    Samsung A40 vs Samsung M20 (64gb)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 06:25 AM PST

    Hello fellow Samsung'ians :)
You are all way more knowledgy about this brands products so I seek your guidance and wisdom!

A friend of mine is interested in buying a new smartphone, and with the current Black Friday sale, the A40 is at 188€ and the M20 at 169€.

Could you guys give me your opinion on which would be the best quality/price to buy? Or even alternatives?

    Info:
    Budget is lower than 200€
She has an Acer from like 5 years ago
Key things would be battery and photo quality

    My opinion:
I suggested the M20, mainly because it's cheaper, has more battery, and I don't think the difference in cameras would be that noticeable to someone who's rocking an Acer from 5 years ago, and still uses it to take photos.

    Thanks in advance guys,
    prd0x

New to the community, hi everyone!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:07 PM PST

Just joined the Samsung family and couldn't be happier! Last month I bought a Galaxy Watch Active 2 and yesterday a Galaxy Note10+ and damn, this device feels like nothing I've ever used before. The overall experience is fantastic, can't wait to push this little beast to its limit and find out what it's capable of.

Do you think we will see a day when Samsung provides more than two system updates?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:02 PM PST

Seriously. Will Samsung ever get past that 2 system update threshold? Will they ever realize that $1,000+ devices should be supported past just 2-3 years? I wish everyone would call, message, tweet, email, etc Samsung and let them know they should not abandon the S8 and Note 8. I don't care if people say it doesn't make a difference. I'm going to continue to hit up chat support, message them and contact them however I can. I encourage anyone else to do the same. Keep it clean and polite but let them know you want more updates on your S8 and Note 8!

Storage says 15.65/16 GB full and I have almost no apps installed and no files. What do I do?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 02:05 AM PST

    Let's give this another go.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 08:49 PM PST

    **#The Case**
We all saw that Samsung dropped Android 10 support for the Note 8 and S8. They will likely cease monthly security updates, per their schedule, in about a year.

It is, quite frankly, deplorable that Samsung would leave $1000 phones behind on security. Quarterly security updates simply don't provide the same kind of protection as monthly security updates.

*Brace for the same thing people have been saying on this sub for the last few days and ever year.*

We absolutely should be receiving longer support. There is no question. Four years of Android version support on at least flagships would be ideal, maybe even more to match iPhones. Planned obsolescence is simply not compatible with the secure and sustainable world that we aim to create in the 21st century. In addition, many Samsung users, most of whom do not know any better, will use their phones beyond the support period, leading to greater security risks as they acquire more and more security vulnerabilities. As users use their phones for longer, this will become a greater and greater issue. **We don't need another Stagefright-scale vulnerability or attack.**

Many of us using unlocked devices have the option of getting around this limitation by unlocking the bootloader and installing custom ROMs like LineageOS, Resurrection Remix, etc.-- that is, if you live outside the US.

As I have said many times before on this sub and r/GalaxyNote8, the SM-N950U1 (US unlocked Note 8) and SM-G950U1 (US unlocked S8) do not have unlockable bootloaders. Neither do US unlocked variants of the S9 series, Note 9, S10 series, or Note 10 series. Samsung has said before that this is due to "carrier limitations," limitations that have been demonstrated not to exist as indicated by the fact that 1) they released the OneUI beta to US unlocked devices well before carrier variants, and 2) most other major Android phone companies here in the US have unlockable bootloaders. As for the Snapdragon excuse, see the Hong Kong variants, which do have unlockable bootloaders.

If Samsung is unwilling to provide updates (itself utterly shameful, especially when it comes to $1000 flagships), so be it: let the developers take it from here. They've shown that there is nothing limiting them from letting developers and enthusiasts enable OEM unlock on our devices, save for an incomprehensibly small amount of profit, which would arguably made up for by developer appeal, nabbing a larger share of the US's vibrant developer market from Google and OnePlus.

In short, the goal here is to get an unlockable bootloader on US unlocked devices like the SM-N950U1 and SM-G950U1 (and any other regional unlocked variants of Samsung devices that I am unaware of with locked bootloaders), and, if the community is willing to tackle it, Android version support from Samsung of no less than four years. These demands should apply at least to flagship devices, including the S8 and Note 8.

    **#The Action**
So, how exactly do we get Samsung's attention?

For one, this sub: this is one of the largest Samsung communities on the internet and is certainly browsed by Samsung employees. If we make noise by posting here, this could help show higher demand for such features.

There are also other options. It might be possible to demand these features via posting on other Samsung social media, including their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Contacting support and requesting features through Samsung Members could also show demand. Posting on Samsung's own forums could also be a great way to show demand.

And, thinking *very* unconventionally, the memelords here might be able to turn this into a meme. I suspect that they will be met with little success if they try to meme unlockable bootloaders (I challenge the memelords here to prove me wrong). However, memeing four years of version support or longer would be more feasible and appeal to a broader audience outside of enthusiasts, especially if memelords compared it to the iPhone's amount of support.

**#You're an idiot, u/CyberConCoder, this will never be successful**
I know I'm the former. Heck, I almost didn't post this.

What made me do it anyway was because I know that mobilization will prove the latter wrong. I've seen how it is in the Android community: wishes of longer support and unlockable bootloaders shot down by stark practicality. We don't even attempt to try, we just assume guaranteed failure.

Here's my response to that: if we try, what could we lose? And if we don't, **this endless cycle of planned obsolescence will never end***. We'll be met with the same exact thing every year: wishes of longer support and unlockable bootloaders shot down by stark practicality. And as those years go by, phone prices will likely still keep creeping up.

We've seen the power of Reddit before and how, as a giant community, we've been able to get big companies to make huge decisions in our favor. We have an incomprehensibly great amount of influence.

Let's use that power to do some good in the world.

I have a S9+ that I unfortunately beat to hell so I am looking to replace it and I kinda like the note 10. But I am unsure about the camera being right on the screen, when you watch youtube or netflix or whatever does the camera get in the picture?

Charging my Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2019 03:07 AM PST

The charging port on my Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) barely works anymore. It is always charging very slowly, and only does anything at all when it is in a very odd position. Would you recommend me to have someone fix it, or is that not worth it and should I get me a new phone? (I have had the thing for 2.5 years)
