This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Why cant I get 144fps for my new 144hz monitor ?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 09:49 AM PDT

So I bought a 144hz monitor today with the resolution of 1920x1080

I have a 3840x2160 60Hz Monitor here as well and in a game like Mordhau for example I get stable 55 to 60 fps in 2160p but now in FHD with the 144hz its the same, even less or just slightly more fps like in fhd, I played on High in 2160p and now it can´t even get over a 100fps with FHD and 144hz ?

In Forza Horzon 4 its the same, in 2160p on ultra i have a constant 60 fps, on fhd with 144hz its the same or less...

    I have a RTX 2070 and a i5 9600k

I mean thats not normal right ? Any suggestions ?

    EDIT:

So I tried basically everything now. I have turned off v sync everywhere I could, had only this one display attached to the card, reinstalled all the drivers, tested my framerate with https://www.testufo.com/ and see there its 144hz... In Cs Go I get 100-130fps so not even the full potential but I can see a little difference... Thats just way too low for a rtx2070 and the i5 9600k to do in cs go... Framerate was never capped to something under 144fps in the games I tested.

Hwmonitor basically just shows me that my cpu is at a constant 70 to 80% at normal temperatures with 4,3ghz and no limiting caused by heat or so... GPU sits at 60 to 70% normal temperatures too.

    My full rig:

    ASUS TUF B360-Plus

    i5-9600k

    Crucial DDR4-2666 2x8GB

    Gigabyte RTX2070

    Samsung 860Evo SSD

Displayport Cable I also use for 2160p60 and it definetly can do the 144hz

I will reinstall my whole system at the weekend as I have basically no Idea anymore what I could do else

    Is G-Sync worth it?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 06:28 AM PDT

Unsure if this is the right sub for this but here it goes: I'm starting a new build and am pretty confident I want a RTX 2070 or higher to drive a 1440p 144Hz monitor. I also already picked up a Ryzen 5 3600 for my CPU. I've been seeing sales for various 1440p 144Hz monitors with and without G-Sync and was wondering if the G-Sync premium would really be worth it?

In the specific case of the LG 34GK950, the Freesync version is allegedly "G-Sync compatible" and is 144Hz base whereas the true G-Sync version is only 120Hz overclocked. I've read this review of the G-Sync version and they seem to claim that for gaming the G-Sync version comes on top due to much lower input lag granted by the G-Sync module. But they also seem to say that the FreeSync version is basically better in every other category like factory calibration, color depth, frame rate, and motion blur reduction. Is the input lag reduction and variable refresh of a true G-Sync more valuable than the extra 24Hz, color depth, and limited variable refresh of the "G-Sync compatible" Freesync version?

    EDIT: GTX -> RTX

The Never Ending Trainwreck - tried three different motherboards, two different 1060s and PSUs, but still no POST?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 07:40 AM PDT

EDIT: Because Scan asked for the CPU back a few days ago, they are now saying that I am past the fourteen days return policy...a policy I would have been able to do if they did not say that the CPU was working and take ages to return it. *I thus cannot return a broken PC.*

Posting this here and just about everywhere I can think of, and tagging in u/GBT_Matthew and u/GBT_Brian as I'm completely out of ideas at this point. I'd have put this in /r/AMD as this is my first ever AMD build, but the rule in there for all techsupport to go in one place means it'd probably get drowned or something.

Obligatory tl;dr: I've gone through three motherboards, two GPUs and had my CPU tested, but still cannot find a problem that is stopping POST and am now completely out of ideas and very, very nearly about to send everything back and give up on building a PC.

So, let's start from the back and come forward: after many, many years soldiering along with a first gen i3, I finally got round to building a new PC last month, taking the few bits that were worth taking from the old PC to the new one. I ordered everything from one place, Scan, and - deciding that it was better to be safe than sorry - popped another £44~ on ScanProtect just to be sure in case something went terribly, terribly wrong. I ordered the following:

CPU: Ryzen 3800x, which had pretty much everything I could have possibly wanted from a CPU.

MOBO: Asus PRIME X570-PRO, which I chose because it could support an M.2 RAID.

RAM: 32 gigabytes worth of Corsair Vengeance, divided into 4 sticks of 3600Mhz.

    SSD: 2x 1TB Samnsung 970 Evo Plus

NWC: An ASUS network card, bought a day after I got the machine when I realized it didn't have any WiFi.

PSU: EVGA Supernova 850w Gold, because my brother - an experienced PC builder - gave me some real good warnings and advice about cheaping out on the PSU.

Case: Game Max Shadow, pretty much the only case I could find that met my particular brand of aesthetics.

From my old PC, I took this:

GFX: An Asus 1060, with just one fan on the card. I can't even find this thing on PCPartPicker anymore. I intended to get a bigger, chunkier card in the future, but the fact that I had a 50% bottleneck on this thing before I upgraded to my Ryzen was a good enough performance gain for me to be happy with it for a long while.

HDD: Some old Western Digital drive full of stuff that I put into the PC after its first day of booting, all around fine and good.

For the first few days, all went well. I had my PC working downstairs plugged into the TV since I had to wait for my wireless card, so I just connected straight to the router by a short cable and just did everything there. Updated the BIOS, installed Windows (and ultimately reinstalled Windows, after accidentally corrupting the installation by fiddling in the BIOS. Whoops.) did all my drivers, hell, I even played Fallout 4 and Battletech down there. All went well, and all was good. After a couple of days the network card arrived, got installed, tested the PC there, everything worked fine. My brother and I finished assembling the case, after which it was moved to a proper desk, where it ran like a dream for a good seven days. During this time I heard a little bit of a clipping noise coming from the inside of the case, most likely a cable hitting the GPU fan. This was caught and fixed, and whilst there was a little bit of harmonisation or whatever it's called, when the entire case vibrates a little because of its position, that got solved, didn't seem like a problem and I don't believe it had anything to do with it, but just for completion's sake I'm mentioning everything that I can recall.

Then we get this huge, angry summertime thunderstorm. Being very, very protective of my new PC, I hop out of bed at the first bang and unplug my PC from the wall just in case a bolt of lightning hits the house or something. Next day, the PC boots fine after I plug it back in and everything goes well...at least for the first few hours.

That's where the problems start. I was playing Fallout 4 for a while, then went downstairs to get a cup of coffee. When I came back upstairs, I found my PC back at the Windows 10 log in.

"That's odd," I say to myself. "Maybe it overheated and rebooted itself or something?"

I log back in, the PC humming along happily, then go to Chrome to start googling about possible causes. I manage to get around three or four minutes of use before an instant black screen of death. It was dead as a door nail, but there was no flash of light, no puff of smoke, nothing. Just completely, utterly dead. Tried to boot it again, still dead, no POST.

So I call in my brother, and we start going through the machine, trying to figure out what's going. I've wrote everything below:

First motherboard fails to POST, but managed to get off a single, solitary beep on one RAM stick. After cycling through the others to confirm that the other RAM sticks were either dead or dying, we got back to the original RAM stick and it didn't beep, despite it being in the same spot as it was the first time around. Diagnosed as a dead MB, sent it back to Scan, they did a test there and confirmed that it was a dead motherboard that didn't post, no idea why, but RMA'd me a new one. During the whole time that we had the problem, there was a white VGA light on the motherboard, as if the graphics card had died, but my brother has an identical and confirmed working 1060 to mine and swapped his in, but still got the white light of a problem with the VGA.

Second motherboard arrives, machine gets completely rebuilt, everything is the same as when the original machine was set up for the first time, machine fails to POST, giving a white VGA light. Swap in the other 1060, still get the white VGA light. We can't even get to the BIOS to check if there's something wrong there, and all the info we've got about the ASUS x570 Prime says that it has to get to the BIOS to do any updates there, so we can't tell if there's a problem in the options there or anything of that sort. We get back in touch with Scan and start the process of sending them back another motherboard. Thinking that it might just be some problem with Asus, I decide to drop the cash and buy another motherboard and get the Prime refunded, this time from Ebuyer because they can get it me the day after I ordered it, and go straight for an Aorus x570 Ultra - a good motherboard that I probably should have had from the start. We dismantle the machine, box up the second dead ASUS motherboard the next day, the new one arrives, we reassemble the machine...

...and still no dice. Everything is in, everything lights up on the board, but we get another VGA light, exactly like we did on the Asus boards, but we know the graphics card is fine and the RAM seems good as well. Now I might not be the luckiest guy around, but the chance of getting three dead motherboards in a row from two different vendors and manufacturers is so far out there that we don't even consider that, and phone Scan once more to tell them about the board coming back. We talk with them for a while, and the technical support on their end reasons that it might not be the motherboards that are dead, but the Ryzen 3800x, so they make arrangements to pick the parcel up at my house and take it to them.

That was yesterday: the motherboard fails their tests and is written off as a no post, but the CPU is said to be fine so they send it me back and start the process of crediting me for the mobo.

That brings us to today: we get the Ryzen 3800x back. Thinking that it might just need a BIOS update or something, we use the QFlash feature to update the BIOS without the CPU installed, then fully reassemble the machine and try and POST.

Nothing. VGA light, no signal on screen.

We short the CMOS, my brother thinking that there might be some setting stored there or something.

Nothing. VGA light, no signal on screen.

We try a number of boot attempts, in case this is some kind of rare issue, so we count to ten attempts.

Nothing. VGA light, no signal on screen all ten times.

We remove the cable for the graphics card, trying to deduce if there's something wrong with the cable, as my brother has done that before and got a low power warning on his display when he did.

Nothing. VGA light, no signal on screen.

We strip out every nonessential feature on the motherboard like the RGB strips to the case and so on.

Nothing. VGA light, no signal on screen.

We bring my old PC alongside and swap out the cable connections so that the confirmed working EVGA 750w Gold in that machine can power the new machine.

Nothing. VGA light, no signal on screen.

We remove the RAM sticks and test them one by one.

Nothing. VGA light, no signal on screen on all four tests.

I can't even think of anything to try next. We've done pretty much everything that comes to mind, and honestly, I'm all out of ideas on what to do next and am very, very close to just throwing up my hands, admitting defeat and getting a prebuilt Intel or something, or just trying to drive up to Scan in Manchester with it in the back of a car just to try and see if they might have any ideas or anything that can help me get going again...and I've only really got till the 14th of August to sort this out, because that's when my ScanProtect runs out and I could end up stuck with a dead component. We're both completely out of ideas on what to do next, so I'm willing to try just about anything to get this to POST.

Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong, or have seen this kind of problem before? Could I have got a third, broken motherboard?

Gaming/Streaming Build for my lil bro!

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 12:07 PM PDT

Hey everyone! My little brother is my best friend in the world and for his 14th birthday I promised to upgrade his junk laptop for a real mans gaming desktop. He's currently placing around top 2000 in Fortnite and is an absolute beast. I want to get him the build he deserves, but I'm not rich. He wants to be able to play on ultra settings, with 144hz capability for the monitor. I've been toying with this build but if there's anything I can swap to get it closer to $1000, that would be extremely helpful. Obviously part of that is the monitor and operating system, but any suggestions on how I could lower the price without sacrificing much performance would be amazing.

I received the parts faster than I expected, and so yesterday I began with the help of a friend building the beast. Everything went perfectly (except for the M.2 screw that I couldn't for the life of me find inside that motherboard box, it was probably forgotten, I hope I'm gonna be able to find one !), and I had the best feeling ever when I pressed that button for the first time and it worked. It's all thanks to you guys, the amount of help and explications I received here is through the roof, so thank you all very very much ! Now I'm off to try and make good use of this machine :)

    The specs are :

AMD Stock Heat Sink and Noctua Fan

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:40 AM PDT

    Hey what's up guys,

So I bought a noctua cpu cooler 2nd hand off offerup and it didn't have the Am4 mounts so I decided to take the AMD stock stealth fan off and replace it with one of the noctua fans. And what a surprise! My cinebench score went from 2706 to 2749 and under load of that test max temp went from 101.3C (stock fan) to 74.3C (noctua fan). Also Idle went from 51C to 36C. My Ryzen 5 2600 is set at 1.35 v and 3.9 GHz.

    Here are pics: https://imgur.com/gallery/E4cF0Wj

Also I didn't know how to mount them so I just used 3m tape to make sure it stays in place.

    Have any questions? please ask!

Edit: I'm not done at all with my build so disregard the mess inside. ( Should I make a video on this?)

ALSO this is the fan that I'm using both the heat sink and in the back of the case

PC restarts from random things in room

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 02:25 PM PDT

So my PC has been acting very weird lately. It runs perfectly, but sometimes if I turn on my light or even plug in a usb into my PS4 or PC my PC will just restart by itself. It happens completely at random. One time I touched my desk and it reset. What's going on?? I can't find any recent answers online.

    Help with Displayport Issues

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 03:04 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I recently built a pc which has been working well except I am unable to get signal to the monitor via displayport. HDMI has been working fine, but when I was first setting it up sometimes the whole screen would be green, and sometimes it would be really faded. Unplugging and replugging into the monitor only solved this issue. Since then, HDMI has been working completely fine on every start up. Does this mean my problem is more likely to be the monitor than the card?

I was able to get signal via displayport only once after much unplugging and replugging, however the screen was green and replugging did not solve the issue. I have tried unplugging the monitor completely, all sorts of messing around with cords and monitor/ graphics card settings. Card is an msi Rx-580. I'm wondering the best way to determine if it is my card or the monitor as I do not have another monitor to check it with.

    Upgrading 5 year old build

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 10:00 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes,

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, possible 3D printing/modeling down the line

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Currently only getting 40 fps on AC odyssey, would like to get over 100 on ultra for older games like this.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $600

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Current:

Case: Corsair that I can't seem to identify

    Mobo: ASUS B85M-G R2.0

    CPU: intel i5-4590

    GPU: Gigabyte 1070TI

    RAM: EVGA 16GB DDR3 + Random 8GB DDR3

    SSD: Sandisk 120GB

    HDD: WD 1TB

    PSU: Thermaltake TR2 600W

    Proposed Upgrade:

Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F $126.99

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X $239.00

    GPU: (Same) 1070TI

RAM: (realized I need DDR4) Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB $79.99

    m.2: (upgrade not necessary) Samsung 970 EVO 500GB $89.99

    SSD: (Same) Sandisk 120GB

    HDD: (Same) WD 1TB

    PSU: (Same) Thermaltake TR2

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Currently, I'm running a system I built about 5 or 6 years ago. I feel I'm bottlenecked by my processor. Of course, that requires a mobo and ram upgrade. I wanted the m.2 just because they seem inexpensive and awesome. The old parts, including my old GTX 960 will most likely be donated to my nephew for his first build. I'm wondering if anyone believes I'll run into any issues fitting this new system into my current case, or if I should just consider a new case all together (mine is somewhat beat up). All suggestions welcome. Prices are based on my Amazon wishlist.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

How can I improve my cable management?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 04:02 PM PDT

I've posted this photo of my new PC build in a few places, and as much as I've done to manage the cables, I've gotten a few comments that my cable management seems a bit messy:

This is a link to a photo of my current PC build

The thing is, most of the cables are already routed behind the motherboard. There are some lengths of cable that can't be hidden, such as the lengths of cable coming back from behind the motherboard to plug into things, and the lengths of cable that are plugged into the power supply (which are routed directly behind the motherboard). My PC build also includes an internal memory card reader, which has a USB3 plug, and an optical drive, which has a SATA cable and power cable. Beyond routing most of the cables behind the motherboard (which I've already done), what could I do to improve the cable management in my build? Perhaps I could route more of the cables behind the motherboard, but I'm not sure if that would make sense or not..

    Is this build any good?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 08:51 AM PDT

A friend of mine recently told me that he wanted to build a gaming PC. The game he mentioned was Xplane, which I'm guessing he wants at 1080p60. He has an $800 budget (buying in the US), so this is what I came up with:

Is this any good? I have built my own PC before, but I'm a little rusty on what parts are currently good. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Thanks for all the replies everyone! It's a great help.

Ze - NO RGB 3900x + RTX 2070 Super Build

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 12:58 PM PDT

    Build Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbA3HblTfp0

    Images: https://imgur.com/a/GFz9H6r

I named it Ze since my daughter loves Zebras and it is a black and white themed.

The last computer I built was back in 2014 and it had an i5-4670K and I recently upgraded to a RX 580. It still wasn't good enough for 1440p 144hz so I decided to build a new system once Zen 2 came out for Ryzen.

It took me a while to get the 3900x here in Canada but I finally managed to put everything together a few days ago.

This is probably the most powerful system that I've ever built and the closest that I've gotten to a true high end build. Most of the time I had to aim for mid range due to budget constraints but after saving a bit more this time, I was able to go a bit above mid range.

Along with gaming, I'll be using this primarily for video editing which is why I decided to just go with the 3900x even though it seemed like overkill. I'm hoping this build will last me quite a while especially because it's 12 cores and 24 threads. I went with the 2070 Super primarily because I knew that I'd be gaming on 1440p 144hz for a while and I also don't mind not playing on Ultra settings for competitive games. The monitor I have is freesync and is on the list for compatibility with gsync.

I also wanted to go all out with RGB but after a lot of thought and consideration, I decided against it. I wanted to use the h115i along with outfitting the case with the ML140 RGB fans but it was going to be a bit much and wasn't going to be worth it. I may decide later on but for now I'm happy with the black and white theme. Although the mobo does have some RGB but I turned it off.

    Modern Home/Media PC (No Gaming)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 10:21 AM PDT

Is this a powerful (but not too powerful) PC for browsing and media (running from files on my PC, not streaming). I desired something modern and efficient but not too OP for my uses. I will be running Linux and possibly (but unlikely) a media server in the future for when I'm away and want to watch a film.

NOTE: The SSD (and later M.2 NVME SSD) will be used for running OS and programs, so it doesn't need a lot of GB. The HDD is for storage of ripped media and playing them through programs on SSD.

CPU: Multi-threading? Athlon instead of Ryzen?

RAM: Do I need 8 GB?

    Case: Corsair 200R?

PSU: Will 450 W be enough for my future upgrades? (Wireless Internet Card, Internal Optical Drive, Hot Swap Storage Bay, M.2 NVME SSD (250-500 GB), DAC, Amp, & Sound Card)

Overall: Are the dimensions good for all of the parts?

    PCPartPicker Part List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4P2wGG)

    CPU | AMD Ryzen 3 2200G 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor | $79.89 @ OutletPC

    Motherboard | ASRock B450 Pro4 ATX AM4 Motherboard | $79.99 @ Amazon

    EDIT: Upgraded RAM to DDR4-3200. Memory | Crucial 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory | $40.99 @ Newegg

    (Already own) Storage | Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive | $0.00 @ OutletPC

    Storage | Western Digital Blue 1 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive | $41.99 @ Newegg

    Case | Phanteks PH-ES614PC_BK ATX Full Tower Case | $99.99 @ Amazon

    Power Supply | SeaSonic FOCUS Gold 450 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply | $70.98 @ SuperBiiz

    | Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts | | Total | $412.84 | Generated by PCPartPicker

    (Repost for time availability)

EDIT: I will be adding an internal optical drive, hot swap storage bay, and eventually discarding my old SSD for an M.2 NVME SSD (250-500 GB) so I require an M.2 slot and at least 2 5.25" bays.

Best somewhat budget motherboard for Ryzen 3000 series

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 04:15 PM PDT

I'm not exactly great with computers so i have no clue what the differences in boards are so and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Id also like to stay under $250 cad (around $200 usd) if possible.

    Thanks in advance.
