Installed Linux Mint, now what? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:49 AM PDT I've installed mint on an old laptop because I've read that it makes the transition from Windows to Linux easier. Being used to a Windows environment, I have a couple of questions: -How do I install updates? Is there a system similar to windows updates? -What terminal commands should I always know? -Is there an available alternative for Visual Studio Community which I can code and run C++ projects? Thanks for the support! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2019 10:50 AM PDT Hi. So right now whenever my Ubuntu machine looses power unexpectedly, power outage or something like that, it goes into this state where it doesn't know what is readable and what is writable, that's what people said last time I posted about this and that is here. I got busy with stuff so I wasn't able to reply to them then. I looked at my fstab file and I am confused. Right now when I loose power to the system I get it back up using a linux install usb and I go to try Linux and then that fixes the drives...somehow. I would like to figure this out cause I want to backup my system before I install a few other things. I have no idea what this file should look like for this so any help would be appreciated. Here is the picture of my fstab file Edit: formatting bc the new site sucks compared to the old or mobile [link] [comments] |

Hard Link (ln) and Copy (cp) difference? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 01:28 PM PDT Hello everyone. I can't really understand the difference between hard linking a file and just copying it. Since Hard Links have no indication that it is a link, uses disk space and is not affected if I change the original file, isn't it the same as just copying the file? Any reason why would I use a hard link? I mean, soft links (ln -s) sounds a lot better since it is a shortcut and it actually shows that it is a link instead of a file, and just copying seems more convenient to not get confused if it's a hard link or an original file... Thanks for the support. [link] [comments] |
Website tips for tutorials on how to use Ubuntu/Mint in GUI? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 06:58 AM PDT Website tips for tutorials on how to use Ubuntu / Mint in GUI, most are always on the terminal what I don't think it makes sense for these distros. Recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Between Arch and Ubuntu, which one has better nvidia optimus support? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:22 AM PDT As the title said, I'm looking for a distro which has good nvidia optimus support Currently I'm having a GTX 1060 in my laptop Edit 1: I've been using pop os before, but somehow I keep breaking it when installing stuff. And most of login manager other than default gdm never work properly when I switch to nvidia graphics, and ghost notifications keep showing and I can't remove them (KDE plasma desktop) Edit 2: It seems that no matter what distro I try, I keep coming back to pop os [link] [comments] |
Trying to install Zorin OS Lite to ASUS T200TA, can't boot USB Posted: 02 Sep 2019 02:03 PM PDT Hi. I've been trying relentlessly to install Zorin OS Lite since yesterday and I am encountering problems. I have disabled Secure Boot. I have put USB as option 1 for booting. I even disabled any other option to try and force the computer to boot on the USB. It keeps going back to BIOS page My laptop is an ASUS T200TA 32bits, I think it's UEFI only, from what I gathered on forums. I found that some people suggest to replace the bootloader (bootia32.efi or something like that) for Ubuntu but such a file doesn't seem to exist in the Zorin OS folders on the USB. Do you have any idea what to do? Should I switch to another distro? Is putting Linux on this damn machine even possible? PS: I'm not super proficient with computers and computer terminology. Vim LateX plugin doesn't work quite right... Posted: 02 Sep 2019 10:10 AM PDT Hi, Just getting into LateX, I installed vim-live-latex-preview plugin, using vim-plug plugin manager. As the name indicates, it's a vim plugin that allows for real time preview of LateX documents. I set vim-live-latex-preview to use mupdf as a default application for preview in the .vimrc file. I then open my .tex document, then type :LLPStartPreview in vim to enable live preview. Then, mupdf application opens with my .tex document compiled, but it doesn't change when I edit my .tex document in vim for some reason. What could be the problem here? thanks in advance for any help [link] [comments] |
Need help in installing Ubuntu Mate to dual boot with Windows 10 Posted: 02 Sep 2019 07:55 AM PDT My laptop has Windows 10 installed. It has a SSD of 256 GB and a HDD of 1 TB. I want to dual boot Ubuntu Mate alongside Windows. Can I dual boot on the same SSD? If so, how? Or do you suggest that I install Linux on the HDD? How should I go about it in that case? Posted: 02 Sep 2019 09:15 AM PDT Hello all. I would like some input on what may get me more performance out of my Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M. It seems I must use it in tandem with bumblebee with my Intel i7-4700MQ cpu or it won't work. I am currently running on the Nvidia driver with bumblebee's help. I am curious if I can get more performance out of it with Nouveau instead, as running bumblebee on top of Steam Proton to get games to run feels a bit ridiculous, and I'm not so comfortable with replacing bumblebee with a similar alternative and potentially mess up my rig. At least a clean reinstall with Manjaro with free drivers is simple. For example, as a sample benchmark. I ran a test, and I understand it's not exactly fair, but you can get the gist of why I would like to see if I can squeeze more performance out if possible: Skyrim (oldrim, low settings): Windows 10: 200+ fps Manjaro: 40 or less fps, mostly less. (oldrim, ultra settings): Windows 10: 65~ fps Manjaro: Slideshow I uncapped skyrim framerate just for this test, not for playability, as I'm aware of how Bethesda's engine works. I understand that it's practically shoving the game through two layers of software to make it run on Manjaro, but is there no better way? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Sep 2019 08:59 AM PDT I upgraded a box* from Debian 9 to 10 and I probably fat-fingered something along the way, but now my default route is through a gateway IP address that doesn't exist. I can change it, but it doesn't persist after reboot. How do I make this permanent? Edit: adding the desired gateway to /etc/network/interfaces for the chosen interface also fails to set the default route/gateway correctly. It receives an IP address from the gateway, but doesn't update the routes. * The box is an old Asus eeePC 701 netbook that I use as a pi-hole. Edit: Found it. I went into the /etc directory with the following command: This got me a list of config files containing that IP address. A few of them were false positives, but /etc/dhcpcd.conf had three different entries for the interface. I commented two of them out and rebooted, at which point everything worked. Looking at the bad info in that file, it was a configuration from a few years ago that somehow persisted. [link] [comments] |
Question regarding program installation Posted: 02 Sep 2019 04:37 AM PDT I use Waterfox. It was not available to download with the package installer so I manually installed it. The question I want to ask is how to configure it so I can start it from the terminal by just typing <waterfox>. Currently I have it saved as a script and can start it with <./waterfox>. Running Fedora 30. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Sep 2019 05:35 AM PDT Hello, I've opened a large .cong file on my Centos VM and I need to change a couple of values, is there a find option I can use once I open the file? I see I can use grep outside of opening the file. Like in Windows you can open in notepad and do a control + f to locate a word. Thanks [link] [comments] |
