    Simple Questions - August 28, 2019

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Graphics Card Leaking Liquid?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:16 AM PDT

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I was watching the Csgo major and I suddenly got a pink screen. I noticed that my graphics card (Evga GTX 1060) had some oil/liquid on it. What is this from? It's impossible that I spilled soda/water etc... Is my GPU still fine?

Edit: Kind of looks like some sort of battery acid.

    Picture: Leaky gpu https://imgur.com/gallery/Md251xg

    Pictures: Motherboard https://imgur.com/a/5SvsDfx

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I'm about to wipe it up and hook it back in unless I shouldn't. Please let me know if I shouldn't!

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I haven't put thermal paste or anything on my GPU, no backplate either, just put it straight in my rig. No water cooling in my system either.

Edit: Boot screen is super pixelated. Doesn't show windows, cannot see display after bios screen.

Edit: I think graphics card is dead. The Led is flickering and it's making some weird noises.

Edit3: So I think what has happened is my graphics card had something blow or leak or whatever causing it to break (most likely caused pink screen of death as well). The small drops of liquid found on the motherboard were blue as well as the ones on the graphics card. Everything else in my computer is fine, I swapped in my old 1050TI and it works perfectly in this system. While testing with the 1060, the boot screen had lots of random pixelations and colors, then would not show display for logging in or desktop or anything.

As for the lines on my RAM, I'm not sure what it is, but it still works. I have identical sets of lines on each of my two ram sticks in the same position. Cat piss maybe? Acid leak? Idk?

Edit4: Thank you all for your help and input. Didn't expect this post to get so much attention, but I'm glad it did!

[Build Ready] It's really happening... $1900 Budget. Looking for any showstoppers or quick fixes to my build.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:48 PM PDT

Just bought the CPU + Mobo combo on Newegg, so it's real. Buying the rest of my parts this weekend. Wanted to do one last run through in case I'm missing anything. Don't want a complete overhaul; I like how my build looks and should perform. Nearly all gaming, especially Overwatch and Borderlands 3 (once it comes out), plus whatever other game-of-the-week type stuff comes out. My $1900 budget is for everything needed (monitor, keyboard and mouse, mouse pad, etc). Please note that several items have already been purchased.

Let me know what you think, and thanks in advance!

I went on vacation for 10~ days and upon my return, my PC will no longer boot, post, or show any signs of trying to turn on except a quiet click from somewhere in the PC, probably the PSU. (Different from the power button actuation)

The first time I tried turning it on, I got the case lights to turn on, but they immediately went dark and the PC never lit up again.

I get no fan spin, no GPU leds, no debug LEDs on the motherboard's onboard debug tool, and the only indication that the PC is getting any power at all is through the standby power led when the PSU is turned on, and a split second flash from the motherboard's RGB strip along the back, all white in color.

I tried unplugging the GPU cables, reseating the ram, unplugging and replugging the motherboard power cable, nothing works.

EDIT: GPU is stock speeds never overclocked, RAM has been set to its XMP 3200 profile and worked just fine.

Edit 2: some English stuff. Autocorrect can be quite "helpful" at times.

    3600? or 3700x? (144hz 2k res)

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 11:07 AM PDT

I have a 2070 super and x570 motherboard. i heard the 3600 is a really good price per performance and if not the best right now. so should i stick with getting the 3600 and just upgrade in the future? or just get the 3700x now?

Which CPU cooling should I buy + general opinion on the build.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 04:20 AM PDT

Hello, so I am preparing a new build right now with pure gaming as main use. I am a bit of min-maxer and I like to overclock. I spent some time researching stuff to make sure everything fits.

This is my parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/d8gKP3

Designed to be used with 1080p 144Hz monitor, later on I will consider adding a 1440p too.

I want to overclock this i7-9700k to at least 5.0GHz(hope chip is good enough) together with GPU and RAM.

However I hesitate about cooling solution. Should I go with air cooling in form of Noctua NH-U12A with chromax later on, or AIO NZXT Kraken x62? I want my PC to be almost inaudible when idle and have acceptable noise levels under load (mind you I have closed headphones so this shouldn't be a problem). I also care about looks a bit. I heard AIO's have problems with loud pump noise and CAM software from NZXT is bad.

So air cooling: Noctua NH-U12A + NZXT H500 + Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB or water cooling: NZXT Kraken x62 + NZXT H500 + Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB

I don't mind paying price difference. I care about cooling my components when OC'ed while visuals are not bad.

Also I have a few questions: 1. Is this RAM from corsair good for overclocking? 2. Does NZXT H500 have acceptable temps inside? 3. Is this PSU good enough or should I look for a better one? 4. Is there a big difference in thermals and noise between MSI Gaming X Trio 2070 Super and Gigabyte Gaming OC 2070 Super?

I need your help, building a programmer PC

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 01:15 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am a freelance full stack developer in Europe. Typically my clients provide Linux PCs(laptops) to me for building JavaScript and Php/Java applications, but these contract computers are no longer cutting it. They are negatively affecting my ability to program. Long compile times (5+ minutes) and poor performance in PHPstorm/idea ultimate are now major road blocks. These applications typically consume a large amount of RAM 4GB+. Typically I have 2-4 instances of these programs open while compiling...

I am technically savvy and have built PCs in the past, but I am not up to date on the current technologies.

I have read up upon the AMD 3000 series of threadripper CPUs and think they could be a good fit for me.

Can someone recommend a build for me? Ideally with a ton 16GB+ of RAM, SSD and multi core CPU? I do not need a graphics card, integrated graphics are okay(I think) mini ITX is a bonus so long as it does not cramp CPU temps.

    Thank you!

Edit: this PC would ideally run Linux Mint or Arch Linux without compatibility issues.

Edit2: ECC compatibility is also a plus

[Build Help] New build NOT turning on with cpu cable plugged in, but does without?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 10:43 AM PDT

After setting up my PC, I powered it on and everything lighted up, everything looked fine, I noticed that I had forgotten about plugging in the CPU power cable, so I shut the PC down, unmounted the CPU cooler and plugged the CPU power, and put the cooler back on, now nothing happens when I try to power on my PC.

NOTE: CPU is Ryzen 3600, mobo msi b450 tomahawk

Would appreciate a last review for my gaming/programming PC build. [England]

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 12:46 PM PDT

    Build Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

For playing games such as Fortnite, Minecraft, CS;GO etc. Also for heavy programming using languages such as C++, Python, Haskell, Fortran, Prolog etc. And collecting e-books and articles, and writing documents for academic research.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm looking for smooth performance in most popular online games, mainly FPS/TPS. Above medium settings is desirable.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    My budget is 800£.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    England

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I feel like my build is overpowered for my purposes, so if that's the case, can you please advise me for cheaper specs, even if the budget gets below 700£? I'd like for my PC to last long and be upgradable, so I wouldn't mind investing in the necessary specs for that. Thank you for your time.

I chose the Asus TUF motherboard because it has wifi, a usb-c port (for my mechanical keyboard), and for the $200 pricepoint it's pretty good. The only issue is that when putting the parts into pcpartpicker, anything below a 750w power supply comes up with the error "Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard has an ATX connector but [PSU below 750w] does not." I looked it up and it seems like something to do with the number of pins on the connector. The threads I read said it doesn't matter (?) and for peace of mind to get the 750+ psu but I don't know what I'm doing. If I'm going to run into any issues with the seasonic 750 then let me know. I was originally getting a 650w because 750 seems like overkill but I can't trust myself to make the right call when pcpartpicker says there are compatibility issues. Anyway, I'd love some feedback before I buy.

    2070 vs 2070super

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 09:09 AM PDT

So, I'm planning to upgrade my PC, currently I have a i7 4790K with a 390 8gb, my plan is to upgrade to a 2070 or 2070 super, where I live, the 2070 super is 1/3 more expensive, so I don't know if is worth it. I don't have any hurry so if there is something to release and worth the wait, ( 2060 super is a bit more expensive then the 2070)

RTX 2080 PNY XLR8 Fan Question

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT

    G'day mates.

I am trying to install a Arctic Accellero IV on to my PNY RTX 2080 that I bought open box at microcenter for 509.82 (with my open box R9 3900x for 424.52...jaHESus the 3900x is fast..my GOD <3 Microcenter 4 lyf)

The card doesn't have a back plate on it and is a bit too loud for my near silent case, and i decided to upgrade the heat sink to this massive beast.

The problem is, the header on the PNY card for the fan is actually a 12+ wire riser ribbon cable, which does both fans and the RGB LEDS. The fans themselves plug into this small riser PCB with a non-standard connector. I have decided to remove and mount the small riser PCB on to my new Arctic Accelero IV with strategic zip ties. My plan is to cut the factory fan wires on both coolers, and splice it in.

2 questions, do you think that the 4 factory wires will be in the same left to right order as the accelero IV wires for the fan? If they are not, can you see any damage in reversing 2 of these connections anywhere on a 4 wire PWM fan?

Also, The factory fans don't splice into one connector (there are 2 fans on the XLR8), but each have thier own port on the small pcb. Since the arctic accelelro IV only has 1 connector, should I just use 1 connection or should i splice both connectors into my arctic acccelro fans (8 wires to 4 wires) to make sure it has enough juice?

The kit came with a way to connect the fans to a molex connector (one for 12v one for 7V)...but their is no way I would do that, because the main reason I got this cooler is to keep it quieter.

    Graphics card confusion

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:18 PM PDT

So when I turn on my pc, my graphic card behaves as normal, then the fans shut off, but I read some only come on when it hits a certain temperature, then under devices it shows my ram my processor but no gpu, is this normal, and here's the kicker, the hdmi I plugged into it displays the signal, so I assume it had to be working. It's my first time building and kind of giving me anxiety, any clarification?

Looking for a "gamer/racing" chair (Didnt like the IKEA Markus)

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 03:04 PM PDT

About 2-3 years ago I "upgraded" from a crappy staples leather chair to my current IKEA Markus chair. I kind of liked it at first, but actually sat in my old chair the other day (gave it to a cousin) and was thinking "why did I ever get rid of this??"

The crappy chair was very soft, had soft leather arm support, and you could easily fall asleep in it. Not a lot of back support or ergonomic features, but it was just really comfortable.

The Ikea chair is nice when your sitting upright and typing or playing an intense game, but just laying back playing an RPG or something - SUCKS. I end up playing more games on the couch with the controller because I dont really like sitting in the Markus for a long time. The arm rests are hard rubber. I even look them off completely at one point and it was a little nicer.

I know everyone hates on "gaming" chairs, and I dont care about colors or any of that crap - but I do like the feel of them.
I know they arent ergonomic, and dont breathe great, but I feel more "hugged" in them

IS there anything out there for around $150 thats decent? Theres not many stores around here, so I kinda gotta just trust online reviews/reddits opinion.

    Anyone have any recommendations?

Just looking for overall best value for the money.

    Key Notes:

    1. Ordering all parts from Amazon Prime, so some decision were made based on that.

    1. Wanting a transferable OS not OEM

    1. Wanting a small form factor case but not ITX

    1. Prefer intel and Nvidia over AMD

    1. Looking to play top quality games like FFXIV, WOW, Overwatch, etc.

    1. Looking for good value build.

    1. Prefer good performance, cooling, and low noise.

    1. Resolution about 1440p

    1. Need Wireless Connectivity

Please let me know what you think of the build. Please provide reasons for changes. Thanks!

Looking to make the leap into PC gaming! Look over my chosen components?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2019 02:47 PM PDT

Just let me know if you recommend changing anything, to something similar priced but better performance, or if I'm overdoing it on any parts. I play a lot of for honor and some overwatch, and want to run those at high frame rates. Planning on getting a 1440p 144hz monitor, and want Cyberpunk and (gods willing) FFVII Remake to look absolutely fantastic when they come out.

I want to replace my HDD with a SDD but I am not experienced and unsure of what to do.

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 08:15 PM PDT

First off, I need to decide which SSD I should buy. I didn't want to spend too much money, but the HDD my computer uses is 1TB. I have 702/917 C: space, so I'm gonna want to buy a SSD that is near 1TB, right?

Secondly, my computer came prebuilt (It's a dell inspiron 5680) everything looks pretty cluttered and I can't tell what's what. I tried watching youtube videos but they pcs they use look different than mine and it isn't helping much. I'll post pictures of the inside of my pc in a bit.

Any help on how to replace my HDD with it would be greatly appreciated.
