Rack mountable gigabit capable router suggestions

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:04 AM PDT

    Hi all -

Looking for recommendations for a (preferably) rack-mountable router that can handle a gigabit Internet connection from my ISP. I purchased the Ubiquiti Edgerouter 12p without realizing it wouldn't be able to power my 3 Ubiquiti NanoHD access points - so will likely be returning that. Ideally the router would be less expensive than that one - but I'd rather spend a little more and not have to buy additional devices down the road.

Router: ?? Ubiquiti ER-X is an option I suppose, but it's not rack mountable (that I can tell) and looks like its throughput is ~957 Mbps. Not sure if I'd actually get ~1000 -> ~1024 Mbps from my ISP in reality anyhow so that's probably not a big deal. Looking for suggestions though on others that might have a little higher throughput max and be rack mountable. In the Ubiquiti line looks like I'd have to go w/ a ER-Pro8 to get 1.4 Gbps and be rackmountable, but the $400 price tag is a bit higher than I was looking to spend on just a router. Definitely open to other brands / suggestions.

Switch: Currently looking at either getting this Netgear 26 port PoE+ switch, this 16 port unmanaged Netgear PoE+ switch or the Ubiquiti UniFi 16 (150W). Thoughts?

I'd also be up for an "all in one" device like I thought the Edgerouter 12P was going to be for me, if it could support the NanoHD access points and had at least 8 ports (and was preferably rack mountable)

    Home Ethernet Wiring Project

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:26 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right sub for this, but I was hoping for some advice.

I'm thinking about running cat-6 to 4 rooms in the house. There would have to be a significant amount of wire running sideways, so I've been assuming that I'd need to make holes through the studs. I was thinking of making a hole in the drywall beside each stud the cable would need to run through and drilling with a right-angle or flexible attachment, but I want to hear if there's a better way to go about it.

My next concern is avoiding mains wiring while doing this. I've seen stud finders with live wire locating functionality, is it safe to rely on this, or is there another tool I should use?

Finally, is there such a thing as a patch panel you can insert into the wall? I'm thinking 2 connections to each room, so that would be 8 cables running from where the modem and router are located. The smart TV, Apple TV, and AVR are currently using Wi-Fi, and I think they can stay that way. I've thought about installing a 2-gang, 8- or 12-port wall plate where the internet comes in, and feeding the connection from the switch into there. Any reason why that wouldn't work?

Internal network becomes insanely slow and drops speeds down to zero very often, ~20 devices on an AirPort Extreme

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:10 PM PDT

Would subnetting help this out? I'm not too sure how to go about it either way.

It's to the point where ssh will be unusable and I won't be able to load even basic webpages.

The only modification I have is a pihole running on a raspberry pi, but that shouldn't affect the network at all. I also have a disk plugged in the router for file access (until I get a dedicated nas), though I'm not sure why that would make a difference.

    Modem and Router for Xfinity

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:08 PM PDT

    Hello,

I just got Xfinity internet up to 60 mbps plan. I'm looking to get my own separate modem and router.

I found this modem on Amazon with good reviews: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019ZY1ZWS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1JCDPLP2335KA&psc=1

Do you think this one is alright for 2 people?

    What router would you recommend?

I was wondering why the large price difference between these two routers

Cell coverage on the 10th floor?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:01 AM PDT

Where I live (not America) in my apartment I get just enough speed for Netflix. I get about 2.5 megabits down and less than that for upload according to Ookla Speedtest.

I just want a little boost and at least better signal in the bathroom of my studio apartment so I can reliably use reddit while pooping.

Any consumer level products I can buy? Maybe dangle something out the window down to the 4th floor where the speeds are better (ground floor I can get up to 100 megabits down)

    Looking for a hardwired router

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:04 PM PDT

I just moved in, and am getting ready to wire my home with cat6. I get 1gbps/35mbps, and have the Netgear Cable Modem CM1000. I am looking at getting a wired router, to run to my switch, and would like to create a mesh wifi in my home.

Ubiquiti looks like they provide a lot of wired routers, but if I am going to be buying Ubiquiti I would want to be able to support Unifi, so I might have to grab the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway. Anyone more knowledgable on Ubiquiti and Unifi want to lend me a hand? I've only done 30 minutes of blog reading and searching this sub so far.

I am going to be running a homelab essentially, and am okay with buying used if that is needed. Buying into branding doesn't matter too much, just quality products.

Wondering if I should get a new router

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:12 AM PDT

I have a Linksys E2500 router right now and it has been a good for over 8 years of use, but we are getting more items in the household that are online and I know technology changes year by year. I have wondered if I should upgrade my router for the last couple years and wondered is it worth it. I have done some research and found routers such as the Asus AC2900 to fall into what my budget would be. Is it worth spending the money on a new router like this or will it perform the same as my router I already have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Autossh port Forward keeps going "stale" I guess I would call it.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:41 PM PDT

I have a plex server which I like to access when not home, and share. However, my ISP uses Carrier-Grade NAT so I do not have a public IP.

To get around this I have a VM hosted by digital ocean, which does have a public IP. Then from my plex server, I run this command in a screen (https://linux.die.net/man/1/screen)

    autossh -M 25570 -nNTv -R 0.0.0.0:32400:localhost:32400 user@digitalOceanVM

Which tells the publicIP machine to forward all requests for port 32400 to my server.

This works, for a long time, until it doesn't. Autossh is supposed to restart the ssh command automatically if it stops, and does not report any issues itself.

Just before posting this I had to reboot the entire offsite VM to resolve.

What was weird to me, is as soon as I entered the command reboot now, it started working instantly. Worked until pings dropped as it shutdown.

This tells me it has to be something getting stuck/hung/stale on the VMs side. How can I look for what it is?

It has once again stopped working just as a type this. When it is failing nmap -p 32400 to the host shows open, and on the host netstat -aln shows it is listening on 0.0.0.0:32400

I did run tcpdump port 32400 before the reboot and saw traffic occurring, but the http requests never return. When it is failing it does so from multiple client sites.

    edit:

Ive found now that when it gets hung it appears via netstat there are several sockets in a CLOSE_WAIT state. To resolve this last time, I killed the PID of those sockets. 3 of which were CLOSE_WAIT, one established, and one listen, all the same PID and all the sshd command, then restarted the sshd command from the local server. Not sure what to do with this information.

    TP-Link Deco M9 Slow Speeds

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:22 PM PDT

    Hey All,

Picked up a TP-Link Deco M9 Plus system on sale through Costco a couple months ago and figured it looked like a good inexpensive mesh setup for my gig fiber home network until something a bit more tested comes out supporting WiFi6.

Been nothing but disappointed with it though. Coverage is fine, but nothing on my network seems to hit over 250mbps, even with the PPPoE and routing being handled by my EdgeRouter Lite 3. The ERL sees 850mbps at the ISP demarc, but the Deco main unit only hits 580, and the downstream loss is noticeable from there.

I'm in a single family home with very little in the way of interference, and the same devices were hitting 650mbps routinely on the same connection using the Xyzel CenturyLink Modem. Devices are all at least 2x2 AC mimo, so I'm not sure why the resulting speeds are so dismal.

Any suggestions before I return the Deco?

Constant modem reboots a day, but why?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:53 PM PDT

I've got a 2 year old NetGear surfboard modem and an Arris router that have worked solid since I got them except over the last 6 months.

I would ocassionally have to reboot the modem maybe once a month. In the last 6 months It's greatly increased to about 3 times a day. It works however, this always fixes it but why do I have to do this? My ISP said it's my modem and want to charge me to come test it.

Are there any tests I can run on my hardware to make sure it's my stuff vs the isp?

Can someone tell me what this is and what cable I need to get to enable a wired internet connection?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:51 PM PDT

Hi! I just moved into a new house for school and without looking close enough at what appeared to be an Ethernet connection I ended up getting the wrong cable. An Ethernet cable was too big, but I'm having trouble figuring out firstly what this wallplate is and what 2 cables work with it. I'm thinking it may be at AT&T Uverse? All I want to do is be able to run an internet connection from it to my desk top pc. Are there any cables that will do this or is this plate used for something else entirely (I.E. telephones)?

    Packet Loss Issues!

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:40 PM PDT

    Hey All!

I have a packet loss issue that has been giving me quite a headache recently.

I started noticing this yesterday. I a MMO game I play, the in game network settings kept reporting an upload packet loss of ~1-5%. Naturally I decided to ping the server through cmd prompt [ping -t 52.55.0 -l 2048]. I noticed that I was getting around the same packet loss, ~3%.

I am by no means qualified to figure out what is going on here. Can anyone guide me through how I should debug this? I know there are a million possibilities that could cause this issue.

    Some specs if needed:

    CPU - i7700k

    MoBo - ASrock Taichi Z270

I did all the basic stuff I could think of.

Reboot modem and router and PC Update router firmware, mobo BIOS CAT 6 wired connection. Thanks in advance!

Please help me figure out why my router isn’t playing nice with my modem

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:03 PM PDT

    Modem: Netgear CM1200

    Router: Linksys EA6500

Just got a new modem for the router I've had for a while. I hooked them up for the first time tonight, and had everything working fine. The WiFi worked great.... for 10 minutes. Then it dropped and I haven't been able to get it back up.

I've hooked up my computer and game console via hardline powerline adapter to the modem, and the modem seems to be working fine. In the router interface I keep getting the "router not found: you're not connected to your router" error.

I just set this up by myself tonight to get rid of the recurring modem rental charge, and since the WiFi isn't working my fiancé is very unhappy. Please help. The fate of our marriage depends on it. (Just kidding, though he is very grumpy).

    Edit: internet provider is Comcast

Is there a magic way of combining two internet connections?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:39 PM PDT

My area sucks. The DSL speed can only be 10Mb up. However I can get cable connection that does 100Mb up. But I don't want to use cable downstream because the latency is not good enough for gaming especially during the peak time. Is there a solution to this? If I buy both connections, is there a way to use both? I can't just set my gaming computer to just one connection because they all have to be on the same subnet (for shared service etc).

How do I set up my MoCA adapter if my internet comes in over coax?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:53 AM PDT

I just moved into a new house and want to use the existing coax network with my internet. There's basically one coax outlet per room. I'll be getting Frontier internet and they're going to hook their modem/router combo up to one of the coax outlets to provide the internet. Since there aren't any other coax outlets nearby, I can't go

    coax -> Frontier modem/router -> MoCA adapter -> coax

If the MoCA adapter is in a different room, will that adapter's devices still connect to the router?

I found this. Would that still work if I use a MoCA adapter in another room?

Router Slows Speeds After SSID Change

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:54 AM PDT

Long story short, Spectrum and I discovered my Netgear Nighthawk v6700 was the reason why I wasn't getting 400 down, only 200 even when wired right into it. We did a factory reset of the router and it fixed the problem....until I changed the SSID and password off from the default, then it began limiting my speeds to 200 again. For fun, I repeated the whole process by myself and the same thing happened. I have no idea what is going on: no other settings besides WiFi name and password are being changed and I lose half my speed! Can one of you help me?

    Intermittent Lag Spikes

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:54 AM PDT

I've been having an issue for 6-8 months now where no matter how I'm connected to my internet (WiFi or Ethernet), no matter what game, even if nothing else but the Xbox is connected to the internet, I get 2 lag spikes every 30 minutes on the dot.

I'm using the Xbox One X. I have the Netgear Nighthawk X4S AC2600.

This issue occurs on every device on my internet.

I've had my ISP check the internet, everything is fine. I've troubleshot my router, to no avail. I don't really know what else to do at this point.

    Any suggestions?

Gigabit Ethernet failing: only wires 1, 2, 3, and 6 test correctly

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:16 AM PDT

Hey everyone, hoping I can get some guidance here to troubleshoot my home's Ethernet wiring. The backstory follows in case it's relevant, but the last paragraph in bold is where I've ended up stuck at present. Thanks for your help!

We bought a house that had been reno'd with Cat5e run throughout as part of the reno. It was never finished: the cables all gathered into the furnace room and only one cable leading up to the Family Room was terminated. There's no panel.

Space is tight and adding a panel wasn't feasible, but I did terminate them using Cat6 pass-through connectors. This gave me gigabit Ethernet to every port in the house except three. The Rec Room wire was also unterminated, so I added a Cat6 keystone and now have gigabit Ethernet there.

That leaves the two Family Room connections. My tester showed the connections were only good on wires 1, 2, 3, and 6.

The one cable which had been terminated in the basement runs up to a media cupboard. The pairs were quite exposed going into the keystone and the wires looked bent and suspect so I replaced the keystone with the same Cat6 keystone that worked well in the Rec Room. No change in the test results, so I changed the connector in the basement and still got the same 1, 2, 3, and 6 result.

The other cable to the Family Room runs to a keystone under a desk. I've terminated it in the basement using the same Cat6 pass-through connector. The keystone is Cat5e. It too tests as 1, 2, 3, and 6.

Of course there could be the exact same break in both cables to the Family Room, but it seems high unlikely that both cables would have the same 1, 2, 3, and 6 connections. In my entirely uninformed opinion the most likely answer at this point is that during the reno someone was trying to use up sections of cable and instead of doing an uninterrupted run used a Cat5 connector somewhere in the middle to extend both of the cables going to the family room. Does that sound likely or is there something else I should be checking?

    R7000P MLB.TV and Audio Doesn’t Work

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:31 PM PDT

I have 4 devices: iPAD, iphone, Chromebook, and Macbook. When I attempt to access MLB TV Streaming or MLB Audio, I immediately get an unknown error.

When I remove the R7000P from the equation: Using WiFI hotspot over cellular OR directly into my cable modem or another WiFi Router (Asus), it works just fine. So there is something that the Nethawk is messing up.

Oddly enough, I have not seen any other issues with my other streaming applications, Youtube.tv, netflix, etc.

I am also on the latest firmware release for the router.

    Any suggestions?

How to please spouse, Google, and networking?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:28 PM PDT

Building a new house, going to run ethernet to all rooms from a centrally managed switch.

My significant other loves to be in total control, so long as that control is super easy and does not have any options that might be confusing - super easy. So currently we use Google Wifi, and we just moved and I gave in and didn't argue about why my desktop needs a wire.

Anyhow, in the new house, I would like to be able to use the Google system as wifi only devices, but through the existing ethernet network.

I'm not actually familiar with the internal s of the Google system, except to understand they are pretty user unfriendly, that could be hearsay.

Is it possible for them to work in AP mode and create their mesh as they do just plugged into a switch or will they need static IP's and NAT/dhcp/firewall disabled? I've got a decent router, and a 24 port switch going in for the house Ethernet wiring.

Or, should I just upgrade the wife. Not sure which is cheaper...

Hooking up media devices via Ethernet won’t recognize internet signal

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:27 PM PDT

I am in need of some assistance with connection over ethernet for my Apple TV 4Ks. I recently moved and made sure to have a hard line connection in every room for various devices. Media room and bedrooms have apple TV 4Ks in them all running TVOS 12.4

The ethernet connections are all ran to a switch in a structured media panel. I have verified the cable is getting a connection because it works when I plug it directly into my TV (LG C8) and it gets an internet signal. This problem consists across multiple apple TV 4Ks and multiple CAT 6 and CAT 5e cables in different rooms. I've done all the standard restart, power cycle (Apple TVs, network switch, router, and modem), even factory reset 1 apple TV 4K to test that.

Now the apple TV recognizes there is an ethernet connection, obtains an IP address but does not get an internet signal. WIFI works fine. What am I missing?

    Thanks!
