Finally got my main rig back to high end specs! Imo, the whole Sleeper idea is sick to me, so doing builds like these is super fun!

    For the specs, we got:
    - Some old beige case I stole from a Pentium II rig
    - Ryzen 7 1700x
    - Gigabyte RTX 2080
    - 16GB of DDR4 Ram
    - 4 TB and 1TB HDDs, along with a 512GB Samsung SSD hiding in the back!
    - 3.5" Floppy Drive (which does work!)
    - LG UHD Blu-ray Drive, modified with the front plate of a 90s LG CD Drive!

Temps are surprisingly good considering the type of case that it is!

Edit: Since so many people are asking:
    Idle CPU: ~38°C
    Idle GPU: ~35°C
    Load CPU: ~62°C
    Load GPU: ~70°C

    PC build Guides August 2019

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 11:46 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I got bored and a little creative yesterday, so here's my list of builds I'd recommend for a number of budgets here at the end of summer 2019. Right now is a great time to buy, but remember; your money should go towards your real life first and foremost. The builds in my guide start at $200 and go up to $2000 POST REBATE and ONLY INCLUDE THE TOWER. I can, however recommend certain products (Keyboards, Mice, Headsets, Monitors, etc.) if you need anything in particular. If you need wifi added, pretty much just add $20 to the total. If you have any suggestions, questions, or criticisms, please let me know. If you need any help tinkering with a build or want some more direct input, my PMs are open.

With its dual core APU and 4gb of RAM, El Cheapo is definitely not the best thing to purchase on the market. However, if you need a PC for light media consumption, and running esports and indie games at 720p at low frames, this PC still manages to pack in a 120gb SSD to make it all run smoother.

A little jump in price, but with some much better performance, Balance is a solid option for media viewing and light indie, esport, or older AAA gaming. Easy to upgrade for the future and an overall solid base for anyone with a slightly larger Budget than El Cheapo.

A definite step up from Balance, but with the same SSD, Memory, and Graphics being improved by a B450 Motherboard, an extra 500gb of spinning storage, and a sharper looking case.

The same as Talent, but we take a hit to our CPU in order to gain the benefits of dedicated graphics.

Our biggest step up yet, we go from 4 to 6 hyperthreaded cores, 16gb of 3000mhz RAM, and ditch our spinning storage for 256gb of M.2 goodness.

A much shorter, but noteworthy, step, the big brother to Sturdy Boy has gained the benefits of a much more powerful GPU.

Even though you're expecting a purple Josh Brolin, you are instead met by the best price to performance machine of the lot (perfectly balanced, as all things should be). Finally, we can feel more like a Titan, as we ditch our smaller form factor for a nicer standard ATX motherboard and mid sized ATX case. We also gain the mass of a titan, with the 512gb of SSD storage combined with 2TB of spinning storage.

Beauty and power is what make up this Greek Goddess of PC love. With her AIO cooler, a high overclock is within reach, and her pristine white case will make it all even better. Top that with our most powerful GPU in the guide yet, and you have something worthy of the goddess' attention.

Lover to Aphrodite, our God of War keeps his look darker, yet similar to our God of Love. It is his brawn, however, that has changed, as he is the first to bear witness to 3rd Generation Ryzen. (Note, a BIOS flash will more than likely be necessary. You can get a kit from AMD to do it for free, last I checked).

A PC for the God of the Gods. With it's brand new X570 motherboard, a BIOS Flash is unnecessary, and it's more powerful 5700 XT will have it playing the newest games maxed out at 1080p at 120hz or more. Top it off with a larger AIO and faster RAM, we truly have lightning in a case.

No, not the one you fought in Spider-Man PS4, although just as capable. Basically combining elements from all previous builds, plus his own twist, like an 8-core 3rd Gen Ryzen 7 and 32gb of RAM, Taskmaster is here to dish out the pain and the frames.

It must be flex season, because hooo boy, you must be stacked to get this one. Featuring the faster 3800X, and a RTX 2070 Super, we have a machine not just for high-refresh rate 1440p gaming, but a beastly workstation for anything from Adobe to MATLAB. This PC is getting serious to make a girl delirious.

Apparently, you harvested all the superpowers of every last computer before it to make the strongest of them all. We may have lost some of our look, going back to a slighly cheaper case and 16gb of RAM, but we were able to increase our power with the edition of a Ryzen 9 3900X and a RTX 2080 TI to trace rays at high frame rates at 1440p and even 4k.

UPDATE: BETTER POWER SUPPLIES HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED. WILL SOON BE CREATING INTEL EQUIVALENTS FOR THE HIGH END RIGS.

I cannot thank you guys enough for helping me through this PC building journey!

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:24 PM PDT

My old setup was a cheap $500 prebuilt, an even cheaper Walmart Logitech mouse, and a very old Lenovo keyboard. So, I made it a mission to work my ass off this summer break and upgrade my entire setup. New chair, desk, headset, speakers, mouse, keyboard, and PC. This time around, I wasn't going to get a prebuilt. I wanted to make this baby with my own two hands. And after all, making your own PC is generally cheaper than prebuilts.

Boy am I glad to say that this is finally finished! This took so much time to do. I convinced my boss to give me tons of hours so that I could save up money for this. I worked over 400+ hours and even clocked 4 60+ hour work weeks. I'm pretty sure that since I'm a minor, this was illegal... but to be fair, I was the one who wanted the extra hours. On lunch breaks, I would just sit down, munch on my sandwich, and watch PC building videos. I watched multiple ones to know the ins and outs of how to do everything from choosing the parts to the actual assembly.

After getting all the parts it was still confusing. Why does my front panel connector just look like a usb 2.0 port? (I have the h500i from NZXT and they have a weird front panel connector design. Do I need to also plug in the 6 extra pins on my graphics card? Which fans should be intake and which should be exhaust? Too many questions, and with rule 4 of this sub in the way, I had to think of something else. Luckily, this sub has a Discord which I went to. There were people on there 24/7 ready to help this strugglin' boi out, perfect! It took me a total of 17 hours building, troubling shooting, testing, etc. to get this done.

I gotta say, it was totally worth it. This workstation/gaming rig could run laps around my old setup (It doesn't even take a second to load up Chrome). Absolutely Amazing!

So this is where I say thank you to everyone. I think I spoke to maybe 30 different people all the way from this sub to the Discord to get me through this journey. I wouldn't have been able to do it without you guys. You have all made this highschooler very happy!

With that, I leave you with pictures of my completed build and the specs. This was definitely the most expensive summer project I've ever had. Now stop reading this post and help another boi out.

New builder about to become the happiest man ever.. or the saddest.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:31 AM PDT

After i finish a very long 26 hour shift today, I am about to finally assemble my very first pc build. I have only owned laptops over the past 10 years, so returning to the world of desktop ownership has been long overdue.

    I am excited and terrified.

I have researched. Watched tons of build videos. And I am ready...

Hopefully I will return to this sub in 24 hrs with a photo of my new build in all its lovely glory.

Or I will return in tears, after having burnt to a crisp all my snazzy new computer parts.

Wish me luck my fellows. As I venture forth into a new land of unimaginable offerings and promise.

So first off shout out to Microcenter that place is like heaven. They legit got everything you could ever need and you could easily spend all day and all your cash in one visit. Also they already had the BIOS up to date for the 3000 chips on the B450 boards so that was clutch.

Secondly, shoutout to this sub because y'all are super helpful and you make everyone who joins the build a pc gang feel like family.

Alright the build went super smooth and the case was very easy to build in. Tons of space to hide and run cables, the side panel door is a nice touch, and it was affordable. The 3600\3600X chips are crazy good value especially with the Microcenter bundles and I would highly recommend them. Same goes for the 5700 XT the card is savage and I'm happy to support AMD because I feel like they've been on top of their game these past few years.

Also the M.2 SSD is legit. It was very easy to install and the speeds on it are crazy for the price. If you got a local Microcenter near you I recommend checking this SSD out because it's only like $80.

I was skeptical about the PSU but it has great reviews online and honestly it was the best deal my local Microcenter had. It hasn't blown up yet and I would definitely recommend it.

EVGA 2080 TI ftw3 ultra came in ultra XC box?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:53 PM PDT

Anyone know if I should be concerned about this? It's clearly the ftw3 card inside and registers as that under software, didn't know if this was a problem that can happen or if there's some shady business here

EDIT: Upon further inspection, the top half is the XC box, the bottom half is the FTW3 box, the EVGA tape was sealed and unmolested, perhaps it is just a factory error?

Hello everybody, this is my first pc build ever and I’m having a lot of trouble. I’m not very knowledgeable on this stuff, but any input you have I should be able to follow.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:39 AM PDT

UPDATE: I'm going to buy a 500 watt power supply and return it if it does not resolve the issue

UPDATE #2: Different PSU made no difference. Oof.

    My parts are: - ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4 MOBO - Ryzen 5 3600 CPU - Thermaltake smart series 600W power supply - WD 1tb HDD - MSi Radeon RX 570 Armor mk2 DirectX 12 8gb OC 256-bit GPU - Corsair Vengeance LPX 8gb (2 x 8) DDR4 3000 RAM - Kingston SSD 240gb - Fractal Design ATX mid tower white

I apologize if I've left info out, let me know if I wasn't specific enough.

I'm 99% sure everything is installed right and in the correct spots (99% sure because this is my first time and everything LOOKS good). I followed the manuals, watched many videos, even had input from friends, previous reddit and other forum posts, all to no avail. The first time everything was installed, I got the CPU and DRAM red lights with no display on the monitor. So then I just completely restarted building from the beginning, got the same lights, and it was stuck on a boot loop, turning off and on about every 10 seconds with still no display. This is what happens every time from now on I've tried turning it on. This was my last resort posting, since I've looked at every reddit post with these same issues/LED indicators. So I apologize in advance for a repetitive post. Trust me, I did not want to do this, but at this point I don't know what to do anymore and feel like giving up.

What I've done so far to troubleshoot: - Checked CPU pins for any bent/imperfect ones, then reinstalled. - Swapped both ram sticks in all 4 slots (one at a time too) and tried booting, some slots yielded different LED indicators on motherboard (the lights fluctuated between CPU, DRAM, VGA, and BOOT) but NEVER any display on monitor. Yes, the RAM sticks are currently in the priority slots. - Tried all HDMI inputs - Tried all the SATA inputs - Checked ALL pins for every input from the power supply, none are bent/imperfect. - Took out the motherboard and checked the back for any shorts. - Checked online for incompatible issues, all parts are (seemingly) compatible.

I'm feeling helpless, and a few people online have had to RMA the MOBO and use a completely different one in order to get a boot. I'm worried that is what it will come to. Please help in any way you can, and thank you for reading.

Is the 3900x the best cpu for me to play intensive strategy games while streaming?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:58 PM PDT

    Hi guys

As the titles asks, would the 3900x be the best option for me?

Strategy games tend to be a lot more cpu intensive as far as I know on a system so I'm willing to put extra into a CPU that's better equipped for Strategy games such as total war and Starcraft and the new Warcraft 3 remaster when that releases.

I'll most likely be streaming when playing these games so I'd like to take that into account.

As I've not chosen my GPU of choice yet I'm not sure whether I'll be getting a large 2K 33" display or a 27" 1440p display from MSI for playing these games on.

The other CPU's I'll be looking at are the obvious candidates of the Ryzen 3600x series and above as well as the intel i9-9900k.

I'll be going for a build that's roughly £2000 for Just the tower.

    Thank you

Please Help! Built New PC and wont boot. I am going nuts trying to solve this.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT

    Edit:

    Steps I have taken;

    1. Switched RAM slot and only put 8GB of RAM.
    2. Cleared CMOS battery.
    3. In BIOS, changed boot to UEFI boot mode only.
    4. changed SATA port to another.
    5. Boot order had two options for USB bootable drive( UEFI and drive). Chose drive this time .

And one of this has worked! PC is installing windows now. Fucking finally. Hopefully, its all good now.

So, this mobo and CPU combo had different RAM and SSD before. I am planning to sell this and downgraded to 250 GB SSD( which worked in other PC)

Now, when I turn on the PC and everything lights up and gives me a message saying peripherals were changed so press F1 to continue.

I already have bootable USB to install windows to this SSD for clean install(This bootable USB worked today morning for another PC) I can see both drives in BIOS and I change the boot order to a USB drive( I have changed SATA ports) After I click F10(save and exit), the display goes dark and nothing. PC keeps on running without display. I have to hold the power button to shut down.

Can someone tell me what else can I do please?

    New SSD not booting

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:33 PM PDT

Today I built my parents a new computer and cloned their old hard drive to an SSD of equal size using Macrium free edition. The problem I'm running into is that it won't fully boot from the SSD. It will show the Windows logo and circle of dots for a few seconds. Then, the screen goes black, but I can still move the mouse around with a loading ring on the cursor. The SSD has the same three partitions as the old drive, both in MBR.

Here is everything I've tried so far. - The partition with the cloned OS is set to active. - The SSD is set to the primary boot drive in the bios. - I tried running a repair with a Windows install disk I have, but it says it can't be repaired - I've done command line repairs using the rebuildbcd, fixmbr, and fixboot commands. - I have unplugged and replugged all my data cables in to various SATA ports on the motherboard.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for what the issue might be or other ways to fix it. I would prefer not to have to do a fresh install of Windows 10. Also, the old hard drive still boots, so it can still be used for the time being.

    Is a 360 MB/s SSD good enough in 2019?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:42 PM PDT

Quick question to get peoples opinion.

I'm currently running an old 850 evo which has slowed down to an average 360 MB/s.

I was toying with the idea of upgrading to a NVMe SSD since I'm upgrading to a new X570 mobo, Ryzen 3700x CPU, and 3200 MHz. but it seems like this would be a waste of money considering most games would still be running on old my older 4TB HDDs and the extra $100 to $200 could be spend on a better graphics card to be upgraded at a later date (currently running a GTX 980)

Building computer with my son and was wondering if 16 g of ddr4 ram is enough for gaming ?

Okay... Noctua fans really are something else! Four 140mm fans going and I just cannot hear them. Thoroughly recommend!!

A few months after building my first PC (with your help, thanks) I've realised I'm a noise freak. To begin with, I was enjoying having a windowed 750D case with some red ML140 fans, but even the slight noise they generate started to annoy me. I just finished rebuilding my PC in a Define R6 with a solid side panel and full NF-140 PWM fans throughout and the difference is genuinely incredible, with four of them (one in the cooler) going at a reasonable speed with the sides of the case open I can hear basically nothing. I was panicking I'd screwed up for a second! I thought it might just one of those fanboy things but they are absolutely astounding.

TLDR; if you're an inexperienced builder like me and have even an inkling you might be a noise freak, definitely consider some of these amazing chocolate (or black!) fans and sack off the RGB for the sake of your sanity.

How do I update mobo firmware without 2nd gen ryzen CPU? (GIGABYTE X470 AORUS GAMING 7)

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:33 PM PDT

I want to buy a GIGABYTE X470 AORUS GAMING 7 mobo for my 3700x that is coming in the mail.

I'm reading that in order to update the mobo firmware I would first need a ryzen 2nd gen CPU? Is that true?

I can't just pop in my new 3700x on a new x470 mobo and it work?
