    Simple Questions - August 13, 2019

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

To first time builders or upgraders: RAM speed is *really* not important in the grand scheme of your build.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 07:11 AM PDT

Its really not. Here is a VERY detailed heavy article about how RAM speed works, to include some simple benchmarks.

    https://www.pcsteps.com/7932-real-ram-speed-mhz-cas-latency/

In my personal opinion, RAM speed should only be considered if your CPU is ungodly overclocked and/or high end of the high end spectrum.

If you got a budget build, or a casual build with current consumer or last gen hardware, 3000Mhz is just fine. Anything more is negligible performance gain for price... and doubtful you'd even notice a difference.

In fact, too fast and/or overclocked RAM can actually cause instability and crashes.

Its honestly more important about where you buy your ram, than worry about the speed.

    Edit

People. I didn't say your speed doesn't matter. I said anything over 3000 is not a good purchase sense for performance vs price. I said 3000 is fine. Anything over is a waste.

Building PC especially for music production... Also photo editing and little bit of gaming.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 05:00 AM PDT

    CPU - AMD 3700X

    GPU - RX 580 8GB

    MB - Asus B450-E

    RAM - HyperX 2x8GB 3200 MHz

    SSD - Adata XPG SX8200 Pro 256GB

    HDD - Seagate Barracuda 2TB

PSU - Seasonic Focus 650 Gold

case - Fractal Design Meshify C

Can you please tell me your opinions and advices on this built?

I am little bit afraid of CPU/GPU bottlenecking but if it doesn´t affect my audio work it´s not problem.

    Is 16GB RAM enough?

Is MB optimal for this built? One reason I picked this MB was because of good audio card (SupremeFX S1220A), is it better or at least equally good as Realtek 1220?

    Thank you very much guys

ELI5: what matters in CPU, other than clocks and cores?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 04:42 AM PDT

I am thinking about upgrading my old fx 8350(8 core, 4.4Ghz), and decided to compare it to the Ryzen 5 2600(6 core, 3.4Ghz), and on both on youtube and userbenchmark it hugely beats fx 8350. Now i understand that Ryzen can turbo to higher speeds, but still cores and clocks are in favour of fx 8350. Then why is Ryzen is beating fx by so much? What other things should you look at when choosing a CPU?

    PSU question

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:46 PM PDT

If my pc partpicker part list says my build will require an estimated 394W, but my graphics card recommends 650W, can i get 550W-600W or should i just all out go with the 650W? I want to save money with my build and 650W PSUs are kinda expensive. (Looking at Corsair and EVGA one's at least)

Upgrading older build to suit 2080. Possibly SFF someday.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 01:56 PM PDT

A couple of months ago, I bought a 2080 without thinking through how it might go with the rest of my build, and I'm pretty sure it's getting bottlenecked pretty hard. I'd like to upgrade some parts, but I thought I'd actually think more this time and get some advice. I'd just upgrade my CPU and cooler maybe RAM, but I think I probably be changing sockets so a mobo will probably be part of it too.

Considerations: I'd like to move out of this case and into something smaller someday, probably the NCase M1 or a Dancase A4, so the a mini ITX or DTX board is what I'm thinking of.

Budget: Pretty flexible. 300-500 USD maybe? I'm mostly interested in hitting that price/performance bang for your buck point, so that budget can move if it makes sense.

Primary uses: Gaming, on a 4k tv, occasionally a 1080p monitor. Also VR gaming. Emulation.

Current Build (the relevant bits, I think): PCPartPicker Part List

    B450 Vs. X470 Vs. X570 Motherboard

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:42 PM PDT

Hi, I'm interested in purchasing either a B450, X470 or X570 motherboard for a Ryzen 7 3700X. The X570 are quite expensive so I was wondering what the differences between the different chipsets were so I can make a more informed decision on which one I should pick up. All comments are very much appreciated! :D

    Desks are Frustrating

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 09:48 AM PDT

So I'm kind of in the market for a new desk. I wanted a butchers block style desk... but almost every one I find that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.... is only 24" deep. I currently own a 24" deep desk, and it literally feels like I'm sitting 2 inches away from my monitor and it almost feels like I'm blinding the hell out of myself. I'm a low sense player when it comes to gaming, so I legitimately need as much room in the front of the desk as possible, and I feel as though it's legitimately impossible with only 24 inches to work with while I have 3 monitors in the entire thing. Personally, L shaped desks used to work for me with 2 monitors, but with 3, I legitimately feel like I don't have enough room. So I began looking for a 6 foot long, 36 inch deep desk, or table top, counter top, anything. But short of building it myself I don't know what else to do

Belgian deciding on a new powerful gaming rig. Details inside.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:23 PM PDT

    Hello everyone.

After seven years of faithful, dogged service my old gaming rig is starting to show its age.

I have some budget freeing up and have pieced together a first draft of the build I'd like, and I would love for reddit's opinions/advice.

What am I using this PC for?

This PC will be used mostly for gaming, chief among which ArmA 3 (which is notorious for not working well with AMD Processors). Part of the ArmA 3 gameplay is hosting a server and running ZEUS ops with quite a lot of processor-heavy AI, although this will likely be offloaded to the old gaming rig as a dedicated server box in lieu of retiring it.

Other AAA games will also be played, along with occasional streaming for fun and -possibly- some light video editing.

*Where am I ordering the parts? *

I will be ordering the parts from Alternate.nl . Prices will all be including tax since we don't do prices without tax included.

Link to the webshop shopping cart: https://azerty.nl/basket/?code=YTo4OntpOjI5ODAxNDI7aToxO2k6MjY0Mzg4NTtpOjE7aToyNjUyMTMwO2k6MTtpOjQ1NzkyMjtpOjE7aToyMjk2MzU2O2k6MTtpOjI3NjUxODQ7aToxO2k6MjM2Nzc4MDtpOjE7aToyNTA4NDM2O2k6MTt9

    Part List

GPU - Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC White 8G @ €590.00

    CPU - Intel Core i7 9700K @ €395.00

CPU Cooler - Cooler Master ML240L RGB (Liquid Cooling) @ €58,05

    Motherboard - MSI Z390-A PRO @ €125,05

    RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) @ €96,90

    Primary SSD - Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB (M.2) @ €112,95

    Casing - Sharkoon Skiller SGC1 Window Black - Midtower Model @ €42,55

    PSU - Corsair RMx Series RM650x @ €103,05

According to a quick PSU calculator I should be needing approximately 554 W. Not sure how much leeway I should give myself, 600 W, 650 W or 700 W, but I am aiming to get Platinum/Titanium PSU.

Price for the above parts (including VAT): € 1,533,55 There's a little leeway in the budget (upper limit €1,800)

Recycled parts: 2TB HDD (ST2000DM001-1CH164) 2x older 1080p screens with HDMI Assorted externals (external HDD, mouse and keyboard, etc.)

I've also been mulling over whether buying a Windows 10 license is actually necessary, what's your advice? :)

This is phase 1 of the new gaming expericence.

Phases 2 and 3 will be upgrading the screens to 144hz 1440p screens (4K is not a priority or goal for me at this time) and buying a VR rig (not necessarily looking for specific advice yet, that will be early 2020).

Thanks for reading, and thanks for any advice you can give.

Selling my current rig, looking for advice on how can I price it properly?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 09:53 AM PDT

Sorry if this type of post is not allowed, but in my older age I decided to move away from desktops into laptops for the first time, and I am selling my current desktop rig. My brother put it together for me from parts he had, but we are not sure on how to price the hardware for sale. I just plan on selling it locally and would like to post it at a reasonable price so I can recoup some costs from my laptop purchase.

If I post the hardware specs, is this a good community to get some feedback from? Or should I check out a sub like r/hardwareswap?

I don't see any rules against these posts here. If it is inappropriate, I will delete. Thanks for any help!

    Upgrading a very old PC

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:05 PM PDT

Hi r/buildapc, this PC has been struggling a bit recently with any games above low - medium settings. I built it quite a long time ago when I had no money and I would like to do a bit of upgrading. I'm a total novice and my budget is still pretty tight (under €500 if possible). I'd love a new monitor if that could fit in as well. PCPartPicker does not have my graphics card available to add or I would have used that for the output

I am studying for my master's of engineering and I would like to be able to do some of my simulations at home which can be CPU intensive if that wouldn't be too expensive.

     CPU - Intel Core i5 3550 @ 3.30GHz RAM - G.Skill 8.00GB (2x4GB) Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24) Motherboard - ASUS P8H61-MX USB3 (LGA1155) (Micro-ATX) Graphics Card - 2048MB AMD Radeon R9 255 Monitor - DELL E207WFP (1680x1050@60Hz)

Just a gratitude post to this awesome community and its users. Y'all helped me journey from longtime Mac user, to PC curious, to feeling educated enough to purchase (nearly) all of the parts for my $2.5k budget mini ITX build (3700X, X570, 1660 Ti). Just waiting for M1 v.6!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 01:50 PM PDT

Seriously, thank you! The people and resources here have been amazing. After about a month of research and tinkering, I finally took a stiff drink of whiskey and purchased my parts.

If all goes to plan, I'm building a little jack of all trades beast. Gaming is not important to me (but with this I might just pick it up). Hobbyist audio production, personal Plex server, and up to 4K entertainment / streaming. Built to look good, stay quiet, and last (my last machine was a 2012 MacBook Pro).

I'm sure everyone has different ways they would spend a $2.5k PC build budget. But I really think I'm happy with where I landed. That's not to say you shouldn't yell at me if I missed some huge red flag. Please do. I'm sure I'll return something before this is all over. But I'm really excited.

I'm going to (impatiently) wait for the M1 v.6 case and buy it first chance I get. I feel good about the fit; I was able to find video builds with virtually all of these components. Not positive the extra 120mm side case fan will fit, but getting it so I have the option. I also haven't finalized a decision on a monitor; I plan to go look at some in person when I get time.

My only existing components are a 27" FHD monitor with an HDMI 2.0 cord, and Bose computer speakers. This (hopefully!) represents everything else I need. Even keeping track of tax to keep myself honest (ugh).

So again - thank you! I'd like to call out for gratitude by (user)name /u/floxay, /u/spudlovely, /u/raduque, /u/etnguyen03, /u/thekidmostdope, /u/destinydamon, /u/rastlin65, /u/flamingi123, /u/emeraldarcana, /u/deezarereal, /u/shazneg, /u/MikeyLew32, /u/couchpotatotalk, /u/frostbyte62, /u/modernstayathomedad, /u/pcgamez and especially /u/octoviano for flagging that the mobo was back in stock to me days later, and /u/x3lr4 who came through for me with thorough and patient answers multiple times in multiple posts.

I know I'm nowhere near the finish line. Still don't have a case to build in, and have to build it without breaking it and make it turn on! But it's a big commitment hurdle. What do you think?

My fist PC (switching from a MAC)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:55 AM PDT

After 5 years of using my 2014 MacBook pro, I've decided it's time to switch camps as anything Apple is offering is way too expensive (although I'll definitely miss MacOs).
Having no experience and no tech background I've set out on this pretty difficult quest and these are the results I've ended up with.
I should probably mention as well that I'm from Poland and the prices here are a little higher and the used parts market isn't really that great.
While attempting to build this I've somewhat followed the recent budget 1440p guide from the channel.
I can't post links, so I'll just list the components.

I'm actually worried about the compatibility of the b450 with the ryzen 3000, but the site at which I'm considering to buy says they upgrade the bios, so I guess it should be fine? Also amd swears that it should work, but there are many reported problems...

    [AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor]

[Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard]
