    Why don't I see dell G3 3579 recommendations?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:27 PM PDT

I'm looking for budget gaming laptop and so did a lot of research and saw recommendations for many devices, but haven't seen a single (recent) recommentation for the G3 3579. I know it's last year's model, but I saw a g3 3579 (i5 8300h gtx1060) on amazon US for $740 and that puts it above most laptops people recommend on that price range. So is it just because it's an older laptop or are there more issues with it? Also, if anyone has a better alternative, I'm open for suggestions.

Suggest a Laptop under 3k for moderate gaming, and CAD work in the US

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 01:57 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: 2800-2900

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: No 2 in 1, looking for best specs for the price

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important, will be sitting on a desk while it is in use.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Would like a 17" screen, but its not critical if better specs go with a smaller screen size.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Moderate/Heavy CAD work and gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Want to be able to run Mechwarrior 5 mercenaries at high settings, with the possibility of vr (not critical), Elite Dangerous and Borderlands 3 on high settings

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit Keyboard since I work at night and it can get darker. A plus if I can pick what colors the keys are and if I can make them do different lighting effects. Large storage space would be nice, but don't need something crazy. Reliable build quality is a must since it will be traveling back and forth from home to work on a daily basis

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Would like something future proof for a good few years. The wifi at the office is terrible so if at all possible a RJ45 port would be nice, if not, Im sure a USB to RJ45 would get the job done but my connection has to be wired some how.

durable laptop for college and some light gaming

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 01:24 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

Up to 1000€, Lithuania so everything is probably gonna be a bit more expensive here.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I just want decent battery life and good cooling (not too loud, not too hot).

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not extremely but a lighter one would be nice

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inches would be nice

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll probably be doing some coding just not sure to what extent. Light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Some esports titles like cs go or rocket league, maybe even rainbow six siege. 60fps on high would be preferable but I dont mind turning the settings down a bit.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Decent build quality so it lasts longer and a good keyboard would also be great.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Basically I just need a durable laptop with good batteries and a dedicated gpu that could handle some light games. If my budget is a bit low for what I want I don't mind cranking it up a bit especially if that means I can get a way better product.

Moving to Norway for work, looking to sell my desktop and replace it with a laptop so I can bring it with me

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $3,000 USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications, but not look too gamer. Still looking for a good/clean aesthetic

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important. Really looking for a desktop replacement I can bring with me to Norway and then bring back in a potential move back in a few years

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15" but not super important since I will be using it with an external monitor

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, minor photo editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? red dead redemption 2, total war, civ VI, but also be future proof

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, IO. A Norwegian (or Danish with movable key caps) keyboard layout option is a bonus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am relocating for at least 2.5 years to Norway for work. Since I don't don't want to deal with bringing my desktop with me I plan on selling it and buying a laptop to use as my "desktop" in Norway so that I can bring it back with me if I come back to the states when my contract ends mid 2022.

    Durable and serviceable?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:35 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Looking to spend $600 usd or less if at all possible. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in one would be nice as this is for work and I'd like to be able to play civ6 on lunch. Battery life is not as necessary as this will be stationary and plugged in most of the time but needs to be able to move easily.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important, but in the form factor I'd most prefer (tablet-like PC) these come with the territory usually. Durability and serviceability are far more important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No weird resolutions. Something that could be plugged in for a presentation if absolutely necessary is a plus.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Excel, browsing, civilization 6.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Civilization 6. Needs to run it and not be 10,000 degrees.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Tablet-like. Multiple USB ports. Serviceable.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a spare 2.5" 500 GB Samsung SSD I could throw in it. Otherwise an m.2 would be nice. If a tablet-style PC is not available with all of this a foldable would be second best.

Need a new laptop for school, $500 - $699, Maybe a little light gaming

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -USA $500-$699
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Best specifications preferred but also want good battery, dont want a touchscreen
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -fairly important as i want to carry it around, last one wasnt bad (lenovo thinkpad 14) but wouldnt mind it being lighter (No touchscreen should help)
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows preffered
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • 13.3 - 14
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • Would be nice to be able to play some casual games
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • Fortnite, maybe be able to play rainbow six siege my friends play, not too worried with gaming tbh
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • Had a lenovo thinkpad touchscreen, really did not like or use it for that matter. The rotation lock would get stuck and i would have to restart it often, was very frustrating.

Like i said above i had a lenovo thinkpad 14 that had a touchscreen and although the performance was good the layout and lenovo software was frustrating to deal with, especially with the rotation lock always acting up. Other wise the performance was decent enough for everyday tasks but not good for gaming and sometimes would freeze from too many applications, specifically if i opened a lot of photos. Just wanting a new smooth running computer with updated software as i believe my last computer only had a intel i5 and i would prefer an i7 now for better performance. Thanks

[Question] What pc can I get for 1000$

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:41 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 at USA.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Whatever is best for gaming

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Honestly don't want the item itself to be very thick maybe in the normal range

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Either windows or Mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing lower than a 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, like APEX/COD/etc and playing games on steam etc

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing in particular but something reasonable

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is a big yes so if that is possible it would be great

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Honestly (Iknow I'll get a lot of comments for this but) in all honestly is the 13" MacBook Pro worth the money?

College student looking for first laptop

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:44 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 at USA.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Whatever is most useful for college in Computer Science is preferred. Open to options since will primarily use for schoolwork.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Portability and ease of use is very important to me. I have a good desktop that I primarily use whenever at home, so the laptop is simply for schoolwork.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. More familiar with Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I had wanted portability so thought I would go with a 13", but I've heard that 15" would be better suited for coding?

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No games, really. But if I need such software in future classes that would require power, it would be great to have. I'm not sure if I would ever need it, though. I will have all kinds of IDE on it such as IntelliJ, Codeblocks, and such.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I can play whatever on my desktop, so the laptop simply needs to be able to fill whatever my course needs for computer science until I graduate.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is a prime concern. I wish for one that doesn't have such a high failure rate and good customer service for repairs. Next concern would be the keyboard since I will be coding.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Would the new 10th gen 15" HP Spectre x360 do if I can get it for $200 off? I don't really have to get the newest laptop, but I would appreciate any suggestions that offer more value at a lower price. This will be the first laptop I'd ever purchased and would kindly like to ask for opinions on choosing and buying one.

    A relitivly lightweight Powerhouse

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 09:50 PM PDT

    Usecase:

A little 4k Video Editing, some 3D Rendering, a good amount of the Unity Engine, some light gaming, and Virtualization, lots and lots of virtualization (Everything from Linux desktops to Nintendo Switch, to PS4). I don't have a desktop and would be using this thing as my daily driver. I don't travel a ton but when I do nice battery life when doing simple stuff is greatly appreciated. (I understand Gaming/Rendering and battery life don't mix, but I need it to handle simple stuff with longer than battery life than 30 minutes).

    Roughly the specs I need:

    CPU: 8 cores, 5ghz

    Ram: 32GB

GPU: Something 20 series (ex: RTX 2070 or 2080, max-q is fine)

    Other Features:

    I need a touch a touch display!

I'm still in debate about 4k due to how few of my programs support it. I guess I wouldn't mind it though. But I'd prefer more battery life.

Refresh rate higher than 60hz is not necessary, I'd prefer more battery life. But I'd prefer a higher refresh rate over 4k.

    I/O:

The more the better but the minimum is 2x USB 3.1 Type-A, 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports. 1x Full HDMI would be greatly appreciated but unnecessary as long as there's thunderbolt.

    Battery:

Coming from a Surface book 2, I understand it's one of the best at good performance with great battery life but I need it to have good enough power-saving features to not die after 30m in idle, 4 to 5+ hours would be good but the more the better.

    Misc:

Because I travel I need it to be relatively lightweight, I can't be hauling around an Alienware 17.

A pen would be nice to have. But I might just need to get a full Wacom tablet or a surface go separately and that would be ok.

Because I deal with 4k videos and some much virtualization, I need a 1TB ss minimum, I know it's rare, but the more the better.

    Budget:

    Roughly 3K USD (Flexible)

    Summary:

This is a lot of detail to ask for, I understand that, and I'm perfectly fine sacrificing some features for others. I guess what I'll leave you with is, Show me what ya got! :)

Need something for school with occasional gaming

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:37 PM PDT

I am getting a laptop for school, I do mostly web based stuff and occasional gaming, but mostly esports titles such as rocket league or overwatch, I already have a gaming PC for more intense tasks. The surface pro interests me for it's hybrid capabilities, but if I just get a normal laptop, I can get an iPad for tablet needs. Battery life and long lasting performance is pretty important to me. Any budget works for me, I have saved 1500, but can save more If needed. Windows and USB C are must haves

    Suggest a laptop to me!

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:26 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My total budget is about 250-300 dollars. Country of purchase is the US (If I could do even less for a laptop that would be awesome)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Anything that can last at least 5-6 hours. Even more would be cool too.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer for it to be somewhat thin, as I will be doing traveling with this. But if its also somewhat heavy, I don't mind as long as its not a big chunky heavy laptop.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? Does not matter to me
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will just be browsing the internet, watching youtube (Probably max 720p), visiting reddit, etc. Nothing heavy will be done on here.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Anything as long as it works.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Right now I have a gaming pc, ive been wanting to invest into a cheap okay/decent laptop to start carrying with me. Since I want to start going out more. And also when im laying in bed I want something to watch videos on, since usually my phone is really slow and laggy. So anything that can watch videos, and do internet browsing on is a good laptop to me! I would also prefer if the laptop is white. Its just one of my favorite colors.

Hey, I am currently a college student in the engineering field. The current laptop I have is great but is quite slow and janky. I fear that it won't be able to use programs such as AutoCAD and Revit without hindering my laptop's performance. Here's what I'm looking for:

    • Less than or equal to $1,000 USD
    • 8gb RAM
    • like 1 TB storage
    • New
    • Good Battery Life (like an hour without charging is good enough for me)
      • Also, a battery that can be consistent without degrading at a fast rate
    • Seamlessly Run AutoCAD and Revit

Hopefully, this doesn't come off as too specific or too needy

    Laptop for Designer

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:26 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Hi, I'm a graphic designer looking for a good laptop that is within a budget of max $2,000 but ideally to be about $1,500. I'm currently in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like one with specs that can handle graphic editing and with good color screen display. I have heard a suggestion that it should have at least a decent SSD, i7 core, 8GB RAM.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't mind it being heavy or big in size.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I have been using Windows but I am open to explore Mac as well.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? A 15" inch would be nice. 13" will be fine.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm using Adobe Creative Suite, mostly editing static graphics and occasionally 2D animation in After Effects. I might also be interested in trying out Blender for 3D design in the future.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer one that is reliable and durable since I'm travelling a lot with it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It has been a battle to choose between a Mac and a PC. I also don't know much about laptop specs. I would love to hear what you can recommend for the specs for design works. Any help is much appreciated!

Laptop for gaming (not heavy), streaming, and general browsing

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:00 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under $1000 (the farther under the better), USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor a requirement, would like a long-ish battery so I don't feel the need to be tethered to a charger

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, I would prefer around 3-ish pounds if possible, thinness is nice as well. I'm coming from a MacBook Air, so something along those lines would be great, if possible!

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, would be most used for games

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13", anything bigger is more annoying to carry around. Slightly over 13" is fine if necessary. 1920x1080 for resolution, doesn't need to be anything higher than that, since those eat battery faster.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only gaming from this list. Steam and Epic Games Store.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Looking to mostly run lower-powered games, such as: Slay the Spire, Dicey Dungeons, etc. as well as maybe something like XCOM/XCOM2, Surviving Mars. No brand-new AAA games, or stuff like PUBG/Fortnite, but some lower-requirements stuff/older stuff. 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps would be good.

    • Would like to run emulators, I would love it if I could pull off PS2/GameCube at the highest, although I realize those may not be doable.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Touchscreen not at all a requirement, I don't anticipate using it as a tablet too much, but do want the 2-in-1 factor to be able to stream video in "tent" mode.

    • Fingerprint reader would be neat, but not a requirement.

    • No "butterfly"-style keyboards, those are loud and annoying.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    New laptop suggestions

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:54 PM PDT

My wife and I are wanting to get a new laptop. We are stuck on what to get. We really just need something for writing and updating resumes and for the kids to do homework on and maybe occasionally using an online photo editor. She wants to get a chromebook and an external hard drive for storage and I like the idea of having a laptop with windows 10 since I am familiar with it. I just don't know enough about chrome books to know if that would work for us. Also not wanting to spend a ton of money. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Laptop for programming and everyday use

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:48 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA - $600

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I do not prefer a 2 in 1 form factor and a good battery is very important to me

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I would prefer it more, but if you can't find a thin one it is fine as long it is not overly bulky

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15 - 17 inches

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I am going to run Visual Studio, PyCharm, and IntelliJ IDEA

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I am not going to play any games on it

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A reliable build quality is important, I don't need a fingerprint reader, I would like an optical drive and about 3 USB ports (3.0 prefered, but 2.0 is fine), I would like it to be fairly new (released in the past 2 - 3 years), and for the keyboard I would prefer chiclet keys (it is fine if it doesn't have them)

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Looking for something new to replace my 5 year old budget gaming laptop

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:10 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
Aiming for around 1200, but I can go higher for something higher quality.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      Best specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Irrelevant

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Might do CAD, but mostly gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Forza Horizon 4, high+, 60fps+ Older titles maxed out, 60fps+

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Build quality. My plastic-y current laptop is quite literally falling apart.
Good thermals. I will sacrifice performance for something that doesn't try to cook itself. I don't care about fan noise.
      120hz+ screen.
Good keyboard and touchpad, as it is primarily a laptop for laptop sake. I like the physical buttons on the touchpad.
G-Sync would be a nice bonus, but I could be convinced otherwise.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking at the Lenovo Y540, Y740; Asus Strix Scar 17" with the GTX 1070 (local store has one open box for $1050); MSI GE63 and GL63; HP Omen series; Eluktronics Mech-15; and Powerspec 1520. The last two are a bit expensive, but I'm considering it.

Durable laptop for travel, business, and coding. Close to 700$ but up to 1000$ if it is worth it

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 12:56 PM PDT

Heys guys. I need to buy a new laptop and was wondering if I could get some recommendations.

I will be traveling so i need a solid laptop since i will be doing most of my work remotely. I want something that is quick and decent for coding and algorithms, and business analytics.

I want it to be under 1000$ and I am not a gamer so I dont need anything too crazy. Might want something that could add two external monitors and I dont need a 2 in 1 tablet laptop, but it doesnt matter.

I was thinking about one of the lenovo models, specifically the x390, x395, or something in the T series, but could probably be convinced into a macbook, dell, or hp or something else if it fits me the best.

Also, I would prefer to spend around 700$ but if its perfect, i would pay closer to 1000$ for extra quality if its much better for me. I would also consider waiting until black friday to try to snag an x1 closer to 1000$. all in all, I want the best value, and something timeless that will last a very long time

    Thanks.
