New computer power supply catches fire Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:16 PM PST Hi, I'm a little new to computer servicing, but I figured changing a power supply on my desktop wouldn't be a big deal. So I bought a new power supply, same wattage as the old one, which was recommended by a service technician I know (gigabyte gp-g750h). It's a relatively old computer, hasn't been turned on in a year or two. So I replaced the power supply, replaced all the cables correctly (90% sure of this, may have missed one), then I turned it on. I had to press the power button once, twice, then I held it down for a few seconds. It turned on, I heard and saw a spark coming from what seemed to be the new power supply. There was definitely some fire like light coming out of the case, and now there's a burnt smell. I turned it off, whatever it was it went away immediately. What did I do wrong? [link] [comments] |
