Windows 10, Screen automatically dims when opening a gaming application

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:37 PM PDT

I tried changing my power plan and going to "advanced" features and dropping down display, but all it shows is "Turn display off after.." it's not giving me automatic dimming options like how it should!

Users that are dual booting Windows and Hackintosh, how's your experience?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:57 PM PDT

I have the 2019 Samsung Notebook 9 Pro with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage and I'm considering dual booting Windows and Hackintosh. I haven't even gotten as far as getting Hackintosh on it at all and trying to figure out how to do it, but how's your experience? I just wanna have macOS on the side. I never tried Final Cut Pro X, I love the UI (even though Windows has caught up in update 1903), and it's more consistent and streamlined in some areas as we all know.

    Show Tray Under Cursor

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 07:10 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'd like the 'Show Hidden Icons' tray to appear under the cursor when I press a hotkey, like Win+1. Do you know of a way to do this (I use AutoHotkey and am aware of Win+B) or of any other QoL improvements related to the tray?

    Thanks!

How do I get my fonts to work in Microsoft Office?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 06:40 AM PDT

I have downloaded some fonts from the websites DaFont and Fontsquirrel. They show up in the font selection drop-down menu in Word and Powerpoint, but when I type, the text appears as Arial. What do I do?

Edit: I should say that I have already tried restarting my computer.

Why are web results mandatory when searching with the latest version of Windows 10?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 02:33 AM PDT

Seriously, what the hell? There's no option to even disable it. I don't want irrelevant random Bing suggestions to pop up when I'm searching for things ON MY COMPUTER.

Fix Drive that won't boot, but is not corrupt

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:06 PM PDT

I was recently moving around some partitions on my drives, and somehow managed to make my C drive unbootable, no motherboard will want to boot from it.

I thought that I must have accidentally deleted the C partition, and so I connected it to another PC to check. It showed up, and all the files were there, nothing was gone.

But the question still remains, why won't it boot? I would greatly appreciate any help in this matter.

TLDR: Drive won't boot, but all files are still there. Why?

Is there a software to visualize your key binds?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:45 AM PDT

Right now I got to many key binds in a game and I want to display them on my second monitor.

There should be some kind of a keyboard and where you can set names/descriptions for a key (multiple keys) and if you press alt, shift or strg then it would show the affected key binds with name and description.

Is there some kind of software which can handle this?

Windows 10 will not boot, boots into "Preparing Automatic Repair"

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 08:36 AM PDT

I just did an update in Windows 10 and I was able to boot back into Windows but since I shut my computer down I cannot boot back into Windows and instead it will boot into "Preparing Automatic Repair". In the automatic repair I did try rolling back the update and even reset my PC but it will not work and I get an error not allowing me to roll back the update.

I did encrypt my Windows installation using VeraCrypt but it has been encrypted for a month and I had no issues until now. I did check the boot load order in the BIOS and the VeraCrypt boot loader is above the Windows boot loader.

My Windows 10 installation is installed in UEFI mode.

Why do 64-bit Windows (even Windows 10) still include some 16-bit DLLs? What purpose do they serve considering that none of 16-bit DLLs is natively usable in any 64-bit Windows?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 03:49 AM PDT

For example, the files are found in the SysWOW64 folder: compobj.dll, ole2.dll, ole2disp.dll, ole2nls.dll, storage.dll, and typelib.dll. They're actually copies of wowexec.exe from 32-bit Windows.

Also, in 64-bit Windows 7, there are twain.dll and twunk_16.exe which are 16-bit modules. Along with twunk_32.exe which is also a 32-bit module, they're used by twain_32.dll for communication between 32-bit and 16-bit modules and vice versa. In newer Windows versions, all except twain_32.dll are gone, but twain_32.dll still has references to those other files. Why?

FYI, all of the 16-bit files I've mentioned were not installed by third party software. They're included when installing Windows.

Comprehensive (forensic) disk image mounting solution for Windows

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 04:14 AM PDT

    Good morning,

I've just released a new episode in the Introduction to Windows Forensics series entitled "Introduction to Arsenal Image Mounter." As is probably obvious by the title, this episode covers a powerful image mounting tool called Arsenal Image Mounter (AIM). AIM is unlike any other image mounting software you've used before because it mounts the contents of disk images as complete disks in Windows. It includes a virtual SCSI adapter which allows users to benefit from disk-specific features in Windows like integration with Disk Manager, access to Volume Shadow Copies, and more. And, perhaps the most impressive feature is AIM's ability to launch Hyper-V virtual machines directly from disk images!

We'll start with a basic overview of the tool, and then we'll look at new and/or improved features now available in the newly released AIM version 3. Next, we'll transition to a demo in which we practice mounting images and Volume Shadow Copies with the various options available to us. Lastly, we'll wrap-up the episode with a second demo that shows the powerful virtual machine launching capability built into AIM.

Switch over to Mac, or stick with Windows?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:57 PM PDT

Currently I'm facing a huge dilemma. For context, I produce music electronically.

I have an old Dell Inspiron laptop 2013 model which I currently make music on, it's beat up as hell but it's what I'm most comfortable with.

However, I also have a 2012 MacBook Pro. Only issue with that is it has 4GB of ram, and an HDD, which makes the music production process an absolute nightmare.

So, what should I do? Should I save up some money to buy a new laptop (basically, stick to Windows) or scrounge up a couple hundred to upgrade my MacBook and switch to that for significantly less cost.

Overall, the main thing I'm losing if I switch to Mac is a lot of plugins I won't be able to carry over or replace

    So what's the right move?

Can't delete/change permissions/use disk cleanup drive on old windows file (secondary drive)

Can't delete/change permissions/use disk cleanup drive on old windows file (secondary drive)

Alright guys I'm losin' it slowly here I've been trying for hours trying to get this file deleted off my secondary drive cause it's taking up a good 15 gigs and that's precious for the amount of steam games I have. I've tried disk cleanup, won't show up, I've tried disabling inheritance (some went through but some wouldn't allow me to), and I've also tried multiple programs but to no avail, if anybody has another solution I would GREATLY appreciate it. Permissions are greyed out and again disk cleanup won't even see the file. I've done everything short of format the drive ( really don't want to lose the games I have, have a terrible interwebz connection and takes a long time to get everything back). I do want to say it was my old laptops ssd that I just ended up using cause the laptop broke.

Won't show at all on Disk cleanup

Can't delete the file and can't change permissions

    Monitor Dimming Programs?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:45 AM PDT

Searchbar not working (1903 Windows 10 update)

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:19 AM PDT

Searchbar not working (1903 Windows 10 update)

4 days ago i installed update 1903. After installing the update i ended up in a login loop which took me 1 hour to get out off. Then i found that my search bar wasn't working AT ALL.

I contacted a microsoft support agent today who didn't know what it was either and just let me reinstall Windows which didn't work in the end.

I really wanted to fix this so i went looking on the web again and found this website

    https://windows101tricks.com/start-menu-search-not-working/

It tells me to run this command in Powershell:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}

I did this and ended up with a whole mess of red lines

    Picture 1

I don't know what to do with this at all, i am running Powershell as administrator.

When i run problem solver for searching and indexing i get this:

Picture 2: The error translates to: Incorrect permissions for Windows-Search folders...

I've tried excluding all possible factors by deinstalling Avast Antivirus, running sfc /scannow multiple times, creating new accounts with no succes.

Help will be VERY much appreciated...

Will deleting a random windows file cause lag?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 11:07 AM PDT

I deleted a mod for Total War, (minor factions revenge) and it was next to some windows files when I typed "minor" into the search bar. I'm fairly certain I only deleted the mod, but it feels like my computer is slower. Did I do something wrong?

    Hyper-V or Virtual Box?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:48 AM PDT

Planning on setting up a Linux Mint VM and Ubuntu as I am enjoying learning and using linux lately but I am confused as to what would be the best option. I'm not a virtualization pro but I understand what to do but what I don't understand is if it would be better to use native Hyper-V and subsystem for Linux or if Oracle Virtual Box is worth using. Currently using both actually, Virtual Box on my laptop and Hyper-V on my workstation (need to upgrade my laptop to pro). Is it worth it to upgrade my laptop to 10 Pro and get Hyper-V or save a few bucks and use virtual box? What are the pros and cons here?

    Thank you!

Can't reset, update, or create a recovery image in Windows 10. No solutions work.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2019 09:40 AM PDT

I've been trying to do a clean reset. I get an error that just says "There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made." There is no error code and no solution I found in 12 hours of searching worked. Someone recommended that I update Windows, and I saw I had an update pending. I tried to update, and I get error code 0x8007000d (see screenshot here). I've tried every solution I could find, from different strings in command prompt, to third-party scripts, to sketchy software that promises to fix any error codes you get.

Finally, I gave up and tried to create a recovery image and do a manual reinstall from a flash drive. But when I open Recovery Drive, it gets stuck on "Please wait" and I can't go any further than that.

Literally, what the fuck am I supposed to do here? I wasted a whole night trying to fix this and absolutely nothing has worked. Obviously, this all stems from some update which I didn't even want, know, or care about. The warranty on my laptop just ran out less than a month ago and I don't have the money to just replace it outright. Seriously, this is driving me fucking insane. I just want to reset my computer. That's literally all I want to do and nothing has helped.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro version 1803 on an ASUS PC.

Minor note: Photo gallery doesn't open or load for me. Apparently, other people who have had this error also can't open photo gallery or Windows Photo Viewer or whatever.
