Non-gamer looking laptop with dGPU Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:43 PM PDT I'm pretty out of date when it comes to what laptops are good anymore, I've done a bit of research but have run into a brick wall of sorts. I'm looking for a 13-15" laptop that will be used when I travel for work since the work laptop i am provided with only works in the head office buildings, which isn't really that helpful when i'm out of said buildings. Since I'll need to stay in hotels overnight i would like it to also have a dGPU (don't need more than a 1050ti) for some light gaming and small amount of 3d modeling/rendering to keep my occupied at night I was so close to buying the xp15 9570 since it's 30% off at the moment but after seen all the problems it STILL has (keyboard skipping, screen flickering, audio popping being the biggest ones) has turned my away a bit. Total budget and country of purchase: $2200.00AUD. Australia Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Form factor doesn't matter, will only be used at max of 3hrs on battery, will be powered most of the time How important is weight and thinness to you? it's not as long as it's not too over the top Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux Windows, may switch to linux. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent 13 - 15.6" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run Occasional light gaming, very basic 3d modeling & rendering If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want low demand games, no triple-A titles Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad) MUST have a good keyboard since i will be typing a lot, solid build quality since it will be traveling with me a lot. with that said I'm not a fan of the thinkpad keyboards, we have the x1 carbon at work and the keyboard is a bit too soft for my liking. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion Nothing gamer looking, has to be able to fit in with a business setting. ideally have a thunderbolt 3 port since i already have a TB dock (so inputs aren't such a big issue) [link] [comments] |

$500-800USD, 13-15" laptop for computer science student Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:45 PM PDT I am looking for a laptop for college, majoring in computer science. This will really only be used for school work, no gaming or anything.

Non-removable Battery Ultrabooks: Buyer Strategy Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:40 AM PDT In my buyer-research, I'm finding that the removable-replaceable battery is going the way of the dodo. Even if it's possible to replace an internal battery (i.e. it's not glued in), the battery shape is likely too proprietary to find a good replacement in 3 years... So I'm wondering if this strategy is feasible: Get the longest-term warranty possible (5 years?) and hold the OEM to it for battery replacement in 4 years when the battery performance is inevitably drawn way down. Thoughts? This probably works better for some OEMs than others. Comments on that? [link] [comments] |

Any reviews on the Acer Aspire 5 A515-54G-76PK ? Can't find any. Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:56 AM PDT Hello, guys, I'm considering buying this laptop. But for the price, it does look a bit too good. CPU: i7 8265U quad-core, 1.8 gigahertz Url: Acer Aspire 5 BTW this is not the Acer aspire 5 515-52g there is a lot of reviews about that one but none of the 54g one. [link] [comments] |
~$800USD, Computer science student Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:04 AM PDT
I don't plan to purchase until late August. I can even stretch it to September. I'm in no rush. I've looked at other laptops like XPS 13/15, Dell G3, LG Gram, Lenovo Legion, Lenovo X1 Carbon, Razer, Macbook Pros. How does the HP ENVY compare to just the HP x360? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a reliable >1000 Tablet/Laptop Hybrid for a Teacher in Germany Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:26 AM PDT I'm going to be a teacher starting September and recently my Laptop broke down completely. Trying to stay ahead of the curve, I thought about getting one of those Tablet/Laptop Hybrids for class. Most of all I'm looking for reliability, I'm not really into getting a new Laptop every 2 years. So far I found: Microsoft Surface 6 for 900€ Lenovo Thinkpad X1 (2018) for 1700 € Acer Switch 5 2-in-1 for 800€ I'd love to get the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 because it seems the most reliable, but is it worth the price difference? * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Best case >1000€ but I'm absolutely prepared to pay more if it means I can reliably work with the laptop for 6+ years * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 would be great seeing as I plan to use it in class. Reliability and good battery life go here as well * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not that important. Would be nice but other things are more important * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No, neither gaming nor any kind of photo/video editing * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No gaming * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliable build quality is extremely important, no need for finger-print reader or an optical drive. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I tried some of the 2-in-1 Laptops (Lenovo Yogas) and found them quite clunky and I'm not sure if they'll hold up over time, I'd rather stick to those hybrids. Looking for a laptop with at least 16gb of ram for college and gaming, 1500$ (Canada) Posted: 03 Aug 2019 02:24 PM PDT I'm looking to buy a laptop for the upcoming school year. My budget can stretch to 1500$CAD, but I'm more comfortable at around 1300$. My course requires that I have 16gb of ram and at least a 1920×1080 display. I'd like to use it for gaming as well, but I'm looking for the most bang for my buck, if I can get away with lowers specs and a really good deal I'm okay with that. I play games like Overwatch, Stellaris, and Civ VI. [link] [comments] |
Looking for laptop for first time gamer and web browsing Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:44 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* Highest $1000 USD, but preferably less * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* Best specs, and battery life ( battery isn't too important; I know gaming laptops aren't known for their amazing battery life. Just want something that will let me sit on the couch and browse online without having to be plugged in) * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* Not really a concern * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* 15" preferred * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* gaming and online browsing * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* Overwatch, GTA, Minecraft, Sims. Not sure about settings and FPS- I haven't had a gaming laptop, so I'm not familiar with FPS or settings * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\* decent keyboard so I don't have to get a separate one to play games * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* I'm completely new to gaming; I've only played on PS4, and I wanted to try my favorite games on PC. Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:39 AM PDT budget: $2,000 (is expandable) i live in illinois best specifications for the money weight and thinness: nothing over 10-15 pounds which OS: windows screen size: big screen around 17 inches programs: video editing, gaming what games: minecraft (highest settings) and just other popular steam games requirements: bulgy keys (not too much so that it will close well) thoughts: i want a laptop with atleast 12 gb of ram and around 1tb of hard drive space [link] [comments] |
Need laptop for College, CS major Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:29 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA, <$500 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life is the top priority. At least 6 solid hrs. Best specifications for my budget would be great. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight doesn't matter much, although it shouldn't be very heavy/hard to carry * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No gaming. Light video editing occasionally. IDE's for programming. Should be fast enough for programming needs. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Touch screen NOT a must. Should have an SSD, finger-print reader AND/OR good built quality would be a plus! * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** My experience with windows laptops is not good. Had a Dell Inspiron that was slow as hell after a year of purchase. I never played any games or any demanding work. Battery life was less than 1.5 hrs on MINIMUM brightness. So i'm not sure if all windows laptops start lagging after a while, or are they just DELL inspiron models that have this issue. Although my laptop did not have an SSD. So maybe that caused it to slow down somehow. Just to make it clear, the MAIN USES are: 1-Browsing with around 50 tabs open at a time. I know that might make a laptop slow, but i honestly expected better from a quad-core processor laptop with 8GB ram(my previous laptop). 2-Programming for CS classes. Need to be efficient in these tasks. 3-Ocassional Youtube, Netflix, etc. So, the main priorities are only 2. 1- Long battery life. The maximum i can get for the specified money. Highly disliked the poor battery life, which i have come to notice in many windows laptops(including HP). 2-Shouldn't lag at all. No compromise on work efficiency. Despite having several browser tabs open all the time, while programming, compiling code, etc, it must NOT Lag. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:03 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** not really a budget but as cheap as possible and Austria * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** best specifications for the money * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** nothing * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows Home (Windows pro better) * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 14" or more * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I will probably use photo editing and games * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** League of Legends * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** WLAN: 5GHZ RAM: 8GB better 16GB idc about the touchpad SSD * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Quad-Core-Pro processor [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:02 AM PDT Looking to buy my first laptop to complement my desktop PC that I can use at uni and also use for some light to medium gaming when away from home. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around 1500$ or 15000sek, in Sweden * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Would like a dedicated graphics card if I were to buy a windows laptop. Of course I want the best specs for the money but portability and battery life is also useful since I will use it for university. Simply looking for a good balance. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Since I will be carrying it around daily it's important that it's not to heavy. Preferably less than 1.5 kgs with a screen sized around 13-14 inches. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows is what im used to but I'm willing to try a MacBook for the first time. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13-14 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Will be going to medical school so no programs, but I wish to play medium to light games, i.e Minecraft, LoL, Cities Skylines etc * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Minecraft, LoL, Cities Skylines etc, nothing to demanding. At decent settings with above 30 fps. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I want it to handle usage every day for atleast 3-4 years without any major disturbing. Good keyboard is also preferable. [link] [comments] |
Just bought Asus Vivobook15, how long will battery last? Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:53 AM PDT They are offering me to warrant the battery for 4 years for an extra 100 euros. Should I take the offer? [link] [comments] |
~$2000AUD, Computer Science student w/ minor gaming and CAD Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:44 AM PDT
Roughly $2000 AUD, somewhat loose on the price though if there's a good deal. Purchasing in Australia
Good battery life and value for money should be priorities
Low weight would be nice, as i'll be using for Uni
Windows
N/A
80% used for Computer Science degree 10% Gaming 10% CAD (SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD)
Games like Dota 2 and League I'd be keen to have a somewhat portable VR capability in future if it's within budget
Highest priority is build quality, i don't want the laptop breaking on me in 2 years.
Been looking at the MSI P65 Creator 8RE as my current best option [link] [comments] |
Good Value-for-Money Laptop Capable of Playing Modern Games in Standard Settings Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:27 AM PDT Hi everyone, title says most of it. I'm kind of looking for the "Pocophone of Laptops", a device that's got power, enough to play most modern video games smoothly, but where I do not pay for unnecessary stuff. I am mainly going to use it for streaming and surfing, but I'd love to play some games also. The reason I am not going for an onboard PC is that I'm moving around the country quite often. I do not know what the adequate price range is, but I would be comfortable paying up to around 700€, also more, if the value is good enough. Maybe you guys can tell me how much I should expect to pay. Bonus points if it is rather slim, those Laptops look awesome. Please tell me if I can give some more useful information about what I want. Thank you! Edit: here's the form

Cheap, desktop just for editing? Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:53 PM PDT Hey guys, just wanted some quick advice. Looking for a basic, cheap, desktop. I'm not big on desktops at all. But need a desktop to edit a lot of my vids (4k mostly but also some lower quality footage for vlogs) my laptop works decent but would be nice to get a cheap new (walmart, amazon type of deal) desktop. Any advice, on budget (preferably under 400 bucks or less that can basically just be used to edit vids with Adobe premiere. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
