    Simple Questions - October 09, 2019

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Wednesday Welcome to the new r/buildapc moderators, and a small update!

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:16 PM PDT

    Good Morning/Noon/Afternoon/Evening everyone!

Finally, after having received a lot of applications, discussing in depth for a week since the closure of applications, we have finally decided who will join us. Do note though for those wondering, we won't be able to answer on individual applications. We reviewed quite a lot of the applications!

People of r/buildapc, please give a warm welcome the following new servants moderators:

Also we forgot to mention in case you didn't notice, for a while, two new mods came on-board few months earlier, who are also helping out in the subreddit, they being:

Yep welcome us I guess? XD shrugs

In other subreddit news, we will soon be hosting an Extra Life charity stream over on our official Twitch Channel: https://www.twitch.tv/buildapc . We will announce when exactly as soon as we finalize the details.

You can read more about Extra Life here.

Anyway, thank you to all who applied, and if you happen to come across them, feel free to laugh at their suffering say hi, and congrats in cat gif form!

New Ryzen system, crashing on start-up, even in bios

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:34 AM PDT

    The system: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bJLMp8

I have installed windows on the Nvme drive but but it took many attempts of the installer freezing before even getting to the install section. Even in the bios the system is slow and crashes often. Seemingly at random it actually boots to windows and is completely stable. Most often the Aorus logo will appear and start loading windows for a bit and then start slowing down and freezing for several seconds at a time. I would update the bios but getting into the bios is very difficult, and even if I did, it's so prone to crash that I wouldn't want to update. Most often when freezing before loading windows the error code is 62, which according to the manual is "Installation of the PCH runtime services".

Again, the stage thing is that once it does get into windows, which is rare, it is completely stable until restarted again.

Update: I have been able to get into the bios and it seems stable as I have been in it for a while. I may attempt a bios update, but the only other usb device I have is an sd to usb adapter, as longas the sd is formatted to FAT32, it should work right?

Update2: Bios successfully updated to f7b. Will boot to windows every time but logging in to windows gives a blue screen only after entering password. I have been into windows a few times successfully and used it for extended periods of time before restarting to see if the issue predicts

Do SSD's produce less heat and consume less power than traditional HDDs?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 04:33 AM PDT

I'm making a media drive for the living room, basically a 2.5 inch drive and an enclosure.

Not sure if I should use a 2.5 inch HDD or an SDD.

The write speed is irrelevant because I wouldn't be writing media into it that often, my concern is thermals since it would be plugged in on my TV like, all the time. Even when not in use I plan to leave it on idle but still plugged in, and I'm worried with a mechanical drive it would keep on spinning and generate a small amount of heat. It's an old 2.5 inch drive, maybe 7 years old now.

    Thanks for all the replies

GPU, Mobo, and M.2 PCIe compatibility question!

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 04:35 AM PDT

I built my first PC, but I'm having the strangest issues. I've got a technician looking at it and he said it's one of the weirdest things he's seen. Display disruptions, blue screens, low FPS in Windows, etc. I've been wracking my brain with possible causes. Nothing seems defective, but when it's all put together something just isn't playing nice. The Mobo has been flashed for the Ryzen 3600 to work, so I don't think that's the issue. I'm thinking that it might be because of the PCIe compatibility?

GPU is PCIe 4.0. The Mobo has a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot and the M.2 is PCIe 3.0 x 4. I've read that PCIe is backwards compatible, but is this really the case?

I found this TomsHardware article which leads me to believe that this may be the issue.

    2K 60hz or 1080p 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:41 AM PDT

I am returning my Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 Super

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:44 PM PDT

So yesterday my dream came true: 144hz gaming made possible by the RTX 2080 Super. I saved up for months, anticipating my upgrade from 1080p@60hz to 1440p@144hz for years. To be honest, the 1440p part came on to me recently, I couldn't help myself..

Moving on, the card I got from Gigabyte sounds like it's having a seizure regardless if it's under load or not. I've played with MSI Afterburner AND Aorus Engine to set dozens of custom curves and everything. But it wouldn't stop. It's either way too loud or keeps turning the fans on/off at a 2 seconds interval. I am listening to loud music through my headset as I'm typing this because the GPU sound is driving me nuts.

Just buy another model? The availability for RTX 2080 Super models simply sucks at the moment, they are either overpriced or I need to wait 5 days for delivery, I won't survive 5 days of this. So I thought to myself, do I need a 2080 Super? No, maybe a 2070 Super will suffice for my 1440p@144hz monitor (that I also got new, special for this experience). And I'll save over 200 euros with this downgrade.

This is part rant, part advice request. Does anyone happen to have hands-on experience with 2070 Super and high refresh rate gaming? If I have to, I am willing to downgrade my display to 1080p@144hz . But only if I have to, I'm fine playing 100fps on 144hz, I have never noticed stutter/tearing anyways (probably got bad eyes?). Or maybe there is a way smarter option available for me that I am totally missing, would love to hear from y'all.

Strong ozone smell coming from PC?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 06:12 AM PDT

There's a strong ozone/ electronic smell coming from my PC and is more prominent when running at load. How should I go about trying to troubleshoot the smell? Is it something to be concerned about?

It's hard to describe the smell but its the exact smell if you sniff around the exhaust of any electronics, just more strong and prominent from afar.

This smell is new and only started to happen after I upgraded my GPU to a 2080ti last week. The PSU is relatively new as well but I've had it for longer, around 4 months with no issue. The smell only started after the GPU upgrade.

I haven't had any performance issues, and the GPU runs at around 81C under load, CPU is normal.

    PCPartPicker Country options?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:24 AM PDT

I am living and Denmark and I have been researching parts for a new PC, I have been using the Germany country option for now to get accurate-ish prices for what I can get in Denmark but recently learned that many of them won't ship so the prices weren't accurate as shipping wasn't included.

They recently added Denmark as a country option but there appears to be only one single store option, CDON.dk, definitely NOT the only store in Denmark selling PC components and not the cheapest either. Is my only option to research what every single part costs + shipping? Or is it possible to add stores that part picker can choose from?

Any help would be much appreciated

EDIT: https://imgur.com/a/xLvW6b8 quick confirmation that this is in fact, the only retailer available

On an Intel CPU cooler, the arrows on the little pins, do they point in the direction of tightening or releasing?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 01:30 PM PDT

Wanted to ask, since in all my life I still have never figured out how the pins (the plastic parts that push into the holes on the motherboard) on intel coolers are really supposed to work. When inserting the pins into the mobo, should they be turned inward, then you turn them outward to release? Or vice versa?

If CPU includes a cooler, do I need to buy buy one?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 04:00 PM PDT

So, I've never built a pc and I don't know much about their components and I found that the AMD Ryzen 7 3700x (the CPU that I'm interested in) includes a cooler, I was wondering if I need / should buy another CPU cooler or if the one included should be fine.

Move just OS from old HDD to new SDD

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:36 PM PDT

Hey guys, building a new PC today. I have an old HDD currently in my old PC with games, music, media that I want to keep. I would like to just move the OS(Windows 7 pro) from my old HDD to the new SSD. I've have read a lot of posts about the topic but it seems like they are moving whole HDDs to the new SSDs, which is not what I want to do. I have an external hard drive and 128GB USB if needed. Thanks in advance!

Playing on 1440p and streaming to 1080p using one PC

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 02:02 PM PDT

    Hey,

Can I play on 1440p/144Hz and at the same time, using only one PC stream the game to 1080p/60fps?

Is the image going to be good quality, like the original 1080p? I mean, same like from 1080p to 1080p? Or it is without any sense to stream from 1440p screen to 1080p image on streaming platform?

    PC:

    Ryzen 3700X + RTX 2080 Super or 2070 Super + Internet upload speed ~15Mbps

Need to decide about screen to buy! I couldn't find an answer to this for 2 days already...

Now, I am planning to put my 1070 into my secondary PC and I've got a good offer for a Vega 56 Red Dragon. So I need another GPU.

I wanted to ask the following:

Do I have to worry about wattages with the Vega 56 Red Dragon AT PEAK POWER DRAW (255Watts apparently)?

This question should answer itself but I'll ask anyway: If it is possible, is it a reasonable idea to flash it to Vega 64 with this PSU?

    Thanks in advance.

Ridiculous CPU Temperature or Monitoring Problem

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:23 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have a new PC build with my Ryzen 5 2600 and MSIGTX 1660 Gaming X. I've had my first gaming experience with CS:GO tonight and something weird happened. My GPU usage was around 30%, fans are 900 RPM, and it's temp ~60 C. But my CPU usage was 90%, cooler fan is 2500 RPM, and CPU temp, how can I say that, it's gone crazy. I saw 100 C for a moment. I was using MSI Afterburner for monitoring. After that, i tried Ryzen Master and nothing has changed, still same.

And I have another weird problem. I don't know much about CPU voltages but I know that 1.50V is dangerous with stock cooler. Normally, my CPU voltage changes 1.15V to 1.18V, the most I've seen on idle is 1.22V but when and after play game (I only tried with CS:GO) all monitoring tools (Ryzen Master, HWmonitor, Dragon Center) says CPU voltage is 1.55V and it is not going under even if I close the game. By the way, normally my CPU is running ~40 C on idle, but like this voltage problem it is not going under 55 C after gaming.

I don't know if this means anything, on Furmark my GPU didn't go beyond 70 C and 1500 RPM. I tested my CPU with AIDA64 after this problem, I saw 85 C 2 times and usually it was 78-79 C, the voltage problem didn't happen.

Need Modem/Wifi Router Suggestion for Xfinity 175d Connection

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 04:07 PM PDT

As the title suggests, I currently have Xfinity's 150d connection. I know comcast has some bad rep but unfortunately it is the only provider in my area (Tacoma, WA) that offers above 100d. I'm currently using the gateway they provided me with (Cisco DPC3941T) but even when hardwired in I do not get near the 175d I pay for. I've done some research and have found that buying a dedicated modem and a dedicated router instead of an all in one device is the way to go. Any suggestions to maximize my connection? Would also like to add that aside from my PC being hardwired I have a PS4 in the back of the house that constantly loses connection so a powerful wifi connection would be desired, as well. Thanks!

Edit: budget wise I wanna keep the setup under $300ish and I need to cover a 1500 square foot house - all one level.

Final Review before purchasing the rest?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:56 PM PDT

Hey all! Hoping you can quickly review my build. A few things/justifications:

    1. Already purhcased a MSI 2070 Gaming Z for 480 as well as bought a Ryzen 7 3700x due to gaming and 3D modeling that I do recreationally. I think I went overkill on the PSU but a 750W PSU was only $5 more than the 650W and I figured I might as well just send it. Finally, I'm wondering on opinions on a 500GB-1TB SSD. Also think I'm going to go with the Meshify C as it's $20 off and it seems to get a lot of great responses from many people throughout the PC building communities. One last thing...the Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200 8x2 are current on sale quite a bit right now, but I was wondering if I would get significantly better performance with my ryzen cpu by getting 3600. Thanks for reading and helping out...just trying to finalize and the rest of my parts ordered for the weekend!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I've bought a 2nd hand Sapphire RX 580 8GB. When installed in my computer, I get major artifacting across the screen, as well as occasional BSOD on startup. I've tried it in a PC with a Ryzen 3, where it seems to work fine, but in yet another setup with a Ryzen 5, the card doesn't output anything.

When installing the Radeon drivers, I get an error that says I don't have the right drivers installed (it pops up when right-clicking the AMD tray icon and opening the Radeon software). Device manager shows the card as not working properly, but does detect it as a RX 580. Drivers install totally fine with an RX 480. The DisplayPort outputs don't seem to be working, so I'm using HDMI outputs. I've also tried two different monitors.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • Repeatedly attempted to install the Radeon drivers.
      • Updated to the latest version of Windows 10, as well as updated my motherboard.
      • Tried an RX 480, which works perfectly with zero issues.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

I'll try to add some photos and screenshots later, I'm out at the moment.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Why would this work in my mum's Ryzen 3 build, not at all in my brother's Ryzen 5, but then artifact in my i5? Help me /r/buildapc, you're my only hope

$350CAD plus shipping for a gtx 1070 Ti a good deal?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:36 PM PDT

I was planning on buying a new 1660 Ti from amazon for my first build but came across this used 1070 Ti for $40 cheaper on eBay? Is it generally a good idea to buy GPUs and other PC components in general used when it's possible or is it usually better to stick to new components? I'm just a noob and not sure how PC parts hold up quality wise overtime.

    Thanks for any input everyone!
