What exactly is apt-get / pacman / yay etc etc. Posted: 24 Jul 2019 10:59 AM PDT Bare with me, I've only had linux installed for like 3 days now. I'm currently on Manjaro, and wondering what these terms are specifically. The way I understand it. when I use pacman, I am retrieving a package from the Manjaro's officially supported database. This gives a similar result to using Octopi to download the specific app. yay on the other hand, I've been using to install AUR packages. So after a few days of browsing, I'm seeing people using different tools (like yaourt and others I can't remember right now). This leads me to wonder what exactly is happening when I type something like:yay -S 'name_here' Is yay a database that is managed by different people than yaourt? Is it just a different method of retrieving the packages, like a different door leading to the same room? I'm sorry if this is really obvious, I figured I could probably get a clear simple answer here. Thanks! BONUS QUESTION: Why do I need to sudo when using pacman, but it doesnt allow me to sudo yay? How do I backup my whole Linux installation? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 10:51 AM PDT As the title says, I was wondering how I might back up my Linux installation. Is it as simple as backing up the root directory? I found a Stack Overflow post from a few years ago (regretfully, I lost the link) and the number of options for backing up data was overwhelming. Also, I'm sure some of the solutions were obsolete or deprecated. I know that I can back up my /home or /documents folder, where I store most of my personal files. In fact, I do this on a regular basis. My goal is to back up the whole distro on a 1 TB external hard drive or the cloud so if my laptop fails I can transfer the operating system to a new machine. I've customized many aspects of Linux, from extra packages and media codecs to icons, system settings, and a custom login screen. I have dual boot enabled, and I switch between Windows and Ubuntu. Not sure if this makes a difference. I don't want to back up the whole hard drive, just the partition that stores Ubuntu. I am fairly certain there is no way to back up 100% of my browsing experience. If I edit my Firefox settings, like my favorites toolbar or the width of the scrolling bar, are those settings stored as cookies locally? OK, maybe not the best example. But I'd like to back up as much of my Ubuntu experience as possible. [link] [comments] |
How to make Firefox use Ctrl + 1/2/3/4 instead of Alt + 1/2/3/4? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 11:48 AM PDT Hey guys! I'm really set on making the switch to Linux due to the fact that I recently have been taking more control of my privacy in general. Right now, I'm deciding on choosing between Manjaro and Linux Mint, and while playing around with both of these distros I noticed that unlike windows, you can't use Ctrl + 1/2 to switch to tabs 1 and 2. You have to instead use the Alt modifier key. I tried to Startpage a solution to this but I ended up not getting any real answers. Is there anyway to change this in terminal or system preferences? I really want to make the full switch to Linux but this one fact is hindering my decision. I would appreciate any help. Thanks! :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:37 PM PDT Hi everyone, This morning, I attempted to gain more RAM through updating my swapfile. I found a website with instructions on how to do so for Ubuntu, but I believe I ruined my computer's memory in doing so. Here is the syntax with the instructions I used: Turn off all swap processes: ~$ sudo swapoff -a Resize the swap: ~$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1G count=8 if = input file of = output file bs = block size count = multiplier of blocks Make the file usable as swap: ~$ sudo mkswap /swapfile Activate the swap file: ~$ sudo swapon /swapfile Check the amount of swap available: ~$ grep SwapTotal /proc/meminfo After completing the above instructions, I received an error stating that my computer cannot change its swapfile to 8GB, so I used the same instructions to create a swapfile of 4GB. I checked swap available and it totaled to 4GB, but noticed my home directory was now at 0 memory. I thought this was strange, decided to restart my computer (clearly a bad decision), and now the computer will not boot. I can manage to open the boot manager, but that's about it. Any thoughts/suggestions/advice to get my machine running again? Thanks! TL;DR my computer can't boot because it doesn't have enough memory after trying to add more RAM by (unsuccessfully) updating swapfile. [link] [comments] |
After installation, how different are different distros when it comes to ease of use? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 07:52 AM PDT Something like Arch is a lot harder to install than something like Ubuntu, but after you get everything installed with a DE and important apps and all that, how different are they when it comes to day-to-day use? The root filesystm on /dev/nvme0n1p1 requires a manual fsck Posted: 24 Jul 2019 09:50 AM PDT I'm currently running Debian unstable and apparently didn't shutown my PC all the way last night before cutting the power. When I start up, I get greeted by the prompt in the title and then dropped into a shell with the PS1 I tried a manual fsck ( I also tried fsck-ing in recovery mode, but after a reboot I get dropped into the same shell again. What can I do to resolve this? My NVME-SSD has 3 partitions. I also have another SATA SSD with Windows on it (Dualboot with GRUB, no problems so far) and a SATA HDD for shared data between Debian and Windows. [link] [comments] |
Need help with AlienFX in Ubuntu Posted: 24 Jul 2019 09:40 AM PDT Hey guys. I just shifted from Windows to Ubuntu and I'm a complete newbie to this OS. I tried installing a few AlienFX alternatives to turn off/change my keyboard backlight, but without any success. Can you please help me out? Creating a Windows USB in Linux. Posted: 24 Jul 2019 11:37 AM PDT I feel like I tried like 5 different tools now, and all of them give me different problems. Some refuse to start, saying that I should be downloading different software to burn a windows image. Others will claim that my usb stick is busy, even though it isn't. Others will start and right at the end will prompt an error. Is there no simple way for me to make a bootable usb? I figured that of all things, Linux would excel at something like this. I get that I'm probably the problem here, but I'd love some advice on which software I should use or if theres a process that's different than in Windows (like, should I be formatting the disk in a certain format first?). Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 09:15 AM PDT I'm pretty handy with Linux in general, but I haven't had to mess around with grub too much, so my knowledge in this department is pretty shallow. So my question is: Is there a set of grub options I can specify which, in essence says: When shutting down (i.e. "poweroff" is entered from CLI), set acpi=force. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:45 PM PDT My laptop has a bunch of keys that aren't recognized by GNOME. For instance in Windows, I could press a key to disable the Windows key, so that the start menu doesn't pop up when I accidentally press it while gaming. Pressing that key again enabled it again. I'd like to have this functionality in Linux too (Fedora 30, GNOME). How would I go about doing this? Bonus if it also works with an external keyboard. [link] [comments] |

Cannot install (dualboot) Manjaro Linux w/ Windows 10 due to no EFI partitions? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 12:27 PM PDT [OS: Windows 10] [SSD Drive: 250GB, 24GB Unallocated] Pure noob with Linux, but became interested with it, as long as i can dual boot with Windows 10 (Because i need it for certain applications) I follow these instructions on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-kafKduFZw&t=115s Only problem so far is that i can't install it due to the message : "No EFI system partition was found, the system will likely not be able to boot successfully and the installation may fail" But i can't create a EFI FAT32 parititon because creating the other partitions as primary has already take up then 4 primary slots. Any solutions? I have seen the other post on this thread but it has still confused me. Still want to be able to boot both WIN 10 and Manjaro Linux EDIT: Downloaded the Manjaro ISO from https://manjaro.org/download/cinnamon/ [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:48 AM PDT Hey I have a problem with my router where I get an error message when I try to connect via http to it. I've factory reset it multiple times and nothing works the only idea I have is maybe I can flash the firmware on it, but I don't own a computer or usb is there any mobile distribution that would be able to connect via other means and flash my firmware ? Is this possible ? Thanks for your time. [link] [comments] |
