Looking to buy my brother a new laptop for university. Posted: 03 Sep 2019 02:10 AM PDT My younger brother is starting university soon, studying architecture technology after working in construction for several years. My wife thought it would be really nice to show our support for his career move plans by buying him a laptop he can use for all his course work.
~£1000, UK. Honestly, don't have a good idea of current laptop values, can probably go a bit higher if needed for the requirements listed below but also if the requirements can be met much cheaper that would be great too!
For use in university lectures so good battery life probably required since I'm not sure what opportunities he will have to charge during the day.
Moderate importance since carrying to/from classes but he drives and is pretty strong from several years working in construction so not too important.
Windows, from my understanding some software he will need is windows only.
Will be used for some CAD/graphics work so can't be too small, maybe 15? open to suggestions for sure.
He will be studying architecture technology so will definitely use CAD. Specifically, I know he will need to use Revit and Solidworks, quite likely 3DS Max and Adobe graphics products, and obviously MS Office suite as well.
He games a little, mostly League of Legends and Runescape, I expect anything that can handle Revit well enough shouldn't be worried about LoL.
I know he likes the idea of touch-screen but it's not essential, reliable build quality is fairly important, he has a habit of being a bit rough with his stuff!
Nothing else I can think of to add, just thanks in advance for any suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:25 PM PDT After looking at some laptops I found this laptop on sale for $999 at Walmart.com. This seems like a pretty good deal for the specs, it comes with a 1660 ti, 120hz monitor, and a 9th gen i5. It also has a very nice and sleek form factor compared to other gaming laptops. Is this a good purchase compared to other laptops at its price range? [link] [comments] |
What laptop would be good for me? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 10:08 PM PDT I need a work from home laptop, can anyone recommend a pretty solid laptop for work and normal day to day use(browsing the web, YouTube etc.)? I don't plan on gaming on it or doing anything crazy, just a standard work at home laptop. My budget is anywhere between $200 - $350. Preferably looking for a 8gb RAM. I honestly am super clueless and really technically challenged when it comes to the "specs" of a laptop. Don't hold back on the details though, I have a person to help break it down for me lol. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is my laptop choice good or should I wait a bit and then buy something? Posted: 03 Sep 2019 02:56 AM PDT It me again, I still have not settled on a laptop after two months of looking for it. I will add the form below, just so it is clear what i want the laptop for. The laptop I am thinking about buying is ASUS Vivobook S 15 S530FN-BQ075T and has everything, it seems. It is on sale for 759 now, before the sale it was about 850 so I think it is a bit of a deal breaker. What makes me hold back is the lack of reviews. Also I´m scared it will throttle the battery, or overheat as the specs are what i would call pretty high in such a slim laptop body. So hey, long story short: is it a good choice or should I keep looking for something else? FORM BELOW Total budget and country of purchase: I am willing to pay like 750 EUR, as a student I just cannot afford anything more expensive Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? 5 hours of battery life is enough, sacrifices must be made because of the performance/specs (Specs-vise, 8GB RAM, dedicated graphics (probably MX150), at least i5 gen 7 processor, SSD or combination of SSD and HDD, no pure HDD) How important is weight and thinness to you? I do not want a gaming laptop, or a thick, ugly one. I would love something with slim bezels Which OS do you require? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. From 14" up to 15,6" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming, League of Legends, AION, heavily modded Minecraft, Witcher III, I'd also love if it could run Photoshop and After Effects If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I won't mind medium graphics settings on Witcher or Aion, however I would like to run the modded Minecraft at least on 60 fps with optifine on render distance probably 15-20. I don't play with shaders Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Numpad sort of required, backlit keyboard is a huge plus. no need for a fingerprint scanner, but it would be nice. Also i do not want a cheap looking, plasticky laptop Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want to keep away from TN panels (IPS for the win), but if i have to, I *could* buy one. [link] [comments] |

PhD computer, calculations and gaming Posted: 02 Sep 2019 10:19 PM PDT I am started a PhD in physics / modeling in Canada, and my supervisor has the budget (up to 2000 CA$ / 1500 US$) to get me a computer of my election. I'd like a computer that can calculate and game. According to what I read on this subreddit, it is definitely doable. But I am a bit lost between the different options I saw. The Lenovo Legion Y740 seems well suited and is what appeal me the most now. But I saw some other options that could be as suited, like the Lenovo Legions Y540/Y545, Lenovo X1 extreme, Dell XPS 15 or MSI P65. Or even something else I did not think of maybe ? I'd like the heat to be controlled. Weight is not the main problem, but the lighter the better I suppose, and the look is not much of a problem. Any ideas/comments ? Thanks all ! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2019 11:40 AM PDT Hello, I am a designer in USA (but work internationally) . I use CAD, BIM (Revit), 3D programs (Rhino, Sketchup, 3DS), Rendering Programs (Vray, Enscape, Lumion) , GIS (QGIS Infraworks), and the Adobe Suite (primarily Photoshop, Light Room, Indesign, and Illustrator). Bare minimum 32 GB Ram. Willing to Upgrade to 64 GB for added cost. Bare minimum 6GB Graphics Card. Intel Core i9, ( 8 cores preferred) Dual hard drive, SSD for boot, HDD for storage. I was always a mac user. I use a PC at work. I would like to have both OS on this laptop. I will use this laptop for professional work. I will travel with this laptop, so it can't be heavy. I can go the mac route and buy a MBP and use bootcamp, but I am curious if someone can suggest a windows laptop. I always loved the fluidity and interface of OSX. Working on OSX is like walking around an open office. Working in Windows is like walking around a cubicle. For some reason, I could easily work on a track pad with a Mac, but never on a windows laptop. Total budget and country of purchase:** 3000 USA

Laptop for professional writer, around 350GBP, UK Posted: 03 Sep 2019 12:52 AM PDT My sister needs a cheap work laptop, she's a writer. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around 350GBP (400 is the max I can strech ), Going to buy it from the UK * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery and as good a spec possible in the budget * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight is very important. It should be below 1.5/1.6 kgs. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows, Chrome OS, Linux. If ChromeOS/Linux can get me a better laptop for cheaper, I'd prefer that. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Below 14 inches. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Only specialized program would be Dragon Individual if it is a Windows laptop * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No Gaming * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good keyboard is a priority as it will mostly be used for writing. Also needs decent build quality. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** My sister already has a Macbook but she wants something cheaper; something that can run msoffice/libreoffice fast and smooth. She's ok with refurb or clearance sale as long as they aren't too old or heavy. [link] [comments] |

AUD$2000 but less if possible, Australia.
I will be travelling each quarter for around 5 hours so as long as it has minimum 5 hours! Otherwise best specs for money.
Lightweight is best as I'll be travelling and am not that strong!
Windows
Decent size, nothing tiny
Nothing intensive, my work is primarily done in Chrome and the Office suite.
I don't intend to game on it but would like the option, likely WoW, Witcher 3, and/or Fallout 4 in case I'm bored in the hotel, but if it's not in the budget then no worries.
Quality keyboard, I will be using it for typing and coming from Logitech gaming keyboards so getting used to a laptop keyboard will be something! Good build quality for the travel (and my clumsiness). Main priority is the ability to output to dual monitors (if that's a thing!), as when I'm working from home it's going to be hooked up to my home system, and acting as a desktop pc, with my usual keyboard and mouse plugged in as well.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Deciding a laptop for college Dell XPS VS Inspiron Posted: 02 Sep 2019 12:10 PM PDT Hi, I'm trying to buy a laptop for college that'll last me all four years. I'm stuck between getting a Dell XPS 2-in-1 13 or going for an Inspiron 2-in-1 13 + an ipad pro. I'm not sure what the difference between the XPS and Inspiron are other than the Inspiron having a USB-A,. Can someone help me understand why there's such a large price difference, which storage options are best suited to me (most gaming I'll ever do is the sims and maybe league, I'm a bio major) and which would be the better option? * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA $1500 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** - 2-in-1 preferred, I want to be able to write/take notes on it, long batter life wanted- * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I'm going to be carrying it around so not more than 4 pound * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Must be Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13 * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Mechanical Engineering student looking for first laptop Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:22 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: USA $500
Best specifications preferred, battery life would be nice
Definitely not my deciding factor, but lighter would be better
Must be Windows
N/A
Wish to use AutoCAD, Lightroom, and Photoshop, as well as store around 2,000 photos and several textbooks. I'm a mechanical engineering student, who also enjoys photography so I have a few things I plan to use my laptop for. First off, I'm going to be using my school's online portal often to access homework documents and email. Next, I want to use AutoCAD to design fairly complex items to be 3D printed. I will use Photoshop and Lightroom to edit photos, but only a few at a time. I also plan on programming using Python. I would like to store about 2,000 of my photos on the laptop, along with 5 or 6 textbooks, but I was thinking that an flash drive might be a more cost effective option for that. I'll be taking it to campus every day, and walking around with it, but I already have back problems and there are chargers everywhere so honestly weight and battery life aren't much of a concern. I'm very tight on budget, so something at or under $500 would be ideal, although I'd go to $600 if neccessary. I'd be willing to go for a used laptop from Amazon or Ebay if it meets the specs and price. [link] [comments] |

I'm leaving Apple. What laptop should I get? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:00 PM PDT I've been an avid MBP user for ages, but the keyboard issues have finally broken me. I'm looking to get a laptop and would love some suggestions. I've been looking at the following laptops, although having never owned a Windows laptop in my entire adult life, I'm not quite sure what's good.
• Total budget and country of purchase: Australia, and budget-wise...I'm a disgusting Apple user so... • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I care about specs, 2-in-1 would be nice, but not entirely essential if it's at the expense of specs. Not too worried about battery life. • How important is weight and thinness to you? Ideally not super thick and heavy. 15-inch is max size. I'm like 5 feet and 90lbs so pls, not too big. • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. OS X, Windows (I mean if MBP is the best for some reason I'll rejoin the dark side?) • Do you have a preferred screen size? N/A • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe Suite (especially Photoshop), some web and app development, FFXIV • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? FFXIV, at whatever settings/FPS • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good trackpad and keyboard are very important. • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I do graphic design and digital illustration so I'd be keen on a 2-in-1, but I also have a Cintiq (which isn't the most portable thing in the world, but I can do without the touchscreen if it comes at the expense of good specs). Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Need help on choosing between these two laptops Posted: 02 Sep 2019 10:29 PM PDT Im a freshman in college and im looking for a laptop to do school shit and also play LoL. I don't really plan on playing any high end games and I dont have a problem with playing games with the lowest settings because Im used to it lol. The laptops I'm thinking about are 1st choice and 2nd choice If you guys have any other suggestions that are around these prices then I'm all ears. I don't trust the best buy reviews on these laptops so I want this subreddit's opinion because I know I can trust you guys. Ty [link] [comments] |
Looking for a gaming laptop under $1000 CAD Posted: 02 Sep 2019 06:06 PM PDT
Windows.
The Sims, GTA V, Garry's Mod and general games from Steam are ones I'd like to play. I don't have any settings I like, so as long as the graphics are good and the games run fast.
No specific requirements other than a sturdy computer.
I'll be using this for school and gaming, so it would be really nice if I was able to travel with it easily. Right now, I'm considering the Acer Nitro 5. Sorry, I don't know much about laptops, but thanks anyways! [link] [comments] |

Looking for a laptop that can be use to "draw", budget under 700 CAD Posted: 02 Sep 2019 11:02 AM PDT
700 CAD
Prefer 2 in 1, laptop that can draw on (no surface please, need desktop that can install anything)
doesn't concern.
Window mainly , MAC ok too (but most likely cant afford)
bigger then 10
Clip art studio EX, need some rendering, photo editing Most likely won't game.
Touch - screen, Pen pressure enable and good build quality (prefer screen allow drawing)
For external class, i do doodle time from time, i use a wacom cintiq mostly, i want a laptop that i can draw without "LAG" which is the most important factor. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a Windows laptop for University. Going to be doing an IT course. 13"/UK/£1250 Posted: 02 Sep 2019 09:33 PM PDT Title. I have a Macbook but reading some online forums recommend a Windows laptop for some of the software I need to run. I know nothing about Windows laptops, whats good, whats bad, I haven't used it since Windows 7 came out pretty much. Screen size - 13"-15" Ram requirements says 4GB, but I want it to last so I'll say 8GB" to be safe. Brand - not really worried, a tech friend recommended a Razer laptop? But I'm not 100% sure as I thought that was a gaming one. Budget - Ideally not above £1250, might stretch to £1500. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Looking For A Good Travel Laptop $2000 US Posted: 02 Sep 2019 09:17 PM PDT Lightweight with good battery and screen for travelling and very light games.
I do not want a 2 in 1, a good battery would be nice, but if it can charge through thunderbolt 3, then it's not a huge deal.
Lightweight is best as I'll be using this on the go in airports/hotels.
Windows/Mac
I want something 15.6" and under, that is thin.
I don't really expect to be doing anything more than something like Minecraft or Terraria, but it wouldn't hurt to have the flexibility for more demanding titles.
I'd like a good feeling keyboard, a fingerprint reader (if available), must have at least one thunderbolt 3 port, and a high resolution screen.
I had an Acer laptop that game me more issues than it was worth so I'm kind of turned off of that brand at least for now. Thank you for the help in advance. [link] [comments] |
Moving from a gaming desktop to a gaming laptop Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:58 PM PDT I am in the market for a gaming laptop. However, I game on a 60hz 1080p 24 inch monitor right now and I don't want to feel regret downgrading to a relatively smaller 17.3 inch screen (although it will most likely support higher refresh rates). Are there any laptops with beefy internals (1080/1440p gaming) but a regular display (saving on cost here) that I can use with a bigger and better external monitor? [link] [comments] |
