Avoid used Cisco hardware - especially newer ones

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 10:12 AM PDT

    https://www.ifixit.com/News/cisco-is-making-it-more-difficult-to-use-pre-owned-hardware

Without telling their customers, networking hardware manufacturer Cisco has drastically changed the way it sells products. Where once you were able to buy and sell used hardware at your leisure, its new Smart Licensing System—which has rolled out to a majority of Cisco's products—decouple licenses from the hardware in an extremely user-unfriendly way.

I know this subreddit is towards home networking applications, but does anyone use Cisco hardware - which is usually enterprise (and they used to own Linksys until they sold it off to Belkin/Foxconn) - on home networking setups?

"Upgraded" WiFi AP. Worse Performance With Archer C8

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 07:10 PM PDT

Greetings! Family is away and I took the opportunity to swap out my old Asus RT-N66U with a second hand TP-Link Archer C8. Was reeeeaaaaally looking forward to enjoying that beamforming.

-Asus was AP only and the Archer is doing the same.

-Both were manually set channels with almost no neighbor interference.

-Both devices were in the same location.

    -Archer has the latest firmware.

Immediately noticed the Roku menus kind of sucked in my bedroom last night. Tried live TV with WMC on the Xbox 360 (I know, I know.....) Took forever to load and never got a picture. Power cycled everything and same result. I expected more out of the Archer....not less. The Asus has the "WMC Optimize" check box....but does it really do that much?

I wired the Asus back in and everything is back to normal. Really hoping for better performance out of that Archer though.

Should the Archer outperform my Asus or am I uninformed?

    Edit: Bullet pointed a sentence.

Eero Pro vs regular router/AP combo

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 06:29 PM PDT

Hi. I currently have a Linksys router with a Linksys RE9000 access point (hard wired). My house isn't huge, but I struggle with wireless reception because I have plaster walls that appear to have some sort of metal mesh inside them.

My current setup affords me a decent connection throughout the house, but I find that my devices will try and hang on to the original source, even though they may be closer to the other stronger signal. A quick Wi-Fi off and on resolves that issue, but annoying. I have the access point set up with the same SSID, password, band steering enabled, and all of the defaults that should make it work seamlessly. It doesn't.

Do mesh networks like Eero actually work more seamlessly than a router, access point combo?

WiFi speed is cut in half

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 06:47 AM PDT

Hello, I found this subreddit today (thank god) by accident and decided to ask you guys if you have any tips to solve my WiFi problem.

Also, forgive me if I have any grammar issues or bad sentencing since english is not my primary language.

I live in Croatia with my 4 member family and we use T-Com's internet. We are paying around 350 HRK (47€ or 53$) for TV, phone and ADSL internet for speed of 40 MBPS download and 6 MBPS upload. T-Com also provided us with their router (Sercom Speedport Plus).

I used ethernet cables to connect 2 PC's and we use WiFi for our 4 phones and 1 laptop. When using the internet on PC's everything is fine. Speedtest results are a bit better than what we pay for. But as soon as you hop onto WiFi you notice that the speed isn't as good. Speedtest results are fine as usual, but when watching Youtube videos or downloading something, the speed is literally cut in half or more. On my PC's the download rate is ranging from 4.5 to 5.0 MB/s, but on all devices that are connected with WiFi the download rate is ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 MB/s and it is quite frustrating.

I can share some settings of the router which I access through the 192.168.1.1 address. Photos

I have been struggling with this problem for around 2 months without finding a real solution either by myself or on the internet and I am looking to buy a router myself (I was thinking about Asus RT-AC1200G+) if the problem is unsolvable.

If you guys need any more info I will be happy to provide in order to fix this problem.

    Thanks in advance!

Archer T4U wifi adapter connecting to N instead of AC radio

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 09:00 PM PDT

I have an Archer A7 router, and an Archer T4U wifi adapter. I am wondering why the wifi adapter is connecting to the N radio instead of the AC band. This is limiting my speed to about 250-275mbps instead of my full 500mbps that I should be getting from the modem. I need to broadcast a/n/ac mix because not all devices on the network have AC compatibility. Am I missing something? Why is it on the N band and not AC?

Best Powerline Adapter for Gaming and Streaming in 2019?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 08:57 PM PDT

Hi! I am wondering what you guys think is the best powerline adapter for low ping, as well as high download and upload speeds, I want to stream to twitch at either 900p60 or 1080p60. (I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.) My only requirements are that it has to be gigabit and not ethernet, and i really need it to be sub $50. Any suggestions are appreciated. :)

Is downloading and seeding torrents on a router itself a security risk?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 08:20 PM PDT

Asus and other routers feature torrent clients that can download and seed torrents from a USB drive on the router. Is it a substantial security risk? I mean in the sense can a hacker attack the router through this type of activity?

    Router and modem suggestion?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 08:15 PM PDT

We currently have a modem/router from Comcast. I guess it's both in 1 device(?), but it sucks because it only has 2 LAN ports and cost $13 a month. Do I need to buy a router and a modem? Or just one? Because I know routers don't have the coaxial ports but modems do and I'd need one that can support 1000 mbps. Any suggestions?

    Switch by tv??

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 07:38 PM PDT

I have a switch at my router leading to many devices. I'd to have one of those devices be another switch near my tv so i can run one wire to there and then split to the several devices with Ethernet connections in the media console. Does that work with cheap unmanaged switch?

Airport Extreme Suddenly Not Working (Sort of)

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 03:00 PM PDT

Setup: AT&T Fiber Pace 5268AC Router > Apple Aiport Extreme > 4 Port Ethernet Switch

I'm having the absolute hardest time troubleshooting this issue. I have my AT&T Router running my Airport Extreme in DMZPlus mode (i.e. IP Passthrough) so that my Airport does most of the work. Really everything in my house is hardwired except for my phone. I have an NVidia Shield, Xbox and Synology drive all running static IP's etc for a Plex system.

Suddenly though, I came back from a trip and I can't get anything to load hardwire/wifi off the AE. Speed tests show 600mb up/down, I can load Google.com and some AT&T forums pages, but nothing more. If I try and go to Reddit or any of the links on a Google search I got nothing. This is the same on all my devices in the house on both 2.4 and 5ghz. While in the Airport Utility I can see the Internet connection goes between green/amber here and there as well.

I jumped over to the AT&T wifi connection and everything works properly there. I've done both soft and hard resets of the AE. Tried brand new settings and imported settings from before. Chatted with AT&T support who told me everything was fine on their end (which is technically true). All coming to the same issue. Full connection speed tests, but no actual website loads.

I debated just buying a new AE today, but saw they're discontinued. I could probably rotate everything over to using just the AT&T or a new other branded router, but I'd rather just keep my setup since I have no clue what's going on.

Help before I lose my brain. I have a fairly simple setup and I' just out of ideas.

What's the current best cable modem/router (either one unit or two) setup right now for under $150?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 10:49 AM PDT

I'm getting 300Mbps down and 20Mbps up with my new setup and I'd like to get as much out of that as I can. I'm in a 900 sqft, 2 story apartment, but the furthest device we'll have from the router will be about 25 feet and 3 walls away from it.

Thanks in advance for the help!

looking for advice for home network

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 02:30 PM PDT

Hey everybody! I am new here and I just wanted to reach out for some tips/advice for setting up a home network in our new home. In our previous home (2 stories / roughly 2800sq feet) we had 400mbps internet through Spectrum and I set up Google WiFi(3 nodes) and had a relatively smooth and painless experience. We have dozens of smart devices throughout the home and never really had any issues whatsoever. Speeds were fairly consistent throughout the home.

Our new home now has a basement and is quite a bit larger. We had Xfinity gigabit internet installed. The home is also wired w/ cat5 to each of the main bedrooms and living areas. I have the setup as follows: Internet comes in through the basement - into modem - into main google wifi puck - into a switch. From the switch I have cables into a 6 port Ethernet jack that then has the wires throughout the home. I have tried to set up the additional 2 google pucks in every room possible with a wired connection - they all work and show as "wired" but most of them provide a weak signal and wifi speeds directly next to them are sub 100mbps. If i am in the basement directly next to the main google puck I get WiFi speeds of around 400-450.

I certainly didn't expect to get gig speeds over wifi at any spot in the home, but I feel like this is not as good as it should be. If i hardwire my PC directly into any of the bedrooms, I get the full gig speeds. After reading numerous posts it does seem like many people have issues with Google WiFi so I may not be alone. It almost seems that it overrides and defaults the satellite pucks into a wireless setting as opposed to using the backhaul. I am open to getting a new mesh system if necessary.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

    PPPOE Verification (TLDR included)

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 06:07 PM PDT

Got myself a beautiful static IP to help a few of my projects. ISP decided it would be great to give it it at 11pm at night mid movie.

Tried specifying port and subnet but discovered it was a PPPOE setup. My google home router was not playing nice so out of frustration I unboxed the ISP supplied router to keep the movie going and got it verified. Not going back I can't seem to use my Google wifi PPPOE settings.

Does the ISP log the MAC address of the router and only allow connections to that router once verified?

    TL;DR

Do I need to ask my ISP to clear my MAC address on their port to be able to setup a different router under my new static IP?

Speed when extending WiFi with two routers via Ethernet

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:21 PM PDT

I have a router on my main floor and several devices upstairs get poor signal. I have wired my Ethernet from the main floor router to the upstairs and plan to buy a second router to boost the signal upstairs.

My question. What happens exactly if the routers have different speeds (lets say 1000mb vs 300mb as an example)?

    A) Will the 1000mb router slow down to the 300mb speed?
    B) Will I get 300mb when my device grabs the slow routers signal but then 1000mb if I get close and it switches to the fast router?

Routers will have the same SSID*

I'm pretty sure the answer is A) but I wanted to check before buying a second router. Upstairs I just need stronger signal for my handheld devices but I don't need the speed so I was thinking of getting a cheaper (slower) router. However if this slows down my entire WiFi network then I'll need to get another fast router instead.

    Linksys Velop Troubleshooting

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:39 AM PDT

Greetings network gurus! Two years ago I set up a Linksys Velop mesh network in my new house and I confess I wish I'd gone with Ubiquiti now that I know better. The diagnostics on Velop are very limited. The main issue is that it's a large floor plan and my thinking at the time was to "brute force" the problem with a lot of nodes. More later, but the trouble I'm having is dead spots in terms of connectivity.

    I have six nodes.

The layout can be seen here:

    • The "base node" is in the basement in a corner (green in the diagrams)
    • I have CAT6 connecting the base node to the two nodes in orange (long runs)
    • The nodes in blue are connected over wifi
    • The house is 66' long, 52' wide and 42' tall with wooden frame construction
    • I have FIOS with 1GBpS service and use their router

I noticed some odd pairings. For example:

    • #2 is connected to #3
    • #3 is connected to #6
    • #4 is connected to #5
    • And, of course, #5 and #6 are connected to #1

I am unexpectedly getting low / no connectivity in the master bedroom (near node #5). I can get 75-200MBpS on the wireless nodes and sometimes 500-850MBpS on the wired ones. The master bedroom will sometimes show low or nothing in terms of connectivity.

I'm kind of at a loss. Perhaps it's the odd mesh connecting? I was hoping the wireless nodes would connect to their nearest wired ones but that doesn't seem to be happening. Is there a way to force this? I'd hate to pitch out this whole system and have to reinvest in Ubuqiti, but that seems more and more likely...

Benefits of a separate router and access point vs a combo unit for a small apartment?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:08 PM PDT

Doing the wireless set up for my studio apartment right now (~400 sq feet). I've got 100mbs through WOW, a Motorola MB7420 modem, and I'm looking for a router.

I've narrowed it down to two options:

    1. A TP-Link AC1750 ($58)

    2. Ubiquiti Edgerouter X and a single Unifi AP AC Lite ($140)

I see the latter combo recommended all the time, but mostly because it's extensible to more access points for better coverage. I don't really care about that though, as I'm probably going to be living in <1000 sq ft apartments for at least the next few years. Is there any other reason to go separate?

FWIW I kinda want to get the Ubiquiti stuff for the coolness + tinkering factor, but $80 is a lot of money for a college student and I'm not sure how much it's worth to me

    Activating Home Ethernet

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:02 PM PDT

I moved to a house recently that was built in 2006 and appears to be wired for ethernet throughout the house. I'm not sure if this was only supposed to be telephone only, but given the year I assume it works for internet too. Conveniently, practically every room in the house is wired. Because I didn't have time during the move to set this up properly, I just set up a Wifi network using Google mesh routers and figured I'd do the ethernet later. The WiFi has proven quite slow however, especially in my home office where I need the wired internet most, partly because its WiFi and partly because of walls/distance throughout the house. I have my own Netgear 4-port router from a previous apartment, and a Comcast-provided Surfboard DOCSYS 3.0 modem.

What I'd Like to Do: Ideally, I would put the cable modem and router in my downstairs office, have the router distribute internet through the wall, and have my desktop and X Box directly connected via ethernet (both are downstairs). I'd like to use the Google wifi's if I can (to avoid spending any more money), and use one downstairs, one on the middle floor, and one on the top floor.

So: Below are pictures of the panel downstairs. The wiring mostly has labels -- the blue wire in the "IN" port says "Kitchen" on it, some others have labels, but not all. Any help on figuring out what I should do as a first step would be helpful...right now I'm just doing random things and none are working.

Best Mesh System in 2019 for Gigabit internet?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 05:02 PM PDT

What's the best wifi mesh network for gigabit internet?

I've done speedtests via ethernet to my desktop and I get just over 1000mbps. I also get around 700mbps on my iphone when I'm next to the router, but I think that's the iphone itself throttling the speeds and not the router.

However, I've tried a couple different mesh systems and they always reduce the speeds significantly. I've tried google's and I was getting 100mbps, with 3 nodes set up in a 2000 sq ft house.

What's the best system for maintaining gigabit speeds? I would like to have at least 600mbps in all areas of the house.

    Many thanks

Pesky home networking issue solved, but I'd like to understand what was causing it...

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:48 PM PDT

For the last six months my wireless network has been very finicky and had periods throughout the day when it wouldn't work at all. I had my Internet service provider troubleshoot from their end and I reset my wireless router back to factory defaults multiple times and tried different settings and channels, all without any success.

My setup is that I have one computer on Ethernet and several wireless devices. The one computer that's hooked in through Ethernet is a MacBook Pro with an Ethernet dongle.

What my son finally noticed, was that every time I unplugged the MacBook Pro from its dongle, the wireless would go down. If I additionally unplugged the Ethernet cable from the dongle, the wireless would come back. Or, whenever I reattached the dongle to the MacBook the wireless would come back.

So, I assume something about having the Ethernet cable plugged into the dongle, but not attached to the MacBook was causing the problem, but I'm not sure what or why.

My guess is that having the cable plugged into the dongle was enough for my wireless router to think there was a device present, and that it was sending data through the cable and expecting an acknowledgement, but never receiving one, and that maybe this got it stuck in a loop or swamped the wireless router with packets or something.

    Anyone know?

    Thanks!

    Downside of Multiple UniFi APs?

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:37 PM PDT

So I listened to the sub and ordered some UniFi Gear:

    1. USG 3P
    2. US 8 60w
    3. AC-IW (x2)

So with all the back and forth on amazon I ended up with the standard IW not Pro or HD. Somehow I got mixed up and didn't notice until they were setup and didn't give me the bandwidth I expected.

I have 1gig AT&T fiber in a home that has two ethernet cat 5 home run to basement. My Apple router wasn't cutting it so I wanted to move up. The AC-IW is giving me very similar results but I'm out $500.

So my dilemma: I need WiFi so I can't just return the APs bc I really don't want to remove them since everything is setup. Yea didn't speed test early in process. I can get the Pro or HD but it will be close to return deadlines. I'm tempted to keep the 2 in walls and put them at secondary locations and order 1 HD for the office on the main floor of a 3 story home (basement, main floor, upstairs). Will this mix cause me problems? Will the phones devices be able to jump on the fastest AP? Will it go to only the strongest? Also 60w POE... seems like 3 is pushing my limit so do I have concerns if I end up with a 4th for the game room in the basement?

So, do I introduce issues into my network by having 2 or 3 or 4 different APs with different speeds?

Can no longer see networked home camera

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 10:30 AM PDT

I have an in-home camera connected to wifi. I have AT&T fiber and use their pace 5268AC router. In my house, when connected to my network the camera is visible through the app that came with the camera (and also through any camera viewing software). The camera is set up on a static IP via the router, though not in the DMZ.

For the last year, I've been able to see the camera when I'm away from the home network (ie through the app via LTE). Within the last few weeks, something, somewhere changed, and I can no longer see the camera when out of the house.

As an aside for comparison, I can still see the cameras for my security system (which this particular camera is not part of) through the security system's app.

I've changed nothing on my own, the camera app didn't get updated, as far as I know the router was not updated.

A couple of questions. First, I'm not even sure how I was able to view the camera for a year in the first place when outside the network....it just worked. How does that work? Secondly, any idea what may have changed or what I can do to fix it?

    Thanks

Looking to upgrade my r7000 with a $200 budget

    Posted: 11 Aug 2019 04:24 PM PDT

Also i cant stream 4k media on plex because it buffers all the time (could be because i have Wifi N card which am also looking to upgrade but need to decide on which router first so I know whether to get an ax card or ac card). Any suggestions?
