Home Networking is a seductive mistress Posted: 09 Oct 2019 10:31 AM PDT Just yesterday I upgraded my modem from the ISP's rental to a Motorolla MB8600 with the ER-X and Unifi Ap-AC Lite. Now today I'm already looking at how I can upgrade to a bigger switch, add in the Cloud Key, and mount a couple more AP's. Unhand my wallet you wench. How to secure home server? Used for hosting game servers, web server, NAS, and ESXi Posted: 09 Oct 2019 06:47 PM PDT As stated in the title, the server is running Proxmox which is running each other those services with their own VM respectively. The steps I have taken are creating a VLAN to seperate the network, and connecting the servers solely to that VLAN. I am looking to fully secure my network, as I plan on making the game servers (mostly MC) public. Router that is being using is this Here is a rough diagram of the network setup Any recommendations are welcomed, I also plan to configure Fail2Ban. Please ask any questions for anything I have failed to provide, I am new to networking. EDIT: I was looking at something called DMZ, but from my understanding it can only be used on one machine, not multiple, and it would require an extra router (which I do have, if that is useful). Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:56 PM PDT I have 75 up/down verizon with a verizon gateway router. I bought a wifi extender because I was getting packet loss and super slow speeds since I'm far from the router. I get around 50 up and down but I also still have packet loss in games. I find that it gets extremely bad in the night time. I changed the wifi channels but nothing fixed and reset the router many times as well. In games I have to use HASTE.net which stops most of the packet loss for some reason. How do I fix the packet loss so I can stop using the haste vpn? Testing roundup TP Link 245 V3, Ruckus R710, nanoHD, Orbi 50, ASUS AC86U. Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:24 PM PDT I was looking for something to upgrade my ASUS AC86U Here are the boot up times Start up time 1st - Tp 39.71 2nd - ASUS 46.11 3 - Ubi 1:45 4 - Orbi 2:05 5 - Ruckus 3:07
Most of the time the 2.4Ghz showed up about 5 seconds before the 5Ghz
Orbi 2nd floor test had full bars but because the device was connecting to the 2.4Ghz the slow speed. If I plug the satellite upstairs then I got 111 Corner = outside the house signal goes through brick wall and is about 30-35Ft Driveway = outside brick wall to the edge of the driveway about 35-40Ft Family = 1 drywall about 50 Ft Bathroom = a few drywalls and about 55-60Ft 2nd floor = a few drywalls and the floor about 50ft Watts test of course it was jumping one to three .00 decimals
The 4 SpeedTest mean I had 4 devices running SpeedTest to see if the watts moved at all and they did. The TP Link is super efficient and also have amazing signal/range. I would have kept the Orbi only if it would allow you to split the bands separately 2.4 from 5, but because they don't let you do that it sucks. The Ruckus what a big let down range and speed completely garbage. Is big and ugly feel like a tank. Online talk about ruckus amazing range no where to be found on my sample unless mine was not working good. NanoHD I expected more range and speed a let down. The unit itself feel super premium is the best looking of them all. I guess all the Ubiquiti talk had me expecting that it would have fare better come one the TP Link easily beat it up. TP Link 245 V3 Wow I'm impressed after I opened the box I was not really expecting much from it as it feel super cheap think plastic, but who cares how it feels the range and speed is amazing a keeper. Plus it boots up after a reboot or power cycle super fast under 40 seconds. This is really and underrated product. ASUS AC86U what to say I had this for like 2-3 yrs had worked great. Keeping it setup as AP. Using the Edgerouter 12 as the main router and the TP Link as the main AP. So if you want to expand your network give the TP Link a try too bad it don't let me post a pic of them all. Edit: Added tables now it should look better. I only messed around with the setting of the Unifi nanoHD channels and transmit power, I did not see any difference it his performance so I concluded that is a waste of time. All the other devices high power and channel in Auto, pretty much plug and play change the SSID and enjoy. [link] [comments]
Outdated information on Tom's Guide? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 02:41 PM PDT I've been researching routers on Tom's Guide and a few other sites. It seems like the authors on Tom's Guide are opening the articles and hitting save so that it shows the article was updated recently while the majority of the information in the article stays the same. Has anyone else noticed this? I understand the idea behind it, I am sure it helps drive traffic to the site. That being said it makes me wonder if the information in their articles is actually current. [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Oct 2019 09:16 AM PDT Right now I have the operator router in one side of the house, and, in the middle, I have a Xiaomi Router 3G with OpenWRT as access point. The coverage in general terms is nice, but just in the furthest points of the house the coverage is quite bad, so I am thinking to increase it. So, my plan is to buy a better access point, and then use the 3G Router as main router (setting the shitty company router in bridge mode) because I like the openWRT firmware to manage all. About the access point, I was thinking in the AC Lite, but after reading a bit, I found that the tp-link EAP225 has better coverage (and it is a bit cheaper). What would you do? Is there any other (and maybe cheaper) option? [link] [comments]
How do you find the manufacturer's release date of a product? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 07:12 PM PDT Primarily I am attempting to purchase a wireless WIFI adapter for a desktop PC. However, I would like to find out the secret method for determining how "old" the product is. Amazon and newegg appear to not explicitly list this. Here are the reasons I would like to know the release date of the adapter I am about to buy.
There is very much a danger that you might be purchasing a "legacy" product and you can kiss your updated drivers goodbye. You then scrape forums hoping that some kind stranger somewhere will give you the "silver bullet" that will stop your wifi adapter card from going down every 2 hours. I don't want to repeatedly buy numerous products, each one failing after the next, until I accidentally stumble on one that was released in 2018, and by proxy must have had updated drivers because the card's chipset didn't exist in 2017. It has become increasingly difficult to determine the exact age of products from Rosewill, TP-Link , Gigabyte, Netgear, and ASUS. These manufacturer's websites do not list the release dates. The best listing I have found is this one : https://wikidevi.com/wiki/List_of_802.11ac_Hardware/Wireless_Adapters This list only show this mysterious "FCC Date". I have no idea what that is, and the product lineups only have a tenuous connection to this "FCC Date". Is this the manufacturer's release date for this product? I don't know. Your thoughts? 500mbps download speed, only getting 100 Posted: 09 Oct 2019 06:56 PM PDT I have fiber from Frontier rated at 500 up 500 down, yet can only get 100 out of my router. I'm imagining something isn't configured correctly and not allowing the extra 400 to come through. I have a nt modem from frontier going into an ASUS ac3100, desktop Ethernet into router. Worked perfectly fine before, got a new printer in the office and had to redo the networks. Not sure what issue I'm running into and I'm coming to this subreddit hoping for help. Can a PoE switch be used as a regular switch (using a power outlet)? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 08:15 AM PDT I don't really need a PoE switch but I found a very cheap one online. If I bought this switch (this one: https://www.dlink.com/en/products/dgs-1100-08p-8-port-gigabit-poe-smart-managed-switch), would I be able to power it solely using a power outlet if I wanted? Like a normal switch? Very dumb question I know, but I can't seem to find an answer to it anywhere. [link] [comments]
Asus RT-AC58U best option for a router in that price range? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:59 AM PDT As the title says. I'm planning on upgrading my current setup and just thinking if that would be the best option. It seems that Asus routers are really solid. Please let me know as I need a router ASAP. Also is buying a router used a bad idea? I saw a listing for a Asus RT-N66U in the used market. [link] [comments]
Accessing D-Link Switch DES-1210-52 /without/ a password Posted: 09 Oct 2019 02:55 PM PDT This past week I got my hands on a DES-1210-52 switch from a local business that got a network upgrade and didn't need the old hardware. I'm moderately tech savvy, but am unable to figure out how the damn thing can be reset. All I want is to be able to access the internals of the switch like you would a router. I've tried to brute force my way in using http-post-form with hydra on kali linux.. over 800k /failed/ attempts later here I am. I've seen something talking about potential custom firmware preventing the switch from truly ever being reset... but i have no idea. [1] Here are a few things I have tried:
I have no true goal other than to take a peek inside the damn switch.. but it appears the the odds are never in my favor. :/ [2] https://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DES-1210-52 [2.1] Hardware version: C edit: i also forgot to mention that the switch is not on 10.90.90.90 it is on 10.0.0.245 even after reset [link] [comments]

How to get Open NAT on college dorm internet with OpenVPN + VPS setup? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT I setup a VPS with OpenVPN and have successfully connected to it from my main PC. I even set up a DMZ on the VPS's public IP so it lets all ports through on the OpenVPN online GUI. However, I'm still getting a Strict NAT on the Windows 10 Xbox Companion App and the Xbox itself when I share the VPN's connection via Ethernet. Anyone help? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 02:01 PM PDT So I just moved to an area that has fibre internet provided by bell. They gave me a Home Hub 3000 which I felt didn't do the job I wanted it to. I set up a pppoe to my tp link ac1750 and it gives me a public IP and it seems to be working fine except when I do speed tests I only get 30-50 up and down. I am paying for 500 up and down. I am kind of lost on what to do next. [link] [comments]
Trying to connect smart devices to WPA2 enterprise. Any workaround? Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:21 PM PDT My wifi uses WPA2 enterprise (i think? There's a login username and pass) but I can't connect google home or any smart devices to my wifi. Is there a way to create regular WPA2 wifi that piggybacks on the WPA2 enterprise? i.e a device that can connect to WPA2 enterprise to retrieve and send data that can act as a router to emit wifi that's a standard WPA2. Posted: 09 Oct 2019 05:20 PM PDT I have a Netgear CM600 (voice and modem, voice not used). This started from almost the beginning with the modem. Any ideas as to why? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Oct 2019 04:15 PM PDT Hey guys I have 3 ports in my router open. Port 1900 (upnp), 20005 (btx). Apparently, 1900 and 20005 don't seem to be too bad. I am on my phone so I have to remember what was said in my other post, which led me here. But 20005 is I think basically usb connection to the router (so I want to close it) and 1900 I forgot. I also apparently have 21 (ftp) open, even though I just saved my settings for having it closed (banner grabbed it with netcat, and I received a ftp result). So, do these ports have to be open ? And how do I close my ssh port while I am at it ? EDIT: Closed port 20005. Only ssh and ftp left. [link] [comments]
Directly linking two computers with 10 Gb/s Ethernet Posted: 09 Oct 2019 12:02 PM PDT I'd figure I don't need to replace my current switch with a 10 Gb/s capable one since I only need to link two computers. I would simply get a capable NIC for each computer; Aquantia AQC107 a good one? The help I need is whether Windows, in transferring files between the two computers using Windows Explorer, would know to use the 10 Gb/s link, while the computers are still connected to a switch using 1 Gb/s. See image. [link] [comments]

How to remotely access network device with no PC on network Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:30 PM PDT Not a home network but thought someone may know ..... I would like to build a relay cabinet to control irrigation equipment on my farm remotely; I'm also an electrical contractor. I would like to use an industrial grade 4G modem, and then will use internet enabled relays. I've been researching some of the modems online but I'm not fully understanding how I would remotely access them without a static IP, and without an actual PC on the network. It would just be the internet relays and a couple of IP cameras. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:24 PM PDT I have an AC68U (flashed TM-AC1900) which I'm using as a repeater, on firmware Merlin 384.13 Works well – but it only seems to work when connecting to the main router over 2.4. I'd like to get more speed by using the 5ghz. But then clients don't get an IP. And if I ethernet into the repeater, it shows "Parent AP status Disconnected" and every few minutes Connected for a couple seconds. Is this some kind of limitation/known issue? Is there a better firmware for repeater mode? [link] [comments]
Changing outside IP of ISP; would like to automate a message that sends the outside IP adress Posted: 09 Oct 2019 06:36 AM PDT Hi, My outside ip changes once a week. I have a terminal server port forwarded I connect with trough RDP. But when my outside IP changes I can't connect to it unless I look up the new outside ip with 'google: whats my ip'. Is there a way to automate this? Like sending a text or an e-mail with the outside IP? It is just for convenience but it would be nice if this is possible so I hope one of you could help me. Thanks :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Oct 2019 03:17 PM PDT So I have been able to cancel my broadband contract where I normally get 3mb down and barely 1mb up. I've now ordered a sim card for unlimited data to use as my home broadband instead. My phone (OnePlus 6) can get around 120mb down and 40 up when in my flat. Those speeds are incredible for me so I want to be able to get a router that utilizes it. I have researched the type of router I should buy (it should be cat 6, support 4g+ etc.) but I have found it to be a bit overwhelming. I have seen the recommendations on reddit for the Netgear Nighthawk M1 which looks ideal, but it's around £180 on eBay and I feel it could be overkill for what I need. Can anyone recommend a cost effective router that will allow me to get close to the speeds I see on my phone? Thanks [link] [comments]
