Why do fibre lines need to be refreshed? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 01:53 PM PST So today after struggling with slow as internet for about two months. I phoned my ISP and said, "I've made no changes to my network, I've tried various other DNS servers, the problem is on all devices." I was 4 months ago at 760mbps and was now at 90mbps on my lan with cat6 so not including the various speeds of my wifi devices and tested with them off anyway. Insert blah, blah spiel about am I sure I made no changes, have I turned it off and on, etc. All done beforehand many times. After they decided to agree it wasn't on my end, they told me to cut power to the fibre box or optibox, whatever it's called. They say they are, "refreshing the line." Told to turn it back on and boom, 860mbps. So why did that happen, how do I prevent it and what does refreshing the line mean. Is this a regular thing I need to do now and how often should it be done? [link] [comments] |
Black Friday / Cyber Monday Deals MEGATHREAD! Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:01 PM PST Since there was previously such positive interest in a BF/CM Megathread for this sub (https://old.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/e25vt2/for_the_mods_any_interest_in_starting_a_stickied/), and at least one Mod gave it approval somewhat, I'm creating this thread in hopes it gets stickied later, because deals are already happening. Post any Home Networking deals you find for Black Friday through Cyber Monday here in this thread. Found a great deal? Order it, then share the love! Some Suggested Guidelines: 1) Include the Sale Price and maybe the Regular Price in parenthesis, and the store. For Example: RouterX for $99 (RP: $149) on B&H Photo [LINK] 2) Post a non-affiliated link to the sale (of course) or mention the store and area where the sale is happening (i.e. Walmart in Minnesota or MicroCenter in Tustin, CA, etc.) 3) Have you used this product before? Give a short review, and hopefully answer a few questions from others: "I currently use these switches myself, and this is a great price for them. 802.3af compliant." 4) Have you not used this product before, and want input whether or not it is a good deal? Say so to start a discussion. "Found this on MicroCenter.com. Are these hard drives good for a 24/7 home NAS? Seems too good to be true." 5) If it is a Limited Time or Limited Number type sale, say so in your post: Flash Sale on RouterY for $49 (usually $129) for the next 2 hours on Amazon. [LINK] 6) This is a First Time trial for this sub, so post any product you think is relevant to Home Networking, and we'll let the Upvotes and Downvotes decide if it is appropriate. I for one would rather have more products listed than not, so be open minded. If it becomes an annual tradition, the Mods can decide what is and isn't allowed later. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:06 PM PST Hello! I'm just the typical dude living in his parent's basement till he gets on his feet. But until then, I have to deal with terrible wifi! I'm in the basement, and the router is upstairs on the other side of the house. I've seen some options. So basically, should I go for a better receiver to plug into my computer? Or should I set up a Mesh Extender? Which ever is better for cost and effectiveness. Thank you for taking the time to help me with my dilemma! And have a great Thanksgiving! [link] [comments] |
How to get rid of double NAT on fiber network? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 06:21 AM PST Hello /r/HomeNetworking , I have a R7000 connected to a fiber ONU. Somehow, I am having an issue of Double-NAT. Plex, as well as OpenVPN is giving me issues. I contacted the ISP and they said that a static IP would fix my issue, I don't believe him a 100%. What's the deal here? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Higher than Expected Internet Speeds and High Latency Posted: 28 Nov 2019 10:09 AM PST I am currently on an internet plan that should have a max download speed of 400 Mbps, yet when I run a speed test on Fast.com I get speeds around 1 Gbps. The fast speed is great and all, but the major downside is that I am getting a latency of around 100 ms. A speed test I just ran shows that I have a download of 1100 Mbps, an unloaded latency of 17 ms, and a loaded latency of 132 ms. This latency is also apparent when I try to do things such as watch streams or play online games. I have called my ISP several times and several technicians have come out to try and fix things, yet either they do not understand the problem or they try to claim that there is no problem at all. Any advice would be much appreciated! Edit: Apparently while I was gone for the past few months a new modem arrived in the mail that I was not told about. The new modem has DOCSIS 3.1, while the previous modem had DOCSIS 3.0, which means that the new modem is now 10 Gbps capable. After swapping out the modems high latency does not appear to be an issue anymore. The unexpectedly high speeds are still odd, but hey I won't complain. [link] [comments] |
Eero Pro (on sale!!) or UDM or Amplifi??? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 09:26 AM PST So, I had my heart set on a UDM.... But Amazon has 30% off Eero hardware, and I'd have to pay a lot extra to get Ubiquiti gear here in Canada... I'm currently using an Asus AC66U with Merlin, located centrally in an 50 year old 1800 square foot house (800 sqft upstairs, 1000sqft downstairs, 800sqft basement.) constructed of wood and asbestos..... Internetspeed is 300mbps. Soon to be upgraded to 600mbps. I have cat6 drops in most of my rooms with an old 18 port gigabit switch in the basement. I have 10 wired connections (a NAS, an Nvidia Shield, etc) I have about 35 wireless connections. I do have another small POE switch plugged into my old 18 port switch running a set of 4 security cameras as well. And a hubitat with a bunch of zwave and zigbee devices. My gut tells me to get the Eero pro + a eero (regular) and save $150.... Just looking for someone to call me an idiot, or alternately, provide confirmation! (UDM = $380USD for me, Eero Pro + eero = $217USD) [link] [comments] |
Replacing Ethernet Switcher with Cisco Switch Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:53 PM PST Hello! My current setup is this. I have a pfSense Virtual Machine that I can migrate on the fly with vMotion, and I am wondering if there is a way that I can integrate this "Ethernet switcher" with some sort of commands in my switch to get rid of this extra piece of hardware. My end goal is for this to be this. I would like to have both the ports always on and ready to accept traffic, but that doesn't have to be a deal breaker. Does anyone know of a way to (I wouldn't say "mirror" because that's not what I am going for) make this work? [link] [comments] |
How to connect home Ethernet ports to router (?) Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:02 PM PST Happy thanksgiving everyone 🦃 Probably very noob question So I came to my parents house that they just got built and they had cable ran through the house that meet at a switch port in the closet downstairs. They were telling me about connectivity issues while hardwiring their devices instead of WiFi so I opened it and checked. I saw the switch with all the 8 Ethernet cables plugged in to it but the router is right above it on a shelf. Not connected to that switch so I'm assuming none of those ports have internet connectivity because it obviously isn't connected to that router. My question is how do I connect this switch and all The ports around the house to the internet? I don't know this switch and it seems very cheap and or bare basic? Any ideas are welcomed! I've never set up a home network so I'm green lol. [link] [comments] |
Travel Router + VPN. Take my devices with me? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:39 PM PST When I travel I bring my Roku and an Amcrest camera to watch the kiddo sleep. The Roku is pretty smart, it'll connect to hotel WiFi but I always end up using my laptop as a hotspot to figure out the Amcrest because it can't do that 2-step login acceptance page (whatever that term is called). Then I can't use Synology Surveillance Station anymore either and I gotta stay close because my laptop range is paltry. Is there a way to configure a travel router to OpenVPN to my home and all my devices appear and behave like they are on my home network? I could keep the travel router SSIDs the same. Even use the same IP assignment scheme...I don't mind configuring the router if it would work. Any products do this? Any suggestions?? [link] [comments] |
Access home network remotely? VPN? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 07:29 PM PST Hi Group I would like to be able to access a web server on my home network when I am away from home. I would like to be able to restrict access to me only. Is a VPN the best way to achieve this? Researching the issue I've read about SSH tunnels, jump hosts, secure proxy servers, VPNs and others. I'm not sure what the best approach is. I found a great guide for using PFSense to set up a VPN: https://turbofuture.com/computers/How-to-Setup-a-Remote-Access-VPN-Using-pfSense-and-OpenVPN Are there better options? Thanks JBS [link] [comments] |
Looking to extended coverage in the house Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:43 AM PST I live in a 3. story townhouse, and due to the age of the wiring of the house my ISP was only able to connect a DSL connection from the basement, so the coverage gets really weak (2-3 bars max but disconnects or won't load pages. often). between. watching movies. and playing games I consider myself a heavy user but my room is on the third floor and my only way to connect is wireless. Ive already looked into extenders but a lot of people usually recommend mesh instead. im looking for more tips from you guys to finally fix my issue thanks for the replies in advance [link] [comments] |
How to run Ethernet cable to a guest apartment? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:09 AM PST I have a guest apartment about 60 feet behind my house that I want to have internet access in. Can this be ran along a power line that extends from the back of my house to the guest house? If this is possible, how do I go about hiring someone to do this? I was told that a WiFi extender probably wouldn't work because the guest house is cinder block on the outside. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 03:02 PM PST Black Friday is upon us! My wife and I have a Nest Outdoor IQ Cam and Hello Doorbell already ordered. I want to run a secondary wireless access point out to the garage so that we have full wifi coverage for the camera/doorbell. Currently, coverage is pretty spotty at best. We currently have an Asus RT-AC66R connected to our router. It's been awesome for the last few years; decent speeds and no dropped coverage. I am going to run an ethernet line from the router out to the garage. There are a few outlets in the garage, though I thought I read somewhere that an ethernet cord can carry power, too (don't know much about this), so I'm not sure if there's an advantage of one over the other. So, questions: 1.) What wireless access point do you recommend (bonus points for a sale)? I'd like to keep it around $100 if possible, but if you can't find anything within that price range you recommend, I can go higher. Any advantage to buying another ASUS? Will they play better with each other if they're the same brand? 2.) Should I move the Asus RT-AC66R out to the garage and use the new access point (whatever you recommend) as the main house router? Or, will it not much matter? We do use the WAP for streaming to our phones and computers, but the main streaming comes from wired cords through a switch to our media center (XBox, TV, HTPC, etc.). As mentioned, the garage WAP would be responsible for streaming/uploading 1080P. 3.) Assume if the SSIDs are the same name, then phones should "seamlessly" switch between the access points, connecting to whichever is stronger? "Seamlessly" in quotes as I've read that not all phones are great at switching. 4.) Anything I haven't considered? Other suggestions? Happy Thanksgiving! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 12:44 PM PST Anyone have an LTE backup connection at home? If so: - What service & plan? - What hardware? I'm asking because I'm considering going with a local fixed wireless ISP. Their cost and speeds are better than Xfinity, but it seems like they do have outages from time to time. Their uptime commitment is 99.5%, with actual averages of 15 minutes unplanned and 15 minutes planned downtime per month. Anyone else have a similar experience? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:08 AM PST My home isn't big, about 1500 Sq ft. My wifi works fine on one side of the home, but it is awful on there other side. My question is does the ISP router produce a weak signal? Would purchasing a better one broadcast a stronger signal throughout the house or is an access point the better option? I don't know how this works, so any information helps. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 06:27 PM PST I subscribe to Internet 300 from Shaw (a Canadian ISP), and I use their Hitron gateway bridged with a Linksys WRT1900ACS running OpenWRT. I've been having issues with my internet, and I think it's caused at least partially by the Hitron gateway. I thought I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to something capable of an IPv6 connection, and I've read that Shaw's new XB6 gateway can do this; however, when I talked online with a Shaw agent today, they told me that Shaw doesn't support IPv6. Do you know why they would tell me this if it's not true? Are there any ISPs in MB that can offer me native IPv6 connectivity? [link] [comments] |

UniFi Controller and AC-Pro stuck at adopting after firmware/software upgrade Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:44 AM PST Today since I had the day off due to Thanksgiving, I decided to update my UniFi Controller software on my server and update the firmware on my AC-Pro unit. I first updated the software to version 5.12.35 for Windows. That went fine and the new software found my AC-Pro. I then updated the firmware on the AC-Pro to 4.0.69 using the direct URL link copy and paste into the controller software. Firmware updated fine and I have WiFi back in the house but now the controller software is trying to adopt the AP over and over and failing. The AP is working fine right now as all my WiFi devices are working again so it's only the software which is having problems. Not sure how to fix this except to maybe go back to the old controller version which I'll need to find again to download. I already rebooted the AP with no different outcome. [link] [comments] |
Additional "Trunk Line" within Main Run of Ethernet? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 11:33 AM PST Hi, looking for guidance on my Ethernet wiring project at home. On one end: Modem --> Router/Wireless access point which will plug directly into desktop computer (media server primarily). From the router, the main line will go from the office, outside the house, through the crawl space, and to a switch near the laundry room. From the switch, it will feed to the TV area (media client and laptop primarily), my Raspberry Pi for home automation, and then up to a few peripherals in the future (PoE security cameras, etc.). My quick question is, due to my amateur experience with networking, is there any reason to add a second cable from the router to the switch down my "trunk line" from the router to the switch? Does that help at all, or can everything be handled down a single cable? I will have some decent photo/video bandwidth needs but probably 1 Gb/s is totally fine, 10 Gb/s seems like unnecessary overkill, but I'm going ahead with Cat-6 for future-proofing (4k I guess), and can pretty easily add a second line (shoot the 500' of spool I'll be getting is way more than enough). I just don't know if that's worth it at all. Thanks in advance. Happy Thanksgiving! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 01:33 PM PST I'm a bit of a newbie, but please bear with me. I have a setup of three nodes connected wirelessly to each other. Almost since the day I got them they keep on disconnecting. The LED flashes red for like a minute or two and connects back. How can I get rid of that issue? [link] [comments] |
Just upgraded internet any router recommendations? Posted: 28 Nov 2019 05:16 PM PST i just got 1gbps and im looking for a high quality router, i connect my pc with Ethernet and the router we have now is super shitty with Ethernet sometimes and i need the best one for Ethernet gaming that is also capable of streaming to multiple devices as other people in the house often stream tv or watch movies. any router recommendations looking to keep it below $250-$275 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 05:00 PM PST Hi, TIL that MoCa exists and it looks like the answer to all my problems. I currently use a pair of Powerline adapters to transmit a signal across the house, but this method has become unsuitable for purpose due to latency spikes into the 1000ms zone. I want to use the existing coax wiring to act as an Ethernet alternative (as Ethernet is an impossibility) but I don't want to break the bank. My question is: can I use a MoCa adapter designed for use in CCTV systems for my purpose? This is the sort of thing I had in mind: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Huasion-Extender-Converter-Ethernet-Security/dp/B07L6X94XS/ref=sr_1_96?keywords=ethernet+over+coax&qid=1574985461&sr=8-96 I don't care about speed, as the speed coming into the house is less than 10mbps anyway, I just want a reliable and non-laggy connection. I would rather not splash the cash on something expensive, as a lot of them seem overkill for my needs and would need to be imported from the US and therefore be even more costly. If anyone could assist it would be very much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:57 PM PST Hey All, Currently I am in need of a mesh wifi system for about a 3500sq ft home. With Black Friday coming up, there are some networks on sale. I've been looking at reviews and what not and the recommended ones I see are linksys velop (3 devices), netgear orbi(2 devices) and google nest wifi (3 devices). These ones also are on sale in my area. Just need to know what would be the best option for me. I was leaning towards the velop or the orbi but there are disconnect issues? So I'm not sure how bad the disconnect issues are. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Internet Fiber upload speed capped at 1 Mbps Posted: 28 Nov 2019 04:15 PM PST It's been 2 months since my ISP installted fiber in my new appartement, everything works great ping looking good ,download speed is around 100Mbps which is what i paid for but for upload speed i keep getting around 1 Mbps, in what world is this possible ?After sending so many complains for five days straight to my ISP about this issue they said "there is actually no problems sir with your internet line everything seems to work just fine" TX/RX optical power stats are decent, modem used : Modem ont Huawei HG8245A ( provided by the isp ) Not only i'm paying 200$ a month but i have to stay subscribed and pay for 10 more months to fulfill the "one year contract policy" in order for me to be eligible to change the subscription for a lower one 50Mbps or even lower since my only concern is to stream on diffrent platforms, anyways here i'm stuck with a 200$ 1 mbps upload fiber internet wondering what in the world should i do, can my ISP limits speeds just like that ? i currently live in Algeria and there is only one ISP any tips or recommandations to solve this whole mess would be much appreciated. Edit : I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this post if not feel free to redirect me to another, thank you. [link] [comments] |
