A Better Router suitable for heavy torrenting Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:26 AM PDT Hello folks, i have an asus ac1200g+ and when using qbittorrent most connections get dropped after 400 simultaneous connections/nodes.. therefore i have to set "Global Maximum Number of Connections" to 400 in the torrent client so i can still browse the web without images not showing up and etc.. What are the routers i should look at that can handle higher numbers? I have a gigabit connection. EDIT: I have taken a look at edgerouter X and ER-4.. and some questions came to my mind..

Switching my router + modem to a different house that has a 2 in 1 Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:01 PM PDT So I had Cox in my previous house, I used a router and modem rather than their 2 in 1 they can provide. I moved to a new house that already has internet through a 2 in 1 (netgear), would I be able to use my router and modem under this new internet? Sorry if I'm lacking in my terminology, I don't know much about networking, thank you! [link] [comments] |
SSH to RPI via Android Hotspot Posted: 25 Aug 2019 12:47 PM PDT Hey I am trying to connect my android phone to my RPI. I created a hotspot with my phone and connected the RPI to it. After that i looked up the local ip of the RPI and tried to ssh into it but it does not work. I cannot see the RPI using an ip scanner. Maybe my phone does not allow any communication between host and client. What can i do? PS: Sorry, english is not my foreign language. [link] [comments] |

3 floor house looking for advice Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:38 PM PDT I'm a complete network novice and looking for advice. We purchased a new home that is three floors, it's going to have substantially more devices than we currently have and I'm not sure where to begin. We currently have the Netgear XR500 and CM1000 modem. The house is a new build and will have two xboxes and a PC needing to be hardwired on the third floor, two TVs on the second floor and a tv on the ground floor. There will also four cell phones and two iPads as we will have two extra adults in the house. I keep seeing people recommending to hardwire as many devices as possible but I'm not sure what equipment I would need to accomplish that as our router only has four Ethernet slots, any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated! Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:24 PM PDT I don't know if this is the right sub to post this on but I figure you guys know a lot about networking and probably have the best chance of helping me out. So basically my dad set up our network so that I'd your mac address isn't in the system you wont be able to connect and get an ip and what not. So he made himself administrator over the network and can see everything over all devices. He takes the assigned ip address and names it so he knows who is who. Example ip 192.XXX.X.XX is my phone etc. And he can see what sites I've connected to etc. This is set up on all devices in the household. I'm wondering if a VPN will be able to hide myself from him and let me do whatever I want without having to be watched and controlled all the time. Will using a VPN shield my searches and activity from him? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Looking for Advice of Wireless Router Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:28 PM PDT Currently, I have an ASUS RT-N66R that I have been using for multiple years. I have started to notice some issues with router connectivity. This is a very new occurrence. The device load/demand on the router has stayed the same for the lifetime of the router. So, I am currently looking for advice on a new wireless router with roughly the same performance. My budget is Between $100-$130. I have a pretty good understanding of how to set up my networks but prefer to have a UI that is still easy if someone who has less knowledge than me needs to make changes. What can you recommend for me? [link] [comments] |
Total packet loss every 6 minutes exactly Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:47 PM PDT Hey guys, I have been trying to figure out this issue for months and can not seem to understand what is going on so hopefully you will be able to give me some insight. Setup:
The Problem: When I first got and installed by EdgeRouter X i noticed i was having odd lag spikes while watching videos or playing games. I used traceroute and later ping plotter to see that exactly every 6 minutes i would drop all packets for 1-2 seconds then everything would come back. I tried unplugging things one at a time, connecting to the wall direct changing routers always the same issue. Eventually after some deep diving online I found a recommendation to use QOS and throttle my bandwidth down and up. I did that 70mbs/70mbs This fixed the issue! I was bummed to lose the extra speed but happy i no longer had the lag. I would have been OK with this but recently I bought a netgate pfsense router and the issue was back! I tried my same fix but for some reason it didn't work this time. I would love to fix the root issue but even more i would love to understand what is going on. Thanks for any help you can offer, Amateur home network enthusiast [link] [comments] |
Help with port forwarding (trivial I know) Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:47 PM PDT Hey guys, so I am aware this is probably the easiest thing you can do on a router next to plugging it in, but this has me stumped. Recently switched ISP's and have a new router, with that in mind I aim to port forward with that router for a game server., Ive done it before, dozens of times, with no problem but this router seemingly wont have it. Here is a screeny of the settings, and as a disclaimer I have gone through all wan interfaces with no luck, if it helps this is also being hosted from a VM on my server. [link] [comments] |
Best router for small house, high internet speeds, 1 user? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:53 PM PDT I'm moving into my first house soon and need some advice on routers and maybe modems. My ISP is spectrum and the plan I'm getting claims to offer 400+ Mbps down, no cable tv, no landline. My ISP's policy is that they'll provide a pre-configured router for a monthly fee, but I also have the option of buying a third-party router. I'm not keen on paying an additional monthly fee to my ISP, so what would you all suggest for routers? I'm not too concerned about wi-fi coverage if that's a big factor - my house is fairly small, just over 1,000 sq. ft. and it's just me for the time being. As far as modems go, my ISP claims they'll supply a modem that has been "certified for optimal performance" free of charge. Here's the info on approved modems from my ISP's website, would you all suggest buying my own or just going with what they give me? If there's a better place for this or if it's been asked recently let me know. I did some searching on google but found a lot of conflicting info. If you need any additional info let me know. Will a new router help me get better ping? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:45 PM PDT Right now im renting an xfinity router. I get 20-30 ping in most of my games. If i were to buy a net gear nighthawk or similar router would I see an improvement? [link] [comments] |
Best WiFi mesh system for wireless roaming? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 06:56 PM PDT I just ordered an orbi but now I'm worried that I won't get a seamless handoff walking through the house. Is there any way to accomplish this right now? [link] [comments] |
Cat 6 cable not working on an unmanaged switch Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:59 PM PDT I've been helping upgrade the wired/wireless infrastructure at my fraternity and running into an issue I can't seem to figure out. We have a cable modem/router that I plug a mesh router into (Orbi AC3000) for wifi coverage. When I plug in an unmanaged switch (Netgear GS316) using the Cat6 cable we crimped ourselves to either the cable modem or mesh, it doesn't work at all. The exact same Cat6 cable works when plugging directly into either the cable modem or mesh router with my laptop. To further test, when plugging in the Cat6 cables nothing lights up at all, whereas if I plug in both ends of a Cat5e in the switch, bot ends show up as having a signal. Can anybody tell me what am I doing wrong? [link] [comments] |
Netgear r7000 is it bridge mode or ap to have it connected to another wifi router. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:52 PM PDT I want to use my netgear r7000 to receive signal from another wifi router, but in the settings page there's no option to connect to another wifi, basically I wanna use it with my laptop instead of my laptop using its wifi chip, I'd like to use the router, but confused on what mode it should be on. Any ideas, would greatly appreciate it. thanks. edit: it'll all be wireless, I'm not able to connect both routers via a ethernet line. [link] [comments] |
Need help understanding if I can get better wifi with new router + modem in apartment Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:20 PM PDT So I currently live in an apartment building that provides wifi and an ethernet port in each room. I live with 4 others and the wifi here is so bad. I wanted to buy a new router, and then realized I will prob need a new modem too in order to be able to access internet and have my own private wifi in the apartment. My roommate keeps asking me a question that i don't know the answer to. I've never set up home network. How do I even set up a new modem? Do you plug an ethernet cable from wall to modem for it to work? IDK. Based on this, my roommate asked me if the ethernet is plugged into the wall, wouldn't it take the connection from the other router? IDK. SO my question is, even though there is wifi, and a router in the apartment, if I wanted to get a new modem and router, what is needed to be done, and will it work? Will it work well if even if there is another router, and will it work better because i plan to get a good router and modem. [link] [comments] |
Question about rewiring coax, help me understand what I'm looking at and what I need Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:20 PM PDT So we live in a mobile home that has coax running to 6 different rooms. For the first year we lived here we only had working cable in one room: the living room. Our dining room and master bedroom where we have TVs never worked. Bedrooms 1, 2 and 3, we never ever tested. We had Mediacom out a few weeks ago and he said that something under our trailer wasn't hooked up but now he hooked it up and the coax should be active in all the rooms. He did not elaborate on what exactly he hooked up. He had a nifty gadget and tested in our master bedroom and said it was working. He didn't test any others with his tester, but we do have working cable now in the master bedroom and the dining room. These I think are MOCA connections through the Tivo boxes, but obviously those coax outlets are active or that wouldn't work, right? Well today I looked under to see what I was dealing with because I actually want to relocate the connection in the dining room, and I want to add one more in the family room where the computer will be. And this is what I saw: https://imgur.com/a/ATR3ZDO I think what I'm looking at is this:
What I suspect is the one cable coming out of (B) was the one running to our living room. That seems to make the most logical sense. I can only assume then that all he did was connect the other cable from (B) to (C). The lines are labeled with those clothes pins. There is writing on the clothes pins. Either you can't read the writing, or is vague, like "room 3". So I have no idea where each of those goes, and then obviously with only 5 cables, one of the smaller bedrooms isn't hooked up. How can I tell which of these lines is going where, so I can label them properly? And can anything be done to simplify what is going on down there? Like, I have seen 8-way splitters online. Would I need something like that, to cut out the daisy chain? I have seen also there are things to consider like signal loss. Thanks for looking and I appreciate your help. EDIT: Formatting. Advice Please: Best Decently Priced Router for 980 ft 2 Story Bungalow Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:49 PM PDT I'm just going to first say that I'm not very great with networking, I know very little so I may be a little infuriating (sorry in advance). Now, I'm looking for a decently priced router for a 980 ft 2 story bungalow. My ISP, which is Sasktel (I live in Canada) a few years ago gave me a Alcatel-Lucent Modem, and an Actiontec router (2.4 G only). About a year or two ago, they came in and installed a Actiontec WCB3000N extender (2.4 G and 5G) and I believe turned the original routers network off, while still connecting the extender to the router. Now the extender acts as the only router in the whole house. It is downstairs as there really is no good spot upstairs to put the extender. I want to replace the old Actiontec router, it is in the basement in a corner with concrete and metal fridges, etc near it which I'm sure is not ideal. Can I keep the old modem in the same spot and use an Ethernet cable to put the new router where the Extender is now? Would this actually improve anything? Some suggestions would be highly appreciated as I don't exactly know if what I want to do would be even beneficial. [link] [comments] |
Getting AT&T Gigafiber to my cat5e and/or coax Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:33 PM PDT So - I bought a new house a couple of years ago - it's a brand new construction. The house has coax and ethernet (cat5e terminated in RJ11) in most rooms. I also have AT&T gigapower (fiber) - when they did the install, they took one of the terminated RJ11 lines, and re-terminated it in RJ45 and that runs to the AT&T modem - so now there's internet in that one room. I've setup that box to bypass its router functionality and it goes to a router I control - which gives my house wireless and wired connections for that one room. I'd like to get to a point where I can re-terminate the rest of the RJ11 lines as RJ45 (since they're all CAT5e) - but the lines for the rest of the rooms (both Coax and CAT5e) are dangling out side the side of my house, disconnected, except for the one that AT&T rigged up. So I'm struggling with how I fix the issue of getting those remaining lines all rigged up given the current setup. I've created a diagram to show where I'm at: https://www.lucidchart.com/documents/view/4da036a4-512d-1735-82af-2f2b0a00093e/0_0 I haven't bought all of the MoCA devices and I'd eventually like to move some of the gear out of the craft room and potentially add 1-2 more wireless routers for more coverage (one in the back part of the house, maybe one in the backyard)... but I'm wondering:
Even if I figure this out, not all the rooms have ethernet drops, so I might still have to do Coax for some areas (Game room and the living room)... Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
How to I wire an apartment and connect to ISP Posted: 24 Aug 2019 10:09 PM PDT Hi, I have been requested from my friend to wire his appartment(10 flats + cctv's) with either ethernert cables or fiber for internet. Current Scenario : They all use internet individually and on average they spend around 1300-1500/family/month. He would like to bring down the cost. But I am not sure that how do I connect it to internet. He say's that the family would be able to pay the bills individually (taxing it seems). Is there an option where ISP provides that. Initially, I thought of getting the costly plan from the ISP(around 3k INR) and link to the router and manage everything within it but due to his requirement I am clueless. what do I do now ? I stay in India Also I cannot share the 3k plan to ultiple users because of the Licence limitations(cannot share individual connection). Its ilegal to do so Please help me how this could be solved or how your country is dealing with this type of setup. Your thoughts would be much appreciated Thank you, Teja [link] [comments] |
Beginner questions about apartment wifi Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:24 PM PDT Hi, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to electronics. I live in an apartment complex with FREE wifi shared by 12 different apartments. I have no access to the modem and the connection is very slow. What are some ways I can speed it up? Would buying my own wireless router and connecting it wirelessly to the free wifi network make the signal stronger in my apartment? Or does it not work that way? Thanks in advance everyone! Port forwarding not working? (Archer c50) Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:18 PM PDT I swear I never have luck with port forwarding. Maybe I just never understood it enough, but it seems no matter what PC or router combination I've used in my life, port forwarding never actually opens the port, for say, hosting a server. Can anyone review my settings and help me understand? My local IP is correct, its reserved to this PC's MAC address. The ports are correct. But alas, using any online checker, with my public IP that it detects, I cannot actually "open" the port. Link to settings screenshot:https://i.imgur.com/gh8rjcW.png [link] [comments] |
Tired of disconnecting while gaming, wondering what is the best course of action to fix it Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:13 PM PDT Let me preface this by saying I am not the most tech-savvy guy; I am not familiar with all the tech-terms/acronyms that I've found in a lot of the posts on here so I was hoping somebody could help me out while simultaneously "dumbing it down" for me so I know what you're talking about... Alright, so my girlfriend and I just moved into a new place and we've got Xfinity as our service provider. When we got everything set-up, I believe we ordered their version of a premium package as far as the internet speeds were concerned. As I do not have my own router/modem (honestly not sure if a router and a modem are the same thing, I'm sorry), we decided to rent one from Xfinity. I've since tested the speeds on my Xbox One, as I am now running a wired connection and the speeds are fantastic; my download speed is sitting around 500mb/s~ which is a significant improvement than what I'm used to. My issue I'm having is even with these speeds, the internet seems really spotty at times. Sometimes it works great and I have no problems, and then there are other (much more frustrating) times when I'll continually disconnect from gaming online with my buddies or I'll get booted from an online lecture mid-way through, and I end up having to be "that guy" who is constantly joining and leaving the online classroom. It happens both with my Xbox One (wired connection) and my laptop (wireless connection) so I fear the router/modem may be the culprit. So lately I have been looking into some routers - specifically the Netgear Nighthawk routers - and I was wondering if that's something I can:
I have been looking at the specs for the Nighthawk routers and they all look awesome, but I want to be sure it will help me with constantly dropping connections or "lagging out", or is there a maybe cheaper option that will do the same thing? I've seen something like 1900 mb/s on the one model, and I don't even think Xfinity is giving me that much internet so I'm not sure I need that, but I desperately want a seriously reliable connection and I want to make sure I'm making the right decisions/purchases. Sorry about the wall of text, just trying to explain the best I can: TL,DR; I'm tired of lagging out and I wanna make some upgrades, I'm not tech-savvy... explain like I'm five and help pls [link] [comments] |
As promised. My initial review of the start with 3 Eero Pro's with Spectrum's 400mbps wifi. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 08:38 AM PDT Been in our new home a little under 2 months and I knew we needed more than the Spectrum router could provide. Received the Eero package in the last week and just set things up this morning. All pretty much as expected through our 3,000-3,500 square foot home (no hardwiring at all) including back patio. Nearest the Eero as the router is 400-475mbps. As we go further away about 300mbps. Furthest from furthest Eero Pro approximately 200mbps. So far so good as speeds most critical to me are necessary nearest the 1st Eero Pro. Throughout the home 200-300mbps is fine as long as it remains stable. My primary reason for this was lack of hardwiring, and stability throughout the home. IF it stays this way for now? Lovely. As I add on to make this a "semi" smart home with necessary home security. Until a more stable system that has higher speeds comes out in the future (IF I even need it then) this will work fine if it stays as stable as I've read.
If there's any issues with this system (and I've read them to be common) is.. Having some 2.4ghz devices connected. I know their archaic and there are a few options to improve them on my network. So that's what I've begun to do. Having some of these devices connect to Eero Pro's at the wrong speeds and not to the closest Eero Pro. I've read at times one can just disconnect then reconnect to get to the closest node. Is there much more I can do? This isn't much of an issue right now but when I do connect additional devices I can see where some people find it frustrating if their device doesn't connect to the best option. I've heard in many cases to give it a few days, which is my plan. I haven't truly tested this systems abilities yet. I've been connecting more devices this morning. As I keep adding to it I simply need a stable foundation to work with for now. I think/hope Eero is that foundation to create my smart home, security, etc..I guess time will tell if Eero is everything I've been told, & researched about for now. I won't be returning Spectrum's router for at least a few months if at all, to be sure this system works well longer term. Others that have Spectrum did you send back the router after starting this system? Hopefully it won't be needed. I figure if I want to I can always get a powerful router of my own and use the Eero Pro's in bridge mode. I don't want that to be needed however. This novice now has to slowly add to his home now. We'll see how it goes. [link] [comments] |
Rogers Hitron CGN3ACSMAR constantly disconnects Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:42 PM PDT we have the standard router/modem provided by rogers with a computer connected by Ethernet and all other devices connected by wifi. i find that most times when turning on my computer or streaming or just when ever it feels like the internet just stops working. some times it fixes its self other times i have to restart it. (lost internet at this point of writing my post). what are some recommendations for fixing it. i am willing to buy new hardware and could use some recommendations for that 2. [link] [comments] |
