PSA/Reminder: Amazon affiliate links and uRL shorteners are not allowed on this sub

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:10 AM PDT

Some of you may remember me saying I'd block shorteners, as well as make good on my threat to block Amazon affiliate links (which are also prohibited on this sub).

Well, I finally got off my lazy ass and did it. So, to avoid any confusion/frustration I'm (re)reminding everyone that these things are not allowed and will get ceremoniously removed automatically.

As always, we want to hear your thoughts on how moderation is carried out on this sub, if you have any suggestions/gripes/so forth.

    Thanks everyone!

Looking for a network switch / rg6 splitter system

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:15 PM PDT

I am an industrial electrician by trade who is wiring my friends house that he is building. I talked him into letting me run cat 6 throughout the house. I am also going to run the rg6 throughout the house. Does anyone have any experience or know of a rack type or modular type setup for residential that I can put a network switch, a splitter for the rg6 and maybe a dvr or nvr for cameras? I have experience with industrial rack mount switches and like the idea of it in a house, just on a smaller scale. Also if anyone has any suggestions on what else to add for home networking or home automation, I'm all ears!

    Cisco Multicast/IGMP Proxy without pim?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 02:33 PM PDT

I had a Cisco C897VA connected to a VDSL 2 circuit and have upgraded it to a Cisco C1100 connected to an Ethernet circuit. The data side works fine but there was a Multicast service (IPTV) also provided by this circuit and it no longer works. I'm wondering if what I want is possible in Cisco or if I'll have to find an alternative some how.

In order for the IPTV to work the device in VLAN 20 sends an IGMPv3 Join message which must be forwarded to the provider outside of PPPoE encapsulation (so on ethernet 0/0/0 rather than the dialer interface). On the 897VA i could use a bridge interface to bridge VLAN 20 and the Ethernet0 interface so the join requests worked. On the C1100 these are WAN ports and so the bridging command is not available.

The provider utilizes PPPoE for the connection. So on both routers I have a dialer interface for the PPPoE and the actual interface for the the physical connection (Ethernet0 for the C897 and Gi0/0/0 for the C1100). The default route is learned via PPP via the dialer interface.

Does Cisco support any way in which I can forward any IGMP join requests sent on VLAN 20 directly out interface Ethernet 0/0/0? Is there some IGMP setup I've missed or is this just not possible?

Is it possible to have my wifi devices auto switch from router to router around my house?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:38 PM PDT

I currently have a G1100 verizon router and a tp link AC1350 on the opposite sides of the house. I was wondering if it is possible to auto switch wifi signals. At the moment i have to disconnect and reconnect in order to get wifi on the opposite side of the house. Not that big of a deal but its annoying.

    Not Getting Gigabit Connection Speeds!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:32 PM PDT

Hey all, I was speaking with a friend recently and they told me that Verizon Fios had Gb connection as their standard connection speed. Out of curiosity, I went home and checked my plan and saw that I was, in fact, on the Gb plan. After some research, I made sure all components of my home network were compatible with Gb connection speed. The issue I'm having is that I barely break the 100/100mbps speeds when testing speeds at different times of the day on different devices both wired and on WiFi. What started as a mere curiosity is driving me nuts. I want my gigabit!

    My set up is...

Verizon provided modem/router on the first floor which supplies the first floor and basement.

Hardwired router on the second floor (to the router on the first floor) going to my PC/smart phones/anything else on the second floor.

any idea where to check first?

    Much thanks in advance!

New home - network setup for newbie

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:24 PM PDT

I am in the process of having a new house being built. For reference, it will be roughly 3,500 square feet 2 story + basement. I am looking for advice on the best way to network my entire house, for now and the future. Meaning, not right away but eventually I'll get the basement finished and will want all the accoutrement for computers and TVs and WiFi alike. The builder said I could lay any Ethernet and cable I would like during the build. This could be me or a networking professional. I would much rather have it done this way rather than the general contractor laying cable and setting up a network. I'm looking to also have home security (cameras, door/window/motion sensors)... factor this in if necessary.

I've heard of meshes, nodes, etc. I believe a hardline to every feasible device is better, correct me if I'm wrong.

So, I'm looking for advice on setting this up during construction. Do I have a third party pro come do this? Is it something I could do myself? Pardon if this is way too basic info for this type of question or this sub. FWIW, I've laid some line in my current house, but no where near the extent of setting up from the very bottom.

Having troubles with a wifi exender giving the wrong IP scope to connections.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 07:14 PM PDT

It's probably a bad unit as it was initially working fine, but let me start from the beginning.

Verizon FIOS customer, have a router with wifi (2.4 and 5ghz) in the basement. Horrible signal on the second level, so I got the Rock Space RSD0608 AC1200 Wifi extender to increase the signal upstairs. Out of the box, and during the "quick setup" I was asked which wifi SSID I wanted to extend. I was greedy and set the system to extend the 5g wifi signal. It didn't offer me the option to extend the 2.4 signal, so I just assumed it would only work on the one frequency. It worked, but it was slow and using Wifi analyzer I saw a huge difference between the 2.4 and 5ghz signals (I know, that's obvious) so I decided to swap the extender over to the 2.4 signal.

I reset the extender using the "hold reset button for 15 seconds" and was able to reconnect to the quick setup screen again. This time I selected the 2.4ghz SSID and was told that I had "successfully" extended the connection. However, I also saw the yellow star on my wifi bars and when I moused over it, the message clearly said "no internet, secured".

I checked the properties of the connection, and low and behold the IP address was on a different subnet. Primary wifi is on 192.168.1.x, and now the extender was on 192.168.0.x. When I had initially set up the extender on the 5ghz connection the IP address was correctly configured (it was on 192.168.1.x), but for some reason I can not get the extender to now provide anything EXCEPT the 192.168.0.x IP addresses.

Unfortunately the user interface has no options to really configure the device, and I'm failing at my google-fu tonight because i can not find anything similar out there or how to resolve it. So I turn to you guys and hope that someone has seen something similar and it's a quick fix......or do I have a broken device.....or did I somehow screw something up without even realizing it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Options for extending WiFi from apartment

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:54 PM PDT

I live on the third floor of an apartment complex. The gym and media room WiFi is often terrible. I'm considering trying to extend my WiFi from my apartment to cover those areas. It would be down two floors and over about 4 apartments.

My wife can sometimes see our WiFi from the gym.

All my gear is ubiquiti unifi so I would like to continue in that device family.

What I was considering was getting one of their mesh APs and a directional antennae pointing in the direction I care about. I also considered repurposing one of their litebeam devices but I'm not sure if it would be effective.

Any help, tips, ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A fresh start. Router. mesh or what?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:39 PM PDT

So I need to replace my network. At the moment I have an aging router (ac1200) which does not service the whole house and a few switches.

Im trying to figure out the best combo and I'm a little lost. Any advice on what to fgo for?

I've looked at either a new router or going mesh. Whatever the solution i need it to be flexible as a rental leaning me towards mesh but I'm unsure if thats a straight swap and an effective option across all the devices.

I could connect them via the cabling in this house though.

House: Rented 4 bed 2 floors. 3500sq ft External and garage brick, internal wood and drywall Internet connection in garage Cabled with 5 ports (can move the router elsewhere and more central potentially)

Current usage: Netflix/Stan HD streaming across multiple devices 12 odd mobile/wireless devices (laptops, Google home, tablets, mobiles, printer etc) No smart home devices Gaming (ps3/ps4/switch)

Current issues: Lack of Parental control (3 kids one preteen) Poor coverage no service at all in furthest bedrooms Dropped connections Slow speeds 100mbps home Broadband is less than 10 to 15 in middle of home)

Advice needed: Thinking about purchasing a R7800 to replace a R7000

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:10 PM PDT

Hello r/HomeNetworking, I've been doing a lot of research lately because I'm looking at getting a better router to handle our growing network needs. The R7000 has performed well, but due to our device numbers expanding our network stability has been somewhat spotty. The R7000 is not perfect by any means, and has had its issues, but I'm finally deciding to pull the trigger on an upgrade.

I have read many of you here have a good opinion on the R7800 X4S, as well as its superior QoS capabilities.

    So here are my questions:

--Is the R7800 a decent purchase in today's market?

--Would it be a worthy upgrade from the R7000?

--Is there any other good/bad things I should know about the R7800?

--Would anyone be willing to suggest alternative home routers that may perform better than the R7800?

    Thanks everyone.

Why is my cat6 cable capped at 100mbps?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:03 PM PDT

Hi, i have a 20m cat6 cable that is limited to a transfer speed of 100mbps. It runs through the walls and thus hard to replace.

I took the router closer and used a 5e cable and I was getting 250mbps which is the correct download speed from the internet modem.

Should i try to redo the end points of the cat6 cable or should I replace it entirely?

Wifi Direct Tether vs dedicated router

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 05:58 PM PDT

We have 3G mobile hotspot (literally the only other internet available is 900kbps down DSL).

It's usable, but I'm considering switching to a 4G provider. The problem is the 3G hotspot is truly unlimited with no caps, so I get about 8-10 mbps down reliably.

It's still too slow for some things like streaming games or some hi def streams, so I'm thinking of switching to a 4G provider for some devices (like the Nintendo switch or NVIDIA game streaming) and leaving stuff that burns data (daily netflix for kids) on the other connection.

I tested the network by popping a sim card into an old phone and running Foxfi. I have the full version, so it should be going as fast as it can go, but I'm still at like 10 mbps down. Multiple connections become obvious quickly.

Is connecting via wifi direct tether a fair representation of the network's speed, or does it need an actual 4G router for a fair trial? My problem is my current router is only 3G compatible and I'd rather not buy a 4G router if the performance would be the same.

Wifi Extender keeps changing my password whenever I try to connect router to it

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 04:17 PM PDT

What exactly is happening here? I reset the extender and my router, changed my passwords. Whenever I try to reconnect my router to my extender, the password in my router settings will change. The first time it changed it to the old password, the second time I tried it cut off the first ten characters.

What in the world is happening here?

My modem decided to connect to Comcast on its own, although I have been using another ISP for 3 years without any changes. Could someone tell me what's going on?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:47 AM PDT

This happened yesterday. The modem is Arris sb6141. I have been using Wow Internet for the past 3 years and it has been working well. But yesterday, my modem suddenly decided to connect to Comcast Xfinity on its own. On my laptop, the browser redirects me to the Xfinity activation page: https://register.be.xfinity.com/activate . On my Android phone, I got a 'Sign in to Wi-Fi network' notification, which brings me to the same page. I do use a router, which is Linksys AC1750. So I also tried to connect my laptop to the modem directly with the Ethernet cable, but I still get redirected to the same page.

I contacted the tech support at Wow Internet. The person suggested that I (i) hard reset the modem. I did that several times, but it didn't help. (Apparently this modem doesn't have a physical hard reset button, I had to log in to 192.168.100.1 to do the hard reset. Also, the modem was bought from Best Buy, not rented); (ii) scan my laptop with antivirus. But I'm using Linux Mint OS because it's my work laptop, and I never installed anything new recently. Also, my phone is experiencing the same thing, so I don't think it could be a virus. But she did confirm that I'm still a Wow Internet customer and I should be receiving their service. In the end, she couldn't offer me much help.

I also tried to change the DNS server addresses, but the result was that every page gave a name resolution error, instead of redirecting to the Comcast activation page.

Does anyone know what could be going on? How could Comcast suddenly 'own' my modem? Or, could Comcast somehow own my coax cable? I had not modified anything in my networking setup recently until this happened. Should I get rid of the modem and buy a new one? Is the modem to blame, or is it something else (coax cable? ISP?)

    Any help is much appreciated!

Edit: I contacted Wow Internet again, and provided their tech support with what I've learned from the replies, particularly the one from u/digitalnoise . But their tech support still couldn't offer any help, except to send a technician over next week. So for the next couple of days, my internet won't have access to anything besides the Comcast activation page.

    Low profile Ethernet wall jacks?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT

I'm going about replacing the cat5e that's been run in my house as data ports. Wonderful right? Right! After all... Land-lines are dead.

Except there's one drop location that is 17.4mm deep and they used a low profile phone jack that appears to be this exact model. It's a raised faceplate that contains all the connection pieces in the raised portion.

Anyone know of a way or product to squeeze an RJ45/8p8c jack without cutting a bigger hole in the wall? I'm trying not to do more damage to the wall than already exists... if it comes to it I'll do it. But I'm looking for alternatives before I resort to cutting away more wall.

I've looked for right angle things, or low profile keystones(standard keystones are about 25mm deep guesstimate)... But I've come up with nothing thus far (20-30 minutes of the Duckduckgo).

PS. I've already resolved all the ports that are chained together and have pulled those out and blank plated them, please don't bring it up.

Edit: When I say 17.4mm deep I mean the idiots already mounted a box-like structure there. Looks like this right now. So I kind of want the faceplate type structure to cover their stupidity. I temporarily terminated it to test the cable in my tester.

Need help getting lower game ping

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:06 PM PDT

I am a professional Fortnite player, and as such, I want the lowest possible ping to the servers I compete on. I have fiber optics, and internet speeds of 100/100, as well as a cat 6 ethernet connection from my router to my PC, so you would think I am getting good ping, but I am not. I get about 50 ping constantly to the servers, and when other people are on the servers I am (AWS servers in Virginia) in-game, my ping can spike to 60. This is a huge disadvantage in the game, especially when facing very low ping players. I know that part of my high ping is the fact that I like in Arkansas which is far from Virginia, but I also know of people further away from the servers than I am in texas getting 30-40 ping. I am almost sure at this point it is due to the number of hops my ISP is routing me through, and also the fact that my route to the servers seems to be going in a circle? Anyways I'm here asking if I am right about why my ping is high and if there is anything I can do to improve my ping at all (even by 1 I just want lower ping)

Will my home be fine with only 1 router?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:06 PM PDT

Family just moved over to Xfinity and we decided to stop paying equipment rental fees.

Our modem and router is located on the second floor of our house(only 2 floors) but it's the furthest room away from the living room and other bedrooms. Right now, our living room and kitchen have terrible service but think it's due to our plan with ATT.

I have a set of powerline adapters available so I should be able to connect both routers on the same network. Should I/Can I buy another router?

Subnet address of a third tier subnet

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 02:56 PM PDT

I'm currently moving one home network into another one by setting up a subnetwork so that I don't have to reconfigure a bunch of device/application settings to look for new static IP addresses.

    https://pasteboard.co/Ir2raCE.png

See image above, the green network is the one I already have setup and want to add to the blue and orange, which already exist in the current configuration. Note I can't change the blue/orange config.

What I wanted to check is whether having the same subnet (192.168.1.x) would break things. The aim here is that the green network can communicate with the orange devices (since Router 3 would forward requests to router 2 which knows about the 192.168.2.x network). It should still be able to communicate with the WAN due to NAT in blue network forwarding back down the chain from where the request came.

I would add a static route on the orange, 192.168.2.x, network (192.168.1.0/24 forwarded to 192.168.2.100) to allow devices using the Wifi APs to be able to communicate with servers on the green network.

    Is there anything I'm missing?

EDIT: I would also be doing a bunch of port forwarding to ensure the right services can bypass firewalls etc.

EDIT: 192.168.1.100 on the digram was a typo - should be 192.168.2.100

    4G LTE Home Internet help (T-mobile sim/Netgear LB1120)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 02:48 PM PDT

So I recently purchased an unlimited 4g lte data plan through a wireless high-speed internet provider that included a T-mobile sim card and a Netgear LB1120 modem. I have that hooked up to a tp-link 450mbps wireless N router. My house is only ~.9 mi from the nearest T-mobile tower (through trees) but I'm only getting speeds from 0.5-2 mbps down and <1 mbps up. I don't have a whole lot of knowledge/experience when it comes to networking so any advice or suggestions on how to fix these speeds would be appreciated.

Option A or B for home network upgrade

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:49 AM PDT

    Current setup:
    - Gigabit Fiber coming into main study in basement
    - Archer C9 in basement providing wifi to whole house, 2.4 and 5 ghz on same SSID. Ethernet connection to server in same room.
    - 2300 sq ft to cover - 2 levels - lots of walls
    - Coverage so far has been decent, a bit spotty upstairs at furthest distance from router but not a big deal.

    Problem:
With the addition of more wifi devices (including a nest doorbell) the network is struggling more. Also, we have an HTPC in the living room, which is served content from the server in the study. I've been using a powerline adapter, but that also seems slow and often doesn't work, necessitating a wireless adapter as backup. Primary use here is Plex, and some of the larger HD video files often struggle to play at full quality.

    Goal:
    - Fast connection to HTPC, stronger coverage for multiple devices through home.

    Option A: Netgear Orbi ($150)
    - Netgear Orbi mini AC2200 (router and satellite) https://www.costco.com/Netgear-Orbi-Mini-AC2200-Tri-Band-WiFi-System%2C-2-pack.product.100398382.html
My understanding is that the Orbi moves data fast. This package should be adequate I think for a 2300 sq ft house. Put the router in the study, and the satellite next to the HTPC, use ethernet ports on satellite to connect to HTPC (distance to HTPC from server is not too far).

Option B: Moca + Access Point ($130 + additional access point cost)
We have coax averywhere in this house. I could get two Moca adapters (https://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-Bonded-Ethernet-Adapter-ECB6200K02/dp/B013J7O3X0) to connect my current router to a new access point I install at the HTPC. I have an old Netgear WNDR3300 (has 2.4 and 5ghz) I could use for this, or I could look for something else if that router is too old. This gives me the option of adding more access points in the future with additional adapters if needed.

    Option C: Both ($280)
I could buy the Orbi package, and connect them using Moca - creating a super fast link between the two and better coverage over the whole house using Orbi's superior hardware. This sounds nice, but I'm fairly budget conscious right now.

    Current inclination:
Right now I'm leaning towards just getting the Orbi - if it is fast and strong enough it saves me a lot of time and complication. I'm worried about the potential complications that can occur setting up my own additional access point, and using old hardware to do this. My bigger concern is strong coverage for multiple devices.

    Questions:
    - What do you think is the most effective option here?
    - Am I missing anything? I try to do my research but I'm no expert
    - If I go the Orbi route, could I use my C9 as an additional access point elsewhere? It's still a nice router

    Misc:
    - Would love to wire ethernet, but the layout of the house makes it virtually impossible, incredible expensive. Would have to rip out a bunch of drywall.

Thanks in advance! Really appreciate any input that anyone has.

Remote Desktop Assistance - 2 Deep

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 10:49 AM PDT

I have a hyper-v homelab installed on a Dell T30. The host OS is Windows 10 Pro. The virtual environment is made up of three VMs. There is a Windows Server Domain controller, a Windows Server non-domain controller, and a regular Windows 10 Pro. All three VMs are on the same domain. If I am working remotely, I can easily remote into the host machine, the T30, and from there I can remote into any of the VMs.

Is there a way to remote directly to one of the VMs, so I'm not two screens deep?

    Edit: Resolved

Within Hyper V, I have a private switch and external switch. I just had to point you the IP address of the external switch. This IP address is different than the address of my host, which is what was throwing me off.

This part is likely not best practice, but I had to enable Encryption Oracle Remediation and set the level to Vulnerable. I'm okay with this for a homelab because networking is not my goal.

Looking for advice for changing router location.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 02:17 PM PDT

I am currently having some trouble with wifi in some areas of my home and I would like to move my router upstairs (I have a raised ranch style home -main floor/basement).

My router is currently set up in my basement office alongside the modem where the line comes in. In this same location, multiple Ethernet ports from around the house terminate.

    Essentially here is my issue:

    1. I want my router on the main floor to improve wireless coverage. I am planning to connect the router to one of the main floor Ethernet ports that terminate in the basement office.
    2. I need to be able to connect the other Ethernet ports (again terminating in the office) to the Internet as well.
    3. I need to connect my desktop in the office to the Internet - wired.
    4. I also don't want multiple networks on my home.

So I have been looking for a solution that provides a hardline source of internet (input from modem) with multiple Ethernet ports to provide service to the rest of the house, desktop in the same room, AND router in another room.

Modem -> ???? -> router ????-> desktop, other hardline Connections

(Using mobile app so hopefully that looks right!)

    Thanks in advance.

    Edit:

    Solved!

I ended up setting up my main router upstairs configured as an access point and an older router downstairs that the desktop and AP are hardwired to. Thanks for your help!

    Suggest a router for me?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 01:10 PM PDT

Hey I know nothing about routers, as the only ones I've ever had was the ones that the ISP provides.

I'm getting a 200mb/200up connection in my business, minus the router they provide so I can save $20 a month using my own router... I don't have one and I especially don't want to buy a cheap one, and find out that it doesn't support the 200/200 connection.

What is a budget friendly good router that will support my connection? I'm not doing anything besides video streaming via YouTube, Apple Music, and some light reddit browsing. And late in the AM maybe some light gaming... super smash bros, magic the gathering and maybe a few others. :)

Thank you in advance, and sorry if this has been asked 100000000000 times before. Have a good weekend.

Can I convert Qnap 251+ into different OS for homelab network

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 12:26 PM PDT

    Hello

I have a 1gb home network with about 7 devices. Ive been messing around with Virtual machines and networking as a hobby.

I got a great deal a few years ago on a qnap 251+ (16mb ram) 4tb hard drives.

I just really dislike qnap software. Its way overkill. Its slow and just not for me. Is there a way to install Debian or ubuntu in its place?

    Setup - r8500 dd wrt 1gb network.

Intent - mess around with some VM and back up local computers. Nothing serious.
