$300-600 USA, helping a family member get a laptop for final year of high school

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:21 PM PDT

*Total Budget: USA and $600 max .

    * Best specs for the money.

*Prefer on the thinner side, will be carried back and forth from school to work.

    *Windows

*Mostly word processing and college prep work, she does however enjoy minecraft so I'd like it to run it at decent settings.

*A decent keyboard and touch pad would be nice, a screen that isnt terrible quality.

*This is just something I'd like to do to help out my niece and reward her for keeping her grades up, taking college courses her senior year, and keeping a steady job since she was 15.

    virtualization in a 13inch body (6 core, 32GB RAM)?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:09 AM PDT

    Hello,

I am looking for a small form factor laptop (I spend way too much time on the flights) that would allow me to work on my VMs (VMWare and VirtualBox). Other than that, it will be just a communication device (emails, documentation etc.)

    The requirements would be:

    - hi-res screen, preferably matte

    - 32GB RAM (preferably user serviceable)

    - CPU 6 core i7

    - at least 512GB storage (preferably user serviceable)

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you for reading.

Moving from Mac to PC - Help

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 12:18 AM PDT

Have had Mac's for 10 years.

Looking to move over to PC -Overwealmed by options.

I have found a Dell G7 17 which has all the specs I would want. However reviews say it runs hot, and there are a negative comments from users online who say the same that it runs hot (too hot?) and that the fans run loud. (I'm aware of options for undervolting and repasting CPU (Though would prefer not to have to do any thermal repasting on a brand new machine)

Am I being overly concerned with the thermal issues people highlight for this machine?

    Dell G7 17 | I7 9th gen |Rtx 2060 | 16gb ram | 256 SSD and 1tb harddrive.

I am open to any suggestions for other devices with this spec that would have a better thermal and fan performance / control.

Main tasks would be be video editing, photo editing and as a stream only machine for console gaming.

Budget about £1500 but would go higher for right machine. Looking for machines available in UK.

Welcome any help. Thank you in advance.

    Budget laptop for sidekick programming

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:20 PM PDT

I got into Computer Science last year and I already had a monster PC when I entered the course, it can handle any coding software for any field of programming really really good. But the more I go deeper into coding the more I realize I need a portable device to get the best out of my skills. I mean you can't just take up your PC and assemble it at the library to code there because your siblings are asleep in your room, right?

My PC will still be my main device for gaming and programming projects. So I only want the laptop for on the go coding, like trying couple of lines of code rather than a whole program. Thus I want it to be a budget laptop (something less than $500) with as long battery life as possible. And preferably to look silky nice too.

Looking for a laptop for college, light gaming and typical streaming services.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 12:39 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: USA and max budget is $900.

Do your prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life, or best specs for the money? Best specs and battery life. No preface on 2 in 1.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, as I will travel to school with it and work.

Wish OS do you require? Windows would be best. But not opposed to others.

Do you have a prefaced screen size? 14 inches but I will take a 15.6 as long as it's thin and light.

Are you doing in cad/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you'll want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft and a new game that is not out yet called Hytale. Similar to Minecraft but think of every mod added lol. The best settings and FPS you think I should have as I don't know much about that.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices?

    N/A

    Final thoughts:

I just need a good laptop that's fast and reliable. I want it to be light and portable as I will travel to and from college with it. I feel like I've been looking at laptops forever and came across this sub.If I could get something below $900 that would be awesome. Thats the most I want to lay for one. Really hoping someone can help me and thanks so much in advance!!

Help?????? A laptop for a student.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 03:36 AM PDT

This laptop is going to be used in my study, Industrial product design. The laptop is going to be used for things like documenting projects, making presentations, posters and making 3d CAD models. At the study we use SolidWorks to make 3d designs on the latop. SolidWorks is a pretty 'heavy' program and therefore the minimal requirements for this latop are:

It needs to have the minimal specifications of: Memory (RAM) 8 GB Processor: Intel of AMD (i5 or similar) Graphic card with at least 1GB RAM Hard disk: Minimally 128 GB (SSD / HD) Monitor: 13-15 inch with full HD resolution Operating system: Windows 7 or 8 64 Bit,

The optimal specifications (the ones I would rather want if it fits within the budget) are:
RAM: More then 8 GB Processor: Intel or AMD (i5 or similar) (or more) Graphic card: Quadro graphic card with minimally 1GB RAM Processor: 256GB SSD or more Monitor: 13-15 inch with full HD resolution Operating system: Windows 7 or 8 64 Bit,

Weight is not a necessity although light and thin is of course preferred. I would rather not carry a monstrously heavy laptop every day to school.

Budget 300-500 euros preferably, country of purchase The Netherlands

Can someone suggest me which one(s) fits best to my specifications and other wants. Thanks a thousand in advance

Beginning seminary soon and I need a new laptop.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is around €600-700 but I can't go slightly over if necessary. I'm in Ireland.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a big deal, but I don't want anything too heavy - I'll be travelling with it a bit.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be using basic stuff for study: Microsoft Office, web browsing and maybe some light gaming during the holidays (Civ 5).

    • I might be doing a bit of video editing and some photoshop but nothing too intensive.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A backlit keyboard would be great but it's not a big deal. Also, a decent battery life is a big plus.

I'm not looking for anything too flashy here, just basic stuff I think. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for a portable, high spec laptop, with long battery life and many built in ports...but it needs to be easily repaired/customised.

I must be able to easily open the laptop up to upgrade the SSD or RAM, or replace faulty parts (eg, keyboard)

I do NOT need a gaming PC.

I'm looking for a highly portable device which, when I get home, is highly powered (for file transfers, MP4 encoding, etc)

    HPs vs Lenovo

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:32 AM PDT

I'm about to buy a laptop for Uni, it's going to be used for coding, writing notes and some really occasional gaming (I have a desktop for that). I'm currently deciding between these 3 laptops:

    HP Pavilion x360 15-dq0000nc (560€)

    + cheapest of them all

    - has only 4GB of RAM, but i already have another 4GB RAM at home (should be compatible)

    HP ENVY x360 15-ds0000 (670€)

+ probably the best build quality and i really like the looks

+ you can open the lid with one hand ^^

/ I'm not really sure about the CPU performance, compared with the Pavilion (Pavilion is only dual-core, but it has better single core results). Which CPU would you choose and why? Am i going to utilize all 4 cores for the already mentioned usage?

    Lenovo IdeaPad C340-15IWL (740€)

+ Best CPU (at least in benchmarks)

    + Lightest of them all

    - Doesn't have a numpad

All of them are variants with 256GB SSD. I have another unused 1TB HDD and it would be awesome, if any of them could take it.

Looking to take advantage of Lenovo sale prices in Aussie webstore - basic video editing

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 08:31 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Australia, budget of up to 3000AUD but would prefer to keep it closer to 2000AUD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life and specs are more important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Reasonably important but don't think it will be a dealbreaker.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inch minimum, 15 is better

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This is what's making choosing difficult for me. I plan on doing light video editing. For work, I do basic screen capture stuff but I'm planning on doing some filming and basic video editing as a hobby when I go travelling. This means more RAM and a discrete video card comes into consideration.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Basic gaming that isn't particularly graphics intensive.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and decent webcam.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Here's the brief story: I'm traveling quite a lot next year and for work I do screen captures of powerpoints etc. I am looking at adding some basic video stuff for fun while I travel, meaning I need something that has enough RAM and power for that.

In the Lenovo small business store the current sale options are (in Aussie dollars):

    THINKPAD P53S $2240 (8th Gen Intel Core i7-8565U, 250 nit screen, Quadro P520 2GB)

    X1 EXTREME GEN 2 $2755 (9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H, 500 nit screen, GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q 4GB)

    THINKPAD T590 $2171 (8th Gen Intel Core i7-8565U, 250 nit screen, GeForce MX250 2GB)

All configured with 16gb RAM and 512gb SSD.

To me, the P53S seems like the best deal given the sale price but I'm slightly concerned that it's a bit heavier and chunkier than the other options. I don't know if this will be a huge deal as I think I'll mostly be settled in an Airbnb or cafe for a day's work, but something to think about. Obviously the X1 is the most powerful but also most expensive.

I'm open to other suggestions such as the new XPS15 or anything else really - these are just discounted by almost $1k in the Australian store.

Gaming laptop consuming on average 18W in discharge rate even on IDLE. Is this normal?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 02:06 AM PDT

So I checked batteryMon and when I'm in IDLE with battery saver on, Nvidia battery boost, undervolted my cpu and disabled the turbo boost with almost minimum brightness (level 2) I had 18W in discharge rate.

    Is this normal?

I have the HP omen (RTX 2060, I7-8750H) . I know this laptop has the reputation of not having good thermals but after a little tweaking I get about 36 - 49 degrees Celsius.

**NOTE: This laptop doesn't only enables the dedicated graphic card. So I cannot switch to the intel GPU

Looking for something to play Sims 3, on a budget.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 01:33 AM PDT

Hi all, my partner's laptop died earlier this week and can't be repaired so i'm in the market to replace it. She mainly uses the laptop for playing The Sims 3, with quite a few expansion packs, a few hours per night. The laptop wouldn't really be used for any other gaming, so I'm not sure what would be most suitable. Ideally I wouldn't want to spend more that £500 this month on it. I've found a Medion P6685 i5 8250U when shopping around, but I'm a bit apprehensive as I can't say I have heard of the brand. It has to be a laptop due to space unfortunately. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Should I buy the Acer Predator Triton 500?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:16 PM PDT

I am absolutely in love with this computer, it truely does seem to have everything I want in a laptop that will last me years and years,

The issue is. Should I buy it? All the reviews of the RTX GPU seem negative. How it's over priced and useless.

Should I buy the triton 500 with the RTX 2060? Or is it just useless and not worth it, and if so, do you guys know any other laptop that is the same price range as this laptop that would be more worth it? Also I live in Canada if that helps.

Edit: I feel like I left some stuff out because I was tired and decided to clarify a bit. The reviews I saw of the triton 500 where great, I'm just worried because the reviews of RTX 2060 were old (in around February) and I'm wondering if RTX cards are worth it now.

And if they aren't worth it then my budget is around the same as the triton 500 Canadian price. Meaning 1500-2500 dollars canadian. My requirements are, good battery life, great colour accurate screen as I'll be using it for art. And a graphics card so I can play games. Basically something similar to the triton 500 that you think is a better option for me.

[No specific budget/ budget friendly/ US] I am thinking if it's cheaper to buy a laptop rather than repair it, which laptop would you suggest based on the information displayed below?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 06:56 PM PDT

    FORM

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** I don't have a specific budget, I am willing to splurge if it's worth it. However, I would prefer a budget friendly laptop. I will purchase it in the United States * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life is important and a 2 in 1 form factor would be nice. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Very important as long as it can process large amounts of information or useful for coding * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I would prefer Windows but I am open to other OS. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** No, as long as I can see documents side by side easily. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** None of the stated. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** No, but a touch screen would be nice since I am accustomed to having one and a reliable build quality. Like stated before, I need a laptop that won't break so easily since I tend to sometime drop it. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I currently have a lenovo laptop even though I began to like it over time, I ended up having a cracked screen and the part that attaches the screen and keyboard is damaged. I am thinking if I can't repair this on a budget, I'll buy myself a new laptop which I really need. I would like to have the following: + Long Battery Power + Can code smoothly especially in R and Python without having to wait for so long for my code to upload or for my program to be terminated. I really need a laptop that can process the information + Lightweight (Easy to carry around ) and Fast + If it were to fall, it won't crack or break so easily + I have about a 14in screen which allows me to see documents side by side easily but I am open to smaller screens as long as I can see documents side by side easily. + Budget Friendly, I am willing to splurge if it's worth it. As long as it can last a long time. + Also if it can bend backwards into a tablet

    Please provide me suggestions.

I have never owned a gaming laptop before, but found these two that seem to suit my needs. The Acer Helios 300's design is too gamer-y for me, and the 2019 version is too expensive. Going to use this for gaming and a bit of work for Uni - weight isn't a problem. Not sure which one is better, please help!
