Ad Blockers. Thought someone might need them.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:40 PM PST

Here are some of the ad-blockers for your phone. All of them are from Fdroid, hence, open source. I have learnt of these apps myself from this sub. Thought I'd share some of them if anyone needs them.

    • Blokada- My favourite. Blocks all the ads. For non-rooted phone.
    • AdAway- Best if your phone is rooted.
    • DNS66- Alternative. Works well.
    • AdGuard Content Blocker - Never used it but I guess it does its job.

You are free to add to this if I missed out on something. Or you can correct me if I am wrong somewhere. Open to learning.

I think I may finally have found a replacement for ES File Explorer *Pro* for my needs

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:59 AM PST

    TL,DR: Try X-Plore instead

Backstory: ES File Explorer had numerous issues and the publisher was removed from the Play Store. This also caused the removal of ES File Explorer Pro (Note the emphasis. It is my understanding and experience that the Pro tier never experienced the free tier's issues, and neither Play Protect nor Sophos have ever flagged it on my devices. However, it's not a good idea to keep using an app that won't get security patches or get updated for Android R's new file access permissions.)

ES File Explorer Pro has a few features my workflow is dependent on, and which I could not find in any other file manager (Yes, I tried the crowd favorite FX Explorer, Solid Explorer, and MiXplorer) until now :

    • Displays image thumbnails in their full aspect ratio instead of cropping to a circle or a square
    • Can display image pixel dimension properties (not just the size and type of the file)
    • Has Recycle Bin functionality to help recover from accidental deletions

X-Plore appears to have all of the above. My only issues, which are currently minor, are:

    • AMOLED black theme (the dark theme does have AMOLED black elements, but is not all-AMOLED black)
    • The tree + window + right sidebar UI takes some getting used to

Most of the features I need are available for free, but I donated to thank the dev nonetheless. If you've been looking to move on from ES File Explorer Pro or have needs similar to mine, check it out!

No Longer Using the Official YouTube App. (Annoying Ads & Adblock Browser)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:11 PM PST

I felt like I really wanted to express this: YouTube lately has been full of ads, to the point that it's actually unusable and completely annoying. So I decided it was time to stop using the official app.

What I eventually did was, creating a home screen icon of Opera Browser (which has a free adblock in it) with a direct link to YouTube.

I wanted to ask if anyone else felt that way or did something similar. Enough was enough of that stuff.

Goodbye official YouTube, hello ad free YouTube.

UPDATE: After some really useful comments here, I found out about the app "YouTube Vanced". I have to say, that's the best thing I could have asked for. It's completely free from ads and it works just like the official YT app, plus it has AMOLED black theme and Background play. I really feel that it's an app that everyone should now about. Thanks everyone for the helpful comments!

[DEV] All Clear Weather (US-only *) gets significant update at v2.2 - Now with much-requested daily widgets, and expanded resizable hourly widgets! Also many reliability upgrades to always show you the most useful weather information as clearly as possible. International release coming...soonish!

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 11:22 AM PST

This is All Clear Weather, my R&D-focused weather app. The primary purpose of the app is clear communication of weather data, meaning a focus on large graphics, readable text forecasts and simple numeric displays.

    The app also has:

    - Current conditions of course! And a fun way to fix the current conditions in the app when it is wrong, enabling others near you to have more accurate current conditions and automatically help the system improve the future forecasts! This is the first of many R&D experiments in the app.

    - Radar maps with various image options, plus radar animations

    - Text forecasts for you from your local NWS office

    - Notifications for morning, afternoon or evening weather forecasts; severe alert notifications; and a persistent notification for current conditions.

The main new feature in today's update is the long-awaited daily forecast widget! Users have been asking for this for a long time so I hope it's a good start! I have ideas to improve (like an transparency option etc) but am also open to hearing feedback about what you'd like to see in the next releases.

The app is also running multiple interesting weather forecasting experiments using Android phones!

The main experiment is to use the barometer in most phones as a weather network node, making a new kind of distributed weather network possible. This is an active area of scientific research (papers linked below [1]) and I have worked on projects in the past that have made good progress on this. My take with All Clear is to use your barometer data in a privacy-sensitive way, quickly anonymizing the location data by only keeping 'gridded' statistical data rather than individual sensor data. That is, a medium-sized area (say like 2x2 mi) will be considered as a Virtual Weather Station if (and only if) there are sufficient phones inside reporting their atmospheric pressure data. Then the data can be summarized with accurate trends (pressure rising by x mb per hour for this region) and the location data you sent can be discarded.

New versions of Android (since Oreo) block sensor access in the background to protect your privacy. This is a good thing. But it broke a lot of old apps that did environmental sensor data processing, so I wrote this open source library on github to openly show how the app does the sensor data collection. And since All Clear is US-only for now (see below) this open source code (MIT license) may make it easier for devs in other countries start similar weather forecasting experiments without waiting on me or writing all the same code all over again.

I made a neat animation of some of this pressure data as Hurricane Dorian got close to the Florida coast this summer

The second experiment is using tagged/labelled photos of the sky (sent in by users, thank you!) as a training dataset for a machine learning classifier. My vision is to train a model to recognize weather features in photos; I believe it should be possible for a classifier to see any outdoor photo and then label the weather taking place in the photo. I think such a technology could be useful in a variety of ways! So the app is starting off by letting you send in photos with tags, and in some near-future updates I'll be improving this feature and writing the ML classifier.

[1] Some researchers I have worked with in the past, but not on this particular project, have published some papers finding the barometer data from phones can be useful in improving model accuracy! here's a link to their work: Impacts of Assimilating Smartphone Pressure Observations on Forecast Skill during Two Case Studies in the Pacific Northwest, and also, Smartphone Pressure Collection and Bias Correction Using Machine Learning.

A fun weather nerd detail about the app: The US NOAA Forecast API (that the app uses) only returns its text-based forecasts with °F and miles built-in as units. I wrote an algorithm (regexes mostly) to convert the text forecast units on-the-fly so you can be reading it and see it as C and km if you like, it's seamless. Well there is one error I know about, sometimes it will say "quarter of an inch of rain" which is a bit of a pain to parse, but I'm working on that too!

*US-only for now, international release soon! I tried to make this international from the get-go last summer (2018), and wasted months using IBM's API from WeatherUnderground that barely worked at all (Constant 500s and 403s and bizarre data errors - like, the forecast data would return but some fields would be empty. But refresh 5 seconds later and you'd get a different set of data with different empty fields. Bizarre.) Then they yanked the payment form off the web the very week I was going to publish the app and buy their $400/month package. No longer an option at all. Gone. 404. Now you have to wait for a phone call, might be weeks, and the prices are like $3,000 for the equivalent data (or something, hard to say!). If you want to read some of the drama about this, check out this WeatherUnderground thread where people are describing the confusion as WU cuts off their keys and makes the service dramatically more expensive. I will launch internationally when I find and integrate a new international data source that is reasonably priced. There are some options out there, but each of them has pros/cons when it comes to integrating into this app, so I have to take some time and figure it out. But it will get done and the app will be international - I promise.

Anyway that's enough of this intro! What do you all think of the app and the update, and what would you like to see in the next update? My early contenders for next major feature updates/additions are:

    - Radar improvements (it's a bit clunky in the app still, no? Could be improved!)

    - Weather photos improvements (inside-photo tags? Hearts/likes per photo? user-suggested tags? pre-approval image to see your photo after you submit and before it's approved?)

    - Current Conditions widget (app has just hourly and daily forecast widgets presently, no current conditions)

    - More notification options, like incoming rain/snow alerts

Thanks so much for your time and feedback! I hope you like the app! There is probably some more info on allclearweather.com if you want to check it out. Cheers!

App to Disable notifications with Keywords?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST

LinkedIn keeps sending me these generic "See what you've missed" notifications whenI haven't checked it for a few days. I don't want to disable LinkedIn notifications as a whole because when I get a private message it's handy! Its not just LinkedIn either, Reddit now sends notifications to tell me my comment has x number of upvotes...

I don't want to disable notifications for these applications but I'd like to be able to drill down a bit deeper and sometimes the apps themselves don't let you. I was wondering if there is such thing as an app which reads your notications and, if there's a chosen keyword/phrase, swiped them away for you. Would that require the phone to be rooted?

    Thanks!

    "Simple Social" push notifications

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 07:00 AM PST

I'm trying simple social for the first time.

It looks promising for what I need (low battery usage, block notifications on a word base) but I don't get ANY notifications.

I'm using miui 11 and I'm sure I gave all permissions the app needs, with a 5 min interval for push.

How did you all do to make notifications work ?

The best live wallpaper app you have used? Whether it be pair or free?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 10:38 AM PST

As the title suggests, I'm curious to know about live wallpapers and the state they're in now. I remember several years ago when I had the Galaxy S2, I would use in-built live wallpapers every now and then. But after that, I never really bothered with them and they consume more battery life. I want to try them out again but I'm looking for some good suggestions

I tried muzei but don't really like the concept much. I'm just looking for something minimalistic in the background. I wouldn't mind trying out any app even if it's paid, as long as it's worth it of course

    Personal health lab tracking app?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 06:23 AM PST

I'm looking for an app to simply track lab values and perhaps analyze trends, too.

I have found PHR apps, and apps that track simple measurements like glucose, blood pressure, pulse, etc. - I'm looking for blood lab test value tracking.

    Any help would be appreciated!

News app that will automatically download today's news coverage for offline reading

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 09:02 AM PST

So, I take the subway to work everyday, I'm on it for an hour and there is no cell signal down there.
What I would like is an app that automatically will download today's news at 8AM (before I leave my house), and 5PM (before I leave my office for the day), so then I can read the news offline if I choose to.

I think flipbook might be able to do this? But I would love if google news could do this, however I don't see anything in the setting.
Anyways, if you guys know of any app that has this feature, please let me know.
    Thank you.

app for tracking business mileage that's actually free

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 08:43 AM PST

everlance only gives 30 free recorded trips a month. MileIQ only allows 40 free recorded trips a month.

I'm a step away from trying to set something up with IFTTT to a spreadsheet off of my gps.

I absolutely need to be able to edit adding trips to my log. I don't anticipate always having my gps turned on.

bonus points if there's a free mileage app that will also help me with keeping track of repeipts

side point, I'd love a way that I could trigger my gps to turn on and off everytime it connects to the bluetooth in my car.

Anyone Know Why the Colors of the Text Bubbles Changed?

Using Messages for texting and I noticed today that one of the messages I sent to my brother has a slightly different blue than all of my other messages.

Does anyone know what this is due to? Is it an RCS thing (I enabled it a couple of weeks ago)?

    Looking for an image app...

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:29 AM PST

Hi, Is there an app that will specifically let me resize and or crop images to smartphone screen sizes? For instance, a Galaxy S7 wallpaper image to an S10+ (1440x3040 pixels), and the choice to either maintain aspect ratio/image quality or not? I love the way the Zedge app automatically adjusts wallpapers to the screen size of whatever phone you happen to be using. Thank you for your help, and Happy Holidays to all of you!

[DEV] We developed an app about privacy in public places

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:24 AM PST

Maybe a use case scenario could be useful to understand why we developed this app. These days, we receive a lot of notifications which contain sensible data like "my uncle is in hospital", "I'm sorry but we decline your job's applications" and so on. We don't want that someone could take advantage on this information only because he looked at our phone. Public Privacy is developed for this kind of situation. We want to hide every notification that could bring sensible data that must not be disclosed.

You can check it out it here:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.ppndrd.publicprivacy

    APP'S FEATURES

    • Filter all sensitive and private messages received.

    • Keep track of all notifications filtered.

    • Choose the filter intensity.

    • Choose which apps you want to filter.

    • Choose which classes of words you want to filter.

    • Add your own words to filter.

All suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you!
