The guy at the Verizon store told me that you should replace your phone chargers every few years. Is this true or was he just trying to sell me something?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:24 PM PDT

I have a perfectly working turbocharger from my old Nexus 6, but I don't want to screw up the battery on my new phone in case he was right. He said that over time, the chargers don't charge at a uniform rate, and fluctuate more with their charging speed, and that can be bad for your phone battery. That's the first that I had heard of that, but is that a real phenomenon?

EDIT: The consensus seems to be that the Verizon guy was in the wrong. Thank you everyone for the responses!

August 2019 Windows update prevents my USB keyboard from working

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:50 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone could shed any light on this. I updated windows 10 this morning, I believe it was quite a big update, but afterward my USB keyboard (Cooler Master SGK-3040) just stopped working completely. It would sometimes receive power but had no input regardless.

I tried all the different USB ports, I tried going trhough device manager and updating the drivers. I checked the manufactures website to see if they had any additional software but to no avail. So I've rolled back the update and I'll stay on this update for now.

I'm curious if anyone else is having this same problem?

i have a spider inside my PC

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:31 PM PDT

it might sound silly, but im slightly worried about a spider hanging out in my PC. I'm not worried about the spider itself, i actually like spiders, but can it damage my PC in any way? i have an NZXT h500i case, and i can see it hanging out in a gap between the glass and the front of the PC, and there are cobwebs inside too. is it safe to let him stay, or should i evict him? thanks. :D

PC keeps restarting for automatic updates while failing to actually update.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:52 PM PDT

My PC is a standard windows 10, HP Z220 with an I7-3770 CPU.

Every single day Windows does it's usual thing of forcing its automatic upates despite me doing my best to disable it. It always restarts and supposedly updates, but keeps failing to update.

I tried to disable them permanently by adding gpedit.msc, but I keep getting the 0x800F0831 error code.

How do I get out of this endless loop?

    Defect 2080Ti?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:44 AM PDT

So i upgraded my rig about a month ago but I kept my GTX 1080.

Everything worked fine but last week i decided to complete the upgrade with a 2080Ti. After some stress testing there are vertical lines all along my main monitor (34401440, DisplayPort) and it occasionally flickers. The lines don't appear on my 2nd screen (19201080, HDMI) even though it's also plugged in to the card.

PC is unresponsive and sluggish after BIOS Update

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:34 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I just flashed my asus strix b450-I BIOS to the BIOS version 2702 from version 2501.

Before I updated my BIOS Version, everything was running extremely smoothly and my PC was not slow or sluggish at all. I would get around 140-150 fps in BFV on ultra everything, but after I updated, I got 30-40 fps. Everything I type and click is delayed by a few milliseconds and its very unresponsive when I try to open any applications or new tabs on chrome.

Is there any way to fix this or revert back to my original BIOS version?

Here are my PC specs if that helps:

    Ryzen 3600x

    asus strix b450-I

    RTX 2070 Super

    16gb DDR4 3200mhz

    Thank you

Windows Update Killed My Nvidia Overlay / Shadowplay?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 11:00 PM PDT

Nvidia GeForce Experience is telling me:

Driver Update Required | Critical Update for IN-GAME OVERLAY

When I click "Update Driver", it tells me I have the latest driver for my card (GTX 780M). The overlay settings are greyed out with an alert telling me that my Windows version requires a higher version of my driver but it won't let me update it. I currently am maxed out at version 425. I read that version 430 is out but I can't download it

Is my overlay gone? Any help would be great. Thanks.

PC suddenly froze, then shutdown. Will not boot up again.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:09 AM PDT

    Mobo: Asus x299-e

    CPU: i7-7820x

    GPU: GTX 1080ti

    32 gigs of ram

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 80+ Titanium

Boot drive is a 1tb Samsung 860 evo

    Western Digital 4tb secondary

    Corsair H100i v2 watercooler

Hello. This just happened as of 2:40 a.m. central time. I've been adjusting things and poking around somewhat for a day or two after work. Took the plunge, overclocked the processor using Asus' little wizard in the BIOS. I've been playing around with the speeds on my water pump and stress testing the temps with some mild gaming just to be sure it was working properly. I had just wrapped up a session when I decided to backup files and look into getting a larger capacity SSD. Maybe moving a few dozen gigs around caused a critical overheating event or something?

I had just been looking at a file called "root.era" on my desktop. Google didn't help any, but the properties attached to the file claimed it to be a system file. I got curious and opened that up. 9.6 or thereabouts gigs of data, last modified 9/30/18. Opened with notepad, and it contained all kinds of random symbols, primarily what looked like some type of Asian language? Not Korean I don't think, but more Japanese or Chinese. I know random data translated into language can spit out random characters, but this seemed odd. I decided to let it sit because nothing happened. (I feel this is important, not because I suspect it's a virus or something like that, but because I hadn't ever tried to mess with it before.)

After that, I suspect this might have done me in. I found an old Adobe Premiere project, got curious, and opened it up. Adobe Premiere came up with a box saying it was initializing and my pc froze.

I thought it was a mild hiccup, it's happened before, but when my whole system shut down, I realized I had a problem.

Now, the RGB lighting on the motherboard is still going, 2 small white lights are shining on the GPU, and every time I hit the power button, the machine attempts to boot, only to go back to it's current dead-ish state.

I can only imagine that maybe the processor overheated, as the PSU appears to want to work. Maybe I should just let it sit for a while, and this will sort itself out once the processor is nice and room temperature?

God I hope so. I'm not the most tech savvy guy (I mean, shit?), but I can learn and listen.

    Edit: formatting

Windows 10 installation... degrading over time?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 10:34 PM PDT

Hey all, got a doozy for ya here.

I'm in IT so the list of shit I've tried for this damn thing is VERY extensive but more minds and what not!

    First, specs:

    • i7-9700k (new) + Corsair AIO 360mm water cooling
    • MSI Z390 Gaming Carbon Pro mobo (new)
    • 32 GB Corsair Vengeance PRO RGB RAM (new)
    • EVGA 2080 Super hybrid with water cooling (new)
    • 650W Gold EVGA PSU (carried over from previous)
    • 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD (new)
    • Windows 10 Pro (1903 currently but it doesn't matter, I've tried numerous builds)
    • Latest nvidia game ready drivers (tried several that have been recommended as well, no change)
    • vmoda headphones and a mic setup that just takes mic cable -> 3.5mm aux

    The issue:

It started with my last machine, out of the blue games started crashing, windows was throwing DCOM permissions errors in event viewer and by the end I couldn't have any games running for more than 5 or so minutes. I figured it's time to build a new rig, so I did. Low and behold, the issue has come back EXACTLY as before.

The ONLY parts taken from the previous build are the case and the PSU and it doesn't seem to make sense that either of them would be causing this issue.

I tried setting up the machine without a Microsoft Account (in the event that my account was carrying corrupt Win10 settings with it) but no change! I've tried different SSDs, GPUs, and as you can see I've replaced every part besides the PSU.

Could it be the PSU that's causing games to crash?

I'm not getting ANY error codes from any of the games (Black Ops 4, R6 Siege, and now Remnant) which makes it extremely frustrating. It's almost like they're being Alt+F4 closed without notice and nothing is logged in event viewer either. I have tried a different keyboard and mouse as well to ensure that there's not an stuck keys that may be causing intermittent closures.

The only other thing I noticed is that towards the end of previous machine even Discord would have massive issues such as dropping connection and if I left the channel and tried to come back it would crash discord. I am banging my head against the wall with this thing!

I may not have listed everything I've tried here but I am willing to try anything again and again and again. HLP PLZ

Cannot boot into windows without doing a restore first

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:00 PM PDT

    Hi there

So I recently built a new PC.

    Specs are as follows:

    • Ryzen 9 3900x
    • Rtx 2080ti
    • Asus prime x570p
    • 64 GB ddr4 ram
    • 1tb nvme M2 drive pcie3.0x4
    • 3tb HDD
    • windows 10 pro

I've had issues for a while now. Initially my bios was all mucked up so I updated that and my M2 drive started working again. But in order to download the bios update I had to install win 10 onto the 3tb HDD.

Things worked fine but I started to notice in the bios that even tho I formatted the HDD back to NTFS it still had a windows boot record.

Every once in a while when I would reboot, I would get stuck at Asus' motherboard screen with the circle dots spinning around. Computer beeps once which means post was good and this is after the screen saying f2 or delete.

I would get this if I told bios to boot directly to my M2 ssd or if it just had it follow the normal boot procedure (m2 then HDD). Nothing seemed to work unless I manually unhooked the HDD.

So after disconnecting the HDD things worked semi normally. Until today.

Now when I rebooted my PC today as I've done many times, I got stuck at the same circle dots spinning. Even without the HDD.

Going into the bios doesn't help anything. I've reset all settings to default.

The only thing Ive gotten to work is hitting tab on the f2 or del screen and then going to windows advanced settings and restoring to an earlier backup (3 days ago, my only option).

Has anyone experienced this before? I've tried restoring then opening admin cmd prompt and doing the chkdsk but it doesn't seem to do anything next boot.

I'm pretty upset as this is my main work rig, and I'm spending a lot of time dicking around trying to fix this. Please help!

How to leave "Windows 10 Home in S mode" without using a Microsoft Account

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 10:24 PM PDT

I got so far setting up windows without an account just to realize my laptop came in S mode. I can click the blue "Get" button from the "Switch out of S mode" on the Microsoft Store, which prompts me to sign in/sign up. Or, it shows "I have a Windows 10 - S mode Switch product key". I know every new computer comes with a licensed Windows 10 key, but I don't know for sure if that's what it wants me to enter. Are they the same key or is it an entirely different key I would need? If so, how do I find this product key? It's not on the box or laptop. Thanks!

    Help, can't uninstall Intel XTU

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 07:31 PM PDT

Intel XTU isn't listed under programs to uninstall and I can't find the binaries locations under properties of the shortcut.

Rerunning the installer returns a complaint about it already being installed, and system restore also failed.

Where the hell did it install itself to, and how can I remove it?

Ryzen 3600 New Build BSOD Every 2 minutes

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:35 PM PDT

Hey guys, looking for some advice as Im going crazy. Nothing I do helps or does anything to my brand new system. Three days ago, I built a new computer specs are:

    Ryzen 3600

    x570 Aorus Elite/Wifi 8/2 Driver

    Crucial Ballistic Sport 32GB 2X16 DDR4 32000 BLS2K16G4D32AESB

    Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 XT

    H100i AIO Liquid Cooler

    WD Black 500 GB NVMe M.2 - WDS500G2X0C

    850W EVGA PSU

    Windows 10 1803/1903

I installed a fresh windows then got a bsod after about 5 minutes of the fresh install. Figured it was a driver issue, went through windows update, downloaded all the drivers for graphics card, and motherboard and still kept getting bsod. Now all the parts are brand new with the exceptions of the power supply. I had been using this power supply in my old build with no issues. I tried to keep track of which error codes I got and these were the most common. XMP is disabled

    KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE

    KERNEL_AUTO_BOOST_INVALID_LOCK_RELEASE

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

RAM was originally in slots 2/4 then I switched it to 1/3. No change. I thought I had a faulty ram stick or something so I tried swapping ram with my brother's 2600 ryzen rig(G.Skill Flare X Series 2X16GB F4-2400C15D-32GFX) and vice versa. My computer was still getting bsod, now almost every 5 minutes while my crucial ram was running without any problems in his pc. I swapped out the m2 ssd thinking it might have been something wrong with that and used a ssd in my old setup with a fresh install of windows as well. Now this time I was getting bsod even during the windows set up and after the install it was the same as before, every 5 minutes bsod. This is actually the second motherboard I've tested out, the first time after I tried changing everything I assumed it had to be the motherboards fault. Now Im completely lost, pulling hair out my head. Took me forever to even get dmp files because of how often it was bsod.

    Below is my dmp file

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=14iZnz0Cqb_TFSLX0eawDSXg0L59vWT7-

I noticed another user has almost the exact same problem as me. Anyone have solutions?

Question about graphics card update for a Dell desktop

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 04:00 AM PDT

    Hi there,

Last week I purchased a refurbished Dell Optiplex off Amazon for the purposes of video editing on Adobe Premiere Pro.

I thought all of the specifications of the model met the Premiere Pro system requirements of Premiere Pro (i7 core, 16gb RAM, 4 processor count, Intel HD graphics, etc), but when I open Premiere Pro, I get a warning message that says:

    "Warning: Intel (R) HD graphics 4000 v.10.18.104425

Intel display driver may cause performance and stability issues. Update driver version 100.6286"

I'm not very knowledgeable about computers, but it seems this means I need a better graphics card? Is it even possible to successfully switch a driver on a refurbished model? If I get one will it be incompatible (and thus a waste of time?)

My processor details are: Intel core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, with which I can only use the lowest playback/rendering option on Premiere.

Thanks for your help in advance!

How do i fix this issue? Asus swift PG279q monitor, blacks gone pixelated! HELP

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:51 AM PDT

Not sure why this started but recently this monitor started having issues with colour banding. When watching a movie it gets pixelated and grainy in dark areas of films. Tried 4k films on netflix aswell, still same issue, even setting it to the highest quality. I think it's only happening when I watch movies. This hasn't happen before. To be honest it's acting like a PG278Q.. Anyway I can resolve this issue without buying a new mointor? Calibrations or settings i can try?

Output colour format is RGB and output dynamic range is set to full..
