, and if you do what DDRM they are, so if that is something you are considering just comment/chat and I will check it for you. (same goes if you want a laptop and nothing on this list suits you).

Here is also some specific lists that can work as gifts.

List of laptops with USB C charging.

List of Laptop Backpack for Back Pain

    List of Best Laptop Stands

For now this is the list, but I am still working on it, let me guys know if you have another way to break them down or other options I should add.

    Suggest a laptop for me

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 03:06 AM PST

You guys seem way more knowledgeable on computers than me. I need a laptop that will last a decent amount of time, one I can play Sims 4 on (I don't play any other games although I might in the future), I'd like to stream movies and study on it too. My budget is $900 but love a good bargain. Thanks!!!

Did I make the right decision?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 02:57 AM PST

I just bought a refurbished Dell G7 with an i7 8750h, a GTX 1060 Max Q a 256GB SSD and a 500GB hard drive for 630$ with tax. It has the AUO screen which can be overclocked to at least 90Hz (Higher if I get lucky)

I use laptops mostly to game, but I'm thinking of getting into programming (ML, Data analysis and Game Designing). Initially my budget was 550$ and I can't go but think I spent more than I should have. Should I return it or keep it?

    Hey Guys!

Which light laptop do you Guys advice within a price of maximum 1100 euro's? I really like the looks of the MacBook air,pro and the surface laptops... also I won't use the laptop for a lot more than just searching the net and making stuff for school on it...

So yeah personally I am leaning towards buying a new surface laptop 2 for 800 euros but after reading others opinion on the laptop, I am really not sure anymore...

Asus TUF FX505DT-AH51 VS Lenovo Ideapad L340 (81LK00HDUS) - Which is Better As A Budget Gaming Laptop? ($600-700)

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:57 AM PST

Both of these laptops' prices are in the $600-700 Range. After doing a research on both of these laptops, I found out that the best one is Asus TUF FX505DT-AH51. It has a 120Hz Display, International Warranty and 2 RAM Slots.

As for Lenovo Ideapad L340, it has only one RAM slot (which is pretty rare for gaming laptops these days) and you need a certified technician to upgrade the RAM or/and the HDD unless you want the warranty voided. Well the warranty is valid only in US & Canada so far.

The only advantage of the Lenovo Ideapad L340 (81LK00HDUS) is that due to its design, it doesn't strike out as a gaming laptop.

I have made a post on my website. It contains tables with both of these laptops with as much information (and videos) I have found. NOTE: The links that redirect to Amazon are affiliate links.

Should I get the mid-2017 or the late-2018 macbook air model?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:41 AM PST

So I want to get a macbook for music production and music software as well as for school. I don't want to buy a macbook pro because I'm broke. So I was comparing the two and it seems that the benchmarks for the 2018 model are better, but not by a huge amount. So it seems to me that the main difference is in the screen at a higher resolution and two usb-c ports instead of actually useful ports. I don't really want to go through the hassle of getting all of the adaptors for the usb-c. So would it be worth it for me to get the 2018 model? It's more expensive but it doesn't really seem that much better to me. Besides maybe the look and the asesthetic of the device maybe. Is there anything else I need to consider? Is it just generally better to buy the latest computer models to make it more future proof? Which one should I buy?

Budget gaming laptop in Central Europe

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:43 PM PST

    Total budget and country of purchase: 650 - 800$ (about 700eu), Poland/Lithuania

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Just the best option for the cheapest price, good battery is not that important

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not too small

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly for gaming, stuff like NBA 2k20, FIFA/PES, Football Manager and maybe some simulation, shooting games

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nba, PES, fifa, need for speed, COD, LOL, assasins creed. For medium/high quality

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not for professional gaming, most important is that games would run nicely. Thanks!

Laptop with the highest resolution and hertz possible right now?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2019 12:09 AM PST

What's the laptop with the highest possible resolution and hertz right now? My dream is to have a laptop that's 4k and 240 hertz, but that technology sadly isn't possible yet.

Anyone know which laptop has the absolute best specs for these two features?

Edit: I'm looking for both specs to be the highest they can be. Ik 240 hertz laptops exist and 4k laptops exist. I'm talking about together.

$500-$1500 Laptop for Drawing & School [US]

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:55 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

Preferably under $1000, up to $1500, US.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2-in-1 preferred, battery lasting at least 4 hours.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Light weight is very important (under 5 lb, but lighter the better)

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Preferably 15.6"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touchpad, stylus either included or compatible (please recommend one if you know of any good ones). 360 is nice but not required.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The laptop I've been using for school died yesterday, and I need a new one for my last semester in college. After May, I will primarily use this laptop to draw. I was looking at the Samsung Notebook 9 Pen, but I'm sure there has to be something cheaper that would serve the same function. Thank you kindly for any suggestions.

New laptop for light gaming and some data science

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:40 PM PST

Hello, I recently had my HP Spectre stolen from my car so now I'm looking for a replacement.

I am currently a senior in university in the US with a budget of around $1,300. I plan to use the computer for some gaming (typically League of Legends and Minecraft). I'm also studying statistics so I would like the laptop to be able to handle data analysis software and programming, mostly R, Python, Stata, and SPSS. Other than that I plan to use the laptop for basic computer stuff like Microsoft Office, emails, web browsing etc. 2 in 1 is not necessary and honestly probably more annoying to me than helpful. I'd like a 13" screen and for it to be as light as possible. I'd prefer Windows just because it's what I'm familiar with, but I'm open to Macs.

My HP Spectre had serious issues with overheating, so I'd like to avoid that if possible. The Intel i7 seemed sufficient and the size/weight were also good. I am currently considering a Dell XPS13.

$2000-$2400 MacBook for audio recording and mixing (US)

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:32 PM PST

I'm looking for something that can handle up to 20-25 tracks on Logic for recording and mixing. A larger screen is certainly a plus for workflow.

Apparently the recent MacBook keyboard is the Ragnarok of laptops which is why I'm skeptical about buying certified refurbished. However, the loud fans in the recently released 16" makes me doubtful about live recording in the same room. And to top off my indecision, is it worth it to wait for Intel's 10th gen processor for MacBooks coming out next year?

    Plz help.

$200-$400 Laptop for Commuting and Job Hunting after Work

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:36 PM PST

**Total budget and country of purchase:** Would prefer to keep it between $200 and $400, US. Will be almost entirely used for job applications once I get done at work

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money. Don't care about battery life as I'll only be using it for an hour or two a day.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?** Would prefer a lighter more portable laptop as I will be using it for my commute

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No gaming on this bad boy. I got a tower at home for that.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard: Don't care, I bring my own Keyboard to work so I'll just use that. Build quality: It'd be nice to have something solid, I'm really looking for something that can take a beating during my commute and not poop out on me after a few months. (It'll be shoved in a gym bag, which gets shoved in a locker after an hour train ride and a 30 minute walk through Chicago). Touch-screen: If it comes with one, great, but if I can get better specs without, I'll take it without the touch screen. Finger-print reader: Same thing with the touch-screen.. Neither are a high priority. Optical Drive: Nah, the smaller the laptop the better. Input Devices: as I mentioned earlier, I will be using the mech keyboard I bring to work, but I MAY also opt to use a mouse. Given that, I'd like at 1 USB C port, and 3-4 USB 2/3 ports.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Would prefer to go Ryzen, because honestly I want to try them out, preferably Zen 2. I'd like to build a Ryzen PC in the future, and this would be a solid test run for me. As much RAM as possible, preferably 16GB. I will have upwards of 6 Chrome tabs open at once, with 2-3 word documents, and some music. Storage: SSD please, solid speed would be nice, 250 GB would be more than enough for me, I'll only really be storing word files and the OS on this laptop. Headphone jack needed for sure. IPS, 1080p for sure. Let me know if I need to adjust my expectations, I can spend more if need be, or I can lower some expectations.

    Database coding for college

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:11 PM PST

I have a primary desktop computer that I do everything on, but my college is requiring bringing laptops to class and downloading specific database coding software.

My intended use: bring the laptop to class (~2-3 hours, 5 days a week) and then transfer my assignments to my desktop so I can complete them. I might also watch movies in bed occasionally.

    Specs I am looking for:

    • Under $1000 budget
    • Slim and lightweight for portability/fits into my backpack is probably my biggest concern
    • HDMI port (full size) and 4 USB ports
    • Side number keypad
    • SSD
    • Be able to comfortably split screen between 2 excel sheets
    • 8gb ram minimum
    • Quiet keyboard
    • They recommend i7... but is that really necessary?

    Which laptop for the money?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:05 PM PST

Okay, so I've been looking at these two laptops which I'll put two links up for. I want to know which one I should buy because I don't know much about computers or laptops. I've done a little research but I figured reddit PC users would already have this knowledge. Basically, I just want to know if there's a big difference performance wise.

    Laptop 1 (Acer Aspire 5 Slim) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_ybT9DbPCGCNX9¿

    Laptop 2 (ASUS TUF Gaming FX505) https://store.asus.com/us/item/201912AM100000001/ASUS+TUF+Gaming+Laptop,+15.6"+Full+HD,+AMD+Ryzen+5+3550H,+RX560X,+8GB+DDR4,+256GB+PCIe+SSD,+Gigabit+WiFi+-+FX505DY-WH51?gclid=Cj0KCQiA89zvBRDoARIsAOIePbBNbRCBGANIwVqv_gm2q4nfBcj-OUF-MxqusAjTEhqIzCksb4WNL6gaAjMDEALw_wcB

I'm open to other suggestions for laptops as well
