Why is Fedora still pulling from 29 repos after updating to 30 Posted: 18 Aug 2019 10:38 AM PDT Hi, Im not normally a Fedora user, but I needed their arm64 minimal iso for my rpis. I updated the first one I set up last night and installed Fedora 30 fresh on another, I wanted to keep them both the same, however the repos didn't change on the one I updated and my packages are stuck between old and new. I followed this https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DNF_system_upgrade and I dont know what to do now, I find Fedoras documentation a little confusing. Due to this I am still on the f29 kernel, but everywhere except the packages says Im on f30. Here is what happens when I run dnf upgrade --refresh [link] [comments] |

Unfortunately I cannot find this video, so I decided to ask here, maybe someone is using similar workflow. [link] [comments] |
GTK3 - Is it possible to disable bold fonts? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 11:57 AM PDT For context: I use a bitmap font that only has 1 variant, so that means there's no native bold font, and therefore the forced-bold text looks ugly. [link] [comments] |
linux borke my windows installation PLEASE HELP me fix it Posted: 18 Aug 2019 11:55 AM PDT right now my computer won't boot at all except on installation USB drives I am a Windows power user and a total Linux noob who wants to switch to Linux over time please advise me on possible solutions and where to get the debug info you'll need thank you for the help so far the story windows was installed for a year before i tried linux i use windows across 2 drives and i wanted to switch to linux without affecting my current installation so i got a new ssd for linux i played about installing a few different distros and desktop environments and fiddling with the settings to find one i like, in between the experiments i would boot back into windows to use my computer as normal. i had settled on manjaro kde and was getting used to it then one time the "leave" (for shutdown, restart, etc) button did nothing a terminal shutdown command (i googled how) also did nothing so i unplged and afterwards nothing would boot. when i try to boot to windows i see the folloing screen: when i use lsblk on live media: when i tried using a bootable windows USB to repair my installation: the automatic troubleshooter just said that it was unable to find the problem using cmd diskpart i found out that my drive letters had been jumbled so i rearranged them to have the correct letters but the trouble shooter had the same output afterwards storage drives I have: Kingston A1000 240 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive (this was my windows C drive) Seagate SV35 Series 2 TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive (this was my windows D drive for media and game library) Adata XPG SX8200 Pro NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB (this was my Linux install destination, manjaro KDE) other components in case it's useful: Intel Core i5-8600K 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ASRock Z370 Killer SLI ATX LGA1151 Motherboard EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB GAMING Video Card Crucial 4 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory [link] [comments] |

The My questions: 1) Is anyone aware of a way to actually remove these outputs? 2) Was it running Specs: The Quadro controls the external outputs directly. They are not passed to the Intel GPU to my knowledge. I'd prefer to just not use the Quadro for output at all, but that's life I guess. If you're aware of some way to avoid using the GPU at all, please let me know! [link] [comments] |

Best Practice when using Python and Bash Posted: 18 Aug 2019 09:20 AM PDT I'm building a simple program that configures unix systems how I like them. Shell scripts make a ton of sense for things like organizing my home directory and importing my dotfiles, but I want to use python for things like parsing files into data structures to take action on. I'm curious what the preferred way of using both python and bash in a project is? Or if it's straight up just a bad idea to mix them. Also, is there any standard or wisdom onwhich should I use to launch the program? [link] [comments] |
Installed Elementary OS and now PC won't boot Posted: 18 Aug 2019 09:12 AM PDT Never used Linux before, bare that in mind. I mounted the ISO onto a USB drive, used Gparted to free up 30GB on my SSD in which windows is installed. Then installed Linux onto said partition. Got a message saying yay successful you must reboot. Now my PC is stuck in an infinite loop of failing to boot, just bringing up the ASUS logo, turning off, and on again. The only way I can get it to start is to put Windows above Ubuntu in the boot order. Help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to test if RAM is faulty? Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:51 PM PDT I'm worried my ram sticks may be defective. Is there a way to test them. I know some ubuntu distros have memtest or something in the grub menu, but Solus (what I'm running right now) doesn't. Is there a comprehensive test I can run on my ram to make sure that nothing si wrong there? [link] [comments] |
Boot multiple distros from external SSD? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 08:44 AM PDT Hi, I'm recently new to Linux but coming from a macOS background, I like the look and feel of Linux, and it's very powerful. I bought an external SSD and installed Kali for pentesting, but I'm interested in installing Mint along side it. I'd like to configure a boot loader which lets me select the distro when the SSD is plugged in. All I can find is Refind Boot Manager and it seems a bit complex to setup - https://medium.com/@manujarvinen/setting-up-a-multi-boot-of-5-linux-distributions-ca1fcf8d502 If I follow that guide, would I have the choice to boot into the desired Linux distro? Do I have to use GParted? Would I loose any of my Kali configuration? (Bit of a pain installing keyboard/touchpad drivers) It's worth noting that I installed Kali on the SSD via Kali Live USB, and I don't need to hold the option key when booting the Mac - it boots straight into Kali when the SSD is plugged in. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Laptop only boots with acpi=off, but doesn't turn off properly or install Linux Posted: 17 Aug 2019 06:11 PM PDT Hi, Laptop is a RTX 2070 HP OMEN 17 with GSYNC. There is no intel GPU. (i7 9750h, 256GB SSD+1TB HDD, latest Bios version F.11-Rev A) I'm trying to install Linux, and I've tried latest Ubuntu 18.04.3 and Manjar0 18.0.4 KDE and gnome. Setting nouveau.modeset=0 does not really have an effect on anything. Simply turning acpi off allows me to boot. I'm trying to boot from USB made with GPT/UEFI with Rufus. Ubuntu without acpi=off: Ubuntu loading screen appears, with tons of ACPI errors in the back. "Disabling event", "bios error(bug) couldn't get xxxxxx". It just stays stuck at loading and I cannot even switch to another Tty. Forced to reset. Ubuntu with acpi=off: Ubuntu boots successfully from USB, but grub-efi-amd64-signed fails to install. (??? Unrelated to my graphics) This happens when there is no EFI partition, which is not true, I do have one. I tried to install grub manually by chrooting, but that did not work out either. Power off or reboot doesn't work. It shows me System Halted at the end and remains stuck there. I'm forced to hold the power button to reset it. Download updates during installation option was turned on. Turning it off also did not make a difference. I used driver=nonfree for manjaro. Manjaro without acpi=off:" While booting from usb, I get a ",failed to unmount /run/miso/bootmnt" (something like that) and a series of "failed to unmount, invalid argument" after that. Forced to reset. Manjaro with acpi=off:" Boots into manjaro successfully and seemingly installs properly. But again, does not reboot or shutdown. After resetting, by now I'd reset many many times while trying to install manjaro/Ubuntu. My BIOS died and I had to reseat the battery. I don't have the tools anymore and cannot to afford to do that again. I'm quite sure the reboot/shutdown issues are dude to acpi (Since it's hardware-control related, I'm assuming it's not able to find the right command/signal to poweroff properly. Just guessing) I don't want to damage anything, it's brand new, so I'm super afraid :( Linux version on Ubuntu was 5.0, manjaro I did not check. What should I do? Wait for Ubuntu 20.04 to come with Linux 5.10 something so that it properly supports my hardware or something? Please help! Thanks a lot! [link] [comments] |
Is it a good idea to start from scratch If I really mess up upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04 Posted: 18 Aug 2019 07:30 AM PDT I was doing a python project and I needed to update a few modules, such as Numpy and Pandas. So I upgraded Ubuntu from 16.04 to 18.04 and I think that I did something horribly wrong at the purple screen. I think one of the options I chose was to have the new version without creating the backup. I think there was a part that said no entry about artful, but I have no clue what that is or if this is relevant. Anyways, I can't even execute certain commands. If i type in It will say something along the lines of ModuleNotFoundError. Is there any way to clean up a lot of the broken crap quickly To make sure things are easier when the next versions get released, what are the best practices with package management, and organization in general so I don't have to. TL;DR: !) Should I just start over and wipe everything that's not important and reinstall ubuntu. and 2) I suck at managing dependencies. What is the most comprehensible resource to learn more about it [link] [comments] |

Stuck here at boot, need help. Posted: 18 Aug 2019 07:02 AM PDT |
Posted: 18 Aug 2019 03:08 AM PDT While trying to install Manjaro Gnome edition I've run into an issue. Booting the liveUSB with free drivers results in this sort of jumbled up screen as you can see here, and nonfree drivers won't boot at all. The UI is not responding to most inputs and the system will automatically reboot after about a minute of this. My system:
I've tried the setup on lower resolution monitors and with just one screen plugged in. I have also tried using the KDE edition of Manjaro and even the latest Ubuntu 19.04, All of which result in the same flickering and automatic reboot, if I can even get to the desktop. My main install of Windows 10 works without any issues so I don't suspect failing hardware. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Aug 2019 06:25 AM PDT Hello, i have voyo vbook A1 with ubuntu 18.04.3 fresh install. My problems: 1. The touch screen working but only on small area of the screen (on Windows the touch screen has no problems). 2. The touches are inverted, when i touch the upper of the screen the bottom reacts same with left and right. I read plenty of sources to fix that problem but with no luck. Example: https://askubuntu.com/questions/929639/ubuntu-touchscreen-on-voyo-vbook-v3 I edited xorg.conf.d folder every file but no luck.. Finally made it work i will post a tutorial about it [link] [comments] |
What software do you used to create 3d models for 3d printing Posted: 18 Aug 2019 02:09 AM PDT I'm looking for some 3d modelling software so I can learn to make 3d models, export as an stl file and 3d print. Ideally something that's well known, has plenty of documentation and maybe also runs on a windows platform? Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
LibreOffice flatpak dark theme? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 05:40 AM PDT Hi, I am on Debian Buster KDE and have installed LibreOffice 6.3.0.1 via flatpak. My understanding of theming on flatpak is that the default is Adwaita and it will conform to your system-defined theme if you install the corresponding theme from flatpak as well. However, on KDE, I have already set GTK2 and GTK3 application styles to Breeze-Dark and installed org.gtk.Gtk3theme.Breeze-Dark from flathub, but to no avail. Any tips? Thanks in advance. I could use the version in the repositories but it is 6.0 so it doesn't support the groupedbar-compact layout I prefer. [link] [comments] |
Running Samba in my workstation? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 05:23 AM PDT I'm a computer science student who recently got a very good deal on a 4 year old desktop computer. I already have a ThinkPad, but I'd like to use both for my work. I'm trying to figure out how to get the most bang for my buck with these machines, and one idea was to run a Samba file server on the desktop. So, r/linux4noobs, is this a good idea if I intend to also use this computer for programming, etc? I'd like to be able to have network storage, do backups and, if feasible, make some data available outside my LAN. [link] [comments] |

Best way to backup Windows install (not data) before replacing it with Linux? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 05:12 AM PDT I've been dual-booting Windows (8.1) and Linux (Solus) for a while and always find myself going back to Windows as it feels more comfortable. So I've decided to wipe Windows. However I would like a backup of my current Windows installation in case of emergency. Windows is currently installed on my SSD (with its own efi boot partition and a system reserved partition) while all my data is on my regular HDD. I have a 2 TB external HDD with a partition the same size as my SSD I can use for my backup. Ideally I would like the backup process to be fast (although I guess I could leave it running overnight) and most importantly easy to restore. I'm particularly worried about being able to boot Windows after restoring my backup. What is the best way to proceed? I've read so much about dd, partclone, ntfsclone, fsarchiver, clonezilla etc. in the last few days that I fear I no longer see the forest for the trees. My first idea was to use dd to backup my entire SSD to the partition on my external HDD, but I'm unsure whether dd can be used to write an entire disk to a partition. Wouldn't that destroy the partition table of my external HDD? Or would I just have two partition tables - one at the start of my external HDD and one at the start of my backup partition? Any help is appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
