List of the best available laptops for gaming and for college.

List of the best available laptops for gaming and for college.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 11:47 AM PDT

This list will mainly be for USA market, I have another list for Canada here

Best college laptops in Canada in 2018 (in the range between 500~1500)

Best Gaming Laptops in Canada in 2018 (in the range between 500~2000)

And I am planning to do one for the UK as well, soon for other countries, the price and availability is so different that it is much harder to build so instead maybe you can take advantage of this MyUS wesbite promo of free trial membership to ship laptops from USA to anywhere else).

Other useful posts that you should check out

Some terms that we will use on this list:

NVMe: is just like an SSD only faster, minimal difference unless you are a profissional in certain work fields, and if you are you would know if you need one.

Thunderbolt 3 : is a port, it has a lot of usage, some use it for eGPU (external GPU where you connect a more powerful GPU to your laptop for better gaming experience), some use it for external screens, some use it to charge (feature not available in all TB3 ports), some use it to copy/paste data as it is much faster than a standard USB 3.0.

MX150: is a GPU, It is good enough to low to med range gaming, if you go to higher end games you will have to lower the settings to get playable FPs.

FPs: is short for frames per seconds, it is a way to determine how smooth the gameplay will be, most gamers aim for FPS around 60, or higher if you are playing FPS (First Person Shooter), on a higher refresh screen.

Most laptop screens are 60Hz, but higher end gaming laptops come with 120Hz, and some come with 144Hz screens.

This list is updated on July 2019

    ********** Gaming laptops ***************

    300~400 range Acer Aspire E 15

    • Intel HD Graphics 620 is the best iGPU you can find for this budget which makes the laptop the best option for light gaming on a very tight budget.

    • Full HD (TN) 15.6 screen, which is very rare for this budget range and great for watching movies/videos.

    • Comes with 8th gen i3, and 6GB ram.

    • Good upgrades available, can go to 16 GB of ram, and with a little more work than usual you can even fit a SSD on it.

    • USB type C which is another rare thing to find on this budget.

I thought I would give you a little more in depth review, so here it goes.

    • Battery life is from 7 to 10 hours of normal non gaming usage.
    • Backlit keyboard only comes on when you touch the buttons to save battery, it is quite.
    • Easily upgradeable, we recommend you add 4GB stick and a SSD if you have the budget for it and it would turn into a perfect laptop (more so than it already was).
    • Minimal bloat-ware, speakers are above average like what you would expect from a laptop, Trackpad doesn't have separate buttons, but they work well, the outer body has a matte finish to it which makes it feel really good even though it is all plastic and doesn't attract fingerprints easily).

550~650 The Acer Aspire E 15 Not the same model.

    • NVIDIA MX150 which is one of the best for this range but still not great for newer games Benchmark(use the same website to check the benchmarks of the other GPU from the right hand list).

    • 8th Gen i5 quad core CPU, Full HD IPS 15.6 inch screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, MX 150 GPU (a nice step up from the iGPU 620 on the other acer ).

    • Long battery life (advertised of up to 15-hours of battery life), weight 5.27 lbs, backlit keyboard, USB type C.

    • 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD both are somewhat standards in 600 range so finding them on 500~ range is somewhat a catch.

Here is a little in depth review of it :

    • Same with the cheaper Acer, it is made from plastic, but it feels sturdy, screen comes with anti glare finish so it will work well outside.

    • Battery life is great about 5-8 hours of general usage.

    • Backlit keyboard, quite and comfortable, Trackpad have been getting some mixed reviews, I think it is a software issue, or maybe it is because some people are not used to trackpads.

    • Speakers are good, above average for laptops in this range, the gaming performance is also above average since it is only MX150 but it the best for the budget.

    • Very thin, very quiet (can barely hear the fans), It has room for more ram as well as more SSD, Fingerprint magnet.

    700~800 The Nitro 5

    • It comes with Intel Core i5-8300H, GTX 1050Ti with 4GB GDDR5, 8GB of ram, 256GB SSD.

    • Very good build quality, average battery life (3.5-5 hours of light to moderate usage), Backlit keyboard, USB type C, Full HD IPS.

Here is a more detailed review of it:

    • The display cover has a brushed-metal look to it and you can open it with one hand.

    • Ram is easily upgradeable, SSD is also upgradable but it needs a little more work.

    • Keyboard is backlit chiclet keyboard (only red) and it can be turned on and off, with good travel and precision.

    • Touchpad supports multi-touch gestures and it is big enough to use them, with clear pressure point.

    • Screen is not super bright, so it might struggle in direct sunlight, and color coverage is also not great but slightly above average at 40% RGB and 62% sRGB.

    • Screen doesn't have Screen flickering / PWM and it has IPS panel so the viewing angles are great, but response time is not great too.

    • CPU throttle a little and gets hot (to the point that it is painful to use on your lap), but for general usage and most games it shouldn't have a big negative impact.

    • GPU is powerful enough to run most games on Medium to high settings, you can view the expected FPs from this link

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Ti-Notebook.168400.0.html

    • Fan noise is very low during idle or light usage, but rather loud during gaming, but that is to be expected.

    • Battery life during non gaming usage is very good for a gaming laptop at around 5.5-6.5 hours.
The 2019 version of it should be coming out soon, it is supposed to be available already but I couldn't find a place that sells it yet

    750~850 Dell Inspiron 15

    • 7th gen i5 quad core CPU (older gen but still very powerful), 1050Ti GPU, 15.6 Full HD IPS screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.
    • backlit keyboard, no USB type C, on the heavy side for this size.

here is a little detailed review of it:

    • Screen hinge in the enter, which makes the display very stable and you can open the display with one hand without any problems.

    • Comes with 3 USB and 1 USB type C that supports Thunderbolt.

    • Easily upgradeable since you only need to remove a single screw to access the back of the laptop to replace/upgrade ram and storage.

    • Comes with chiclet keyboard with average sized keys and the typing noises is not audible (except for the space key).

    • Display is the main con of the unit, it is not super bright (to the point of issues in direct sunshine).

    • Screen has low sRGB and RGB coverage (57% sRGB and 36% AdobeRGB) and low constractions.

    • Screen doesn't come with PWM or Screen flickering (it is a good thing because screens that have it put strain on your eyes).

    • Screen is IPS so it has good viewing angles, but also has slow response rate when compared to TN panels.

    • Fan noise is another small con, while the sound is low under light usage, it does get loud while gaming but not to the point of it being annoyingly loud.

    • Heat management on it is very good, and its main selling point along with value for money, CPU/GPU don't throttle(much it is still within acceptable level) and don't get hot to the point of internal damage (however, it does hot enough to be uncomfortable on your lap).

    • Model with 1060 Max Q

    • You can check the below link to see how the 1060 Max Q GPU perform on the games you are planning to play (scroll down for the FPs and settings expected or ctrl+f then type the name of your game).

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1060-Max-Q-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.224734.0.html

900~1100 The Eluktronics N850HK1 only available in refurbished.

    • Comes with i7-7700HQ quad core CPU, GTX 1060 with 6GB of VRAM, 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD(or a slightly bigger 256GB SSD which is what I would go with), 8 GB ram.

    • High quality Full HD IPS screen, USB type C, backlit keyboard, high quality build, weighs 5.6 lbs great choice if you don't mind installing hard drives on your own, or if you are looking to professional looking laptop.

    • Another configuration for around 1250 will get you 8th gen hexa core CPU, 16GB ram, and 144Hz refresh rate screen, which is a worthy upgrade if you have the budget for it.

1000~1100 The Acer Predator Helios 300 2018 version

    • Comes with 15.6" FHD IPS screen w/ 144Hz Refresh Rate, Intel 6-Core i7-8750H, Overclockable GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD.

    • Reports of throttling on the CPU on this model, but other than that no major cons.

1100~1200 The Acer Predator Helios 300 2019 version

    • New version reportedly has better heat mangement and much better GPU (GTX 1660 Ti ) as well as the new i9 CPU.

    • Also great upgradeability with 2 x PCIe M.2 Slots with 1 slot open for easy upgrades and 1 available hard drive bay.

    • Personal favorite with great value for money.

    1400~1600 Eluktronics mech g2

    • 15.6" Full HD IPS w/ 144Hz Refresh Rate Display, Intel 6-Core i7-8750H, GeForce GTX 1060 Graphics, 16GB RAM, 480GB NVMe SSD, Mechanical RGB Keyboard.

Here is a small review of it:

    • Keyboard is mechanical with RGB backlit and it has number pad.

    • Lid can't be open with one hand.

    • Fans get loud under intensive work, but that is normal with every good gaming laptop.

    • Plenty of upgrade options as the chassis supports up to 32GB of ram, and 2 SSDs and 1 HDD.

    • Heat management is great, it can get hot but it gets cool again pretty quickly once the fans kick in.

    • Main con of the laptop is the trackpad, it is mediocre at best when you compare it to other laptops in the price range.

    • Battery life during normal usage is around 3.5-4.5 hours and 1.5 hour during gaming.

    • Speakers are down facing so during gaming it is best to wear headphone since the fan gets loud during gaming as well.

    1400~1600 The PROSTAR Clevo P955ER

    • Full HD 120Hz 3ms 94% NTSC screen, Intel Core i7-8750H 16GB DDR4, GTX 1070 Max-Q, 250GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 1-Year Warranty.

    • Comes with RTX 2060 6G, 120Hz 3ms, Intel i5-8300H (6 cores), 16GB, 256GB NVMe SSD, Customizable Red Backlit KB.

    • (also available with i7 and 17.3 inch screens for more).

    • Weights 4.9 lbs, has 1 USB type C, 3 USB type A, SD card reader and HDMI.

Here is a small review of it:

    • Build quality is a little meh, it is made of all plastic, and the lid can't be open with one hand.

    • Screen is TN panel, so viewing angels is low, and the brightness is low, however, color reproduction is great at 94%NTSC color Anti-Glare, and 100%sRGB, and a fast refresh rate of 3ms (advertised).

    • PWM is only available when your lower the brightness to under 20% or so, which is unlikely on day to day usage, so technically the screen is PWM free.

    • Heat mangement and battery life is still unconfirmed/not tested, however, claims say that heat mangement is very good, and battery life is around 3 hours in non gaming usage.

** 1700~2000 ASUS ROG Strix Hero II

    • Comes with 15.6" 144Hz IPS Type Full HD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, Intel Core i7-8750H, 16GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe Nvme SSD, RGB Keyboard.

    • ASUS ROG Strix Scar II Comes with similar specs/price/build expect it comes with 2070 with more supply.

    • Both come with 1 USB type C, 3 USB type A (gen 1) and 1 USB type A (gen 2), both the same weight 5.9 lbs without the power price and 6.4 with it (not official numbers but based on reviews), SD card reader and HDMI.

Here is a small review of it:

    • Both trackpad and keyboard are very decent, trackpad has 2 separate keys.

    • Screen is IPS panel, so viewing angels is pretty good, and the brightness is relatively high, color reproduction is also great at 92%sRGB, and a fast refresh rate of 3ms (advertised).

    • Screen doesn't use PWM to adjust its brightness levels.

    • Heat mangement and battery life is still unconfirmed/not tested, however, claims say that heat mangement is very good, and battery life is around 5 hours in non gaming usage.

    • 1900~2200 MSI GE75 Raider-050

    • Comes with RTX 2060 6G, 17.3 screen 144Hz 3ms, Intel i7-8750H (6 cores), 16GB, 256GB NVMe SSD+1TB, Per Key RGB keyboard. (similar configuration with 2070 cost 300 more).

    • Weights 5.8 lbs, has 1 USB type C, 2 USB type A (gen 1) and 1 USB type A (gen 2), SD card reader and HDMI.

Here is a small review of it:

    • Build quality is good, made of Aluminum Black and it attracts fingerprints.

    • Screen brightness/color coverage/viewing angles are all average, MSI claims that this is "IPS lvl" but it is still a TN panel.

    • Heat mangement and battery life is still unconfirmed/not tested, however, claims say that heat mangement is very good, and battery life is around 3 hours in non gaming usage.

    • 2000~2200 MSI GS65 Stealth

General usage and college usage laptops

FYI: the upcoming laptops are refurbished laptops, which allows for better value for money, and better specs which equals better performance, they are a little heavier, but the smaller screen makes them good college laptops.

    100~150 Thinkpads from eBay

    • This is a link for a filtered list of laptops, all refurbished, all with great specs for the price , mostly i5 3rd gen dual core CPU, 8GB ram, either 128GB SSD, or 250HDD or 320HDD, so check the description well before you click the buy button.

    150~200 Thinkpads again

    • Slightly more expensive Thinkpads, I assume they come in better conditions, but as always, it is best to check the description well when you are buying from eBay.

    • Link is there because availability on the cheaper options are limited.

    300~400 range Acer Aspire E 15.

    • This is suitable for both general usage and college usage, it is heavier than most college laptops, but it has very good battery life and great price point as well.

    • If you want a more detailed review I wrote it at the top of the post, this is the same laptop in the first post of the laptop.

    • Comes with 8th gen i3, and 6GB ram, the rest is the same as the older version, worth the extra cost if you can afford it.

    550~650 ASUS VivoBook F510UA

    • 8th gen quad core CPU (a great enhancement in performance vs the 7th gen), 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, Full HD 15.6 inch screen.

    • Very light for the size and price at 3.7 lbs, USB type C, No backlit keyboard, long battery life.

    • Much more powerful i3 8th gen quad core CPU (compared to 2 in 1 with this size and budget).
    • 4GB ram, 1TB HDD for storage, Full HD IPS 13.3 inch 2 in 1 (again rare for this price).
    • Lightweight at 3.75 lbs, long battery life, 2 USB 3.0 but no USB type C.

    550~650 ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA

    • 7th gen i5 dual core CPU, 6GB ram, 1TB HDD, 2 in 1 Full HD touch screen.
    • USB type C, stupports stylus/acer pen, very lightweight at 3.5 lbs.

    550~650 Lenovo 320S

    • Low quality res screen which is why the price is lower than the competition, but still got better value for money.

    • i5 dual core 7th gen CPU, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, 3.7 lbs which is lightweight for the price.

    550~650 Dell Inspiron 13 5000

    • Make sure to buy it from the "other sellers" as it is cheaper from there.

    • It comes with 8th gen i5 quad core CPU, 8GB ram (upgradeable to 32 if needed which is very rare for that size), 13.3 inch full HD IPS screen with 2 in 1 features and touchscreen, 1TB HDD.

    • The version with SSD for a little more.

    • 7th gen i5 dual core, 14 inch full HD IPS screen , 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.

    • High build quality with all metal body, long battery life, USB type C, backlit keyboard.

    • 8th gen i5 quad core (more suitable for those who will do more CPU intensive tasks like video editing, music production, CAD or Solid Work etc..) , 14 inch full HD IPS screen , 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.

    • High build quality with all metal body, long battery life, USB type C, backlit keyboard.

    • another listing**

650~750 The Acer Spin 5 with the current sale still ongoing.

    • Same specs as the Swift but smaller screen with better brightness with 2 in 1 features.

    • Better battery life, still has backlit keyboard but no USB type C.

    650~750 Acer Aspire S 13

    • Comes with 7th gen i7 dual core CPU, Full HD Multi-touch IPS 13.3 screen with 2 in 1 features, 8GB of ram, 256GB SSD, Intel HD Graphics 620 (good for light gaming).

    650~750 The ASUS ZenBook UX330UA

    • Better CPU and better iGPU so this is the way to go if you are going to do some light gaming on the side.

    • Lightest and thinest on this list, higher build quality, cool extra features.

    • USB type C, Backlit keyboard.

    750~850 Acer Swift 3 8th gen with MX150

    • 8th gen i5 quad core (more suitable for those who will do more CPU intensive tasks like video editing, music production, CAD or Solid Work etc..) , 14 inch full HD IPS screen , 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.

    • High build quality with all metal body, long battery life, USB type C, backlit keyboard.

    • It is more expensive because it comes with dedicated GPU MX150 so it is your best option if you are planning to do any gaming on the side.

    800~900 Acer Swift 5

    • More expensive because it is much lighter, and with i7 instead of i5.

    • 14 inch full HD IPS screen , 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.

The list is working progress at the moment, I just wanted to post it now for all to see as it grows and provide feedback

    India; Budget - 1170 USD

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 02:38 AM PDT

I'm a graphic/web designer, video editor, music producer and gamer. I need a laptop that would suit all the mentioned needs. My budget is Rs. 80,000 (roughly USD 1,168). A good sound system is also a must.

Total budget and country of purchase: Budget - Rs. 80k, India

I require a Windows. Don't want to buy an HP since I've had many bad experiences in the past.

Ideal screen size - 15.6 inches

Programs I'd be running - Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Muse, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Sony Vegas Pro, Mixcraft, FL Studio

My main concern is gaming since I know that most laptops in 80k budget would be able to run above mentioned softwares but I need a laptop that would also allow me to run most new games like Black Ops 4 or AC: Odyssey and similar stuff. I've not been able to play games for like a year now 'cause the laptop I have now doesn't have a suitable graphic card. A good sound system is also a must. Need suggestions asap. Thanks.

Would Acer Predator Helios 300 be a good pick?

Please help me decide which laptop to get!

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 03:54 AM PDT

I'm in the market for a new laptop atm, because my old one crapped itself last year and I've been putting off getting it repaired. It's come to the point where I've decided that it would be better to just buy a new laptop than to spend money on a new hard drive for a 2015 laptop that will be outdated soon. I'm currently looking at either an Acer Nitro 5 or a Dell Inspiron 15 but would love some advice. I mostly want it for digital art, streaming and gaming. The Acer comes in an 8gb ram model and a 16gb ram model that's about $1000 more expensive. I'm not sure whether I should spend the extra, because I'm most likely not going to be playing many 'intensive' games, because I prefer console for that. Mostly I want to be able to play stuff like Sims, Stardew Valley, Minecraft and some steam games. Is it worth spending the extra for more ram, or will I not really need it?

    Suggest Me a VERSATILE Laptop

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 02:31 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-$1500, USA (Amazon link is appreciated.)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Both.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight should be minimum and suggest me a thinner one.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-17 inches. 15.6' is preferred.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I expect to run virtual machines and gaming. I need GPU higher or equivalent to GTX 1060. (I don't know about Radeon graphics, I think Nvidia is better)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Crysis 3 should be running 50-60 fps on Ultra settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch-pad)? Touch screens are not needed, nor are finger print readers. build quality is important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. HP is preferred. I should be all in one package for me. I want performance, not some fancy build.

Best deal out there on a gaming laptop, preferably under $1000?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 04:05 AM PDT

    Hey,

Basically I only play WoW and League of Legends on PC, would like to do so while being able to Twitch stream lag-free with settings on high. Any good deals out there currently that you would suggest? I'm not partial to brand so long as it's a PC and is built to properly dispense/disperse heat for longevity of use purposes.

    Thanks!

Durable Laptop for a College Student

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 12:56 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $300-$800, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not looking for a 2 in 1. A good battery is helpful, and good specs since I intend to do some gaming on this laptop as well.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not much of an issue at all. My current laptop has a crack currently held together by masking tape, so durability is essential.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12-15 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I expect to be doing some CAD and editing, but not much of it, so it is a secondary matter.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Most of the games I play are strategy, such as Hearts of Iron IV and Civilization V, and DOTA2 at a reasonable quality. I'm not sure exactly what the best fps rates are for these games, however. A medium graphics level is good, and most of the games are still playable on a less detailed setting.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screens are not needed, nor are finger print readers. I'm mostly a mouse user, but reliability and good input are important to me.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If the computer can run Firefox well (they're my main browser), that would be a benefit.
      • Here's my current specs: i3-5020U processor, 6 gigs of RAM, 64 bit OS

    New mid-tier gaming laptop

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 03:08 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably under S$3,000, unless it really justifies the price. Singapore
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is important due to mainly being used in school
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? important, will be carrying it everyday
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming and light gaming as I have a desktop for games
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mainly games such as monster hunter worlds, payday 2, coop stuff. Preferably at medium settings at least at 60fps. 120hz or not is not too much of a concern.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality is a plus
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current consideration is the Gigabyte aero 15 oled SA, the one with 1660ti priced at S$2,799. I am asking here for some opinions or insights into what systems I might not have discovered also due to having read bad reviews on gigabyte replacement and customer service things.

A few laptop which I have considered and why I didn't choose them

    Razer 8th gen 2060 - S$3,429 - expensive
    Gigabyte aero 15 xa 9th gen 2070 (1080p 240hz)- S$3,300(buy from malaysia) - I don't feel 500sgd is worth the upgrade as I've read that 2070maxq is only about a 10%-15% upgrade to a 1660ti. Any experiences?
Alienware m15 r2 9th gen 2060 (1080p, 240hz) - S$3,500(buy from malaysia) - very expensive for what it offers but I've heard and seen good things of dell after care services
    MSI GS65 9th gen 2060 - S$3,299 - expensive and I think there is still thermal issues?
MSI GS65 9th gen 1660ti - S$3,099 - more expensive then gigabyte and i think there is thermal issues?

In case you wondering why buy from Malaysia its because Singapore don't currently offer the config.

As I haven't brought a laptop for at least 3 years and with all these maxq and stuff popping up, I would like some experienced opinion on what is worth and what is not and if my current choice would be a safe choice to go with or should i shell out the extra bucks for a much better option, or is there any other good 1660ti thin and light option I am missing.

Are Amazon Prime Day deals usually as good as Back-To-School season later in the summer?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 03:00 PM PDT

This is just a general question, so I hope the lack of a form is okay.

I'm gonna need a laptop with a decent graphics card for GIS mapping software next school year, so I plan to shop for something during the summer. Should I plan to spend my money (~$1000) on Prime Day in a couple of weeks, or is it better to wait for late July/August?

Any reasons I shouldn't buy the Huawei Matebook D 14'?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 02:11 AM PDT

I can get it for around 570€ here in EU, it has a sleek design very much to my liking, proper form factor and stunning battery life.

The only cons are the old(er) ryzen 2500, and soldered RAM (the option of upgrading to 16gb would be very welcome)

Now, there are the Honor Magicbook laptops with 3500 and 16gb ram options, but I do like this one more aesthetically and while I'm willing to wait till September, there is no telling when they upgrade the Matebook line any time soon...

Help Me Choose a Laptop Model [Dubai]

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 01:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: All prices are within the similar price range of roughly 4000 AED (~1000 USD). UAE
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specification for the money and good battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and dimensions don't really matter
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows (due to a specific art software), but might dual boot with Linux
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Clip Studio Paint, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, Lightroom, and some casual gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Anything that is interesting. Not really a hardcore gamer or a AAA watcher, but The Witcher seems very nice to experience.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and a reliable build quality is my main concern. I've never used an Optical Drive since 2010. Having more than one USB 3.0 port would be lovely.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have narrowed down my choices to these models based on what's available in the country where this will be purchased. Please help me choose which would be the best one to get (particularly in build quality and keyboard layout) considering they're nearly the same price and have similar specs. All of these have 16 GB RAM (only a few are tagged with "upgradable", but I'll assume that they all are if ever I'll need to go 32 GB in the future, although internal parts aren't as easy to shop around as in other countries so I don't really think about doing upgrades at least not now). Primary usage is for doing art (drawings, photo editing, video editing, VFX, and some light 3D modelling), but some power to welcome me to some Steam games I couldn't play before would be nice. Here's my Top 5:
      • ASUS S430FN-EK165T (3999 AED)
        • 14"
        • Intel i7 8565u 1.80 GHz
        • 2GB MX150 DDR5 Nvidia Graphics
        • 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
      • ASUS FX504GD-DM812T (3999 AED, unless the 3799 AED deal is still available)
        • 15.6"
        • Intel i7 8750H 2.20 GHz
        • 4GB GTX1050 Nvidia Graphics
        • 1TB HDD+16GB "Optane Memory"
      • LENOVO Legion Y530-81FV00NCAX (4299 AED)
        • 14"
        • Intel i7 8750H
        • 4GB GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
        • 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD
      • ACER 515-52-NH.Q3MEM.046 (4499 AED, unless the 3899 AED deal is still available)
        • 15.6
        • Intel i7-8750H 2.2 GHz
        • 4GB NVIDIA GeFORCE GTX 1050
        • 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD
      • HP Pavilion CX0009 1548102 (Original price is 4899 AED, but there was a deal for 4290 AED)
        • 15.6"
        • Intel i7-8750H 2.2 GHz
        • 4GB NVIDIA GeFORCE GTX 1050 TI
        • 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD

What are your experiences with these brands? How's their keyboards and heat build up? I myself have stayed away from HP for years due to the failures I've experienced while using HP products (albeit I don't own those so there might be other factors involved). Speaker quality isn't important by the way since I use a headphone all the time.

Thank you so much for your comments!

Universally great gaming laptop, with good cooling system

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 06:12 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

No budget limit. Country of purchase: Russia. Although I am ready to order for international shipping from anywhere around the world, if it guarantees quality and no scams

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I care less about the battery life, because I just need gaming PC in multiple places. Work forces me to travel a lot. I know I won't be playing it unplugged from charger

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I have no qualms with lugging a giant brick along with me. I'll most likely be putting it into luggage anyway

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Bare minimum screen resolution I'd need is 1920x1080. As for the size, I am indifferent about it

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Latest games, on maxed out settings

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No specific games. I got a lot on my list, but most require high end PCs

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I feel indifferent about aesthetics, although I do consider them a good bonus. One thing though, I'd like a gaming laptop with good cooling system. Majority I had are absolutely crap at doing their job sustaining games at Ultra, 60fps and most importantly, below 80 Celsius. Ready to cap framerate at 45 to sustain that temperature

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

In short, high end specs and good cooling system are the only Top requirements. Anything else, such as looks, is a welcome bonus

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifics for money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Unimportant

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

      • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing using Adobe photoshope, illustrator, and indesign
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer that the arrow keys aren't squished together ; that each of the four arrow keys are the same size and I would like an optical drive if possible. No touch screen

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I mainly want this to run the Adobe creative cloud software as well as possible for my money while still using it for other class work

Need help deciding between the MSI GS75 8SE and the ASUS GX502GV

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 09:18 PM PDT

Hi, like the title says I've narrowed it down to these two:

    MSI

    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Notebooks/Gaming-Notebooks/76502-GS75-Stealth-8SE-233AU

    ASUS

    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Notebooks/Gaming-Notebooks/76856-GX502GV-ES001T

I'm leaning towards the asus model mainly for the g-sync but I'm also really liking the screen size on the msi.

Looking for opinions on whether g-sync is worth the extra $300 and sacrificing the larger screen?

Buy a Laptop with 1060 6GB now or Wait a little?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 03:14 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

So i'm that lucky that I have a job where I can spend time to game when there is nothing to do in the nights and evenings. I'm looking for a gaming laptop to use on the go and that my girlfriend can use at home when i'm not at work and i'm using my desktop.

I really like the new Lenovo Legion y530 and I have found a shop in my country that sells this version at a great price:

    i7-8750H 2,2 GHz

    16 GB DDR4 SDRAM 2666 MHz

    512 GB SSD

    GTX 1060 6gb

Display: 15,6" LED backlight 144hz IPS Full HD.

Price: 1.361 USD / 1.205 Euro Converted from my country's currency.

So my question is: I can see that Lenovo is now selling a new version called y540 with a 1660 ti GTX

Would it be worth waiting for or is the first one I have found somewhat future proof? I'm not expecting 5 Years of gaming at max settings or anything, but should I wait a little bit or just buy to get the best out of it? The one I have found is on a sale in a local store.

Looking for a light weight laptop for Unity and Unreal Development

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 08:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Canada. Less than 1600$ cad

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs. Battery life kind of important, but not a priority.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. I'd like to move around and my 17inch was way too bulky for that. I'd like to move to 14inch but if you'd like to share your experience with a 15.6 inch laptop and moving around, I'm all ears.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Indifferent

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -fill here, remove dashes- Light gaming. Would like to smoothly run Unity and Unreal. Also other IDEs, but Unity is the most important program.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing high end comes to mind.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Hopefully a decent fan so it doesn't overheat.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm also down for suggestions out of my price range. I'm not sure about the buying power I have, so I'm down to hear your discussions. Thank you!

EDIT: Should've specified that I'm looking for Unity 3D development and, more specifically, VR!

    Razer blade model?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2019 02:41 PM PDT

Hello everyone, so I'm thinking of selling my xps 15 9560 and getting myself a gaming laptop. The Razer blade 15 has become my final decision BUT there are two models that I am still deciding between. The first is the 2060 512 gb white version which comes in at $2,200 where the second option is the 2070 MAX-Q 256 gb in black coming in at $2,250. After doing some research, I've seen in gpu comparisons that a full RTX 2060 does on average have higher fps performance in overall tests compared to the 2070 MAX-Q.

Any help, input, or anything is appreciated!
