Looking for a powerful laptop for 3D renders, animation.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:00 AM PDT

I will be moving out to university soon and I need a powerful laptop since I'll be working with 3D stuff and animation quite a lot. I would also love to use it for gaming from time to time when I'm free.

I am looking for a laptop that could easily run other programs in the background while I'm rendering my work.

Budget is not in my mind since I need a great laptop and I am willing to splurge if needed.

Your help and suggestions would be much appreciated! (just please no Apple laptops, tried them, hated them)

Need help choosing between two laptops

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:18 AM PDT

I don't know much about laptops but I've narrowed my choice down to two. I'll be using it mainly for photoshop/photo editing, university work, and will play a few basic games like Sims 4.

    I'm choosing between:

HP Envy x360 13" - AMD Ryzen 7 Quad Core, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 Graphics for £849

    HP Envy 13" - i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics for £749

I've never had an AMD laptop before, so I'm cautious about how good they are. I'm leaning towards the Envy but would like some more informed opinions before making the jump.

    Thanks!

I've seen these little screen dell laptops used at my work place but I don't know the model name, they're about 11 inch screens small and can work the full office suite . I think they have a normal hdd too. Can anyone recommend these models, Id need one for basic word docs but has longevity for a year or two.

    Thanks in advance.

Am I making the right decision?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:11 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I need help with my final decision. After over a month of hard research, the Huawei Matebook X Pro stand out to me the most. It has an appealing well built design and the specifications are great (I think). They are...

    i7 855U CPU 4 cores 16 GB DDR3 RAM Geforce MX150 graphics Windows 10 Home Approximately 8 hours battery

Personally I feel that it's a good laptop and it has good reviews. However before I make the final decision I'd like any opinions on it. It feels quite expensive (£1395) and I'm not sure whether its worth it.

Il be using the laptop for web activities, microsoft office applications and lots of demanding adobe software such as photoshop and indesign. I want it to last a long time and I need it to be perfect for the price that it is.

Is this laptop worth it, or should I be considering others?

new laptop for college + some games

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:43 PM PDT

I'm looking for a light and portable laptop that can get me through college while running a few games, especially Minecraft, at a decent fps. I'm returning a MacBook Pro 13 that I got recently as I'm finding it overheats a lot and doesn't feel powerful enough for what I payed. I'd love some recommendations for what laptop would work for me as I'm struggling to find one myself ://

With the MacBook costing around £1400, I would be prepared to pay about that but preferably a bit lower!

    External graphics card

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:56 AM PDT

First off thanks for your time and expertise. I recently bought a Lenovo yoga 730-15IWL with i7-8565U and 12 GB ram (the price was too good to pass up as my old laptop was outdated). I am primarily a console player, but am interested in learning pc gaming, haven't played pc games much in the last 15-20 years. Out of the box it runs older games like TA-Kingdoms no problem, but I am looking to play more contemporary titles. Rust is one specific example. I am curious as too whether or not I can use an external graphics card. I believe they require thunderbolt enabled devices, and does my laptop qualify as such? If this is an option for me, what do you suggest for an enclosure and graphics card. Budget isn't an issue up to maybe $1000. I am not currently interested in buying a desktop for space constraints, and do not want to buy a second laptop for gaming. I understand that both of these are probably a better option for most people. Again thank you for your time and expertise.

HP Spectre x360 15, broken chassis from fall

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:43 AM PDT

I have busted the corner of my HP Spectre by dropping the laptop onto hard surface, and it appears some internal parts are also bent from the fall. The screen is also slightly bent. I cannot open the laptop screen into tablet mode as the hinge is warped.

Here are images of the damage: https://imgur.com/a/M3H49DB

I don't have any damage coverage on this laptop. What can I do? Can I send this to HP for a repair? I got this laptop in November 2018, so it's not old.

Can you help explain the recommendations my college has for laptops to me? (Computer Science).

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:24 PM PDT

So I'm going back to school for computer science and need a new laptop. During my first degree (metallurgical engineering) we were given laptops, Fujitsu tablet PCs. I've had mine for almost six years and it most definitely needs replaced but it served me well during my time in school. I programmed on it, used software we needed for school, and did some photo editing with photoshop and Lightroom.

The recommendations from my new college for a laptop is as follows: intel core i7, 2.8 GHz or faster, 16GB RAM, and 500 GB or larger hard disk. They also say that if the laptop I choose offers a discrete or add in graphics card to add that to the system.

I'm pretty certain the machine I had before was i5, so i don't exactly understand why i need i7. I also don't understand the graphics card part. If anyone could help explain a little about what the different is and why i need these features that would help me in my laptop search.

Need advice on laptop for music production.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:26 AM PDT

Hi I try to search advice before i bought a laptop for music production.

I actually produce on a windows desktop after I switched from a macbook pro in 2016. I dont record audio, i mainly use VST and Ableton with a scarlett 2i2 ( first gen ) as an external audio card.

I have few options and Im a bit lost so I need your advices and experience :

    • (Used) Macbook pro Retina 15" mid-2015 for 900 €

    i7 4870HQ 2.5 ghz Quad Core

    16 Go Ram

    512 SSD

    2Go DGPU

    • MSI GF63 Thin 9SC-472FR 1200 €

    i7 9750H 2.6 Ghz 6 cores

    16Go Ram

    512 SSD

    4Go DGPU

    • Razer Blade Stealth 13" - 1300 €

    i7 8565U 1.8 Ghz 4 cores

    16Go Ram

    256 SSD

    4Go DGPU

Concerning the Macbook Pro, it dont have recent hardware, but it still can run pretty well my current worklow.

My current CPU on my desktop ( an i5 4th generaiton ) has lower geekbenchmark and I can run Ableton Live 10 pretty well ( except some random crash with some VST time to time ).

The main reason I think to go back with Apple is CoreAudio, stability and efficiency. You start your laptop, and you are ready to produce. No hidden process in the background, no hidden app who collected data, or hide Ads in your system. It's "pure".

Concerning Windows Laptop, They seems pretty good, the specs are really powerfull, but i'm afraid of DPC latency for audio. I didn't read trash reviews concerning Razer and MSI, they seems to be appropriate for music production, but Windows laptop are like lottery for Audio.... so I don't want to regret my investissement.

    • Concerning SSD Capacity, it's not a problem for me, i already have an 1TO SSD ready to be used as an external disk.

    • concerning Screen size, I don't really care, 15 " is better but I plan to use the laptop with one or two external display when working.

Edit : there also the option to buy the 2019 Macbook pro with decent spec, but it starts around 2000€ to get at least 16Go Ram and 256Go. AND it has this horrible touch bar and just Thunderbold I/O ... not really my thing to drop money on recent Apple politics.

Thanks in advance for any advice
