Which of these SSD is faster in a laptop?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 11:51 AM PDT

I came across two models of a laptop, asked the brand support about the differences between them and apparently it's only the SSD.

    ................

    First model:

    256GB

    SSD Protocol: SATA3

    SSD Data Rate: 6Gbps

    Second model:

    512GB

    SSD Protocol: PCIE

    SSD Data Rate: 32Gbps

    ................

Which of these SSD is better?

Also, why is the second model cheaper than the first one?

Today I bought Helios 300 from local store and have some problems

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 01:06 PM PDT

My laptop came with windows not installed, so I went through trouble and installed it myself, everything went fine except when trying to install nVidia drivers, it says "nVidia installer cannot continue, This nVidia graphics driver is not compatible with this version of windows. This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware"

I checked dxdiag and it doesn't read my nvidia graphics card.

also I don't have predator sense software it just didn't come with my laptop, though I tried downloading a few, I couldn't find the one compatible with my (2019) helios 300

    this is my last resort

if anybody could help me with those stuff it'd be highly appreciated

Soldering GPU and VRAM onto a laptop

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 07:52 AM PDT

Soldering GPU and VRAM onto a laptop

Is it (theoretically) possible to solder a GPU and some VRAM chips onto a laptop whose motherboard has an NVIDIA BGA908 solder "socket" and GDDR3 DRAM chip solder socket and have it functional?

The center part is missing a GPU and VRAM.

Whats the best online store for laptops in you guys opinion?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 07:28 AM PDT

Will this be enough for an engineering student? Around 770 dollars. It's in Hebrew but I believe you'll understand the specifications. Comes with warranty of 3 years, a bag and Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard 850

    USA $800- $1000

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 10:25 AM PDT

    • **$800 United States of America

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Prefer decent battery life. I am doing a bunch of online research, Microsoft excel, Adobe PDF stuff, etc. etc.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Ive been using a mid 2012 macbook pro since mid 2012, so these things aren't important to me

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Prefer windows now (don't have a choice with the formatting of my school work). I absolutely have ZERO tolerance for bloatware. That being said, If I have to purchase a laptop from an excellent trustworthy seller on Ebay to avoid all the nonsense bloat ware, I will do just that. I'm naturally inpatient as it is, bloatware automatically pisses me off. Also, I don't want to have to worry about viruses…..

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" minimum

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. NO

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD, Plenty of ram, NO BLOATWARE, exceptional anti virus software, USB input, HDMI? (not necessary)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not having to deal with bloatware and naggy anti virus software are at the top of my list. I remember switching to apple because of these two reasons. I have been so happy with my choice. Now I am being forced to go to a windows computer. Its giving me anxiety because of what I remember what it was like owning a PC years ago, I had to constantly fight off viruses and ads and wait for bloatware. Like it was literally always something wrong all the time every time I used it. I was on secured home wifi also. I hope I can find what I'm looking for. Thank you.

    Suggestions for an Engineering Student?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 10:22 AM PDT

Preferably less than $1000 USD. Mostly for schoolwork and maybe some super light gaming but nothing crazy. I don't really know anything about laptops so I was just wondering where I should start.

I'm lost in picking a new laptop.

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 01:48 PM PDT

I'm new to posting here so mods, if this isn't the right place for this, then feel free to take it down.

So, It's the start of a new Uni semester for me, and I'm completely lost as to what I should be looking for. In particular, I have no clue how to parse cpu brands, and so comparing them has been a headache.

I can't make heads or tails of them, and while thinking on that, I realize I'm hilariously uninformed of my options. I was thinking I would get myself a chromebook, as that is what I had been using before, but should I?

My desires are as follows. I spend an hour and a half commuting into uni both ways each day, and furtheremore I have a lot of reading to do. I would like something I can pull out on the bus, preferably flip into a tablet and read whatever I have loaded up to read while I ride the bus. That and a word processor. I vastly prefer an actual keyboard to type.

Other than that, I would like something that can load web pages fast ish, and that works as a word processor. I have the money for something beefier, but I would prefer to err on the side of cheap since, like I said reading on the bus its liable to break.

I was thinking this one but, like I said, I have no fucking clue how good the cpu is, every discussion of these things are in reference to each other, so I can't get a grip on if its decent or not. It looks appealing, light, converts into a tablet, the stylus is a welcome albeit not massively desired addition.

Then there's the bigger question of why Chrome OS? Like, I don't want a gaming laptop out of this, A) I have a beastly enough gaming pc B) I want to use this for work so loading on more possible distractions isn't a good idea, and C) I want something small to carry around with me while running around campus and back and forth across the city, but beyond that, is windows better in other ways?

I am so lost, and could use the help of someone more experienced who actually knows what the hell they are doing.

    Lenovo Y530 Thermal Pads thickness

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 09:47 AM PDT

I'm planning on replacing the thermal paste on my Lenovo Y530 as soon as the warranty runs out, and I thought why not also replace the thermal pads for some better ones?

Problem is, I don't know their thickness and browsing amazon you will find pads ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm (the most common). Do any of you know the thickness of the several pads used in the Y530 cooler?

I know it's a long shot but I decided to ask anyway since I haven't found an answer on google yet.

TL:DR: Thickness of Y530 thermal pads?

    HP Omen 15 2019 differences

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 12:12 PM PDT

I see for 2019 there are 2 different chassis for the Omen 15. One has red accents in the back that form an X with a red head logo, and port selection in the back, the other looks much more subdued with just a grey head logo but ports only on the side. Everything else is the same. Anyone one of why this difference exists?

Which ultrabooks have the most durable hinge design?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 12:11 PM PDT

Tried to repair my zenbook hinges after they broke, and I noticed how the screen was held onto by 6 tiny screws, 2 tiny arms, and a little bit of glue. Apparently the zenbook hinges are known to break a lot. The mounting of the hinges on the base side have also completely tore off the plastic mounting points.

Most of the laptops nowadays are thin and light. Which manufacturers that reenforce their laptops hinges to make them break less?

    Matebook D w/ AMD Ryzen or Matebook X w/ i5 7200u?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 10:42 AM PDT

    Hello folks.

I'm due to purchasing a new laptop, which shall be useful for university related activities such a document editing and MS office general use and photo editing with Adobe PS, Lightroom and other dedicated software.

I was looking for a sturdy, light and portable laptop with a monitor with great colour accuracy, snappy performance, decent battery life (even moderate is OK, I'm not a heavy user). I've read the Matebook X (2017 model) falls a bit behind in terms of connectivity, as many useful ports have been sacrificed for the sleek and minimal thickness of the device. However it comes with an adaptor for USB-A/VGA/HDMI/LAN. I don't play games nor interested in graphic works.

A matebook D with Ryzen costs around €550 on Amazon.

I've got offered a used Matebook X i5 7200u with 1 month warranty left for the same price.

Hard decision, could you please give your 2 cents on regards? Thanks!
