    Simple Questions - November 25, 2019

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    So Happy.

After getting out of the military, losing everything, being homeless for years... to a friend giving me an old laptop he didn't use and trying to play CSGO @ 30fps... finally getting a pre-built Dell from a local shop with my tax refund... to having my own place, nearly done with my first semester of college... and the cherry on top - my new PC I built myself (it had been years!). I'm very proud of this.

I still need to upgrade the video card which I got on deep discount to fit my Dell's PSU.

I went through tons of posts, reading people's opinions and ideas on builds since it had been a long time since I had dealt with PC parts. Just wanna say the knowledge and helpfulness on this sub is pretty impressive.

Edit: Thank you for all the replies and the gold! I did not expect this much response at all.

What is the point of an expansion bay for a computer?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:34 PM PST

I'm looking over PC builds and I see that having an "expansion bay" is an option for a case. Can anyone explain what exactly an expansion bay is for? Would it really be necessary for a computer used mostly just for gaming?

    Thanks!

I just built my first PC recently, booted fine and installed Windows, played a game, then something weird happened.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 03:10 PM PST

So I just recently built a PC for the first time. I got windows installed, installed all my drivers and whatnot. I decided the first game to play on my new system was modded Minecraft (one* of the main reasons I wanted to build my own system). Everything was going smoothly, downloaded and was having fun with some modded Minecraft. That was until I tried out one particular new modpack called RL Craft. Up until this point I was getting a solid stable 60fps on all the modpacks I tried thus far (About 3 different ones).

    But this one was different.

The first minute or so of playing, I was getting crazy fps somewhere in the 300-600's. But everything seemed normal until about 10 minutes later when my normally silent computer becomes a roaring jet engine. My fans started going nuts, and it sounded like they were getting faster and faster. So I freaked out and quit the game hoping that would solve it but that didn't work. Ultimately I powered down my system and turned it back on.

    That somehow fixed it.

But I'm still wondering what was going on there. Is there something I could do in the future to prevent something like that from happening again? I'm also very very new when it comes to being in the PC builders community so I'm not yet experienced with technical knowledge.

Edit: Also I didn't know if this could be a troubleshooting issue or a discussion investigation, but I figured it was the former.

Also here are my build specs:

    r/buildapc I need your help!

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 07:22 AM PST

Hello everyone, so I just started a club at my university for PC building and all the topics surrounding building PCs. I created this club because I was inspired by the awesome communities here on Reddit and because I love building computers. The only problem is I feel like I will run out of topics to discuss in club meetings. This is why I am asking for help, please leave ideas for lectures, topics or discussions for my club below if you would be so kind. I will be giving presentations weekly on topics that you suggest! Our club is already 28 members strong and growing, so please help us out with educating and inspiring a new group of PC builders! Leave your suggestions below! Thanks!

If I get a 2TB SSD, should I still get a second, smaller SSD, just for a windows install?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:32 AM PST

Will the games on the 2TB SSD slow down Windows and boot times like with hard drives or is that not an issue anymore with SSD's?

Edit: Thank you everyone, I appreciate all the help

Writing code and waiting for Cyberpunk 2077

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:48 PM PST

Looking to buy/build first pc since switching to laptops at the start of the millennium. I wanted something I can develop c#, java, reactjs, applications on; but I also am going to start pc gaming with Cyberpunk 2077.

I have configured a few systems on digital storm and cyberpowerpc since I was looking at water cooling pushing build up over $4,000 at times, but after some feedback from a coworker I have put this list together of a possible build to put together myself.

    R7 2700 vs R5 3600

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 03:40 PM PST

So, was looking to upgrade my R5 1600 so I can recycle it in a build I'm doing for my brother. Kind of a win-win. But here's the deal... I mainly browse/game with light video editing very sparingly. I usually have a second monitor up for things like Netflix/Hulu/pornhub. You know, the usual. Yeehaw! I know the 3600 out performs the 2700 especially in gaming but a lot a multitasking things as well. However it's not by a whole lot from what I can tell. With he current deal on Amazon the 2700 is $30 dollars cheaper and you get a free game. With this situation would you all agree I'd be better off going with the 2700 or no? Gonna wait til Black Friday to see if a better deal comes along for either the 3600 or X version. But I'm leaning towards the 2700 for the price and game.

I seriously need help with a gaming monitor

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:03 AM PST

I have looked around so much that I'm back to square one for some reason. My requirements are: 1080p, 144 - 240hz, adaptive sync (see point below about input lag), TN panel.

I want to buy a gaming monitor for online multiplayer games. My PC can push 200-240 frames in most games so I was looking at the 240 Hz monitor but some folks suggested that I'll be wasting money if my PC can't push 240 at all times.

So then I started looking for 180 Hz monitor but they are on the same price range as 240Hz so what's the point. This brought me to 144Hz and I see the following options:

    1. VG248Qe. This seems to be least expensive but people say there are much better 144hz out there. I wonder what are those
    2. BenQ XL2411P. This is a bit more expensive.

Then comes the discussion of having adaptive sync. Some articles say that it induces input lag but others argue that those articles were written 4-5 years ago and currently the gsync technology induces minimum lag.

I'm seriously depressed because of the information overload. I just wanna buy one gaming monitor that gives me lowest input lag and doesn't produce tearing... Anyone help please!
My build: Ryzen 5 2600, gtx 1660 ti.

    New build keeps restarting.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 03:14 PM PST

    Hi.

I built a new PC 2 days ago and it keeps restarting when I turn it on. Shows no signal on the monitor and then doesnt show anything on the monitor. The PC keeps restarting and I havent even set up windows as it wont let me.

    What Ive tried:

Using different cables for CPU and GPU power. Reinstalling the cooler and reapplying thermal paste. Reseating CPU and RAM. Reseating GPU. Using GPU in another build, no GPU issue. Using another GPU in my build. Doesnt work, same issue, restarts over and over again.

Checking contact between cooler and CPU, was too high the first time (little contact) removed a set of washers ( got clean contact).

Pump works ( can feel vibrations in the loop connectors so liquid is flowing)

The build used to let me into bios and displayed 89C temps or just restart, reseated cooler and it wont let me into bios (I followed instructions clearly, no mess ups there, could me removing a layer of washers really do something? Contact wasnt good before I removed washers).

I suspect the PSU. Could it be the PSU? Ive tried literally every other fix.

    I haven't built a PC in 12 years...

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 10:09 AM PST

And I have never built a dedicated gaming rig. Now I want to build to build a VR capable gaming PC from the ground up. What do I need to know? My budget is flexible but I really just don't know much about what components are any good these days and what I really need vs what is extra (i.e. Intel vs AMD, water cooling? etc...)

    Thanks for any replies!

My SSD is six years old. Are today's models faster?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:45 PM PST

I have a Crucial M500 960GB SSD in my 16GB RAM 2012 Macbook Pro. The drive was released in early 2013. Both it and the computer are SATA 3 (6 Gbps).

I am happy with the Macbook's performance and don't need a larger drive. That said, swapping sometimes makes the computer almost unusable until MacOS finishes shuffling virtual memory around. Would a 2019-model 1-2TB SSD be meaningfully faster?

    Video Editing/Gaming Machine Build Help

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 02:43 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a new PC for my business and it's been a long time since my last build. I'm looking for some advice on the components I have picked out, specifically the Ryzen. I've always used Intel and the idea of switching has me a little nervous. I should note that I also would like to play games on this as well.

I currently use Adobe Creative Cloud software (Premiere, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc) and will be re-using my GTX 1070 Ti from my older machine for gaming needs.

I'd really appreciate any feedback you all can give me. Thanks!

Best high end/premium pc cases 2019

Are there any list of cases like this? I know InWin has some popular stuff but I'm not a fan of their looks (the D frame looks bad imo, same with Yong).

I like to build a PC every 5 years or so. I use the PC exclusively for gaming. I recently bought a 1440 144hz monitor. It hurts my old computer and makes it cry. So it's time for an upgrade. If like to run most things at that 144 fps if I can. I'd also like to run VR on this system as well. My budget is around 1100-1200 usd ($1500 Canadian). I'm happy with my old case. I don't usually overclock anything.

My few questions would be: 1. I get a warning about the mobo and cpu. From what I understand, if I get the max, it should be comparable with the new gen of ryzen? 2. How do I install windows these days? Last build I used my dvd drive 3. What VR set would you recommend? 4. Any suggestions for improvements or areas I can save a bit?

    Your help is much appreciated!
