What do you use your SD card for?

I've a Note9 and keep looking at SD cards but can't find a compelling reason to get one. What am I missing? Cheers

Oneplus 7 pro review after 3 months: Near perfect hardware, oxygen OS is really starting to annoy me with its limitations.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:49 PM PDT

Been a while since i've posted here. Note 9 kind of was the ultimate phone for a while for me... I guess until the oneplus 7 pro's 90hz 1440p oled screen did compel me to give it a shot... and overall I think its probably one of the best phones available in the US at msrp and worthwhile for most ppl, yet coming to this from a samsung phone feels oddly lacking... which would be the reverse a few years back. How has times changed!

So let's first talk about the good bits here. Oneplus did finally address a bunch of annoyances I've (and many reviewers) had over the years which is great.

    • overall build is great. Really dig the blue finish. The phone is pretty slippery though, and its a curved screen so the corners do dig in the fingers. Definitely a case phone.

    • Not a huge fan of curved screens, especially with the hunt for screen protectors (loca based ones are the only half decent ones, which are a pain to install, and have weird imperfections after a bit), but this is ok, feels more curvy than recent samsung phones, but the reflections aren't too distracting. the corners are super rounded though... can mess with the corner elements of some apps. Companies need to stop doing this. Also minimum chin and no notch nonsense makes this one sexy piece of tech. Many apps still behave weird with notches and holes... so its best not to have any of that nonsense.

    • The display is pretty dope. sharp and vivid as amoled should be. 90hz is generally dope where applicable, although ive realized a lot of apps, this phone does seem to just force to 60 hz. I've played with the adb command... and honestly it makes less of a difference than I'd thought, so I ended up turning it off to save a bit of battery. I'm hearing the Q beta fixed some of the stutters of twitter and a few other apps that scroll, so that's good. Pretty solid first attempt for oneplus. I do recall razer mentioned getting higher refresh rate working well on android was tricky.

    • Stereo speakers. Yay! Finally. Not the very best, but perfectly fine for watching some youtube.

    • top tier haptics motor! up there with LG and pixel as the best on android. noticeably better than my note 9. I keep vibrate on tap for keyboards on for this phone.

    • proper telephoto lens again!

    • the freebie case and screen protectors... are honestly pretty dope. Oneplus is still one of the rare companies in the US that offers this in the box. case has good grip and extended lips so the screen doesn't touch the table face down. the plastic screen protector has olephobic coating so its smooth to touch.

    • Charging options is dope. Warp charge is... a bit better than dash... but not really worth the much larger brick tbh, like you save a few min's max. But it supporting dash charging is great, because i have a few of those around. Also supporting 15w USB-PD is great, especially for power packs. Got a few PD ones and they can top up my phone fairly quickly when i'm out hiking away from outlets. Good stuff!

    • Was gifted a warp charger for the car... and man is this great. Don't need to plug in to charge at night anymore, can just quickly top off on my commute. Charges pretty dang quick too with google maps running, which i've never really seen on any other phone and charging setup.

    • popup selfie... is fine? Honestly I just don't do selfies much... which means this will probably never break on me lol. It's a fun thing to show coworkers though.

    • battery life is surprisingly good. Guess the phone mostly being in 60hz seems to help. Way better idle then any samsung i've used at the very least. Never really had delayed notifications that some oneplus users have had either.

    • in screen fp sensor is great. pretty much always works unless the finger is wet. Not an issue.

So yeah, the best oneplus yet by a fair margin, which imo is worth the not tiny price hike from last year. But now for my annoyances.

    • Lack of microsd card is still an annoyance, especially when i have a 400gb microsd card I bought during prime sale... at least they finally added usb 3.0, so file transfers isn't super slow.
    • I'm not really a camera person... so it might just be my lack of skills... but i've found this camera to really struggle with food pics. Never really had this issue with other phones, in terms of blurry bits. Maybe its just me though.
    • oxygen os... it's something i've loved over the years for its speedy performance... but these days I just wish it was more in a similar way I wish stock android was 'more'. op7 pro is basically one of the largest flagship phones out there... yet it offers a 1 hand mode, and doesn't really take advantage of its size that well in terms of multiwindow functionality.
    • for example, when I'm typing in a window at the bottom while splitscreen video at the top, it still pushes the video off screen. Samsung fixed this years ago.
    • also for a phone with 12 gb of ram, I don't really feel like I can use it? Games I play still reload every once in a while, similar to my 8gb ram note 9. But my samsung it offered me a plethora of ways to run multiple apps at the same time, and a pretty robust Dex mode as well.

    • Just feel like the tides have turned. In the past you want a lean rom so the phone isn't a laggy bloated mess after a few weeks, like samsung a few years ago... but now that samsung phones run generally fine, yet offer a butt load of features that can use all that hardware... I'm feeling the same annoyance I have with iphones as with oneplus. You get all this crazy spec sheet... but what can I do with all this?

    • oh yeah, pie recent apps switcher is ass, especially on oxygen os, in which its missing the suggested app icons on the bottom, the select text from thumbnails... and also for some dumb reason, the app switcher doesn't support landscape mode, similar with the launcher, so if you are switching apps from a full screen video, or landscape game, you see a lot of rotating nonsense. Needlessly disorienting.

    • what the heck does gaming modes even do on phones (besides making you an asshole with auto hanging up incoming calls)? Or ram boost? Or any of these placebo 'features'? This is the bloat that no one wants, unless someone can prove to me this stuff offers tangible benefits, then i'll eat crow!

    • ambient sensor is still too damn aggressive. Like autobrightness still goes way too dark. been an issue since my op3. They say its fixed every update, but nope.

    • wireless charging... would be nice, mostly because i have pads everywhere haha. They are mostly just used for my galaxy buds now :(

So yeah... think most people would be fine with this phone if you aren't interested in crazy multiwindow shenanigans (which according to google with pie, its most ppl). Probably the smoothest phone on the market atm without GAMER branding. Also the only popup selfie camera phone in the US atm, so thats a neat party trick.

I'd definitely say this is a 'buy', but with the price cuts on the s10 family... its a tougher sell in terms of features vs features. Also don't buy the 12gb ram variant. Pretty sure I wasted $50 for that.

Curious if I jump to the note 10...
