What's the best way to document a home network? Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:24 PM PDT I have 4 AP's, bunch of switches and devices everywhere. I really should document the network, what's the best tool to do this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 05:40 PM PDT Hello. I set up 2 MoCA adapters (Actiontec 2.0) and enabling MoCA on my modem/router. It worked perfectly for like an hour! I was getting speeds up to 250 Mbps all the way in my bedroom. The connection just dropped out of no where, and now the MoCA light on my modem is off, and the settings say "No Link" with a node count 0. Before when it was working, the node count said 2. I also think it's important to note I enabled the MoCA setting on my modem 3 days ago before the setup, and the light was consistently lit. I'd really appreciate some help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 05:53 AM PDT I have a domain with GoDaddy and a have a ddns set up in my router that updates to match my external IP. All my subdomains point to my ddns and so they always work. But the A name record, i.e. the base domain, requires an IP and not a ddns address, so when my external IP changes I have to go in and manually change the IP. How do I work around this? Thank you! Edit: changed to Cloudflare and now it's working like a charm, thanks guys! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:39 PM PDT I am considering switching from my cable ISP to a FiOS Frontier connection and am curious about how that works. I have coax cables running through the house, but not ethernet. I understand that an ONT box can transmit data over a coax cable, but how do they then convert that to an ethernet signal that goes into my router's WAN port? I have an Archer A7 which most will know does not have a coax input. I can't imagine they'll run a cat-5e or cat-6 cable across my house (or will they?) to power my router, which needs to be on the direct opposite end of the house in proximity to where the fiber is installed (the previous owners had a Verizon FiOS connection, so there is already a ONT box installed, that's how I know where they'll run it from) The service says there's a $10 fee for "router service" and it applies to all internet packages and says it's to deal with non-Frontier equipment. Is that to provide some sort of adapter instead of renting one of their modem/router combos? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 06:27 PM PDT Using different 'wifi analyzers' shows massive amounts of congestion and latency on majority of channels. Unable to get consistent connection/streams (IPTV is real bad) from my gigabyte line over wifi on my Shield (and nearby laptop) or my computer in the bedroom. They don't ever drop the wifi signal, but changes to Connected, No Internet. Phones don't ever lose connection just slower speeds from time to time but mostly unaffected. Have purchased new upgraded router with no change, changed ISP and upgraded from 120mb to 1gb line, now using their proprietary modem/wap. Problem affected my previous cheap android box as well, Shield is a million times better but still get the intermittent connectivity throughout the Shield not just on IPTV. I am almost positive my problem comes from wifi congestion. Currently I have the 5ghz channel active but when using it have not found much of a difference other than poor signal in the bedroom. Should I try the 5ghz channel, or just deactivate it completely? My work was recycling some Cisco Power Injectors AIR-PWRINJ3 with power supplies so I got permission and brought them home. Would I benefit from using these in any way? I have 2 working WAPs that I could connect close to my Shield and in my bedroom and would disable the wifi on both. Am I better off just running ethernet from main router directly to the Shield and bedroom computer? Please excuse my ignorance, I have very little networking knowledge, for now. I appreciate everyone's feedback! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 03:57 PM PDT So I had to replace my RT-AC66U as it was repeatedly rebooting, no amount of resets / firmware flashes seemed to fix it. Went for the RT-AX88U as I quite liked my previous Asus router, but Wifi link speeds on the AX88U are basically a third of what I had on my AC66U. I've done as much Googling as I can, ax HE frame support disabled, and matched the wifi settings of my 66U over to the 88U, but nothing seems to help. Its not like its flat out not working as I can connect fine, its just horribly slow for some reason. Anyone had anything like this before? [link] [comments] |
Every Website loads slow but network speed is normal Posted: 01 Sep 2019 06:22 AM PDT So I have a weird problem. Everything I try to load loads very slow but my connection speed is nearly that what I ordered. A speedtest can be found here: https://www.speedtest.net/result/8552152855 (I ordered 50/10 in Germany). My Setup is kind of small. Just 2 Fritz!Box Routers where one is the Main AP and the other extends the wifi. If I load a website or something in an App (for example Reddit) it takes 10 to 15 Seconds until the content is loaded. This affects nearly all devices in the network, even if there Speedtest's are ok (lowest I measured on my phone was 20/10). I am using cloudflares 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 DNS Servers on all devices. Any idea where to start finding the bottleneck? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:08 PM PDT I just moved into a new rental, my bedroom/desktop is just outside of usable range for wifi (1mb down currently, 300 down if beside router) and it seems like MoCA could be the best solution for me. Just wondering if I need a full adapter on both ends, can I not put one of these on the router end and just something like this going directly into my desktop? Just looking to cut the cost down on this solution, haven't been able to find a reason why you need a full adapter on both ends. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:05 PM PDT Hey! I run a small gym and have recently decide to use a public network for the members to access in the past everyone just had access to the "private" network. Is there a way for me to only display the public network and totally turn off the private network? I tried turning it off in the "professional" tab however it also turned off the public access. I also read you can hide the SSID however I also read that isn't very secure and can still be accessed? If it's not possible is it something I should even be worried about? I do most of my banking and have sensitive client details on the laptop that's connected the the private network via Ethernet. Thanks for your time and advice! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:09 PM PDT I have a desktop that I use for gaming on the second floor and the modem and router are on the first floor. My desktop has no wireless card because I have always had a direct connection before moving into his house. Right now i am using a Netgear usb wireless connector....it works but the signal is not that great and internet speeds are a snails pace. Even web browsing can take long. Is there anyway to get a direct connection into my computer with out running a 50ft cable? [link] [comments] |
Installing fibre price average (estimate) Posted: 01 Sep 2019 07:45 PM PDT For those of you who have installed fibre I was just wondering how much you had to pay for installation, I'd need them to dig up about 40ft of gravel drive and soil (so nothing difficult) to lay the line to my house. Just wondering how much you guys would expect that to cost then I'll compare it to how much they want to charge when I give them a ring later today. Honestly I'll probably pay the cost no matter what I currently get like 20 up and down and could have 900+ if I do this so pretty much always gunna be worth it I just want to see how ripped off I'm getting [link] [comments] |
Do other cords interfere with ethernet/coax? Posted: 01 Sep 2019 01:43 PM PDT I just moved and am setting up cords and everything in my room. I'm just not sure if I need to keep space between certain cords with concern of them affecting my connection and latency, because everyone in my house is a gamer. The ethernet cable I have is cat 6a shielded, and my two roommates have cat 6 cables that doesn't specify if they're shielded and they're more flexible than my cable so I'm assuming it's not. Also the ethernet cables might end up directly next to the coax cable that plugs into my modem, power cords for my modem, router and tv, and then a surge protector which has a power cord to plug into the wall. Should I be concerned about my connection at all getting negatively affected by having so many different power cords, ethernet cables and coax cable being run by each other? My biggest worry is latency and anything else that can affect online gaming performance. [link] [comments] |
Strange Ethernet problem - Slow only on one computer Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:24 AM PDT I have Comcast 1000GB service, and their most current modem. My network has 3 wired computers and several wireless devices. Coax goes into the modem, and ethernet comes out to a switch at my computer area where all 3 computers are located. So here's the problem. 2 of the computers connected to the switch get 700+ download speeds and 40 upload. The 3rd computer gets about 200 down and 40 up. All 3 computers are newer Dell computers using integrated Realtek networking with the latest drivers and running Windows 10. Switching cables between the problem computer and one of the others changes nothing (same problem). Swapping cable out no change (so changing ports on the switch or changing cables has no effect). I assumed that at this point it was a software issue. I updated the driver from the Realtek website. No change. I went into GRPEDIT and changed the QOS settings (following at guide) - no change. I went into the adapter settings and followed several configuration guides, rebooting in between each. No change. I'm not sure where to go to from here. Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing just one of my computers to have slower download speeds? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Home LTE 4g router. Europe. Any price Posted: 01 Sep 2019 12:36 PM PDT Hi, I searched through this sub and found few good recommendations but most routers I couldn't find in Europe. I currently have Poynting unidirectional antenna and Lithuanian Teltonika dual sim router, router often disconnects and has very poor ui, would love an upgrade. Needs to have wan for adsl backup, dual sim preferayand good OS (OpenWRT if possible or custom one), It should be able to have female SMA connectors for my antenna (otherwise suggest a better antenna?) price range is not too important but preferably below 500€ Update: If there's a good guide on DIY router I'm up for it also Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
High packet loss at sub second ping interval on Archer c5 v2 Posted: 01 Sep 2019 10:48 AM PDT So basically I've noticed recently that I've been getting some weird elastic banding and lag spikes when playing some online games like Apex or CS:GO and decided to run pingplotter. This is happening on a wired connection by the way. It looks like I'm getting 40-80% packet loss on the first hop, would this mean my router is having issues? The PL doesn't happen when I plug directly into the modem/router provided by my ISP so I think it's the Router. If so, does anyone have any experience with the Archer c5 v2 having this kind of PL? Or am I just sending packets too frequently? Here is the pingplotter details. https://i.imgur.com/Aw2wWQW.png [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Sep 2019 05:30 PM PDT Don't really know much about networking so was hoping for some help. The new plan is 400Mbps, and my current modem only supports up to 250. I'm currently looking at the Netgear CM700 and Motorola MB7621. Any opinions on the two or other recommendations would be highly appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Fiber connected edge switches or long PoE runs? Posted: 01 Sep 2019 05:06 PM PDT I'm planning a new network and I've been tossing up between long-ish Cat6a runs for everything (all under 100m) connecting to my main rack with a big PoE switch, or having smaller PoE switches at the edge of my network that connect to my main rack via fiber, with shorter PoE Cat6a runs to the APs and cameras near them. So essentially: Configuration 1: PoE Switch - > ~20 APs/Cameras Configuration 2: Rack Switch - > A few smaller distributed PoE switches - > 2-4 devices per switch. My primary concerns are, with 1, a single lightning strike on one camera could potentially destroy my entire setup, including servers in my rack, whereas if I connect to PoE switches in 2 via fiber, I'll only lose devices on that switch. And that's with surge protectors installed too. I've heard direct strikes dgaf about surge protection and break whatever they feel like breaking. However, I feel like its weird to have the network distributed throughout the house like it would be in config 2. But with the fiber runs I'd at least be ready for upgrades and not have to worry about running new cables when I change configuration. Also, for the sake of this example, assume money is not an issue. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:34 PM PDT I am looking to get into system admin like job in the near future and I would like to learn and practice administering a server at home. I know a decent amount of command line, and I have set up fedora 30 server in a VM on my desktop. I can now log into the server via ssh on my laptop, but what kinds of things should be learning/practicing? I prob need to set up users/permissions, but also there is no data on the server and I don't really know how to put data there. I can usually find the material once I know what I should be looking for. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Which EDCA Parameters are best for gaming (LOL) Posted: 01 Sep 2019 03:35 PM PDT Running ARRIS SBG6580 I'm renting a room and trying to get my performance at a reasonable rate. Router with support for multiple uplinks or LTE failover Posted: 01 Sep 2019 03:32 PM PDT I'm looking for a router for my home which can support multiple uplinks or has a build-in LTE modem. My thought process is that the router would automatically fail over to the LTE modem if the primary uplink is down. Anybody has any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
