Not even clear on what the difference between a DE and a WM is to be honest.

For some context, I'm looking to make the switch from Windows 10 to Manjaro and want to make an informed choice between Xfce, Gnome, and KDE. I'm going to make the switch along with building a new PC, so I'm also wondering what kind of specs a machine needs to do some of the fancy stuff you see people doing out there.

What is the problem with snap packages?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 04:25 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I have a question about snap packages. Why does a large part of the community not like this type of packages? I personally see them as a quick way to install programs. But I would like to know if they have a security problem or something like that. Thank you!

Where should downloaded binaries and sources go?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:27 AM PDT

Where should unofficial downloaded package files and binary archives go? The programs themselves are in /usr/local/bin but the packages and archives that contain them don't seem appropriate for /usr/local/src as they are binary archives or packages. Or is /usr/local/src still correct?

Problem installing linux on a laptop.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 08:09 AM PDT

Hi everyone, non native english speaker here, so sorry if i make some grammar mistakes and if this subbreddit is not the correct one to post this topic. I have a problem and i hope you can help me. A year ago i bought a laptopt for the university and i wanted to install linux on it so i tried Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian but i couldn´t install it. I pluged the usb in the laptop and started the machine from it, also enabled the legacy support just in case but i do not know why it didn´t work, each time i tried the laptop froze and i had to reboot it.

    My laptop specs are:

    HP Pavilion 15-cx0002ns.

    Intel Core i5 8300H 2,3 GHz.

    12 GB RAM.

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 4 Gb.

Thanks in advance, if you need more info about the laptop ask me.

    grub menu missing

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:33 AM PDT

I installed debian to dual boot with windows 7. Grub menu was working. And all of a sudden when I restarted my PC it didn't show grub menu and straight booted into windows 7. I have BIOS system and GRUB is installed on MBR partition. What could be the cause of this? How do I make the grub menu show up again?

Edit: It was working all fine for past 10 hours. It just happened now that grub menu didn't show up and booted straight into windows.

Edit2: Disabled fast boot from BIOS and pressed Shift key while booting still no GRUB.

Help! After my login Nothing works

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 04:15 AM PDT

Guys I am able to login into ubuntu without a problem but after the login I am welcomed with my empty desktop, the wallpaper and the side bar icons. Except it has missing desktop icons. The cursor is moving but no highlighting on mouse over, nothing is clickable, keyboard not doing anything (tried bringing up terminal). Even the time on the status bar doesn't update once after the boot up

    http://imgur.com/gallery/XCp60Xa

I have recently updated my Ubuntu to 19.04 (Disco Dingo). Its been dual booted with windows for quite a while, but the update was installed yesterday. I am using a Lenovo Ideapad

After the update I noticed the desktop icons are made quite large in the update (I used Bionic Beaver before this) so decided to make it a tad bit smaller (That's where I fucked up) and looked up online for help. Found a step by step post on this blog:

    http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2019/05/change-desktop-icons-size-ubuntu-19-04/

It said this tiny code would help me do so. It basically just opened a notepad where I could edit the values.

    sudo gedit /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/desktop-icons@csoriano/prefs.js

So I edited the values and changed the value of the mouse over highlighter to ZERO (because that's what was making all the icons to spread apart rather than being close to each other)

Now I am left with something like just a screenshot of my desktop with all desktop icons missing and side bar icons there. Help would really be appreciated!

    Cheers

Ubuntu keeps shutting off after login

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:20 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Just like you can read in the title my laptop keeps shutting down when i login on Ubuntu. Previously i had Ubuntu 18.04 Budgie installed on it. Then i did something wrong with the drivers and could not restore it. So i decided to switch to regular ubuntu and to delete all linux partitions and grub (luckily i did not have any important files on it). So after i removed grub and the other ubuntu partitions (swap, / and /home) i reinstalled regular ubuntu. I had made a ~50gb partition in windows on my SSD (12GB swap, 20 GB /, 20 GB /home). After installation ubuntu promted me with a window which said installation complete. Restart your computer. So i pressed the restart your xomputer button but the computer just did not turn off. I waited for 5min and it still had nkt turned off. Than i proceeded to turn it off myself by holsing the powrr button of my laptop. Then i restarted my laptop abd via grub i clicked on ubuntu. I then proceeded to login to my user account. Then i saw an ubuntu loading screen and my laptop turned off. I tried logging in multiple times but it kept turning off. I read on internet that my cpu might be getting hot. So today i ordered new thermal paste and a new ssd. (Also i monitored temps in windows but they were around 40 50 on idle) even though temps were normal i reapplied thermal paste and reinstalled ubuntu on thr same old ssd in my laptop. The same thing happened, ubuntu did not want to turn off by it self so i turned it off myself. I then restarted it and logged in and my laptop turned off again. I logged in multiple times but the same thing kept happening. Than i installed a new ssd in my laptop, reinstalled ubuntu on it, but the same thing kept happening. Ubuntu did not want to turn off, then i turned it off, turned it on, logged in and my laptop than turned off again

At this point i am really stuck and i dont know what i should do. Even though my temps were normal i reapplied thermal paste and tried installing linux on another disk but ubuntu keeps turning off after i login. Could anyone help me to diagnose the issue? I googled but i could not find anything except that the cpu temp is too high, which isnt, because i checked the temps in windows on idle and load

    Question regarding GCC optimization flags

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:37 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I was a little torn on wether to put this in a linux or a programming sub, but since I am on ubuntu I figured I might post it here... Hopefully that'll be alright :)

I am currently doing an online course, and I am currently stuck on a part where one should try out a few different optimization flags (e.g. -O0, -O3 and -Os) when compiling a c program. The application I am compiling is a gtk application utilizing a few different shared libraries.

To my question: When comparing the resulting sizes of the -O0 and -Os binaries, it appears that the -O0 binary is smaller, even though -Os should optimize for binary size (why i think it should be smaller). Is this something that is possible or have I made an error somewhere? The compilation is currently done via Eclipse (which is required for the course).

    Best regards

What should you be testing in live boot to when distro hopping?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 09:07 PM PDT

Trying out a couple distros not sure what I should be testing out or if I'm overlooking anything. Testing it as how I normally used this computer as a daily driver on Windows, wifi, sound, video

A problem I am running into is on OpenSUSE KDE where I'm trying to turn on touchpad reverse scrolling(fingers go down, page goes up) but it's not working at all. No matter if I check on uncheck the setting, touchpad scrolling direction is the same. So would that be an mouse hardware issue?

I like and dislike Linux for, what should I do?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 12:32 PM PDT

I am currently a Windows 7 user and I could not be happier with the OS I'm running, it's stable, very easy to use, hard to break anything and the UI is beautiful. Sadly it's coming to an end and also I want an OS that is not backdoored by any government for privacy reasons. I absolutely hate Windows 10 and would rather throw my PC in the ocean that "upgrading" to that garbage so that only leaves Linux. The thing is, I both like and dislike Linux. I love the idea of an open source OS that lets the user control the PC 100% compared to Windows 10 that takes away the control and privacy, sounds like Linux is perfect for me right? Well, I have tried using a few Linux distros like Mint, Ubuntu and Debian and there are a few things I just can't stand.

Firstly, installing software IMO is an absolute pain, you either use the repository and get an outdated version or download from the internet and you have to extract and install using the terminal, why is this a thing? Why on earth are you required to use the terminal on this clearly superior operating system, when on Windows, you can literally just doubleclick on the installer and it does everything for you, and someone is probably going to say "it's really not that hard" but I really just find it a pain having to use the terminal and every time I have to do so, I mess something up and remember how easy it would be if I was using Windows instead.

Another thing I dislike about Linux is the UI, now I know that you can install skins etc to customize it and I have tried to make my Linux Mint look like Windows 7 or XP but it always just ends up looking like a really bad looking clone. I remember a few years ago, there was a version of the operating system Tails that completely disguised it as Windows XP and it did a really good job doing that, why is there no such program for Linux that does this today that doesn't make it look like a bad ripoff?

I really WANT to switch to Linux, I really do, but every time I find myself trying it out, I just miss the simplicity of Windows 7, and then I end up going back anyway. But Windows 7 is going away soon and there really is no other option other than Linux if I want my PC to be my PERSONAL COMPUTER and not a device for Microsoft to exploit for money, but I don't know if Linux is really for me, I love the concept of it but I just feel like it's way more complicated than it has to be. What do you guys think I should do?

How to divide a disc into partitions

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT

Hi, I've just installed Linux Mint on my PC and chose to erase the data during the process. Right now I have a single partition with all the data, but would like to have two separate ones - one for the OS, another for my personal data. How can I do it, ideally with the help of a program with GUI?

    Question about Ubuntu 18.04

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 11:34 AM PDT

Hi, I had a question regarding Ubuntu. I notice it kind of freezes up after a while and I set up the OS for 500 GB of my disk drive. I also have 500 more to use if necessary. I do notice Spotify tends to make it freeze up. If something does freeze up, do you do something like you would on task manager such as ctrl alt del as used to on Windows? (I'm so glad I wiped it and got Linux!) Thank you.

    Wine and ubuntu 18

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 11:12 AM PDT

I'm pretty much done with Windows, but there a some programs that only run in Windows.

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 and it looks like the repos only have wine 3.x but the latest stable version is 4.x. Is it a bad practice to add repos outside of what cananonical offers? Will I just clutter to my install and run into problems down the line? Or should I always be looking to use the latest stable version of something?

    Copy changes

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 06:12 AM PDT

(Don't worry about the exact names, just the general idea.)

    Directory1 has FOLDER1, FILE1, FILE2, and FILE3.

    Directory2 has FOLDER1, FOLDER2, FILE3, and FILE4. However, its FOLDER1 has different contents than Directory1's FOLDER1.

I would like to copy over Directory2 to Directory1, so that Directory1 has EXACTLY the same contents as Directory2.

    Basically, I want to rm -r Directory1; cp -r Directory2 Directory1.

However, FILE3 is huge; copying would take an hour. Is there any way to speed up the process, knowing that some files might be the exact same?

Mounting sanity check for Arch install

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 08:55 AM PDT

I'm switching from Win10 to Arch within the next couple days, and my drive situation is a little weird. I have a 512GB ssd (faster), 1TB ssd (slower), and a 3TB spinning rust. I'm a gamer so there's going to be some large installs.

My thought at the moment is 1G /boot (efi), 50G /, and the rest to /home on the 512GB. Mount the 1TB to /mnt/1tb, and the normal hdd to /mnt/3tb for media/swap file and possibly moving /var and /tmp to later. Games would be split between /home on the 512 and /mnt/1tb (along with VM's).

Is this a poor design? I thought about just mounting the 1TB to /home but then I think I'd be wasting a lot of space on the faster ssd. I could mount the remaining part of the 512 somewhere else (/mnt/games?) but that seems convoluted.

How To Find Hardware Specifications On Linux

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 07:50 AM PDT

Is this possible to delete the working partition of your linux distro and still keep operating?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:47 AM PDT

Lets say you delete both your boot and system partition with fdisk and create two new partitions without formatting them to any filesystem and somehow still keep operating? Even able to acess all files on operating system. How is that even possible since there is no filesystem?
