Reaper for music production (although more for recording ideas on the go) Dota 2. I have a dedicated gaming desktop but some light gaming capability would be a big plus
Build quality and portability is a must beyond all else. This thing will be seeing libraries, cafes, bus stops, trains and what have you day in day out.
Dell XPS 13, Huawei MateBook 13, Acer Aspire 5 and Acer Swift 3 are among the the top of the list of options I've considered so far [link] [comments] |

Need a FULL HD laptop for college and light gaming Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:10 AM PDT
$1000 CAD. Buying in Canada.
Any form factor is fine. Yes, a good battery life is preferred.
Since I'll be carrying the laptop from class to class, I would prefer if it was thin and light while still offering decent power.
Windows only.
Maximum 14 inches. Also should be a 1080p screen.
No image/video editing. Just need the laptop to run MS Office, some rocket league and football manager. Have my desktop available to run heavy games. This laptop is only to play on the go.
Rocket League, Football Manager, FIFA and PUBG LITE. Would be great if it comes with a dedicated GPU since Rocket League struggling on Intel UHD 620.
A laptop with thin bezels would be great along with a backlit keyboard, but those are optional.
My maximum budget is CAD 1000. So I don't want to spend anything beyond that. Also, can I get pointers on where I can buy the laptop from? I'm an international student who will be in Toronto for the first time. [link] [comments] |

Mid range easily repairable laptop -£500 to £650 (UK) Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:01 AM PDT Just need a laptop for working on emails, ms office and chrome on weekends away. Got a desktop I built at home that's my primary pc. My previous laptop was this hp envy 13 d008 (128gb version for £650) https://www.laptopoutlet.co.uk/hp-envy-13-d008na-13-3-full-hd-ultrabook-intel-core-i5-6200u-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd.html It was a great laptop and still is. My dad needed a laptop so I gave it to him last year. I'd like something similar but easily repairable/upgraded. I've started to repair my own OnePlus 3 phone and I'm squeezing a few extra years of use from it. I'd like to do the same with my laptop- need to be able to easily DIY repair power socket and replace battery myself. So no soldering please
Ms office- outlook, and 4 to 6 word/excel docs open at the same time Chrome Maybe some Netflix Spotify Will have adguard, VPN and wox launcher running in the background
Good build quality, easily repair yourself Finger print would be nice Ssd I've only every had Intel i5 and they've worked great for me
I was thinking about this dell latitude 3301: But never heard anyone talk about it and there's no way to try one out first. Should I be going for these business laptops or can I do with just a consumer one? Thank you all very much in advance! [link] [comments] |

Laptop with good keyboard for college Posted: 01 Sep 2019 03:42 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: £600-£1000 UK Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Normal form factor is fine battery life needs to be good enough to last a day at college. How important is weight and thinness to you? It will be in a bag mostly so it isn't too much of a concern. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Over 12 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not so fussed about gaming but I will use photoshop, some video editing, cinema 4D, and Unity. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is important, I've been spoilt by my custom mechanical keyboard :) Thanks guys/gals :) [link] [comments] |

I also like FPS so refresh rate would be fairly critical there..? * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* Reliable build quality is very important (as i travel internationally a lot). I plan to look after it and keep it as a main machine for 5+ years. Do not need optical drive, touchscreen or fingerprint reader. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* 1080P screen with good brightness is far more important than touchscreen or anything else. Will be using it for data modelling / data science inc SQL Server instance + complex Power BI data models. Thunderbolt 3 40 GB/s - again for future-proofing i.e. investing in a eGPU for 4k VR in say 3 years time.. Intel / i7 - as i will be using Power Query/PowerBI ETL intensively as well as Virtual machines etc minimum of 16GB RAM, if machine comes with 1x16GB first thing ill do is add another 16GB to make 32GB dual channel. N.B. for the big manufacturers in NZ, Dell and Lenovo have NZ online shops that ship, but HP is only though 3rd parties and I haven't been able to find many good deals this way. + maybe option for upgrading to 3 or 4 year manufacturer warranty at a reasonable price i.e. like Dell and Lenovo do. Edit: I am buying this primarily to be able to process work projects as quickly as possible as I work as an independent contractor and therefore time is money. However due to the high end CPU and RAM requirements I would like a all round computer that I can do most., if not all things with. Thus allowing me to retire my 2012 iMac and 3rd gen i5 12GB ram desktop! :) Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |

What is a good laptop for machine learning and artificial intelligence that is not very expensive? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:00 PM PDT I will soon be off to university to study computer science and artificial intelligence. We're currently looking for a laptop but the best ones are really expensive. Right now the best we've found is Lenovo Legion Y530 with i5-8300H QuadCore, 1050Ti 4GB, 8GB DDR4 and 1TB HDD. We can add 8 more GB to the RAM and add a 250GB SSD. This will cost around 1700 Bulgarian leva or around 1000USD. Will it be good enough and is there a better model for a price around the Legion's? Can you recommend a model? [link] [comments] |
(USA) Laptop for University and Gaming [$1000-$2000] Posted: 31 Aug 2019 04:43 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1000 to $2500 USD. Buying in the USA. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Decent gaming performance for most titles and the ability to last for a day of walking between classes. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Since I'll be carrying the laptop from class to class, I would prefer if it was thin and light while still offering decent power. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows all the way! * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.6" is the perfect baseline for gaming and mobility. Not too large to be bulky and difficult to carry around, but not small to the point where I squint to focus my vision. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Light AutoCAD and Fusion 360 work here and there. Games range from Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Metro Exodus, Terraria, The Witcher 3, Deus Ex Machina, Elder Scrolls Online, Shadow of War, Sekiro, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, and Cyberpunk 2077. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I am really looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077 on Medium-High Settings with a decent framerate to go with a high refresh screen. May also hook up an external monitor for more viewing area and fidelity. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Decent screen brightness and refresh rate, backlit keyboard, and an understated design. I want to be able to game on this thing in the privacy of my room but won't feel ashamed by black and red "gamer" aesthetics if I take it to class. Reliable build quality that will last through many days of going in and out of a bag. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Just looking for a reliable machine to allow me to play AAA games throughout my time at college. Don't need top of the line performance, but something that will allow me to enjoy the games I love to their potential. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a thin laptop for university and light gaming with a budget of $1000-$1350 Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:52 PM PDT I've been doing some research and have come across the likes of the ASUS GA502DU , MSI GF63 Thin and the Dell XPS 15. I live in the Middle-East so Amazon prices and retail prices may differ than those in the US. But any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to prioritise portability over gaming power but I would still like to be able to run a few games smoothly at Medium settings as well as do some light Blender rendering work. Should I wait until black Friday sale to buy a new laptop? Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:46 PM PDT I like the new Dell XPS 13 but it's out of my budge. I was hoping to get something under $600 but couldn't find it, so I was wondering that if waiting would be a good option, like a black friday sale. Would the laptop be on sale on black Friday? Will it make a huge difference? What are your thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Need Help Choosing A Laptop For Computer Science Student Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:38 PM PDT Hi! I got in the CS major at my university. I currently have a surface 3, and it is getting really slow and lagging a lot. The classes mainly teach C++, and I know that some professors use Microsoft Visual Studio. I want a Macbook Pro, and I think the aesthetics of the machine do play a big part in why I want it. I feel like it's also the "current trend". It is expensive though, and I am thinking of 13 inch, 1.4 GHz, 256 GB, and 16 GB RAM. I know that the VS also runs on Mac so it shouldn't be a problem. I can also use Xcode. I'm not sure if I need to run Boot Camp, and I've read that 256 might not be enough for Boot Camp, but I don't think that I can afford the 512 GB. I was reading other posts, and many people have said that RAM is important, and 256 GB of storage should be the minimum. I would like the 512, but I don't think I can afford the extra $200, especially since I am most likely going to buy the AppleCare+ (side note: it says that AppleCare+ is 20% off if I buy it with the Macbook at the same time, but I feel like I would want to test out the Macbook first to make sure that there is no problems, but if I do this, would I not get the discount? Have anyone dealt with this before?) I am graduating in two years, and when I get a job, I will probably get a work laptop, so I think that I won't need a Macbook with a lot of upgraded specs. Other laptops that I've been told are good is Dell XPS and Lenovo Thinkpad or a Surface Laptop/Book. I'm still thinking about all this because I've read so many posts about Macbook Pro problems, and although my current Surface 3 is slow and lagging, I've never taken it to get repaired and never had a huge issue with it. I'm worried about the costs of repair too. I've searched some cheaper refurbished/used 2015 Macbook Pro, but I'm worried about the reliability of the seller and machine. Sorry that this post is so long! School is starting soon and any advice helps! Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:34 PM PDT I am thinking of either buying a Dell XPS 9370 or 9570. With the current deals I'm looking for, the 9370 comes with an i7-8550U quad-core processor and the 9570 comes with an i5-8300H quad-core processor. They are both the same price. I am a student and will be using my laptop for coding, general use, and light gaming. I want a fast processor, but not something too overkill because this laptop will have to last me at least 5 years. I know the main difference between the 2 processors is the base 1.8 vs 2.3 GHz core speed in the i7 and i5 respectively, but will this really make that much of a difference for my desired usage, especially since they both turbo boost to 4 GHz anyways? Thanks for the input! [link] [comments] |
$700 - Need a laptop to play Paradox games on settings above low. Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:55 PM PDT I've been using a mac for quite some time now, but playing paradox games (predominately Victoria II and HOI4) is an absolute horror in late game, the speed is easily 1/5th of what it is at game start. Looking to move back to windows. Also, it would be really nice to upgrade past "low" settings. [link] [comments] |
