Instead of typing out ip addresses of my home network, how can I type in the name of the device?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 07:21 PM PDT

Instead of going to 192.168.1.1 for my router, I'd like to just say browse to "homerouter" or "nas" or "pihole". I'm getting to the point where I have way to many devices and I can't remember what the ips are.

Gotta be an easy way, but perhaps I'm googling the wrong thing.

    Setting up Gigabit switch

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:06 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am having trouble setting up my network. Devices 1,3, and 4 are all working correctly. But my steam link device 2 can not find my PC Device 4. I know there is an issue with the ethernet switch. It is a netgear model GS108. Any advice is helpful while I continue to try fixes.

MoCA vs. Cat 6 install — Pros and Cons

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:19 AM PDT

Hi all — A penny for your thoughts. I'm wrestling with whether to go with a MoCA wired network or have Cat 6 installed throughout my home.

MoCA 2.0 seems to deliver near gigabit networking, and MoCA 2.5 should punch through gigabit and deliver > 2 Gbps for devices that can handle it.

If installing Cat 6 was easy I'd probably have done it but now. There don't seem to be any installers who focus on installing home networks. The businesses I've found are mostly AV installers who specialize in wall mounting flat screen TVs. Or "IT support" businesses who focus more on removing viruses from home computers or replacing hard drives. I'm not confident in these businesses. Or network install pros who only deal with commercial jobs.

If I spent more time on it I'm pretty sure I could find a good installer. It's just annoyingly hard.

On the MoCA side, one disadvantage I see is needing a MoCA adapter at every endpoint. This isn't a huge problem, but it means having an adapter with three cables at every endpoint: coax to the wall, Cat 6 to the device (e.g. a "Smart" TV or streaming box), and power.

Am I correct in my understanding the MoCA, unlike Powerline, typically achieves close to its advertised bitrate? (maybe 800 Mbps or so)

    Thanks for your feedback.

    ------

Note 1: I'm referring to Cat 6 because that's my default now, even for patch cables going to 1 GbE devices. Cat 6 cables are cheap, and 5 or 10 years from now I'd prefer my assorted cables to all be Cat 6, not Cat 5e.

Note 2: MoCA 2.5 adapters are now available, as someone from goCoax announced here a couple of months ago. See here.

Need help bypassing CGNAT to use Xbox on 4G

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:04 PM PDT

Hi all, really hoping someone can help me out. Been a long few days trying to get this working.

The aim is to replace our current BT broadband with a 4G LTE setup as we get a considerably faster and more reliable connection with it. I initially purchased the Huawei B618 router, all seemed good until I went to play some Xbox...

The first live chat and round of research led me to the conclusion that i'll only be given a private ip from any mobile carrier, meaning my NAT is always strict and basically unplayable. Using a VPN seemed to be the next most recommended solution. The popular VPN's only appeared to work with OpenVPN, so I will return the Huawei router and have since purchased the TP-Link Archer MR600.

Some time later I came across this forum thread that is somewhat relevant , they suggested having the 4G router supply another router with a connection through ethernet WAN then running the VPN on the second regular router. This made slight progress, I was getting NAT type moderate but with either Upnp or double NAT issues.

No combination of upnp, port forwarding or DMZ was working fully. At this point I was trialing NordVPN, I now also have a PureVPN + port forwading account. They advertised as being able to configure CGNAT but im still unsure how, live chat werent much help.

So as of now I have the TP-Link 4G router supply a connection to my Asus DSL-AC68U that is using OpenVPN. The Xbox is then connected to the Asus network. The Asus router is in a DMZ on the TP-Link. I have forwarded ports; 80, 3074, 53, 88, 3544, 500, 4500 on PureVPN. Disabled NAT on the Asus router and even tried putting the Xbox in a DMZ.

Apologies for being long winded, new to this networking, just really need some help

TLDR - Using a 4g LTE router I would like to play my xbox with at least NAT type moderate

    NAS device recommendations

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 04:46 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the place to ask. Looking for NAS device recommendations. I am going to primarily be using it for photos and videos. Would like to be able to transfer and view photos and videos remotely from my smartphone. Also would like to be able to use Raid 1. As far as budget goes, I would like to keep it under $200 for a diskless device.

Connecting to a WiFi connection with another router to provide LAN connection?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 03:58 PM PDT

First, I must say I've tried searching both r/HomeNetworking as well as Google, and can't find an answer. I worried my goal might not be possible.

I recently sold my house, and in the mean time of looking for a new house, I've moved in with dad. He currently has a ISP provided Modem/Router all-in-one with a good wifi network. My computer doesn't have a wireless card in it. Running a cat5 cable from his router to my computer isn't an option, it's too far away.

Ultimately, what I would like to do is to set up my Asus RT-AC86U (AC2900) next to my computer, and somehow use the Asus router to wirelessly connect to my dad's Wifi network, and then supply internet to my computer by connecting a cat5 cable to my computer from the Asus router. So basically using the Asus as a Wifi relay. Is this even possible? If so, please help! Any links with more information or a tutorial would awesome.

If what I'm trying to do isn't possible, would there be a better way on going about this? Thanks!

[help] My router sends lan and WiFi, but won’t connect to the internet.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 06:09 PM PDT

My router sends lan and WiFi, but won't connect to the internet.

My lan works and the router is broadcasting 2.4 and 5ghz but no internet. The globe is red on the quantum Gateway router. When I go into the routers admin, it shows all my lan connected devices but on the left side it says "Ethernet/coax disconnected" when I click on it, it then shows "coax: connected". This all leads me to believe it getting a coax signal and passing lan, but for some reason it's not receiving internet. I had Verizon reset the ont, I also reset the router and renewed the dhcp lease.

This all happened when I unplugged the router for 2 mins to paint the wall. Any suggestions

Port forwarding only works occasionally [help]

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 08:25 PM PDT

I use Huawei Echolife HG8245Q2 modem/router and when I setup port forwarding to host my applications and make it accessible to the internet, it does not work all the time. Sometimes I need to re-assign the ports again over and over until it works. Restarting the router does not fix anything either. Enabling UPnP on router works perfectly most of the time, but in my case I cannot afford to enable it for security reasons.

On router UPnP logs, the ports shown match exactly what I had previously assigned on port forwarding, and it annoys me so much as I could not find any legitimate reason as to why it would not work on manual port forwarding when instead it works on automatic port forwarding (UPnP).

Is there a way to fix my issue? Why do I have to keep rebooting/re-enable ports until it works, is that normal?

    Student needs wifi help!!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 08:24 PM PDT

Hey guys I joined this sub today and am looking for help. I'm pretty tech savvy and know enough to be confident with networking. Anyways, I recently moved to canada to play junior hockey, and I'm living in a dorm with terrible internet. We're talking 500 kB/s and the wifi kicks me off every hour or so. I'm doing online high school and need some better stuff. I've looked into portable wifi/hot spot devices you can buy? I'm willing to spend a little money if it means I'll get better connection.

Basically I'm here to ask what my options are for getting a faster more reliable wifi with my current situation.

    Thank you in advance.

    Where to start?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 08:20 PM PDT

I am beginning to study Cybersecurity/Network Administration and wanted to start at home so to speak. I think I have a pretty decent setup as far as hardware, Linksys Velop router and a CM500 Netgear modem. I have done some advanced set up using the Linksys app, but wasn't sure where to go from there. Considering using some static IPs, a server for computer backup/storage, or other advanced customization to optimize the networks speed/security and also get some first hand experience as I learn. Usually have 10-15 devices connected.

    Nighthawk 1150V + Xfinity = No Voicr

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 07:47 PM PDT

Just got the 1150V. But plugging in my phone doesn't work. This modem is advertised to work with Xfinity Voice however.

I called Xfinity who didn't have a clue.

I then went into my router settings and it looks like it's "disabled"?

Need help here! Any reasons that I should check into. Thanks.

Is there anyway to see/monitor which devices are using the most bandwidth? / What would cause a recent decrease in WiFi speeds?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:28 AM PDT

I have a better than average understanding with computers/networks but and certainly not an IT/network pro. I am struggling to find the cause of a recent wifi speed reduction.

My internet speeds are supposed to be 500/mb download and 50/mb upload, supplied via fiber and connected to a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 w/ 2.4ghz and 5ghz network enabled. The 2.4ghz supports up to 600mb/s and the 5ghz supports up to 1,300/mb/s.

I have 3 security camera devices attached to the 2.4ghz at all times (but they arent active 24/7). On the 5ghz I have 2 Chromecasts, 2 smartphones, and 2 MacBook pros. The Chromecasts aren't typically turned on, so primarily it's 2 phones and 2 computers.

Typically I can get 480/mb down and 45/mb up with both my phone and MacBook via WiFi. However, as of late my wifi internet speeds have been very slow - 50mbps down and 40mbps upload while right next to the router. However, when I run speed tests with my MacBook plugged directly into the fiber box (via thunderbolt port w/ Ethernet adapter) I still get about 480mbps down and 45mbps upload which points to the router being the culprit.

I have checked my routers settings to make sure no other devices are connected to it (it is password protected.) Rebooted fiber modem and router, checked for updates, disconnected all other devices other than 1 smartphone and 1 MacBook pro and still cant get the speeds to return to previous levels.

Does anyone know what could be the cause of this recent wifi speed loss/how I can determine what the cause is?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Upgrading the parents' home setup with Actiontec MoCA

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 06:45 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

So I am currently trying to upgrade my parents' home network. We have 1 Arris tm1602 modem in the central kitchen area, connected to 1 D-Link DIR-868L router. About 14 wireless devices connect to this via WiFi throughout the whole house (upstairs, downstairs, and basement).

In the basement I have 1 D-Link DAP1650 hooked up as an extender directly under the kitchen. This is mainly only connected to an xbox via ethernet (i know, this is basically the worst of both worlds but my xbox wifi doesn't pick up the signal alone).

To alleviate connectivity issues, I plan on buying an Actiontec 802.11ac Desktop WiFi Extender with Bonded Moca

as well as a pair of actiontec bonded moca adaptors.

Now to save myself some time and returns. I just want to know if the following will work to reduce network problems:

    1. connecting 1x actiontec MoCA adaptor to my modem/router as from what I read, optimum does not support MoCA (so would this still work since its an optimum provided modem/router?)

    2. connecting the second MoCA adaptor to a coax in the basement and then to the D-Link extender for full(er) wifi in the basement without taking up any bandwidth from the main router.

    3. connecting the MoCA extender upstairs via coax and then 4-5 of the wifi devices + my PC and xbox via ethernet(FINALLY! this should give me similar speeds compared to if i was connecting to the modem/router directly yes?)

My main concerns are any issues that might arise with optimum since it seems everyone uses these with Verizon. Also, this video recommends using a POE filter to the modem and main coax line, i dont totally get why but if thats the consensus, what's another 14 bucks after spending 300+. If there are too many issues that you can see coming with this, any better alternatives are appreciated as well. Thank you!

LAG on LAN, how is this possible?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 08:49 AM PDT

    Hi,

A few weeks ago i started to have HUGE lag spikes while playing LAN games with my friends (Warcraft 3). If i host my friends have lag and if one of my friends host im the only one that have lag. It also happens while playing with only one friend.

The way we are connected is using a router (E1200) as switch and before that i have a router:

    Router (WR941HP) - cable - router as switch (E1200) - cable to PC's

I did a pingtest between the host pc and another one and when the game lags the pingtest shows 1ms everytime.

I did a tracert3 test between the host pc and another one and when the game lags it shows 0bits/sec when the game lags. So i think here is the problem, but im not sure since i have no idea how to use tracert3 or how to interpret that. The command i used was tracert3 -c IP -t 10000 and in the other pc tracert3 -s

I tested with other cables from switch to PC and same problem, i dont have a cable to change the Router to Switch one but if im correct i think the connection between the PCs should never go far back to the router, only to the Switch, but im not sure about this. Can you confirm this?

What test should i do or how do i fix this problem?

Thanks for reading and if anyone can help me it will be very appreciated!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:21 PM PDT

I just ran 16 cables through my house and needed know where they went because I pulled multiple at a time.

I'm waiting until Monday for my patch panel to come in and then I will punch the cable runs in. I wanted to have each rooms' connections next to each other on the panel, because why not. But I didn't want to have to terminate each one just to cut the connector off.

Bridging old storage barn converted to guest house about 30 yards extra distance needed

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:59 AM PDT

I've got an old storage building, doing a low budget conversion to a guest house. My main house to the guest house is about 50 yards.

So from the guest house I need to walk 30 yards to get any signal. I remember doing something similar in college, I had a laptop with a pcmcia or usb wifi with antenna (which also had a power adapter) this let me reach the free wifi at the science library, I then shared the network connection of my laptop to my router.

Looking for Custom Firmware recommendation (and links) for Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:29 PM PDT

Hello, I could really use some help with flashing custom firmware to my router. Main feature I need is network traffic monitoring on a per IP basis, I need to know how much data each device is using per month. Seems like Merlin would be good for me (if it's even compatible with my router?) but I can't find download links or instructions for my router. Would Merlin be good for me or is there something else you would recommend? I'm preparing to install Tomato but have found many reports that it didn't work with R8000. I have strong network knowledge and intermediate to advanced knowledge with technology in general, but I have never flashed custom firmware so I need some help. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

    Need router with Wifi fail-over

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Some people got in quite a tizzy over my last post because it was too long so i'll try redo this and cut to the chase.

I've looked through a lot of posts here about dual-WAN, LTE, multip-isp fail-overs and whatnot, but they don't seem to fit what i'm looking for.

I have 1 ISP, and I'm running a powerline adapter to a bunch of networked/small server gear (Can't run a 20m cable through the apartment). During power outages the UPSs can't keep powerline adapters running so i'm looking for a router that would support switching into a wireless receiver mode from my wifi (AP mode) as a fail-over whenever my power goes out.

I'm ideally looking for something gigabit, but I 100% understand network performance will suffer during fail-over to wifi periods. I just don't want the hardwire connection to suffer because of w/e I put in, as I am running a fiber 750 up/down connection.

Thanks everyone for any suggestions! I'm already feeling dread at the though of having to get some strange business grade router, but if that's all that can cut it, so-be-it.

TP-LINK EAP245 access points — Do they need separate controllers like Unifi?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:32 PM PDT

Ahoy — I'm shopping the TP-LINK EAP245 V3 access points. They're similar to Ubiquiti UniFi APs. Question: Do they need controller PCs like the Ubiquitis? Does anyone know or is anyone able to determine such from the TP-LINK product page?

This might be a money quote (from the product page), but I'm not clear on what it means: "Free cloud centralized management and Omada app..."

Maybe the cloud management means no controller PC?

    Thanks!

p.s. I realize that the Ubiquitis only need a controller PC for certain features, based on your answers on another thread.

WEP or unsecured hotspot on windows 8?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:11 PM PDT

I have a device that doesn't play nice with my router. It can only connect to a WEP or unsecured connection. Thus, I am trying to create a WEP or unsecured hotspot with my computer so I can share the internet with my device. (Yes I am aware of the security risks of doing this.)

Anyone have any suggestions? I know how to make a hosted network with the whole command line netsh wlan thing, but it doesn't seem to allow me to change my security type.

I've been looking everywhere for any software or something that can allow this, so at this point I'm willing to try almost anything. The only thing I can't do is buy hardware, as I'm ridiculously broke.

Can I make my internet any faster (AUS)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:44 AM PDT

We have ADSL2+ infrastructure and receive 5Mbps download and 0.6Mbps upload (on good days).

Is there any way we would be able to make our internet any faster at all?

Our ADSL connection to the wall is quite dodgy, as the patch cable comes out of a hole in the wall, where the terminal it was supposed to be terminated to has been removed. Two of the four seperate wires from inside the cable then terminate into a 'converter' that converts 4 input wires to some strange connector. The wires are red, black, white, and green (the white and green are terminated while the red and black hang out in midair). It is then converted from that physical connector to an RJ12 connector that has only 2 pins. That is then 'filtered' by a device that splits the RJ12 connector to 2 RJ45 connectors (one is DSL and the other is 'phone').

The DSL side is then connected to our modem/router with an old RJ 45 patch cable. Our modem is a Fritz!box 7360 by AVM.

Is there any way that my internet speeds could be boosted with better equipment?

Filing claim for damaged equipment plugged into UPS. Anyone actually get money back?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 07:22 AM PDT

We were visted by the God of Thunder a couple nights ago with one of the gnarliest lightning strikes I've ever experienced. Still assessing the damage but so far have lost sb8200 modem, usg router, 8 port poe switch, a Firetv, and just discovered this morning that my hdmi port no longer works on my pc video card. Luckily I had spare equipment laying around and got things back up and going in a day or so but it still sucks to lose that much equipment in one fell swoop. Any of you have luck filing a claim and actually getting money back under similar circumstances? Any way I need to word things?
