    Simple Questions - August 04, 2019

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I am sure I'm not the only one here who build a PC every 6 or so years and always feel a newbie at it because of the time gap between the builds that lets me forget almost everything?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 04:37 AM PDT

Yes I get it you can still upgrade some parts. Well I don't, I still have my late 2014 build (i5 4690k and GTX 970) and even if I have built 4 PC for friends or so 5 years ago I feel like I'm now starting from almost scratch...

Do you guys build PC every 2 years to prevent this?

EDIT: Thanks all for the feedback! I definitely now know I'm not alone at all :). I should reapply my thermal paste and clean the PC for once. All the forgotten knowledge will come back!

I think it’s time to tell people not to build a PC.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 02:48 PM PDT

Many of us frequent the same subs and it's not uncommon to see a user ask questions here, see them comment again in r/buildapcsales, and a month later they are on r/hardwareswap citing an emergency and trying to unload their wares.

Custom PC building, pc gaming, and everything else that comes with it is a great hobby. It's fun to do right from the start and because of the progression of technology it stays interesting all through the upgrade process. But it's expensive. Not only expensive, at times impractical.

Too often I see a barely used 2080ti for sale because the dog is sick and needs a $800 operation or whatever. This prompts the question of "why did you buy a $1300 card if you don't have $800 set aside for real life" but we all have to say "sorry to hear that. Great price. Glws."

Or even the oh so often I built this system for $2000 3 months ago but don't use it enough so I want $1700. Why are you dipping your toe into a hobby that can start as low as $500 to find out you don't like it with top of the line gear? You don't say "hey I might like working with wood, I'm gonna buy a $20,000 lathe"! You buy a $50 saw and some nails and spend a month finding out you'd rather go to ikea than sweep saw dust.

I'm really not asking anyone to parent anyone else's decisions or wallets, but I really don't think we need to take pity on them either for being irresponsible. Obviously I don't want anyone to take the time to lecture anyone else. I'm just hoping this post finds them before anyone should feel the need to.

WARNING: When installing Windows 10, make sure you activate Windows BEFORE you take the sticker off the package and affix it to your PC..

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:36 AM PDT

So I literally just got my Windows 10 OEM package in the mail 5 minutes ago. I take the sticker off to put it on my computer, and the sticker rolls up and sticks to itself. I try very carefully to unstick it, but it didn't work. Now I can't read the product key and I'm in a live chat with Microsoft trying to fix this. Ugh.

Why mini ITX boards in full ATX case?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:39 PM PDT

I'm dying to know the answer. I first saw a mini board in full tower at Best Buy the other day, and thought it looked really odd. Now I'm seeing in some builds online. What gives? Why spend more on the tiny mobo and turn around and put it in such a huge case?

    Is pcpartpicker's watt estimate accurate?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:14 AM PDT

It says my build only draws 375W max (without overclock). That sounds awfully low, doesn't it?

    NOTE: GPU hasn't arrived yet.

I just built a new pc, I can go into the BIOS but I can't seem to boot into windows.

I wasn't able to setup windows with a USB stick so I tried with an older version of Windows from a CD and it worked but it never goes past "Just a moment" screen and most times it just freezes when starting up.

I tried moving the RAM modules with different configurations, the motherboard 24 pin and 12V cables are connected, I don't know what else to try.

EDIT: It's working now, thanks everyone! I updated the BIOS, deleted windows from the disk and reinstalled the latest version.

Power Supply is Very Important .

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:40 AM PDT

Remember People , the most Important part of building any PC you want to last is the Power Supply .... It governs everything , and if you use a Cheap 1 and a capacitor decides to explode , this can permanently corrupt Mother Board , Video Card and other Hardware .

CPU Temp not displaying correctly after crash.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:59 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I'll get right to it. I went on vacation and came back today and turned on my pc and began watching netflix on it. I ran windersat to see any files I could delete to free up some room on my ssd when it crashed. Both of my monitors were frozen however there was still sound. I shut down my computer and after that it would not post. I then began doing all the usual trouble shooting steps and after removing almost everything I got to where I am now. Everything seems to be working however on hwinfo where there would usually be core 1 for temps that space is blank. It simply does not display a temp. This is also true with the package temp. I have a delided i7 7700k processor if that can help you help me. If anyone needs more info I will hapily provide it as everything seems to be working fine but I do not want to risk it.

Is there going to be a benefit when gaming with 32gb of ram instead of 16gb?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:51 PM PDT

The only thing I do on my pc is gaming and I currently have a Ryzen 5 2600 and 16gb of 3000mhz ram. Seeing how cheap ram is currently, would it give me a boost in games if I had 32gb of ram?

Which GPU should I buy 1070ti or VEGA 56?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:55 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to get your opinion on which gpu I should get. I would describe my computer knowledge as above basic, so I am coming to you. I would absolutely love to game at 4k.

I am from the UK and have vouchers at a shop called CEX after trading in multiple games, blu rays etc.

Currently CEX are selling a 1070 TI for £290.00 and the Vega 56 for £245.00

    https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=sgranvigtx1070ti8gba&categoryName=graphics-cards-pci-e&superCatName=computing&title=nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-ti-8gb-gddr5

My current config is as follows.

    ASUS Z270-A Prime

    Intel I5 6600K

    16gb G Skillz Trident 3200 Mhz DDR4

    Corsair TX850M Semi Modular PSU

I mainly game on my Samsung 4K 55 inch TV. My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster S23B300 which displays 1080p.

I am drawn to the 1070ti but is the extra £45.00 worth it over the Vega 56.

    Thank you in advance everyon

Partner and I are content creators, 3900X are sold out in CAN so going to build with Intel, about to buy parts but is the 3950X worth the wait?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:55 PM PDT

My partner and I are both content creators, she streams 5 days a week, 1080p games and makes emotes and art for others live. I edit 4k footage and shoot a video podcast.

    We currently have : i7-7700 RTX 2060 16GB RAM

It's far from cutting it, I want to edit, render and export quickly and she wants to be able to stream and record at the same time on this new PC so we decided to build one.

We live in Canada so the 3900X have been sold out and 3950X is not expected until Sept so was hoping to build this in the next week. Because the workstation will be so gaming focused will it be worth waiting for the 3900x restock or even the 3950x?

She streams high detail games like Overwatch and Monster Hunter, does anyone with a 2080ti and Nh-d15 have any trouble with size or heat (the i9 runs super hot as well?)

Would a larger case, or any recommendation on extra fans to help keep low temps?

With editing multi cam interviews the 64GB ram is preferred, should we be going with a higher quality ?

Any information or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Am I overlooking anything on this build as a first time PC builder?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes I have read the sidebar and rules.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I plan on playing games like DayZ, Arma, Rocket League, PUBG. I also want to produce music on FL studio and possibly record live sound. It will also be a workstation at home for normal computer use.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm switching from console, so I'd like to be above 60fps most of the time. I like playing games that are visually attractive, so I'd like to play on the highest settings possible for my machine, but obviously don't want to sacrifice frames for visuals. The monitor I have chosen is a 144hz monitor at 1080p.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I have spent around 1200 in parts, including a new router and modem. I can't justify spending much more than that with my current income and bill situation. I've never built a PC before so don't really know what to expect but I tend to abide by the buy once cry once philosophy.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Good ole US of A

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). [Consider formatting your parts list.].

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/YungInfidel/saved/#view=VfpWbv

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Replace this text with your answer.

Any advice and criticism is welcomed. The main things I'm concerned about are the stock cooler on the CPU, the RAM speed and the temperatures. I am mechanically inclined and work in the electronics industry but I've never assembled a PC from scratch like this before. Thank you all in advance.

Is the SSD I just bought compatible with my motherboard?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT

    https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/19014920

There is a link to the benchmark test.

i7-4770 Performing way below expectations (14th percentile)

Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB Performing way below expectations (15th percentile)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB Performing below expectations (20th percentile) (I have already bought an SSD and it's on the way).

Hynix 3x4GB RAM Performing below expectations (35th percentile)

...I don't know what motherboard I have. I bought the Acer Predator G3-605 forever ago and have been upgrading this piece of shit since. Any benchmark software or windows says unknown or something for the motherboard. The motherboard isn't even listed in the specs. Is it possible I have some shitty motherboard and need to replace it? It might be a Intel B85 Express from what i've found online. If someone can help me find it I will follow the instructions. Is it possible my motherboard is bottlenecking my performance?

Edit: Fuck does an Intel B85 Express have an m.2 slot? i bought this SSD https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GCL6BR4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Final Advice before I purchase my parts list!

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:21 PM PDT

After over a year of saving I (think) I am ready to start purchasing for my new build. If anyone has any thoughts or advice on this build before I buy, it would be incredibly appreciated.

I want this build to be a solid 2k gaming rig. I primary play adventure and strategy games, with some shooters thrown in. On the horizon, I would love to play Cyberpunk, Borderlands, and upcoming Total War games.

I am wondering if I am overpaying or underpaying for any particular component, and if I should be adding more cooling to the case.

Deciding on ram for new build.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:14 PM PDT

Since the release of the new 3000 series Ryzens, I have been looking into a new pc build. Ive got it nearly completed, but was wondering about my ram choice.
    I'm trying to decide between Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 4266 MHz C19 (~£235) and HyperX Predator DDR4 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) 4000 MHz CL19 (~£180).

The rest of the build looks like:
    Mobo: X570 Aorus Master
    Cpu: Ryzen 9 3900x
    Gpu: Vega 64 (already owned)
    Psu: Corsair 750W (already owned)

Both ram features on the Vendor list for the Mobo, so compatability shouldnt be an issue. Will there be much of a performance difference between the 2 different ram? If not, should I go for the cheaper ram?

Please ask if any other bits of information are needed
