Online store sounds way too good to be true scam?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:18 PM PDT

I'm thinking about buying a new laptop and I found the one I want on a site called colamco. They are selling for a lot less then retail . Which seems sketch . On top of that the specific laptop I keep trying to buy keeps going out of stock super quick . I tried to do a few google searches but all I found were a few reviews of the site and nothing else . All the reviews seem to be super high but their are no bad reviews . Which seems shady. Idk but i just want to be careful. HAs anyone Else had bad experiences with this site or know something I don't.

15.6" Two in one with LTE

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:00 PM PDT

    Hey folks,

So I've got to upgrade the computer of one of my guys in the field (construction). He's requesting at least 15.6" in size, but also wants a 2-1, and wants the data connection.

The closest I can really find is the Lenovo X1 yoga, but it's only 14". I can't find any website that lets me filter the laptops based on whether or not they offer an LTE version.

If anyone knows of something that matches, or somewhere I might be able to better look, please let me know!

Need some input on this laptop loadout (Forge 15)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 04:55 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm about to finalize my decision on getting this laptop from Singapore's Aftershock PC. Their laptops are somewhat custom, using Clevo chassis. This is the spec sheet for the Forge 15:

    -Intel® Core™ i5-9300H Processor (Quad Core 9th Gen)

    -NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 3GB (Updated 2019 Edition . 10 % faster than 1050 4GB)

-15.6" FHD IPS Matte Display (1920x1080)

    -8GB (8GB x 1) DDR4 2666MHZ

    -Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut

-30 Day 0 Dead Pixel Policy

-RGB tactile hybrid silent keyboard with 15 Color Options (Single Zone)

    -512GB M.2 NVME ULTRA FAST SSD (Read Speed: 3200mb/s | Write speed : 2000mb/s)

    -Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 9462

    My questions/issues:

I'm considering options to upgrade the CPU and GPU to Intel Core i7-9750H and NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1650 4GB respectively as offered by them. I could opt to upgrade the CPU alone but if I want to upgrade the GPU it would require me to upgrade the CPU as mentioned.

I've heard of some overheating issues plaguing this Core i7 chip in particular in budget gaming laptops with less optimal cooling systems. Is this true?

I can't seem to find reviews regarding the new GTX 1050 (2019) so I'm wondering how well will it perform, and how much better will the GTX 1650 be compared to the 1050. Same goes for the i7 vs i5 (taking the overheating issues into consideration).

Also, with the upgraded specs, I'm wondering whether will it benefit me as a user in terms of future proofing and the lifespan of the laptop itself. I'll be using this laptop to explore more gaming titles (I currently have a PS4), with a lil bit of music production and casual use.

Your comments and feedback would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

    Acer Swift 3 (I7 8th gen) vs. Lenovo S340 (Ryzen 5 3500u)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 01:30 PM PDT

    Why the Acer?

    - Build quality (Aluminum)

    - Better CPU (Slightly)

    Why the Lenovo?

    - Cheaper.

    - AMD Vega 8 is slightly better than Intel UHD 620.

Prices are, right now, 529$ for the Acer and $521 (including taxes) for the Lenovo. Both of them have 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, weight is almost the same too.

I'll use it mostly for Multimedia, so my first priorities are the Display quality and smooth performance.

    Ideas for college laptop?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 08:33 AM PDT

I'm heading off to college as an English/Secondary Education double major and have NO idea what kind of laptop to get. I know I'm going to be writing a LOT of papers and would really like a computer that would last the whole 4 years, does anyone have any ideas that won't break the bank? Hopefully something in the $400-$800/$850 price range? If it's good I'd be willing to go for a higher price but that's my definite starting point. TIA for any help!!

Thinkpad X1 Carbon vs Dell XPS 13 (HiDPI, Linux)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:35 AM PDT

    Hi,

I need to replace my 2013 13" Retina Macbook. Don't wont to go the Mac way anymore and want to switch to Linux (arch, most likely gnome). I'm deciding between the X1 and XPS 13. I prefer the X1s keyboard, 14" screen, ports (especially USB A ports). However I do want to go the HiDPI route. This is where I'm undecided, because the X1 has a WQHD Display @ 2.560 x 1.440. Gnome scaling does as far as I understand 100, 200 & 300%. That'll mean I'll end up with a 1280 x 720 resolution @ 200% scaling. The XPS 13 having a 3840 x 210 display would result in an 1420x1080 resolution at 200% scaling. That's a big issue I have with the X1. Maybe some of you are using linux on the X1 with the WQHD screen and can report on how well the HiDPI mode works with it. Thanks a lot for your help!

    Battery Life Preservation

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 11:46 AM PDT

If you have your laptop on your desk and are using it for hours, is it fine to have it plugged in at 100%? From what I've read online, it's not ideal to do this because of the extra heat, which reduces battery life over time. At the same time, if you don't, your battery life drops. Then, when you need it on the go, you won't have enough to last the day.

So when do you guys start charging your laptops? When it's almost about to die? At 50%? Or do you just plug it in as much as you can, and if so, are you still losing battery life cycles? And do any of you have tips for overall battery life preservation? Thank you for reading.

    Please help. Laptop buzzing noise

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 11:24 AM PDT

I bought the Aspire 5 (A517-51G-52RE) and I love it. Except for one thing. After a while of being on, like a few days of being on and off on standby. The audio will start getting fuzzy and buzzing and I have to shut the laptop down completely and restart it. I've never had this problem with any of my previous laptops which have all been lower range Acers. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Looking for a light laptop with aluminium chassis and long battery life (<1000€)

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 09:07 AM PDT

I am looking for an affordable (<1000€) notebook that I can use for Office work (excel, access, powerpoint), surfing the web and netflix. It should be very light and thin and have a long battery life. In addition to that it should be made of high quality materials like aluminium.

So far I have found the following laptops:

    Huawei MateBook D

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 (128GB version is available for 950€. No USB-C bothers me though)

Does anyone of you own one of the laptops listed above? If so, what are your experiences?

Does anyone know of an alternative to those two?

    Laptop Buying Advice

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 01:56 AM PDT

Hello, I would like to ask advice about what specs a person should look for when buying a laptop for school. I will likely be using it for word processing and data tables. I will also probably be running data analysis software. When I look online, I keep seeing the LG Gram pop up and I am leaning towards buying an LG Gram 15. Would this be a good choice for my needs? I don't really game, and I just need something that I can do analysis on that won't bog down. I know very little about tech stuff, hope anyone can help. Thank you!

    Question about Laptop temp.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 07:52 AM PDT

I'm really sorry if this is a stupid question.

    I currently have a Dell G7 7588.

It's connected to a monitor and keyboard, so i'm using it as a "laptop to a desktop" setup.

The problem is, the computer when idle or just using browsers will stay at 142F (61C) average. When using a game it can reach and stay at levels of around 208F (98C.)

I'm planning on getting cooling devices, but for the time being what should I do? Isn't this number dangerous for idling?

If by chance this number is totally normal then I apologize for the stupidity.

MSI G63vr still worth it in 2019?

    Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:59 AM PDT

Recently just bought the laptop from Best Buy for around $1300. This is my first ever gaming laptop and I pretty much bought it because of the thousands of great reviews on Best Buy and the relatively low price point. I know the laptop is a couple of years old but so far its working great. The only concern I have is if this laptop will still be viable in a few years down the road. I wanted a laptop that could keep up with learning coding/website design and AAA games. Thoughts?
