My father keeps downloading viruses. How can I monitor the sites he visits so I can block them?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:24 AM PDT

He lives with us and he's older and clueless about the difference between a search bar and posting on facebook. It might be porn. I'm prepared for that. I just don't want to have to keep fixing his computer every week.

I don't know how to see what computers do, but I do know how to block IP addresses from the router. Can anyone help me with the first step?

Edit: Additional info. He's otherwise completely independent and has his own garage apartment and income and everything so the laptop is his own. We're not to the point yet where it's feasible to start managing his stuff directly.

I saw wireshark and pihole when I first looked this up but I didn't know if that was the right solution.

Multiple routers in house with different SSID's. Better way to setup SSID's to allow autoconnect?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 07:23 PM PDT

My mom's house is a 60 year old ranch house that requires multiple wireless routers to provide coverage to the entire house (just too big, stone walls, etc.). I have 5 routers in the house all with different adjustments to the main name (e.g. SSID-office, SSID-bedroom, SSID-basement), etc. I have taught my parents that when they move rooms, they need to manually connect to the SSID they are near (they have learned where each is). Otherwise, when they move rooms, the device will stay connected to the previous SSID which will end up having a very poor signal.

Is there a way to setup the SSID's (same SSID?) such that devices will autoconnect to the strongest signal when moving around the houe?

Other features other than Custom fw? NETGEAR R7800

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:31 PM PDT

So I recently got a r7800 and managed to install Voxel's custom fw.

What other features can I install on my router to really fully take advantage of this piece of equipment?

I plan on running a Plex/home theater server in a couple months. I currently game a lot on PC and consoles and download a lot of media. I have Spectrum as my ISP with 100mbps.

Some features I would like to have:
•Ad blocking navitely from the router instead of having to install browser add ons.
•Hide my activity from my ISP (torrenting/etc)
    •Privacy features.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to network stuff. I'm kind of tech savvy, but this is probably my least knowledgeable field. I can plug in Ethernet cables and mess with a couple settings on the router, but nothing more.

    Thanks in advance.

Easy way to add bandwidth management/Guest networking to my home network?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:25 PM PDT

My current setup consists of an ISP fiber modem, a 5-port switch (TP-Link TL-SG1005D) to allow more than one LAN port to be connected to the fiber modem, various old routers used as switches/wireless APs for various parts of the house.

The ISP doesn't allow any advanced settings on the Fiber modem unless I sign a waiver. (I can only change Wi-Fi password, etc.). I work from home so I want to have set times where some ethernet cables get speed limited, and allow the ethernet cable to my home office free from any throttling.

Basically I want to set bandwidth caps in some ethernet lines during my work hours, and also set up to have one ethernet line as a guest network to isolate from the home network. I was thinking of getting TP-Link TL-SG108E 8-port switch as it seems to have an interface and it's cheap.

Could this provide what I'm looking for?

MoCA Adapters not working. What equipment do I replace?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:03 PM PDT

Just bought two MoCA adapters so I can wire up my house over its existing coax connections.

The two adapters work if I plug them directly into each other without going through my house's wiring, so I know the existing wiring is the issue

All of my existing coax connections run into a panel. The panel has two of these, one that feeds into the other. It also has three of these.

What do I need to replace to get this working?

    Edit: And the whole panel

I believe the previous owner used satellite TV and that's what all this was wired for. I don't need it and am happy to replace whatever is needed.

Need help on what WIFI antenna to use

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 07:07 PM PDT

I would like to connect to my internet in location which is approximately 500m away from my home. The router that is used is a NETGEAR C6300BD around the city (may have huge interference). How can this be achieved? Do I extend the transmission or receiving signal? I'm a beginner at using antennas.

Trying to hardwire a mesh network.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:55 PM PDT

I'm currently using two Google wifi pucks in my apartment. One of the pucks is near the modem in our living room. Our apartment is shaped like a rectangle and my bedroom is on the opposite end of the living room. I was having issues with wifi signal so I bought a second puck and placed it in my room. We pay for 400mbps internet and unfortunately, I don't think I'm getting what I should be getting in my room. I've heard that hardwiring the pucks can help. I tried to hardwire the puck in my room. However, I'm not sure I did it correctly because I'm not really seeing a boost in performance.

Our apartment is wired for CAT5 or CAT6, I'm not sure exactly but it was built in the last two years so I'm fairly confident it's one of those. I basically went:

Modem to the primary puck, primary puck to ethernet port (wall in the living room), ethernet port (wall in the bedroom) to the second puck

Did I miss a step here? I've read on some sites including Google's about the option to add a network switch. However, I know nothing about network switches. Do I need one here? Hardwiring the second puck from the primary puck really isn't an option.

Or is there an altogether better scenario that I'm just overlooking?

    Thanks.

Question about practicality of a switch

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:44 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have a 1Gbps Fibre Internet contract. I laid an Ethernet cable from my router to my desktop PC. The thing is, I'd like to wire other devices, and especially another router (a TP-Link router) because I have Wifi issues because of a load-bearing wall. My main router is too far from the devices I'd like to connect with, I only have one hole in the wall to pass one Ethernet cable (there is absolutely no more space for another cable). After going through the load-bearing wall, the cable lay through the attic and I don't have space problem anymore, I can do what I want.

Anyway, I wonder if a switch could be the solution to my problem. I'll put it in the attic and plug my main router directly into the switch, then all my devices will be connected to the switch with an Ethernet cable each.

I don't know exactly how a switch works, especially for the bandwidth. Does each device connected divide the bandwidth or is it dynamic ? For example when a single device is running, can it use all the 1Gbps bandwidth for itself ? For a private is a switch practical, like easy to use ?

    Thank you.

PS : I made a quick drawing to explain what does my current installation looks like and how I see it with a switch. A red line indicates, an RJ45 cable.

    Help choosing router

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:25 PM PDT

I've got 400mb with my ISP and a router/modem combo ARRIS TG2492LG-NA, I've noticed that I lose wifi connection several times a week, the wifi stays connected but I dont get internet or access to local network. So I was thinking of changing the router and use the router/modem combo only as a modem or leave as is and have another router.

I live in a 100 square meter apartment with several others nearby. We are 5 at the apartment and have a lot of devices connected, the 4 ethernet ports on the modem are already used, several phones and tablets, chromecast, roku, smart TV, 5 notebooks, several gaming consoles, 1 desktop, 1 NAS/Server, 1 raspberry pi connected 24/7 through wifi. Lots of devices connected and used simultaneously.

I've been reading about the TP-Link archer C7 or A7, but want to read other suggestions specific to my issue

    Home network setup

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:07 PM PDT

Moving into a new home by the end of the month. It is about 2300 sq ft and 3 levels. I will have Fios gig setup 940/880 down/up. The connection to the router/zap will be via a cat6 cable.

What should I start with? I want the best possible internet setup. Should I look at the AC pro from ubiquiti, or something else?

    Ideal Ubiquiti Setup?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:14 PM PDT

Seems like my Asus RT87U is no longer able to handle my home network, devices will randomly drop a few times a week, camera feeds are not stable, Airplay stutters, 5Ghz going down, etc.

What is the ideal setup / What do I need to buy to service a 2400 sq ft 2 story home with 50-70 devices (15 WiFi/IP cameras, 20-25 Smart Home devices, 10 tablets mounted throughout as control panels)?

Not necessarily fixed on Ubiquiti but seems like that's what everyone recommends here? Budget isn't necessarily an issue but don't really need any fancy features, maybe just QoS & monitoring traffic, ultimately I'm after stability.

Near No Home Networking knowledge. Need Help Choosing between a NETGEAR RBK23 (router + 2 Satellites) (AC2200) vs Google WiFi (Router + 2 Satellites) as gift for parents 1,800 foot 2 Story L home

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 01:26 PM PDT

Hey All! My parents WiFi has been VERY Unreliable for years. As a birthday Gift I wanted to get them a Mesh WiFi system. For their needs, I narrowed it down to the following two setups, but didn't really know what the difference was between them.

    NETGEAR RBK23 (AC2200): https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Orbi-Whole-Home-System/dp/B07CQDHPFT/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=rbk23&qid=1565036005&s=electronics&sr=1-3)

    V.S.

    Google WiFi: https://www.amazon.com/Google-WiFi-system-3-Pack-replacement/dp/B01MAW2294/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=google+wifi&qid=1565036436&s=electronics&sr=1-3).

    My Questions:

    • I've heard NETGEAR's reliability is fixed after the last firmware update, but if not, Which is more Reliable?
    • Which one will provide a faster internet connection?
    • Will both incur large drop-off speeds?
    • What are the greatest differences in these two products?
    • Which would you recommend based off of the description of the house layout and usage?

    Some info about Our House:

My parents room is upstairs. My room is below that. Down the hall and to the right in. Small bedroom is the modem. The living room is just passed that. Making a left and then. Another left coming from the hallway takes you out of the living room and into our kitchen. Walking straight through brings you into our den, which sits below my parents room as well. The house is one unit, but the big access points are upstairs in my parents room, my room, and then around on the opposite side in the den. Idk if modems current location hurts or not. It's towards the middle of the house, but off of a hallway in a small bedroom.

Devices connected: 3 smartphones, 2 smart TV's, 3 computers. However, I will be moved out in about 8 months, and It will be down to 1 Computer, 1 iPad, 2 cell phones, 2 smart TV's.

We plan on connecting the modem to the router, and potentially hardwiring the printer as well.

    Thank you for your help!

Why are my Router and my Computer showing me different IPv6 Addresses?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 05:07 PM PDT

    Hello,

i´m about to install some home network devices and so i was looking up some ipv6 addresses.

So i type ipconfig in cmd and get the ipv6 of my computer, but in the router interface under "connected devices" is another ipv6 adress than the adress that the cmd gave me.

Is that normal and which of those addresses should i use to talk to my computer?

Fritz router and another Router. Did I just make a mistake?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 04:08 PM PDT

In Germany we have these routers called Fritz Box which usually acts as a router/modem telephone system. However they're (in my opinion) not that great for large families with a fairly large house even with extenders. Plus mine is fairly old now.

Anyway I recently bought a ASUS RT-AX88U and only afterwards realised this doesn't have a modem and obviously no telephone... God sometimes im stupid.

Anyway can I use the Fritz box as a modem/telephone and make the Asus the primary access point for all the Internet side of things?

Or will I have to lan connect both routers and just disable the wifi of the Fritz box?

200 ping average from my router (C900A) to centurylink. Massive ping in first hop

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:09 PM PDT

    (Edit: Using ethernet cable)

I play overwatch and normally my ping is 50 ms tops, but I randomly noticed that my ping would jump to 300 for no reason, I left on a trip and came back to find it was no longer random but 24/7 my ping just to my ISP server (which is barely 50 miles away) is over 200 MS.

My router's status is fine, I checked it for updates, ect and no problems. Centurylink tech support is hell so I am hesitant to contact them about it other then to ask about their servers. There is nothing however going on in my area according to them so it's specifically me.

I have 30 mbps download speed and upload speed of 4 mbps. I tried testing my speeds on all internet speed tests and they all come back over 200. Every traceroute says the first hop is about 200 m/s. This used to be random and now it's constant.

I am a noob with networking so I appreciate any help.

    Using router behind mesh node.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT

Bit off an odd situation here, but unfortunately where my internet enters my home is on the opposite side of the house from where my computer and home server are set up.

The internet company router/modem is in the master bedroom and they gave me a mesh node that I put in the room where I intend to have my router/pc/server living. Is there a way to have the cable company router/mesh node act as a bridge together and have my personal router act as the one doing all the traffic handling/dhcp/wifi/etc duties?

I would prefer to keep this basic architecture since the router I own has some features such as VPN support that the cable company provided one does not, but running a wire through the attic isn't practical and there is nothing like a coax cable running between them either.

edit: this is an att bgw210 as the modem an air4920 as the node connected to a linksys wrt3200acm by cat5e. I don't care as much about the speed out of my network as much as I do about getting the setup all revolving around my linksys

Unusual Upload speed drops, issues recording when they happen, and proving to ISP.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:59 PM PDT

From about Oct (or earlier) of last year, up to July, I fought with my ISP about unusual spikes in the evenings of packet loss. So bad, it has kicked my roommate and I out of games, robotified voice chats, or generally lagged games and caused watching live streams to stutter/buffer.

This I was able to monitor with constant 1 second pings to three sites, and when all three were affected, I'd report to my ISP (via twitter DM). These spikes happened 1-3 times a week, and only in the evenings. Too specific to be normal, and my ISP fought with me the whole way, saying it was on my side of the modem. Long story short, no, it was the node I was connecting to, and someone else on the node was creating a ton of noise.

The issue I'm seeing now, as I can comfortably stream to twitch (technically restream.io, which allows me to stream to youtube at the same time, for storage purposes mostly), is my upload is heavily degraded at random times.

I stream at 4Mbs (1080p 30fps, or 720p 30fps, depending on the demand of the game).

Speed I'm working with is 100/7.5Mb. No better speeds other than upping my download to 150Mb, and same upload.

Before Oct, I normally had no issues. However as of late, it's been more regular, even when not streaming, to notice the upload is, for short moments, throttled.

Constant pings barely show the issue happening, unless there's enough upload load to assist.

The speeds I've seen drop down to, and I can only catch it when it happens to see, is during streaming or long uploads (ex: Uploading large files). I've seen is bounce between 0Kbs to around 2Mbs. Once it's stable, OBS plays catchup and bounces between 6Mbs to over 7Mbs until it's caught up from it's cached backlog, and it's back to around 4Mbs. My mikrotik, when I'm streaming and winbox is up to glance at, also shows the sudden upload decrease, showing that nothing else on my network is taking priority of the upload, also the download looking fine, on the WAN port.

Just like when I had packet loss issues, the modem, pass through cable modem, only has one port, and no real way to just leave a single computer on the modem and run constant tests until the issues happen. And that's a big When. I have yet to determine a pattern, as it's harder to see without a consistent load.

During the months of data packet issues, I swapped my Netgear Nighthawk out for a Routerboard Mikrotik. As my work dabbles in Mikrotiks from time to time (depending on the use and the client), I had some experience. Since then, I've stayed with the Mikrotik, as I've been happier with the better control. My ISP on the other hand hates it when mentioned, and says it's over kill for a residential setup. I'm not doing anything that complicated, I just enjoy the better firewall rule control, and able to see, per port, data throughput.

The ISP is Suddenlink, and I'm in rural NW Oklahoma. At least an hour or so drive from cities like Enid or Woodward. The only Suddenlink office in the area, has been closed to the office for years. Calling support has not gotten far, either I'm asked to go to an office location, an hour or so drive away, or schedule a tech out. As you may guess, the tech would test for a few minutes, and say no issues, at least currently.

I'm half tempted to just schedule a tech out, and ask them to look at the node, and check for details around X times, that had the sudden upload throttling. Though I feel this idea would not get very far.

Any suggestions on gathering intel on the issues?

I have been putting off buying a new router/upgrading my home long enough.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 02:54 PM PDT

Over the last year my internet has been going to the dogs. I have a 1200+ square foot house with a main floor, basement, garage, and big backyard. When we first moved in everything worked great, but now we lose signal every night and depending on which part of the house, signal can be hit or miss.

The current setup is Motorola Surfboard SB6141, Buffalo WZR-1750DHP with DD-WRT, Netgear ex6100, TP-Link unmanaged 8 port switch, and an old Rocketfish power extender.

I had an issue with the line coming in my house a little over 6 months ago which fixed some issues, but not the signal issue. To which i think my router is going out and i am in need of replacing it.

I know DD-WRT is hit-or-miss with people, but for a hobbyist networker, like myself, it gets what i need done. Here is how i am currently using DD-WRT.

    • 2 Physical networks (2.4GHz & 5GHz)
    • 4 virtual (3 2.4GHz & 1 5GHz)
    • 2 VLANS, 1 for my family stuff and 1 for our roommate.
    • Assigned IPs where I can
    • Port forwarding
    • QoS setup

QUESTION: What do I need to buy to keep a similar setup?

I am not afraid to get something new or different.

    MUSTS

    1. Separate network for roommate
    2. Separate network for guests
    3. Reach all parts of the house

I am not worried about the backyard or garage at this time but if the solution gets me good signal there that's a BIG+.

I have looked into Unifi systems, but want to make sure it is my best option. My budget is up-to $500.

Note: if there is a better sub for me to push this too, please let me know and i will x-post or move it there.
