    Best laptop for coders?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 10:12 PM PST

Hey y'all. I'm a computer science major with an interest in security but know very little about hardware. I currently own a MacBook Air which struggles with memory and has become very slow after about 5 years. I'm looking for a laptop that I can run Linux on and can support a lot of applications. I'm not quite sure what other criteria I have besides this, so feel free to ask questions. I appreciate the help!

Side note: I've used a Lenovo before and liked it but wanted to get your input for my specifications. I also don't want to get ripped off by paying for stuff I don't need.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** US. Budget: $1,000

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life is important to me.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I would appreciate something not too heavy as I know I will be traveling with it to school and work.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I have only ever owned a Mac, but I would like the laptop to be able to run Linux smoothly.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Nothing too large. I've grown accustomed to my 13.3 inch display

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Nope. Maybe some gaming, but that is not a main concern.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A

Best laptop for graphic design/photo editing?

I need the portability of a laptop so a desktop is not an option. What would be the best laptop you can buy right now if money isn't really an issue?

Looking for affordable all in one laptop

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 08:08 PM PST

Budget: $1500 Australian dollar (am willing to go higher for the right laptop but try to keep to the budget)

What I need the laptop for: I mostly use my laptop for the below games and apps. I do a lot of browsing, watching videos etc as well. Mostly mediocre gaming and personal use.

-not needed for heavy gaming or video editing etc.

OS: Windows preferred however mac is good too if it fits the description of what I want and within budget.

Size: 13' to 15' (15' or close is preferred)

    Must have:

    • Backlit keyboard
    • 2 USB ports at least
    • No bad hinges
    • Good at multitasking laptop- be able to have multiple things open at once without lag.
    • Something that can handle a animated wallpaper as well as my games and apps.
    • i5 minimum, i7 intel core preferred
    • Good amount of storage as I have a lot of random files etc as I will be doing work on my laptop as well. So, at least 250gb (absolute minimum)
    • Good amount of ram, 8gb or higher.
    • Must be able to run he below games and apps with ease (in table)
    Games Apps
    Sims 4 (with cc) Spotify
Minecraft/Technic Launcher (with mod packs) Discord
    Eden Eternal Skype
    Roblox Popcorn Time
    Tomb Raider

    Want but not necessary

    • Nice aesthetic
    • Touchscreen, flexibility, 2 in 1 type of laptop if they can do the above.
    • Durable
    • slim laptop (not that important but I do like the sleek designs)
    • Resolution, higher resolution is nice but I would prefer the ladder then ultra hd.

    Not necessary

    • Battery life, I almost always plug my laptop in with my charger so battery life isn't that important.
    • Camera, don't really use it, high or low resolution camera doesn't matter
    • Weight, wont really be carrying it that much so it doesn't matter if light or heavy.

help me find a Unicorn Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 07:47 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, ~$2500 maximum // virtually unlimited budget

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want something that I can run AAA-esque games on. I want something with enough battery life (4 hours ish) unplugged to take to class to do notes/email/youtube/chrome

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? ~5 pound max. Something I can take to a college lecture room.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No bigger than 15'. 144hz is required.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly gaming / photoshop

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Most demanding game is about Madden 20. Something that can run AAA tier games well. I prefer higher fps with lower graphics in games like that.

I think my best bet is a Razer Blade 15. I've heard some meh things about their customer service and build quality however.

If the next up and coming laptops like Summer 2020 seem good, I don't mind waiting if there seems to be a big upgrades on the horizon.

Travel, Demanding IT work, gaming. ~2000EUR

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:07 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000-2400 EURO. Germany, Baltics, EU. I travel a lot.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Reliability/Longevity/Sturdiness, Performance, Compactness, Design. Those are my top requirements. 120Hz screen would be nice.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important. Its a long term investment, I travel A LOT, and I have enough money I think.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux, maybe windows. I do dual-boot now.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I mainly do high-load programming (running docker, resource-hungry IDE, many tabs). Also play 1 game - cs:go which is why I would absolutely love atleast a 120Hz refresh rate and a dedicated GPU. Although if it comes to that I guess I could give it up. A dedicated GPU might be nice for other things in the longterm tho. Do you think a dedicated GPU laptop can be light, sturdy and last at least 3 years?

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CS:GO >120Hz, >120fps

I currently own Alienware 15 r2, the i5 version, but its too heavy, and I hate the gamer look. Also the i5 and 8Gb RAM (I know... upgradeable) are starting to slow me down. Its also a bit worn down so I want to upgrade.

I was looking at Razer Blade 15 and it looks like the perfect "beaty and the beast" 2 in 1, damn its pretty, but I often travel and I absolutely need my maptop for work, so having to deal with RMA, when Im in Caucasus or something would suuuuck. Is razer really that bad as reddit says :D?

I am looking at Lenovo for their reliability, and TBH Legion Y740 doesnt seem to be a bad option? Although the keyboard is not great I heard? And the power brick is huuuge.

    EDIT:

Im also looking at Thinkpads and XPS, but none of them seem to have a high-refresh rate screen, which I would love to have.

    Any other suggestions?

Looking for a cheap laptop that can handle some games

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 10:07 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably maximum 500$, Im in Canada, Quebec.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Its whatever really, I dont even know what good specifications are.. lmao.

How important is weight and thinness to you? not important at all

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows (7,8,10)

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I have a bad vision so small screens causes me to get a headache after a while of using it but generally ok with it. No preferances

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do play and I guess Editing also counts in there as Im a digital artist and plan on doing animation, but no big programs. My old potato was able to handle them very well when I couldnt even launch discord. Animation app Im still trying to look for a good cheap one, but art program I use is PaintToolSai. (Tablet is a Huion H610)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Im a big league of legends player, but Im not into high graphics, My old potato could play at 15fps but it was very laggy, so I guess 30-40fps would be totally fine for me. I would also play Sims 3/4, MC, but there's nothing much really.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope

Asus ROG GA502DU-BR7N6 or the Asus TUF FX505DV-PB74 for gaming?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 08:51 PM PST

I am going to buy my son a gaming laptop, and have basically landed on two: Asus ROG GA502DU-BR7N6 or the Asus TUF FX505DV-PB74

They are within the same ballpark price-wise, but the TUF seems to have better GPU and a 144hz screen vs 120hz.

    Specs:

    ASUS TUF (2019) Gaming Laptop, 15.6" Full HD IPS-Type, AMD Ryzen 7 R7-3750H, GeForce RTX 2060, 16GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe SSD, Gigabit Wi-Fi 5, Windows 10 Home, FX505DV-PB74

    ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G 15.6" Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q - 512GB SSD - Metalic Hairline Black Model:GA502DU-BR7N6

Besides the cache of the "ROG" nameplate and a sleeker design, is there anything about it that warrants a downgrade to the GPU and monitor?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $900-1200 United States of America

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm used to Windows but my supervisor and other friends in my program have suggested Macs. So...both.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing smaller than 13."

Laptop site where you can pay monthly for it?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 07:36 PM PST

Honestly, the title is more important here. I'm just filling out the form because the subreddit told me to...

Anyone know of a good site like that?

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Not sure on budget yet. U.S.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specifications and good battery life.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Not too important.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I mean, I'm hoping to be able to run some of the most powerful games at the best settings possible. I want to know that my computer won't crash when I try to play a new game.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Probably Destiny 2 primarily, but some of the Battlefield games as well. Other games I play don't need as many resources to run. As I said above, the best settings possible.

Suggest me a laptop for CAD/General Use

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 06:49 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: United States. Preffered $1,000 but can spend up to $1,500.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The more portable the better, battery life is secondary.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Important but not a deal breaker.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 preferred but not a big deal.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD such as solidworks, inksscape, etc.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Optical Drive required. Must be able to at least read DVD and burn CD.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Friend asked me to help find a high end laptop for CAD and other uses that also has an optical drive. I recommended him to get a high end laptop and a slim profile external optical drive which he's considering, but he is really determined to find one with an optical drive built in. I've scoured the internet for a while now and have had no luck. Any help is appreciated.

Looking for a good all around laptop with a high res screen (Surface Book/Laptop, MB Air/Pro)

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 02:35 PM PST

I've been rocking an HP Envy 14" that's at least 7+ years old now. Been good beyond needing a couple hard drive replacements over time but it seems to finally be showing its age so i'm looking at a replacement for an all around laptop with good build quality. Primary use is web browsing, spreadsheets. Most intensive use would probably be a torrent program and moving large files between an external hard drive.

    Preference:
    - higher res screens: Really like the >1080p screens the Macs and Surface line have
    - trackpads: trackpads with good gesture navigation (I see XPS 13 recommended a lot but I wasn't impressed with the small trackpad)
    - plug in to a dock/external components for a desktop set up (I have an old 32" 1200p monitor, would like to upgrade to a curved 1440p or 4k display. Possible higher refresh rate?)

So currently i've been considering the options from Microsoft (Surface Laptop 3, Book 2) and Apple (MacBook Air or 13" Pro). If you think I should considering anything else i'm overlooking that would be very helpful (I know these companies don't offer the best value for specs)

    Questions:
Surface Laptop vs Book. Is it worth the additional price for the entry level Book 2 since it doesn't include a discrete GPU? I believe the main differences would be a slightly higher resolution screen, higher battery life, more ports and the form factor (which i'll admit is very cool). Downsides are Book has older processor (8th gen vs 10th) and thicker/bigger size

Intrigued with the touchscreen ability of Windows. Obviously handy for 2 in 1 designs, but is it beneficial on a traditional form factor like the SL3?

Air vs MBP: Would an Air have sufficient performance for my usage? I'd like any laptop to last a while. The Air's lower price vs MBP would let me go for higher spec'd Air if required.

How important is Thunderbolt 3 for my use case?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, up to $1300

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. battery life > form factor > specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? 8/10.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not really. Possible some minor photo editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nice to have but not important. Main interest would be strategy games (Age of Empires/Real time strategy)

Need a new laptop for cheap

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 03:38 PM PST

Both of my friends have laptops that they bring to school and play Minecraft and CS (the original) on all the time. I would like to join them, but I am flat broke. I would like as much power as I can get for around $120. I can be flexible with the price, but not too flexible. Used/refurbished is fine, I will most likely be running Linux on it so OS is not an issue either.

I am in the US, if that makes a difference.

Trying to decide between 2 Laptops i9/2070 or i7/2080

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 03:32 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I had an Aorus X7 DTv7 but it recently died. Waiting on the insurance money to come through but in the meantime I was looking at NotebookReview and online and seem to have settled on one of two Laptops. I'm looking to spend less than $2,000 one is a Refurb from MSI the other is new from Eluktroniks. Both will be repasted with Liquid Metal for Temperature reasons.

The first I was looking at is the Eluktronics N970TF - i9-9900(desktop), Repaste, 2070 (non Max-Q) and I'd add my own Ram and HDD/M.2 Drives -> $1,574.95 ~2hrs Battery prior to UV.

The Second is an MSI GE75 Raider 9SG - i7-9750H(laptop), Repaste, 2080 (non Max-Q) (comes with 2x8GB Ram, and 1TB SSD though I'd swap my own m.2 Drives in and assuming the SSD is a 2.5" leave it there as storage and swap to my existing 2x16GB ram) -> ~$1750 ~4hrs Battery prior to UV.

I do a lot of remote work (mostly Remote Management, Telnet, SSH, RDP, VMWare, etc) but when not doing remote work Usually I play games with friends whenever I fly back home or wherever. Usually Action/FPS/RPG games. (Jedi Fallen Order, Detroit: Become Human, Phoenix Point, Outer Worlds, SW:TOR, will be playing Cyberpunk 2077 and GTFO when they come out.)

Anyways let me know what you think!

Looking for some suggestions about which gamer laptop to buy.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 03:23 PM PST

Hey. I know there's a formula for this, but I couldn't copy it and my criteria aren't too specific.

I'm looking for a pc able to run FM20, CSGO and LOL on highest settings without any problems. I don't think this requires much, and I'm willing to pay more for a better pc if it is worth it.

It will be used primarily for studying and such, therefore a simple, light and smooth design with a medium sized screen is preferable.

I'm thinking a SSD with at least 250GB, a 144Hz screen and at least 8GB RAM. Furthermore a good battery life is a big plus.

€1000 is around the highest amount I'm willing to pay, but there's a January sale coming up.

I don't know much about computers, so don't take these criteria too serious if you think more is needed or I could do with less.

Do you have any suggestions for laptops with good value for the money that would fit my needs?

    Thanks in advance!

Laptop for a Graphic Design Student

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:34 AM PST

    Hello guys,

I'm studying graphic design and I'm searching for a new laptop that I can comfortably use for both uni and occassional games. I currently have an HP ProBook x360 440 g1 (i5, 8GB RAM, Intel 620, 2 in 1) which I think was a misbuy (I'm using the touchscreen way less than I thought and there are obviously performance problems when dealing with multiple programs at once). So I'm searching for an upgrade to that, nothing special – the only thing that I'd prefer is the laptop not having too much of that gaming laptop look to it. Thanks for helping out, you guys are doing awesome work in this sub!

Total budget and country of purchase: Germany, up to 900€ is fine.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?: Best specs

How important is weight and thinness to you? I carry it around a lot for uni, but it's okay if it's heavier – as long as it is not 10 kilos

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but I would happily install it myself if it comes cheaper without

Do you have a preferred screen size? Nope

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects – sometimes 2 or 3 simultaneuosly. Of course standard stuff like browsers etc. Games: CIV6, Total War, EU4... for anything FPS-like I'm using my desktop. I can only speak for my current limited laptop though

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nope, my desktop can acceptably run any game currently

Best I've found in my research is that deal here: https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/hp+pavilion+15+ec0140ng+620838?nbb=8f14e4 with 15% off -> 849€

Edit: Maybe I'm overshooting with the price and specs, I just don't have any comparison. Tell me what you guys think. I bought the former laptop for 720€ as a campus version a year ago, it is at 800-850 in stores right now. Idk why the fuck i thought it was a good idea lol
