This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    2080 Ti Build Advice?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 09:14 AM PDT

    Hi!

My existing PC is 9 years old so it's time for an upgrade.

Here's a new build I'm considering, mainly for gaming. It's relatively extreme but my thought was to go big or go home :)

    Thoughts?

Beware of buying from Amazon! (Pics in post)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 12:40 PM PDT

I bought a Radeon rx 5700 from Amazon, the first card they sent was packaged nicely but the HDMI port didn't work, so to be fair that probably wasn't their fault.

They sent a replacement and it just came. They sent it without a fucking box! They just slapped the label on the actual Radeon box and sent it to me!

The box is torn, it's dented in from being dropped. It was placed on my front porch for anyone to see that I ordered a $350 graphics card.

Here are the pics: Amazon's bright shipping department https://imgur.com/gallery/mCKz0lj

This is the first time I've ever received an item from Amazon without a box, it blows my mind that out of all the peoples hands this product went through to get to my door, not one person said "holy shit this is an expensive computer part, this isn't packaged right, we need to ship this back and get this fixed"

Can I upgrade a prebuilt pc?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 02:09 PM PDT

So about 2 years ago I bought the cheapest pc I could find because I was low on money and I needed something, now I have more money and I am looking to upgrade. Can I just upgrade the pc I now have? It's a Dell Optiplex 780.

Upgrading to an RTX 2070 Super, want to cross check the PSU and MB comparability. Also any other possible bottlenecks with an older build.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 12:44 PM PDT

Currently looking to upgrade my graphics cards and monitor with it but I'm having a little problem cross checking everything is compatible.

I'm looking to get an RTX 2070 Super (link). I'm pretty sure my motherboard is compatible (link) - PCI Express x16 slot, another page says it's gen3.

If I'm correct my PSU has the right cables (link) an EPS/ATX12V 8-4 pin (which is the 8 pin?) and 6+2 Pin PCI-Express (which is the 6 pin?). It's 650W and 550W is recommended for the card.

I made the PC about 4 years ago on a medium budget and I'm hoping not to upgrade any of the other parts. Would anyone with a bit more experience be able to have a quick scan and tell me if anything is going to be a bottleneck/reduce the performance. The aim is for gaming at 1440p with the latest titles AAA titles (CoD, Red Dead 2) at the highest settings. From the benchmarks I've seen around 80-100fps hopefully.

    Specs:

    CPU- Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600 CPU @ 3.30GHz

    MB - Z170-HD3 DDR3-CF

    RAM - Crucial 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Ballistix Sport Memory x 2

    M.2 SSD HD

    Mini-itx first time build advice

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:51 PM PDT

Hi, I would appreciate some help on my first build. The most important factor to me is that it is a small case so that it is less of a hassle to move and if I move countries then I don't have to sell or ship it. I will mostly be using it for general computer use, small bits of coding here and there, some gaming but nothing crazy.

I already have 1x SSD and 1x HDD that I will be using, and possibly adding a second SSD (or replacing the HDD) at some point for running a linux machine on and dual booting that (prefer not to partition my windows drive).

Is my parts list OK? I'm not sure if a) everything will fit OK and b) if I need to consider any additional cooling. I also wouldn't be mad if I could knock another £50-£100 off the price so any suggestions there would also be appreciated. TIA!

Need to know if i should return this card.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:59 AM PDT

So ive had a 2070s for almost month, and ive been extremely unsatisfied. i only get around 40-55fps on gta v, 60-90 on pung, and overall just not impressed. i have a 4790k which i know is limiting me, but ive read that people who have that cpu can getter better frames with worse gpus. also only playing on 1920x1080. Only have a couple days left before i cant return it and could really use help deciding if its the gpus fault or not. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/21233370

My corsair vengeance DDR4-3200MHz doesn't work

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:30 AM PDT

So I've built my pc about a month back, after I put the parts together I booted the system for the first time and selected 3200MHz as my ram speed, It wasn't booting. So i took the cmos jumper to reset the bios and just tried 2133MHz ram speed, this worked fine.

Today I tried to set my ram speed to 3200MHz again but it was again not booting, at 3000 MHz it was booting but after 5 minutes I gained a bluescreen so I decided to put it back to 2133MHz and this works fine. But here's my question why isn't it working like it should, I bought 3200MHz ram and normally my mobo can handle it so I have no clue where the problem is.

    Power supply for ASUS X570/Ryzen 5 3600/RX 5700

Everything seems good except it gives me a note at the bottom: "Note: The Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector but the Corsair CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply does not. This connector is used to supply additional 12V current to the motherboard. While the system will likely still run without it, higher current demands such as extreme overclocking or large video card current draws may require it."

I'm not planning on overclocking. Will I be OK with this power supply for this build or do I need to find another one with the additional 4-pin? I'm not sure if the RX 5700 counts as a "large video card draw".

Upgrading to Ryzen 5 from Ryzen 3 2200g?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 02:00 PM PDT

    I have a Ryzen 3 2200g and I'm thinking about upgrading to a Ryzen 5 1600 (or 2600 if there's a sale).
My mobo is an MSI B450M PRO-VDH Plus and my GPU is an RX580 4gb. Would there be any compatibility issues and how do I go about making this upgrade?
Any feedback is welcome and thanks for reading!

This beast of a build is for a friend. He wanted to get into the building and I said I'd help out because I don't mind spending someone else's money. Is there anything you would change out? It's pretty much directly from that increments chart but I haven't kept my ear to the ground about PC parts in years.

What I'm really looking for is validation.

Computer Restarting Automatically While Loading Into Windows

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 04:00 PM PDT

So I've been through hell while working on my friend's computer in the last week or so, and I can't figure out what's wrong. I'm just going to briefly summarize what initiated the issues, and a few steps I've taken in hopes of resolving them, and hopefully one of you can provide me with some feedback that will finally fix this thing. So he had a really old stock cooler and was getting temps in the lowers of the 80 degrees Celsius range, and so I replaced his stock cooler with a NH-U12P cooler from Noctua. It seemed to be working fine, and his temps weren't going above 36 Celsius as he had a pretty old chip, an FX 4300 I believe, and so we decided to try overclocking it. I'm a beginner to novice when it comes to overclocking, and I was unfamiliar with his motherboard bios, so something went wrong I think. At first the computer would instantly freeze upon booting up, and I didn't even have time to undo the overclock. Eventually I managed to press about 5 buttons within 2 seconds to load his default bios settings, but ever since we've still been having issues. His computer will boot past the motherboard screen, but restarts right as the windows logo finishes loading, and we don't see a sign in screen. We're on windows 10, and I've got a disk that has the OS on it, so I've reinstalled windows probably 5 times. Each time, it works for about 10 minutes, then will only get into windows if I boot it into safe mode. I've replaced everything in his computer except the motherboard and PSU, so unless it's one of those then it's a software issue rather than hardware, though that doesn't make much sense to me as we've reinstalled windows multiple times. We've replaced his CPU with a FX 6300 thinking that we had blown out the CPU with the overclock from 3.8 GHZ base to 4.00 GHZ, but that didn't fix the problem either. I'm skeptical currently of the motherboard, but at this point I genuinely have no clue. Sorry if this was a little vague, I'm not very familiar with computer vocabulary, but any suggestions are much appreciated!

Need some opinions on this $1000 CAD build

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:57 PM PDT

Hi! I need some second opinions on this build.

This is my first time building a pc so, I need all the help I can get haha.

My ideal build should be able to do the following:

    1. Play most games (including AAA) at 1080p 60+ FPS at the very least
    2. VR capable
    3. Upgradable
    4. and if it helps, I study software development and I plan to use this PC for school (programming)

Ask if you need anymore info, thanks!

    Gaming/productivity PC

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:30 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build?

    Gaming @ 3440 X 1440 120Hz OR 1080p @ 144hz

I already have a 1080p 144Hz monitor but I'm considering upgrading to an ultrawide 3440 X 1440 monitor with at least a 100hz refresh rate

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Budget isn't firm but ~$1500 without replacing the monitor, $1500 + the cost of the monitor if I do decide to replace it. I'm really just looking for the best bang for the buck in this price point, I know that this budget already starts to get diminishing returns so I'm willing to go up on price if it is justified by the performance.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

    CPU upgrade question

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:13 PM PDT

Hi, guys! I've posted here before about upgrading my GPU and I did so perfectly. Now I would like to upgrade my RAM and CPU I'm looking at this for CPU: https://www.amazon.com/AMD-FX-9590-Desktop-Processor-FD9590FHHKWOF/dp/B00DGGW3MI but I read that it will depend unless the motherboard is compatible. I have a prebuilt computer that I've been upgrading an so far I haven't had any issues. The motherboard is: M52BC_M32BC the processor I currently have is AMD FX8310. I also wanted to add this RAM stick: CORSAIR - VENGEANCE LPX Series 16GB (2PK 8GB) 2.4GHz DDR4 Desktop Memory - BlackWould this all be compatible with my prebuilt? Thank you!
EDIT: Also, if you don't think it's compatible please give me suggestions on what I could buy; I ran into a dead end online.
