Found BitCoin Miner in invisible path

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 06:26 AM PDT

I noticed loud noises after watching movies or shows, on my PC, but my CPU was never really high. Today I added a Rainmeter skin to permanently graph my GPU usage, and lo and behold, it was at 100% when I didn't touch my PC for a few minutes. I added another skin to show the top programs on my GPU and found out it was "updatedg". After some googling I found 2 other posts mentioning it as a miner.

Based on their suggestions I searched C: for it and also found it (still haven't found the hook that started it, though). Now here it gets interesting: For one neither Windows Defender, nor Malwarebytes recognized the program as malicious.* So that already sucked, but what really made it strange was that the folders above it all displayed to be empty, although I have "display hidden folders/file" set to true in the explorer.

How can the folder be empty, yet contain another folder, despite explorer settings to the contrary? Is there another setting to *really* show all files and folders?

*I uploaded it to the Windows upload page I've found, but couldn't find a Malwarebyte link, any pointers? The exe is now deleted, but I still got a zip.

Please help me fix my internet - in/out the past 6 months, ISP hasn't helped - I don't know what else to do

    Posted: 10 Aug 2019 11:32 PM PDT

My internet has been in/out the past 6 months.

The ISP company technician has come out 7+ times. They've switched out the modem/router 5 times, rewired the cable inside the house, used a temporary the cable from the house to the street, and dug up the lines in the street. They even sent out electricians because they told us our "outlet was bad" (electricians said it wasn't).

My apartment-mates (same house, different apartments) both have the same ISP (different accounts) and haven't had any issues at all. I can connect to their wifi just fine. However, we can't connect to our wifi on our laptops, phones, iPads - nothing.

Sometimes reseting the router (unplugging and plugging it), hard resetting it to factory settings, and clicking "renew DHCP lease" on the device help temporarily.

I've tried using Open DNS/Google DNS too - doesn't help.

I've tried contacting AppleCare, but they just told me to contact my ISP when everything they suggested didn't work.

When I run "Wireless diagnostics" on my MacBook, I've gotten errors from "Review Wifi Best Practices", "DNS Error", "Conflicting Country Codes", "Crowded Wifi Channel", "LAN Connectivity Failure", "Self Assigned IP address", "Custom DNS Settings", DNS Outage", and "DNS Resolution Failure". (I've told the ISP technicians all of this).

We have a password on the modem/router, and only myself and my roommate use it - so it's not too many people.

Recently, the ISP tech came by again. He said the cable wire was bent at the end and needed to be replaced, that there was an extra metal piece on the end of the wire that wasn't necessary so he removed it, that our signal was "way too high" so he lowered it, and that the modem/router had no IP address but he added one. It worked for a few hours after that - but it's out again.

I bought an app to record my wifi signal for a few hours, and it's dropped out so many times. On top of that, I pay for 30 mbps of internet, and it barely went above 10 mbps the entire time. Link: https://imgur.com/a/xaWIs9L

On top of the 5 routers from the ISP, we switched out the ISP's modem/router to a brand new separate modem and router from the store... the internet still didn't work.

We've tried connecting direct to the modem/router via ethernet cable - still no internet. Same as with wifi, it says its connected, but doesn't load anything.

I tried changing channels. I switched from 1 to 6 because 1 was what most of the other ~16 signals in my area were on. It helped for a day. Then back out again.

My account is in good standing - I pay months in advance. Even though I've been paying for almost no internet the past 6 months!

I think the problem is that my modem/router keeps "forgetting" its IP address. Every time I've called a technician recently, they say the modem/router had no IP address and they restored it. However, every few HOURS, it seems to be forgetting it's own IP address. Sometimes restarting or resetting the modem/router helps it "remember" for a few hours. However, we've tried 5 different modem/router - are they all forgetting their IPs?

Most recently, the ISP technician came out again and gave us ANOTHER new router/modem. He changed out a bunch of stuff on the coaxial cable that was supposed to alter/lower the signal strength coming in and something called a splitter and a terminator. We previously had a different type of splitter from a technician who tried to fix the internet in the past, but he said that one was too strong?

I specifically asked him to check the outside wiring, and he said he measured the signal at the street and where the wire enters the house and where the wire reaches the modem, and they were all fine - so he said the problem is not in the wire.

He keeps telling me the "signal is too high" when he comes and he has to lower it. He lowers it, and the internet works fine for a few hours. But then the signal goes right back up and the internet goes out again. He said that something keeps making the signal go up on its own. Just like every other time, he left and the internet worked for about 24 hours before going out again.

Is there a way I can check and monitor this "signal" he's talking about?

I live in a not-so-populated area, so I doubt its too many signals or someone jamming the wifi.

    I tried "pinging". Got these results.Internal: 127.0.0.1 —- 0%Default gateway = Router: —- 0%IPV4: —- 0%8.8.8.8 ——9.1-23% packet losswww.google.com ---10.0% packet loss

I'm at my wits end and I'm sick and tired of paying for no internet, but this company is the only ISP in my area.

    -

TLDR; We've had ISP technicians out there 10 times in the last 6 months. Our internet intermittently goes out every few hours and is out for hours at a time. They've changed the modem/router out 5 times (and a billion other things they've tried listed above) and the apartments in my same building have no internet issues.

Edit: He told me the signal at the street and the signal as the cable enters the house were both over 100 (cant remember the exact numbers).

Help with a CPU Win10 situation?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:36 AM PDT

Bought 2nd hand Laptop. The laptop itself, whilst old, is golden for the price I payed and perfect for what I need it for. However! Task Manager is showing: High CPU usage by Service Host & Services and Controller app. No idea what is causing this issue. The system isn't usable in this state.

Quick screenshots of task manager - http://imgur.com/a/p3a0pJo

The person sold me it with Windows 10 installed. Havn't done any diagnosing, drags too slow. Happy to scrap W10 and go straight to Linux Mint 18.3.

Think a fresh install of Linux Mint 18.3 will fix this/these issues? From the information I've provided, how can I figure out if the issue is hardware or just fucked files within W10? (I'm aware I've given little to no info) Give a noob your opinion please if you care to? Thanks for taking the time to read!

Brand new PC has FPS stutter & lag only during mouse movements

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:57 AM PDT

    SPECS: asrock z390 pro4 i9 9900k gtx 2080 xpg spectrix d41 (8g x2)

PERIPH: logitech gpro wireless & glorious odin (@1000hz)

I just got this pc and have been having issues, the issue goes across games. When I move my mouse around my fps drops, even when standing still and doing tiny movements my fps still drops AND when I move my mouse in some games my FPS stays high but there is an EXTREMELY noticable choppyness/lag to the mouse movement. I've been researching dozens upon dozens of posts of these problems and haven't found a real fix. Things that I've tried already i'll list here:

    • setting game to low priority (...)

    • tried a different mouse

    • lowering mouse hz

    • DDU uninstall and reinstall GPU drivers

    • Windows tweaks like high battery performance & removing Game Bar/xbox dvr

    • Wiped drive and reinstalled windows 10 (ver 1903)

    • Looked for the malware stij.exe (not there)

** I've found that while my mouse is moving around my GPU usage drops from 80% to under 20% **

    ** here's video : https://streamable.com/tfuet

I've been extensively testing this issue and have found some things that trigger it more and less:

In Apex Legends, when the origin overlay is ON, the game runs smoothly at 200-300fps constant, but once I move my mouse it will become EXTREMELY laggy & choppy dropping to double digit fps stuttering everywhere. If I open the origin overlay and move my mouse around the overlay, the game completely freezes as long as I keep moving my mouse around. With the overlay OFF, the extreme lag with mouse movement is gone, but there is still consistent fps drops & consistent micro stutters. Note that lowering my mouse hz in any game doesn't get rid of the issue, it only makes it less noticeable.

In Minecraft, the game runs at a very high fps 300-500. When I have the game FULLSCREENED, the fps is high and game is smooth though, when I move my mouse the game begins to severely stutter though my fps DOES NOT drop. If I have my game in windowed or windowed fullscreen it is smooth, but when I fullscreen it, it gets choppy/stuttery. Also, there have been times when I've been fullscreened and it's been smooth. It's not consistent, but I've had a youtube video playing that has triggered it happening while ingame. I paused and unpaused the video multiple times while testing it and every time the video was playing the mouse movement was choppy/laggy.

In CSGO it's the least impacting, but it's still there and extremely noticable at times. When I move my mouse around while in game, fps always drops sometimes more than others, the most drastically going from ~350 fps to low 100 or even dropping into double digit. The feeling of stuttering alongside the fps spikes is still present. Even when I'm dead and spectating someone standing still, If I move my mouse around (while it's doing nothing in game, there isn't even a cursor) my fps will drop.

In all these cases as soon as I stop any mouse movement, the fps jumps back up / game becomes smooth again and I can walk around completely perfectly. ANY mouse movement immediately creates issues which is extremely irritating.

I'm not sure what's causing this, if it's a problem with the CPU pulling info/requests from my mouse and overloading? Which could explain why lowering mouse hz makes it less noticable. If anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this please let me know. Thank you for spending time reading this and any possible solutions to my issue is very very much appreciated. Thank you so much!

Can I connect a HDMI monitor(IN) from a displayport on my GPU?

The monitor has freesync so would that still work if I just get a HDMI to DP cable?

Thermal Paste for Threadripper 2950X, does it make a difference ?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:45 AM PDT

Im planning to upgrade to a Threadripper 2950X with the Thermalright Silver Arrow TR4 as the cooler.

The problem now is that I don't know which and how much Thermal Paste to use/apply. I've been looking into Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and Arctic MX-4, but they seem expensive and I don't want to waste my money if they are better solutions for Threadripper based systems. As for the application, I've read that the method isn't that important, but the ammount of thermal paste is. As I don't want to turn my motherboard into a greasy mess, I would really appretiate it if someone could give an estimate of how much to use.

I don't plan on overclocking, the goal's just to keep the temps as low as possibile, even at 100% usage for an extended period of time (usually 4-5 hrs).

Do you think my laptop GPU is dead?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 01:40 AM PDT

My Dad has been borrowing my laptop for the past couple years since I have a desktop but now the laptop is having some issues. It is a Sony Vaio I got 6 years ago I don;t have the exact specs but it's an i7 cpu with a dedicated AMD gpu.

We suddenly ran into some issues that looked like a dead graphics card. The artifacts, random colours, and glitched out screen suddenly appeared.

I restarted the laptop and went into the recovery. In the windows recovery screen everything loads fine. So after making a quick backup of some files I did a factory reset back to windows 8. Everything seemed to be going good. It was loading normally and seemed operational.

So I went to update to windows 10. The install seemed to go normally. The problem is after the update we ran into the same problem. The artifacts and glitches were back.

I'm working on getting back to windows 8 to do some testing but it's taking a while to go back and forth like this.

I don't understand how it works fine in the windows recovery, bios and windows 8 but it looks like a dead card in windows 10.

Money is extremely tight and this laptop was pretty expensive and it makes me really sad to lose it. Does anyone have any ideas about possible fixes? Even if I could find a way to disable the dedicated gpu and just use the igpu for this.

Edit: I'm back on Windows 8 but the issues persist. I guess it is dead after all. I don't know how I will be able to afford a new laptop but I require one so I have no idea what I'm going to do.

How can I delete Windows hotkeys?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:00 AM PDT

I was playing around with automating some irritating tasks with Python and PyAutoGUI. I compiled a program that would automatically write pi for me in an app that has no real shortcut for pi. Not that complicated. I decided to make a shortcut of that program and give that shortcut a hotkey (CTRL + ALT + U). I tried the program and it didn't work how I wanted it to, so I deleted it and made it better. I compiled the new one, and when I tried to give it the same hotkey, I realised that the old program still has it. Is there any way to go delete the already deleted programs hotkey?

    Windows 10 won't install/boot on xw6600 with Xeon e5410

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:57 AM PDT

I wanted to upgrade from Win7 to Win10, i know its an old machine, but CPU and GPU (gtx 960) its still decent for casual work/gaming.

After USB installation PC freezed upon launching Win10 preparations. I've tried different Win10 versions...same story. So i decided to install Win10 from different PC onto disk and use disk on the old PC.

But it didnt boot at all, it just hanged in MSDOS, black screen, just flickering text caret.

Is it possible machine is not compatible with Win10? Is it possible to fix this? Or do i need to go back to Win7?

Can putting a sticker on paper before printing ruin a printer's drum?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:55 AM PDT

We have a Brother HLL6400dw. At my office, we notarize documents. This involves placing a big red sticker on the bottom right of one page, where there's a bunch of notary information (these are pre-printed templates). Full documents usually have on average 4-5 pages, but only one with the sticker.

I've been placing the sticker on the page before printing on it, simply because it's faster for me to do so. Yesterday, the printer started printing with smudges all along the left margin of the page (again, sticker goes on bottom right). Now I'm getting blamed for ruining the printer's drum, because putting the sticker on it before printing causes "an imbalance in the printer".

    Can that actually happen?

Some more information: Current drum has been there for about 4 months (haven't checked it's life though) We print about 6,500 pages every month

This might be a bit complicated: transferring SSD from dual Win10 boot system to another

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:46 AM PDT

So I have a laptop that's breaking down and I'm upgrading. My older laptop has an M.2 drive and a regular 2.5" SSD. Simply-put, each drive is either dedicated to work or to private use. The new laptop can only take M.2 SSDs. I took out the M.2 from my old laptop and added it to the new, but it can't boot. It's either looking for a device (my guess is the other drive) or says a file is missing/corrupted. Startup repair couldn't help me.

What can I do? I really, really, really don't want to reinstall everything and move all my files manually, because that will involve me backing everything, reinstalling windows, all of the software I already have, configurations, registry edits, ... etc.. Similar thing with the second drive. Is there a way to move all my stuff onto another drive/new windows installation without having to do this? It's too much work.

    Please help.

    Computer hangs frequently lately

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:45 AM PDT

I'm out of ideas here, so hopefully someone can suggest something for me to try. I don't use my desktop that often, but the last couple of times I have it's just been horrendous. Sometimes it's fine for a bit, but then I will click on something and it just locks up for several minutes. I initially thought it was just Chrome being Chrome, but it seems to happen even with Windows settings. So after trying to check for fragmented drives (they weren't and Windows is on an SSD anyway), deleting unnecessary programs to free up space, and just generally cleaning house to no avail, I went with the nuclear option and just reinstalled Windows. Sadly, that also did not work, though there were a few other issues I was having that it helped clear up. I've run memtest86 to check the RAM and that's fine, so I'm kind of at a loss as to what could be causing it. The lock ups start by looking like it's just taking a while, but if I move my mouse over things they seem to react to the hover state. If I click on anything, though, they won't open and eventually even the hovering doesn't work. Then after about a minute or two it will suddenly start responding again.

    Computer specs:

    • CPU: FX8350
    • GPU: GTX970
    • RAM: 16 GB, can't remember the brand
    • Windows 10 installed on Intel SSD
    • 2 additional SSDs (an Intel and a Samsung, I believe) and 1 HDD
    • Motherboard: ASRock, I think, but don't remember the model

It's a bit older, but up until now it has at least been usable. It would be nice to not have to upgrade everything, but if that's the way it is then that's the way it is.

Corsair Scimitar microswitches broke. Direct replacement or alternative?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:35 AM PDT

    Hey y'all!

So my beloved Corsair Scimitar mouse decided to start breaking on me and after disassembly and some continuity poking I diagnosed broken micro switches and I want to know if I should go for direct replacements or should I pick some alternative parts? If different what switches I should pick (I know cherry makes some but I don't know which part will fit)?

Parts that are originally used are Omron B3F-6020 for middle click and D2FC-F-7N for LMB and RMB.
