Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon vs Razer Stealth 13 vs Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:45 PM PST

My basic requirements are i7 10th Gen, 16 GB ram and 256 SSD.

    Budget: About $1300

I don't care much about the 4k display however I need it to be thin and light to be able to carry it around all day. I will mainly use it for programming and need something with a good battery.

I just found out that the X1 Carbon does not have a dedicated graphics card wanted to know how essential is that for programming? I am not a PC Gamer but I have seen that in the case of a normal UHD 620 Graphics card, a lot of the processing is done by the graphics card. Would it make a significant difference if I got, for example, the GeForce RTX 1050 card?

I really like the X1 Carbon because it has great reviews in regards to battery life and keyboard etc.

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

    SORRY M VERY CONFLICTED

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:30 AM PST

Hey! I was wondering whether the MSI GS65 or Lenovo Y740 would be a better purchase! Sorry for repost the Lenovo website deal ran out so I was unable to purchase it!

    Lenovo Legion Y740 15" - (from Costco 1349.99):

    -9th Gen Intel® Core™ i7

    -15.6" IPS

    -16GB 2666MHz DDR4

    -Hard Drive: 1TB HDD + 512GB SDD

    -Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX™ 2060

MSI GS65 Stealth 15"- Matte Black With Gold Diamond Cut (from BestBuy 1399.99):

    -15.6", 240Hz

    -32GB DDR4 Ram

    -512GB Solid State Drive

I heard build quality improved for the 2019 GS65 plus I think I'll be able to get 10% cash back. I heard thermals aren't that good but how bad is it?

I am currently a college student planning to play games on my off-time. I plan to play games like MW, League of Legends,

Fortnite, and possibly other titles like BF5, overwatch, etc...

    I was also looking at the alien ware m15 with 9th gen intel i7/ RTX 2060(OC ready)/ 15.6" FHD 240 Hz/ 512GB SSD+1 TB hybrid Drive/ 16 GB memory(~$1518.99)

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G GA502DU - Good deal for £930?

So I just stumbled across this laptop...

Am I right in thinking that those specifications for that price is a good deal? If I'm wanting to use the laptop for gaming and programming (nothing too intensive), will this be a good buy for the money?

A budget travel laptop for video editing

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 03:34 AM PST

    Hello Laptop people

I have been on the search for a budget travel laptop for video editing.

    Country: USA
    Budget: <$650
Physical requirements: Travel, 14" seems about right.
Purpose: Traveling with me, will be mostly video editing.. possibly 4K video but definitely 1080p video. Will also do some photography editing using Lightroom. Watching videos, browsing, and the normal usage.

If possible a matte screen with nice colors and brightness would be ideal.
I'm assuming I need something with a nice monitor. And from what I'm reading Intel seems the best for video editing.

Any tips out there? I am at a loss on what to get with so many choices

Looking for recommendations on a laptop for my mom.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 02:30 AM PST

The Sims 3 is the most strenuous thing she uses a PC for, but it's apparently kind of a pain to run despite the ten-year-old system requirements. A built-in SSD to deal with the notorious load times would be great, but it's not exactly a requirement.

I have about a $500 budget. I've been looking at this laptop here, but I'm honestly hesitant simply because it's so much cheaper than what I was planning.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $500 US * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best Specifications **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not very. Despite wanting a laptop, she doesn't often take advantage of its portability. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Occasional dips into other games, but Sims 3 is the biggest focus. No video editing or anything of that sort. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Given that it is such an old game, I'm hoping to get the max settings 60FPS dream. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Not a requirement, but it's be a big plus if it had a built-in SSD. **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Just want to apologize for missing this form in the first place.

    Is this a good deal?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:59 AM PST

After watching the video from linus tech tips on the Lenovo Flex 14 2-in-1 AMD (Ryzen 3500U) I thought it would be the perfect solution for my mother.

She has a very old laptop she doesn't really use anymore. She does everything on her phone right now (including streaming netflix). I am quite convinced that if she would have a laptop with an intuitive and friendly user experience, it would be huge upgrade for her. I think a 2 in 1 would be perfect, preferably one that could work 3-5 years easily.

Now apparently lenovo works with a lot of different model numbers across the globe. This is one I found that seems to resemble it:

    https://www.lenovo.com/nl/nl/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-c-series/Lenovo-IdeaPad-C340-14API/p/88IPC301189

Is this a good deal? Sorry for the dutch language, but if you scroll down you see the specs (I translated the most important ones below):

    600 euro

    Processor AMD Ryzen 5 3500U Processor ( 2.10GHz 2MB )

    OS Windows 10 Home 64

    Screen 14,0"FHD IPS Glare 1920x1080

    Memory 4.0GB PC4-19200 DDR4 SODIMM 2400MHz + 4.0GB PC4-19200 DDR4 Soldered 2400MHz

    Hard disk 512GB SSD PCIe

Warrenty Two year Depot or Carry-in

    AC Adapter 65W

Graphics card AMD Radeon Vega8 grafische kaart

    Battery 4 Cell Li-Polymer

    Bluetooth Bluetooth versie 4.1

    Fingerprint reader Yes

    Touchpad ClickPad

    WLAN Lenovo AC wireless (2x2)

Any feedback or better deals would be appreciated!

Looking for somewhat powerful new laptop with good linux support for programming and gaming

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:14 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1500£, UK

I am looking for a great laptop for around 1500£ with good Linux Support and able to run some new games. So far on the top of my list is Razer Blade 15 and Dell XPS 15. I think I will get one of these.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best thing for my money, with somewhat good battery life. I don't want 2-IN-1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 pre-installed is fine, but I will dual boot Arch Linux. Will take care of that myself.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15,6 or even 13.3"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programs: Ableton Live Suite 10, Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Some games: Minecraft, Factorio, Witcher 3, Civ 5 and 6, etc..

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard reliable build is a big plus, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I said - I am leaning towards Razer Blade 15. I had Macbook Pro before, and it looks and feels like black macbook lol

Razer Blade stealth 13 (late 2019) vs Surface book 2

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:04 AM PST

Okay as the subject suggest i am actually in the market for a ultraportable 13 to 14inch laptop with dedicated graphics.

Currently i am using the Core i7 Surface book 1 with dedicated graphics and looking to upgrade.

I have narrowed my choices down to either Razer blade stealth 13 (late 20190 or Surface book 2.

    https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Stealth-Ultrabook-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B07X4BLSR8/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=razer+blade+stealth+13&qid=1574671335&s=electronics&sr=1-3

    https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-HNM-00001-Windows-i7-8650U/dp/B077Y8GTHR/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=surface+book+2&qid=1574672137&s=electronics&sr=1-6

while both laptops are great and have similar specs the read difference is the core i7 CPU and new GTX graphics in the blade 13 .

On the other hand Surface book 2 has a better battery life upto 17hrs. currently surface book 1 manages atleast 10hrs after having used it for almost 2 years.

I have also seen reviews in which people have warned against 4k touch model of the Razer blade for the same reason as it will drain the battery and overload the GPU. In case anyone has reviewed this configuration with the 4k panel i would love if they can advise me .

what are you running times for the blade 13 with 4K touch?

Battery life is important to me but i do want to do some light gaming , such as fortnight or COD and i am looking to get a 4K touch panel because i am so used to the 3000 x2000 touch panel for the surface book 1 which is carried over to surface book 2

which one is worth the staggering $2000 price tage?

Would You Suggest Microsoft Surface Pro?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:31 AM PST

Hey. So I want to purchase myself a new laptop. I have been using this Dell Latitude E5420 which is awesome for studying and entertainment. It has lasted me more than 4 years, but some keyboard's letters are dead, the screen, flex is half off, etc. Time for an upgrade!

Now, I am mainly into coding, but also a good illustrator. A Friend of mine recommended a Microsoft Surface Pro & I am fascinated by it. Being able to use it as a tablet to learn digital drawing while also using it on a desktop setup for my studies & going along with new technology.

Mainly looking for SSD, 8-16 RAM, i6-i7. Something that will last.

Will a Surface Pro be my best option? What recommendations would you suggest looking up?

Is the helios 300 comparable in value to a desktop? Can i take the CPU, mobo, SSD and RAM out of it and into a desktop when the GPU stops keeping up?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:33 PM PST

I almost pulled the trigger on the asus predator helios 300 today but decided to compare it to a desktop and got counterintuitive results.

Total: 1189$ -- NOT including cooling, cables, etc

I have a keyboard and mouse, and monitor, but i dont think its 144hz. I think counting the Monitor is fair in the price comparison.

All the reviewers say the helios 300 is the "best bang for the buck" / really good deal for that hardware. Even then, I'd have assumed it was less valuable than the equivalent spec'ed desktop. Am I missing something here?

When that GPU eventually gets outdated, can I rip the laptop apart and stick the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and SSD into a Desktop case and just buy a graphics card?

Is the CPU (intel I7 9750H) a CPU someone would put in a desktop? EDIT:no it is not. Anyone know the rough difference, whether by % or reference to what it can handle, between an H and a K? Or is the H still a compromise built for laptop systems, a CPU still weaker than its desktop counterpart. Same question for the dedicated graphics card GTX 1660 Ti, which is supposed to be comparable to a 1070

A great 2-in-1 that's still powerful enough for Adobe CC

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:22 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

$1600 range (willing to go a little higher) -- United States

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

I'd prefer 2 in 1 since I have a great iMac where I do most of my design/video work

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Not critical

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13" to 16"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Adobe CC Suite, primarily Illustrator. It'd be fantastic to do some video work on Premiere, but I primarily use my iMac for all my video. I'd like a touchscreen and stylus that can adequately allow me to sketch and take notes.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    Not gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I'm looking for something reliable -- that is a top (if not the top) qualification. I've been attached to Apple products for a decade after dealing with headache after headache from PC builds. I've loved the reliability and longevity of Apple, but I recognize that they're not close to the only game in town. I'm not necessarily defecting from Apple, but I want a 2-in-1 I can read with or do some basic sketching and notetaking with, but also use as a well-powered laptop for Adobe CC -- and Apple doesn't make a product that fits that bill (the iPad Pro won't run Adobe and isn't enough of a laptop to be a consideration).

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'm replacing a MacBook Air that I'm passing on to my wife. I thought I'd change it up a bit with my next laptop and get one that can be used as a tablet for reading comic books & novels or watching TV/movies, and that could also be used for basic sketching/doodling/notetaking (I'm a graphic designer, so while I love sketching out ideas and also drawing for fun, I don't need the absolute best tablet and stylus unit on the market).

I'm not sure how responsible it'd be, though, if I veered too far away from buying something that I could use as a powerful laptop in order to get some actual work done with Adobe CC while I'm away from my iMac. I want a fun 2 in 1 that I can use as a tablet or a touch screen with a stylus, but will I have to sacrifice the power and functionality of a traditional laptop in order to get the fun and novel features of a 2 in 1?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 07:24 AM PST

On the one hand I need a notebook for Uni, just for everyday stuff, like working in the library or on a project with my friends. On the other hand I want a tablet to take my notes on. So my conclusion was that a convertible would cover both sides. I have a gaming system at home, so this doesn't need to take that role, just light gaming should be possible on the device.

First I was thinking about a surface but currently I am not so sure about that.

Currently I am looking at the HP envy 13,3 with the Ryzen 7. Since now I think this is the best deal I can find. Mostly because the AMD CPU comes with the Vega 10, so very light gaming or just generally stuff that needs a GPU should not be a problem.

Edit: To cover some of the questions in the question list (I am on mobile right now and can't copie that)

    1000€ max in Germany

    Backlit keyboard is a must

    Windows

A stylus or just general pen support for writing and drawing

Preferably thin and light, I don't want to carry something heavy to uni every day

I will be doing general work stuff in office programs, some Matlab, light gaming would be good but not a must, blender and general modeling software and just multi media stuff.

If anything is missing that you need to know just tell me please.

Thin work laptop with decent dedicated GPU

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:58 PM PST

Hey everyone. I'm looking to get a new laptop for Black Friday. My budget is around 1000 dollars but I don't have a hard number. I'm a game dev/CS student and I want a thin laptop with dedicated GPU. Not really concerned with which GPU tbh, but the more VRAM the better. Thanks :)

Solidly built laptop, 15"+, IPS screen, $600, USA. Video watching/multitasking and some light gaming.

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 10:41 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. GOOD IPS screen most important, battery life second.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? 7/10

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Hearthstone. Good enough to be able to tab out of Hearthstone without the entire system being slowed down, preferably. Also without the bottom of it burning my legs off.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Hearthstone! maybe other card games in the future

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good screen to watch videos. Reliable, good build quality. No crazy heating issues or loud fans or breaking parts.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just looking for the best deal over all this black friday madness i suppose

I am trying to find a laptop for gaming and other uses

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:19 PM PST

I am willing to spend around 1.2k on a laptop that is good for gaming and other uses like graphic design and video editing. I'm not trying to run a bunch of triple a games but I would want it to be able to run a few games while also being good to run other programs. I would prefer not to have a bulky laptop, maybe something kinda sleek

I'm sorry if this isn't enough information, I really don't know anything about computers or laptops which is why I'm turning to reddit to help. If you have any questions few free to comment, I should respond fairly fast

    Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 09:35 PM PST

So I found a used XPS for $500 USD. It has a 3200x1800 display, 8gb ram and and i7 6500u (iirc). I want to use it for school work and light gaming, like Terraria and Minecraft. Will these specs be enough to run 60fps on those games, and will the resolution decrease the fps by a lot compared to 1080p
