    Simple Questions - July 03, 2019

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Super fast boot can be dangerous for noobs(GIGABYTE motherboards)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 06:33 AM PDT

A few weeks ago I built a brand new computer. As someone used to lower end SSDs, I was excited about the fabled boot times, so I decided to enable super fast boot. Didn't notice anything special about the new boot time, but I left it enabled in the BIOS. Sooner or later, I was messing around with my partitions and accidentally wiped my OS.

That's where the trouble began. For a long while I was certain my disk had disconnected or even worse, died, or that I was experiencing motherboard issues. Super fast boot does not look for BIOS keyboard presses, so I could not enter BIOS. At first I thought I just needed a PS/2, but after looking for the 15 year old converting port for hours, I realized PS/2 keypresses are not being recognized either. It also does not look for bootable OS-es plugged in as USBs. Basically I was stuck without an OS. Some googling, and a VERY lucky video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYKU3XbIhZI

After all the "turn it on and off again, but QUICKLY" tricks didn't work, I had to go and do the deed myself. I dug through the motherboard's circuit sheet and found the general area of where the thing should be. I nervously opened up the case, stuck my screw driver in it, just like the guy in the video said. I plug it all back in, and it works. I felt the weight of a mountain roll off my chest. Rescued my data, too.

In case anyone else that's as inexperienced as me wants to enable fast boot, but isn't sure, I'd suggest you just leave the defaults on.

Final PC Build, 3600x and 2070 Super. Thoughts appreciated

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 09:38 AM PDT

Hey all, I've been wanting to build a PC for the past few weeks but I figured I would wait till the new releases of CPUs and GPUs before I did it.

Originally I was going to go with the 2600x but figured I might as well upgrade to the 3600x and was going to go with RTX 2060 but decided to upgrade to the 2070 super as I feel it will have more longevity.

Below is my final build, I can't add on the 2070 Super yet as it's not in the PCpartpicker database yet. Any final thoughts?

How hard/soft have AMD launches been recently? Will Zen2 be in retail immediately?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 08:23 AM PDT

Hey folks, I haven't bought a CPU on launch day since my i5-2500k and I am not super up to speed on how things have worked with recent AMD launches. I know AMD is announced a 7/7 launch for Zen 2. Is that like a soft paper launch like some tech companies do, where it will be available in very limited quantities or with several week lead times? Or is it a real deal, walk into Microcenter on Sunday and walk out with a Zen2 CPU and a X570 mobo?

I'm not sure if I need to order something online ASAP or get to the store the minute it opens, or if I can just kinda pick something up whenever.

PC under performing after shutting down during a storm. Help please!

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 03:58 PM PDT

So there was a storm passing through about half an hour ago and while I was on my PC all the lights and electronics in my house went out for a second, including my PC. It shut down then started back up again just as quick. It seems fine physically but then I noticed my performance in games has dropped drastically. In Rage 2 I normally get 80-90 fps. No I'm at 25-30 (I even turned graphics to low). For Honor went from 140-165 to 90. Checked my userbench score and it went from this to this. What do I do?

    This is my PC:

    Looking for 4K monitor suggestions

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 02:46 PM PDT

The primary uses would be browning reddit, media consumption, and light productivity. I would like at least 60hz (I already have a 1080p monitor for gaming).

My budget is $250-350. Ideal size is 27-32"

I would really appreciate some suggestions because Amazon is so saturated with monitors and it's difficult to know what's good. Thank you all!

Computer desk for full tower with storage?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 12:46 PM PDT

I'm looking to replace my computer desk. I recently built a new PC, and the tower is too tall to fit in the tower space of my current computer desk. I'd like a computer desk with room for a full tower, and ideally also a printer and maybe a scanner too, and perhaps room to fit a smaller form-factor PC. And some storage space would be good too, perhaps as a hutch on the desk, for things like USB drives, optical discs, etc.. An L-shaped desk would work well for me, but I'm open to other ideas too. Would anyone have a recommendation?

    Best Low Profile Keyboards

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:24 AM PDT

    Reddit,

Why must it be so hard to find low profile keyboards? at the moment I'm using the cheap Microsoft wired 600 keyboard, it's profile when completely flat is perfect for what I like (keys themselves not so much). Every time I try and look for a new keyboard its some mechanical high key profile out of the 80's looking thing, and if I do try and look for a low profile keyboard, the options look like the manufacturers took their indicators from the lowest of the low profile laptop keyboards like the keyboards that come with Microsofts Surface tablet.

Are there any good low profile mechanical keyboards? are you like me and prefer low profile keyboards and know of any you'd happily recommend? (mechanical or otherwise). Please reply and post your recommendations! either I'm not looking hard enough or what I'm looking for has a narrow popularity so they come few and far between, which is weird seeing as a $20 keyboards profile is near perfect for my liking. Thank you in advance.

    SSD HD Allocation Failure

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 04:21 PM PDT

Hey, so I installed a new SSD and didn't allocate enough space (26GB) for the OS partition. Is there anyway I can extend that space? I have plenty on the 1TB SSD. I really don't want to format and re-allocate the space. My google-fu hasn't been working and you guys always come through. What do I do?

edit* Title should read SSD OS Allocation Failure. My bad. If anybody knows an easy way to feed more space to the OS partition without having to format that would be amazing.

Build won't display, tried everything. (HELP)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 04:04 PM PDT

About a month ago my custom build unexpectedly shut down, and further on, would shutdown at startup. I decided to clean the insides and replace thermal paste. After doing so, I reassembled everything back.

As I am a complete novice, I did some mistakes.

    1) I forgot where which SATA (Optical Drive and Hard Drive) cable went into which SATA plug.
    2) I forgot to map where each cable went (although I am pretty sure each went to the right place)
    3) After reassembling, I turned it on only to around 3 tries later discover I hadn't plugged the ATX 12V 4-pin to the motherboard.
    4) I didn't wear an anti-static wrist band.

The issue is: my PC starts but won't display anything- every fan runs, I can hear the HDD spin, and the lights go on. I tried reseating everything and nothing. I know it's not my monitor or HDMI cables because they work with other devices. It's also not my GPU as I switched it for another and the issue still persists. I am stuck, and have been unable to solve the issue for a month.

There are some things I do note, that may be insightful:
    1. The LAN plug used to light up when a cable was plugged, now it doesn't.
    2. The PC won't shut down by pressing the power button, only when I turn off the PSU.

I would be incredibly grateful if someone could point me out to the right direction. Thanks in advance!

Where will one buy a RTX Super series in Canada?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 09:59 AM PDT

Hi there. Fellow Canadian here! With all of the RTX Super craze, I was wondering where one would get a RTX Super card when it releases.

I believe the release is July 9th. Will the only available vendor for the Super cards be NVIDIA worldwide? Just wondering, because I see nothing for Canada, let alone any other area except US.

    Thanks!

Your thoughts on Ry5 3600 / GTX1660Ti Gaming & Photo Editing PC Build

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 05:46 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie with little computer knowledge so please go easy on me as I ask for your help and expertise in highlighting any issues or recommendations to my chosen parts list for my first ever PC build.

I now have a basic spec of what I believe will work although i do need to check fine details like connectors etc. I have selected them all through PC Part Picker so there shouldn't be any compatibility issues. I have just about reached my limit of what i would like to spend on this but I can be somewhat flexible.

I am building this mostly for gaming (GTA V & Squad and some simulation games) however I am also into photography and so will be running Photoshop & Lightroom too.

    [PCPartPicker Part List](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Fhdz29)

Despite what PC Part Picker says, i believe this will come with a Cooler.

    **Motherboard** | [MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/Hy97YJ/msi-b450-tomahawk-atx-am4-motherboard-b450-tomahawk) | £89.99 @ Amazon UK . I realise i will need to ensure BIOS is updated for ZEN 2.

I believe this should be good enough for VRAM heavy games like Squad an GTAV

    **Case** | [RIOTORO - CR500 ATX Mid Tower Case](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/Jv8H99/riotoro-cr500-atx-mid-tower-case-cr500) | £57.93 @ Amazon UK

Total usage looks to be around 290W so I have chosen a 550W.

    **Operating System** | [Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/wtgPxr/microsoft-os-kw900140) |-

How do I mount my GPU?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 06:43 AM PDT

I'm using a Radeon sapphire in my Rosewill SCM-01 micro case. The GPU is sagging because there is seemingly no way to mount the GPU. The holes on the expansion slot cannot fit the screws included with the case. Moreover, it seems like even if I could screw something into it, the sagging would not be affected. The manual is unhelpful. Thanks in advance.

I'm stumped. Motherboard has power, no boot

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 03:13 AM PDT

    Images:https://imgur.com/a/58GGI56

I just transferred this from one case to another and now it won't boot. EVGA Z68 SLI is the motherboard. With a 500W PSU.

    Changes? New case, new SSD.

As you can see the motherboard had power as the standby light is on and a light is on, on the GPU.

I've tried turning it on from the board directly with nothing happening, and from the top switch on the new case.

The issue may be the fan hub as I've never dealt with one of those before? It worked all ok until the change of case.

Pulling my hair out here - help

Edit: there is a little screen which shows a post code if there's an error normally. It won't boot therefore this is blank. Reset CMOS with no results. Ethernet light is green when power is connected too. Doesn't seem to be a motherboard or PSU Issue. Removed the CPU and placed it back in. No results. Tried another compatible CPU, no results.

Edit 2: followed this: https://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=394 Fan spins up. Not a PSU issue

    SSD recovery help me pls

Can I connect this SSD (860 evo) using a SATA data and power cable to my new PC, even with the OS installed, and recover the files, and then disconnect?

What is going on with my HDD? What to do next time?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2019 03:14 PM PDT

Apologies for the long post: have no clue what happened exactly and could use a feedback

I recently completed a new build, I decided to savage an old 2TB HDD that I used for games/media file from the old one.

I noticed that while I was using a game on that HDD the system slowed down and was unusable.

After rebooting on Windows I receive a message that "Scanning and repairing drive" is taking place. I wait a bit but the progress is stuck at 1%.

I turn off the PC as it was stuck at 1% (possibly dumb idea) and boot back into a live linux distro.

As it was not closed by windows properly I can mount it as only read, I take advantage of it and copy my most important files onto a backup drive just to be safe (good idea in hindsight). While copying I notice that some files seems to be not accessible and the hard disk is making small beeping noises.

After copying most file I boot back windows (running on another SSD) with the disk unplugged. I plug it after boot and I'm able to see the drive and access most files but I get random errors on some directories, it suggest me to boot everything back to fix it.

I connect and reboot again to be greeted with the "Scanning and repairing", it goes slowly up until 67% where the drive start making that beeping noise for a while and then goes back to 1%. After waiting hours I force reboot it and now the hard drive isn't showing up at all neither through Windows nor Linux, If I specifically look for connected drive I get a 4GB one instead of the actual 2TB size.

A couple of questions that I know would like to answer:

Is the drive content still recoverable through some fancy software?

Even accepting to format it back, will I be able to get back the 2TB? Should I even trust this drive anymore or am I looking at a physical issue which would make it better to avoid putting new data onto it?

Should something similar happen again what is my best course of actions?
