Converting my Cat5e phone system to RJ45 for computer networking?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:06 PM PDT

We moved into our house 4 years ago and I largely ignored the big white cabinet in the closet until recently, when I discovered it's where the cable and phone wiring all interconnects.

From there I moved my cable modem into that space and put the wireless router on the wall nearby. Both were previously on top of my downstairs office bookshelf; this is now roughly 10' higher up in the exact same spot in the house. Wireless range was nicely improved just from that.

Next I'm eyeballing the Cat5e wiring that is in there, connected to this telephone distribution box:

    https://imgur.com/EZOOk7z

We don't have a home phone line, so these are all unused. My thought is to put jacks on the ends and plugs on the other sides, connect them to a switch (I've picked up a Netgear GS108 gigabit switch), and then hardwire the two smart TVs in the house.

But I'm also wondering if there's any use to keeping the phone box available and wired up. Maybe if we sell the house, for new owners? Would it make sense to make short jumper wires from what's plugged in here so someone could simply unplug from a switch and quickly plug into the phone box and have phone capability again?

Any other ideas or tricks I should be thinking about? I assume I should do a 568-B wiring pattern for the plugs, right?

How does this internet plan sound?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:08 PM PDT

It is the Extreme Package from Xfinity: https://www.cabletv.com/xfinity/internet#package-cards

1.) Download speeds up to: 250 Mbps

2.) Upload speeds up to: 5 Mbps

    3.) Price: $60/month for a contract of a year

4.) Data Cap is 1,000 Gigabytes a month (that seems to be more than enough)

QUESTION: when it says "speeds up to..." is that a risky phrase or am I guaranteed that the connection will be fine?

    Things to take into consideration

1.) We live in a Apartment no more than 900 sq. feet.

2.) Have 2 Xbox constantly running games YouTube and Netflix

3.) Have 2 gaming PCs constantly running games YouTube and Netflix

4.) A couple phones on YouTube often

    5.) Maybe a TV on Netflix/YouTube

Sometimes all of this is going on at the same time.

What happens when I forward all my modem ports to my router?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:42 PM PDT

For some reason, the modem (ONU actually) provided by my ISP responds to all closed ports by rejecting them (i.e. acknowledging port exists but closed) instead of blocking them (i.e. silently dropping packets). I'd prefer for all of them to be blocked which is the default on my own router, but setting my ONU to Bridge Mode is locked out by my ISP. Would it make any sense if I forward all the ports to my router as a workaround so that my router will respond instead of the ONU?

Here's a sample port scan on my IP from https://www.grc.com/shieldsup. As you can see, nearly all ports reject the response instead of dropping them, with the exception of one port (the green one) and 443 (the red one, currently forwarded and open on my router).

    10G routers

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:27 PM PDT

What options are out there for consumer 10G connections?

Before anyone asks - yes the Fibre to the home connection is 10Gbps.

But most routers/modems seem to max out at 1Gbps, found a couple rated at 2.5Gbps - but where are the 10Gbps models?

    5GHz Upload Speed issue

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:25 AM PDT

Hey guys! I've recently been having a rather odd issue with 5GHz WiFi in my house. For starters, here are all the devices involved:

    • ASUS RT-AC86U - Main router broadcasting 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Running Merlin's latest firmware
    • ASUS RT-AC66U - Currently just acting as a 4-port switch and broadcasting its own 2.4 and 5GHz on the other side of the house. Also on Merlin.
    • OnePlus 6T - My phone, where I first noticed the issue
    • Alienware 13R3 - Laptop with an Intel 8265 wireless card, recently upgraded to a 9260
    • Surface Pro 4 - The only device that works without issue

Now, for the actual problem: Upload speed on the 5GHz network from the AC86U is non-existent. Literally 0.00Mbps when I run a speed test. I first noticed this on my phone a few months ago, right after I bought the 86U. My phone had also recently gotten an update, and I figured that just broke something and I'd wait it out. Sure enough, the problem seemed to have solved itself for quite some time- Either when my phone got another update or when a installed a new Merlin release.

This brings us to about two nights ago, when I replaced my laptop's 8265 with a 9260 (rather pointlessly, as my goal was to establish a 1.73Gbps connection which I later learned the 86U can't do, but that's another story). Installed the card and booted up to see that I only get 1 bar of signal on 5GHz, sitting about 10 feet from the 86U. I verified that my antennas were indeed still connected, but the issue persisted. This is where a speed test revealed that my laptop now has the 0 up speed issue (and the issue returned on my phone). Thinking the 9260 was faulty, I reinstalled the 8265. Windows now shows full bars, but I still have no up speed! 2.4GHz works fine, and both my phone and laptop (with either card) report good speeds on both bands connecting to the AC66U. I chalk it up as a problem with the 86U, and perhaps a new firmware will fix it someday. I was growing tired of fighting with it.

The last piece of the puzzle (so far) throws a wrench in the gears, however. I'm laying in bed using my Surface Pro 4 last night, and 5GHz from the 86U works flawlessly! I quickly grab my phone to see if everything had fixed itself, and sure enough still 0 up from there...

What the hell is going on here? All my client devices have functional 5GHz radios, as proved by my trusty AC66U and the AC86U is clearly capable of getting good upload bandwidth as proved by my Surface.

EDIT: I threw a few more devices into the mix-

    • Old laptop w/ Intel 7260 - Works fine
    • Desktop PC with some built in Broadcom chip - Works fine
    • Work iPhone 6 - Has issues

Thinking now how I rarely use my Surface, it seems as though devices that the router "knows" have issues, but these rarely used devices that it hasn't seen in months, if ever, work fine. Is there any way to have the router "forget" clients without doing a factory reset?

Is there something similar to a github 'awesome' list of content caching services?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:06 PM PDT

A list of a lot of (lan) content caching stuff basically for various applications etc.

And an extra weird question in case anyone knows because I'm curious: is there any 'dynamic/adaptive' QoS bandwidth limiter?

This is so that e.g. in a multi person house, users/clients aren't necessarily capped to a fixed speed - if there aren't as many people in the house/active clients, the other active clients get more bandwidth.

I don’t know if you can help me, but I need to rant.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:21 PM PDT

I need some advice on what I can do to improve my terribly inconsistent latency/ping from my modem. Now first things first, I have a provider called Consolidated Communications, it's the ONLY available provider in my area. They run off DSL modems and it's impossible to find a DSL modems now days. My connection speed is 25mb download and 3mb upload (Trash). I play a lot of video games and as you know PING is incredibly valuable. From Rocket League (trash servers), PUBG, Oldschool RuneScape, and sometimes Call of Duty (not really anymore cuz BO4 is dead) I mainly play OSRS and use discord at the same time. My ping on runescape often does a spike cycle, it will gradually climb from 80ms ping all the way to 1300ms and then drop back down to 80ms and repeat. It's in like 30 second intervals, so it really just feels laggy all the time. I have noticed Discord has been acting up too.. I'll call my friend, and get "RTC connecting // No route" and I never used to have this issue until recently when we upgraded speeds.

Now I've tried everything to fix this problem.. got a NEW modem from the internet provider, I upgraded to a Cat6 Ethernet cable, I disabled windows throttling, we even went as far to set up a new router system so that other devices wouldn't interfere (makes no sense now that I type it because it's all bottle necked through one modem) I have legit done all that I can to improve my ping, and it's so demotivating. I just want to relax and kill some stuff on runescape but I can't lmao. ANYWAYS, if you guys know anything I can do to solve my issues, let me know in the comments.. and if there's anything that I can read to improve my knowledge about how the heck networking works, I would love that too.. if there's any spelling issues, it's because I'm on my phone sitting outside the gym. About to toss some weights because I'm so mad lol.. okay, Rant over.

what wireless router should I buy?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:38 PM PDT

    Things to consider

1.) My family live in a Apartment no more than 900 sq. feet

2.) we have 2 Xbox constantly running games YouTube and Netflix

3.) we have 2 gaming PCs constantly running games YouTube and Netflix (These two will most likely be a wired connection)

4.) A couple phones and they on YouTube often

5.) Maybe one TV on Netflix/YouTube

Most of the time all of this is going on at the same time.

If the router is under $100 then that is ideal, but the budget can stretch a little :)

    A cheap router solution for a 100 up/down network?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:10 AM PDT

    Hello,

Currently I'm renting a router from my ISP but I've been looking to get my own to avoid router rent cost to save in the long run.

What router would you recommend for a 100 up/down connection with possiblity of upgrading to a gigabit in the future.

My budget is around 30-40 euros or I guess 50USD.

I'm tired of paying this rental fee for a router and would appreciate a suggestion!

    Thanks!

    EDIT:

    Wifi Speeds with Netgear AX8

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:15 PM PDT

So I just recently got gigabit at my place and the wired speeds are great and hit around what is advertised. I have noticed with wifi though the speed drops severely, even when I'm pretty close to the router. The best I have managed is with my desktop which is 5 feet from the router and I get roughly 200mbps down. Generally it's maybe around 100mbps on other devices. I am testing specifically with 5ghz as the speeds should be faster. I have tried a few things to help with this:

    • Disabling AX on the router
    • Moving the 5ghz network to a less congested channel (Currently the only one within range on my channel)
    • Updating the wifi drivers on my machine

I don't expect to get the full gig on wifi as that's not real life, but I would think I should be able to hit 400-500mbps in the same room with a solid router. Any suggestions or anything I may be missing here?

using a WDS router to distribute incoming WiFi to a LAN cable

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 08:14 PM PDT

    Hi ,

So I have a tp link c2300 as my main router a D-Link repeater on the 1st floor and a tp link archer c9 setup as my WDS. I am wondering if I can run a LAN cable from my c9 to my desktop?

Long story short where my modem and router live is on the other side of the house on the 2nd floor and theres no good way to run a long LAN cable to my desktop. I have a D-Link wireless repeater on my first floor of the house to receive my 5ghz signal I am broadcasting from my c2300 and distribute it to my devices via LAN cable, works beautifully.

I am trying to do the same thing with my c9 have it receive the 5ghz signal from my c2300 and distribute it to my desktop via LAN cable. I just want to make sure I am going about this correctly? my WDS status on my C9 is currently Run. Any input is greatly appreciated thanks!

also side note I am running Linux Ubuntu on my desktop

    First home network DIY

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:44 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/gallery/0qp5ayl

We recently moved into our first home back in August and while it met all our home needs there was no existing ethernet being an older home.

I decided that our front bed room closet would work well as a network hub given its location and easy access to the top plates for drilling. I also knew I needed power and fortunately there's an outlet outside this closet that I would eventually splice into for a new outlet.

I ended up pulling 5 drops of solid copper riser rated CAT6 throughout the house - living room, master, game room, bed room 1, and bedroom 2. For the coax I tapped off an existing splitter and dropped into the network closet.

I still have some work to do cleaning up the closet and making it more presentable but other house work has taken my time. In the future I may rip out the wall plate and go with a patch panel but it just seems like overkill for my needs.

My network architecture is pretty straight forward -

    Modem -> ER-X -> drops

I have an unmanaged switch in the game room and the living room has a AirPort Extreme in bridge mode acting as our WiFi access point.

Overall really fun project and wasn't too difficult except working in a Texas attic in the summer.

    Google Fiber Signal Strength Issue

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 07:43 PM PDT

    Hello all!

I hope some fellow PC-phile can help me with this issue. I currently have Google Fiber, but my PC is in the basement of a split level house and my Google Modem is on the main level. While my computer is only 50ish feet from the modem, the signal does have to go down and through drywall and concrete to get to my PC.

My speeds aren't horrible (I get about 75 MBPS down and 225 up), and my PC wireless adapter is a few years old but everything I've read claims it should get up to 500 mbps. The problem is if I'm paying for 1 GBPS I want the most I can get for my money on my PC. My question is would something like this help:

    https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-Wireless-Gigabit-Extender-DAP-1650/dp/B00JFOP688

Google was unable to help confirm or deny if it would help other than that it would only work if I could disable this thing's DHCP settings? I'm not that great with networks, and this is the only device I need assistance on. Everything else is on the same level or close and connects beautifully. I am interested in using that D-link device as an access point and setting it up in my basement then plugging an ethernet cord from it into my PC.

Thoughts and help would be appreciated!

Moved to rural home with no cable internet. 4g hot spot help!

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 06:45 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have a few issues I'm hoping to solve with some help or suggestions. I moved to a rural home where my only option is AT&T 1.5mbps dsl (which locals say you will only achieve half of that speed). Next best bet would be internet over a cellular network. The closest cell tower (verizon) is 1.75 miles away. Here is the issue:

0-1 bar of 4g inside of the house. -117db.

    1-2 bars of 4g outside, -107db.

Outdoor speed tests give me between 5mbps-8mbps down, and .25 up. So right off the bat I figure I need a cell booster. I've read good reviews of the weboost 4g booster, which I could position on my roof and easily run inside my house. Hoping this gives me a solid 10mbps down and 1-2mbps up, would it be possible to now use a verizon hotspot which would utilize these speeds and feed them through a wireless router to the rest of my house?

    Home network on unmanaged switches, help find out a gateway ip stealer;

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:41 PM PDT

Hello, first of all, happy cakeday /r/HomeNetworking !

Backstory: I'm a network enthusiast, I know more than the average-non-technical-person but way less than an professional, so apologies in advance for any mistakes/newbie stuff.I volunteered to try and fix the mess of internet that the apartment building I am currently have.

I was tired of waiting from friday night until monday for the internet to be working again, so I did a bit of social engineering and got access to the network boxes and the "internet room". "If you want things done properly , do it yourself", sigh.

Network configuration: From what I gathered, our fibre internet comes to a Mitrastar GPT-2541GNAC-N1(192.168.15.1), then it is linked to a tplink Archer C2 AC750(192.168.100.1) through the WAN port, and then it's distributed to 4 unmanaged switches(tplink TL-SG1016D) in each LAN. Then each port is linked to an apartment, and they have their own equipment there.

Old problems with Rogue DHCP: The issue is that the previous person who set up this system did an "everyone's connected to the same subnet" (both PC and switch are connected to LAN, with DHCP turned off) instead of putting the switch's port to the WAN and they put their devices on LAN.

So as you can imagine, when a equipment is factory reset due to people not knowing well or not explaining properly to others(or just plain obliviousness as they can connect anything anywhere), DHCP server's are turned back on, making a big mess, giving different subnets on the same network connection.

    I kind of managed this and was able to locate most routers which had that problem, but it still happens from time to time; but I had to find the switch that was giving out IP addresses, and then try each port of it to find the rogue DHCP server;

There's also only one guy who appears randomly with the same ip address as the gateway(Archer C2), and takes the entire network to himself for like 10 seconds or so, then disappears(A D-Link DIR-611). Am pretty sure this is being done maliciously, but I could be mistaken(they have a 2016 firmware, and I dunno, might be when they reset the router, it takes the gateway ip's for a while before setting themselves up)

    We run on a low budget, and I'm not sure I can convince people to get managed switches, and even considered making unmanaged, "managed" ;

    I have no idea how to find that rogue guy; he stays up for 5/10 seconds then disappears, but that makes people who're gaming(like me), disconnect;

1)I thought of putting an dd-wrt or open-wrt on the main router(Archer C2) and fiddling with configurations so each switch is "isolated"(vlan?), perhaps even changing the gateway(Archer) IP's to something different than the ip the rogue is using; and check logs; I know very little of those firmwares, but is this idea possible/would be another way of doing this?

2)Also, how does the network knows that the internet is available on the 192.168.100.1(Archer gateway)? if I change the gateway to something else, like 192.168.100.202, how they will find that the internet is now at that address? I think it's through DHCP, but if I change that, it might take a while for everyone to connect to the right ip for internet, right? As they will still be on lease? Maybe powering off and on the switches that would solve it?

2a)Also, maybe just changing the gateway ip address to that would solve everything without me needing to change the firmware?(I know that they can also find out the ip´easily, but I can keep just rotating the ip every time this happens until they get tired(they might be stubborn, but so am I)

    Thanks for any insight/info and sorry for the text mess/multiple questions/bible text, I'm a not very good explainer/writer/teacher/english speaker/(might have relation to my asperger's but idk); I also am not sure how spoilers are helping/getting in the way as well, sorry as well for that;

How much bandwidth do I need? (Help)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 02:26 PM PDT

I know nothing about related to internet, other than you want a good connection.

I'm in charge of picking a ISP, and a plan so I need to know what I need.

So correct me if I shouldn't be looking at bandwidth or fill me in on other factors I should be looking at.

Okay so, my apartment is 800 sq. Feet. It is my mother, brother, sister, my gf and I. That is 2 Ps4s, 2 gaming PCs (would probably be wired) a couple of phones and maybe a tv or two connected to the signal. Constantly downloading/streaming Netflix, etc.

Taking all of this into consideration. How much bandwidth, etc. do I need?

On a Greenwave (Feontier Quantum Router) G1100 I’m getting 1000 mbps full-duplex when directly connected to the router but 100 mbps full-duplex when connected to a gigabit switch. Any advice?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 05:32 PM PDT

Is there anyway to force 1000 full-duplex when it's connected to a switch? I've tried it in both a Trendnet TEG-S81G and a Netgear GS308 and get the same result.

When I check in the router settings under the Ethernet section it shows this when connected directly to the router. It's connected at port 2 and the 1000 changes to 100 when plugged into a gigabit switch.

Edit: realized the typo in the title, it's "Frontier"

Bypass captive portal but not internal network

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 05:12 PM PDT

I'm very rusty with networking so please bear with me.

I am using a GL.iNet GL-MT300N-V2 Mini Travel Router running the original, OpenWRT firmware. I am trying to bypass a captive portal on the upstream network (which also has network resources such as an Active Directory Domain, ERP tools, intranet, etc.). I modified the DNS from a class bravo private IP on the upstream network (172.X.X.X) to Google's public DNS servers (8.8.8.8), bypassing the captive portal and allowing devices to connect to the internet immediately upon joining the network. However, I can no longer access internal network resources tied to the internal network's local DNS servers (172.X.X.X.X). It detects no A or AAAA records and can't load web pages or ping/nslookup to the servers they are running on. Is there a way to use Google nameservers for initial lookup and internal network nameservers for secondary lookup? I tried putting the primary internal network DNS as the second option for DNS lookups on the router while retaining 8.8.8.8 (Google) as the primary option, but that did not work.

TP-link C3200 drops internet connection after every Gears 5 game

I've played 5 gears 5 matches and after every game I get kicked out of the lobby and lose internet connection. Restarting the modem doesn't fix it, but restarting the wireless router does, I've updated the firmware, restored to factory settings, manually configured DNS, still have the issue. Any thoughts on how to fix? Or is there a custom firmware I can install on it? dd-wrt seems to be a WIP on it and I don't see a download link. Any suggestions would be awesome thanks in advanced

New Lennar Everthing Included (tm) home. Best router for gig speeds and safety for IoT devices?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:09 PM PDT

    Hello fellow redditors!

My family is moving into a new home within a month or so, and I am looking for a new router solution for the home. With the house, we are given a few IoT devices (smart locks, thermostats, etc.), two Ruckus 510 AP's, and a Ruckus icx 7150-c12p.

Security is a big concern for myself and my family, so I want to have a good router with a decent firewall and good QoS because of multiple data streams (netflix, gaming, vpns to work servers) happen at once during the day.

I have seen a video posted about someone's Lennar home, and they have the Edgerouter 4, which looks like a good solution. He was able to separate all of the smart home devices onto a separate vlan, which sounds good security wise.

Is there any other possible solution that may be a better value that I am not seeing?

[Help] Found bundle of Ethernet cables in basement

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:28 PM PDT

So I just moved to a house and was about to install mesh routers because we had dead spots around the house (5500sqft) but I discovered a bundle of Ethernet cables in the basement, with labels.

What's the ideal way to utilize these cables, as I've always just connected a router/modem to an available port in the house. Having these cables, is there a better way to get WiFi around the house then using mesh systems?

Issue with Port Forwarding and accessing security cameras

    Posted: 30 Sep 2019 04:08 PM PDT

Long story short, have a Lorex security system. Lorex is revamping how you access the cameras remotely. Before you scan the QR code (Device ID) and that was it. Well for the system I have, that is going away. Now they want you to use Dynamic DNS and Port Forwarding to do it. The old way of doing is, no longer works.

Unfortunately with my ISP (one of those wireless rural ones), I am stuck in a Double NAT condition. I can Port Forward all I want on my router, but unless they do something with theirs, it won't work. As far as I know anyway. And they claim they are not blocking anything and two techs said they don't know what Double NAT is.

I guess my question is, how was I able to access the cameras remotely before using just the Device ID? Surely a Port would have had to have been forwarded. In which case why doesn't it work when I do so manually? I tried putting the NVR in the DMZ and still no go.

    Hopefully someone can help!
