WPS only device needs to connect to Google WiFi network - suggestions? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:55 PM PDT I recently bought a google WiFi system to replace our router. We had some dead spots, and the router lacked the proper settings to play well with my wife's VPN (I guess, it didn't work and that's all I cared about). So I go out and buy this fancy google WiFi business only to find out my video doorbell is WPS only. Google does not offer WPS due to "security concerns." Any suggestions on how I can get the door bell back online? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:04 PM PDT I signed a lease with a new apartment last week and found out today that the only internet provider I can install is Verizon DSL 1-3 mbps. I currently use Spectrum/Time Warner but the building I'm moving into doesn't seem to have the wiring installed. A 1-3 mbps speed isn't ideal as I stream internet and also work from home about once a week. Do I have any other options? [link] [comments] |
Why is an AP solution better over a wired Mesh system? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:50 AM PDT The general consensus on this sub is that APs are the better solution, but the posts I've seen don't explain why they are better. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Jul 2019 08:26 PM PDT Hey guys, Sorry about the noob question but i'm in the middle of trying to figure out where this is coming from, I have a old Cyberoam CR15ing router and everytime i turn on my PC, there's a failed login attempt to the router via CLI. See this Please note .151 is my IP and the user "-" is the one that fails every time I power on my pc I've run Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and ADWcleaner. I've also tried capturing it via message analyzer but due to my incompetence i cannot decipher what I'm looking at. [link] [comments] |
Negotiation speed 10 full duplex Posted: 24 Jul 2019 08:22 PM PDT I'm at my wits end. A few months ago I noticed latency in gaming. Did a speed test and only getting 9.8 mbps. I pay for 50 with Comcast. Do all the usual steps, restart the modem, router with no change. Connect the pc directly to the modem, speed test gives 50 mbps. Dive into my router and my Netgear router is some years old but says I'm only 10 full negotiation speed to the internet... I change cables between the modem and the router. No change. Run all new cable to my basement pc crimp new ends checks out with my testing tool, still no change still 10 full. Found a thread from 5 years ago saying to put an unmanaged switch between the modem and router and BAM I get 50 down again. Take out the switch back to 10 full on the internet auto-negotiation speed and back to 9.5 mbps. Wired, wireless all devices only get 10mbps. Today I received a new router, hook it up 10 full on the internet auto-negotiation again. Is it my modem? Why am I only getting 10 full ONLY when connected to a router? Am I an idiot or something? Was given allot of 1ft crossover cables. Can I just use them in organizing my homelab? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 08:21 PM PDT I have read conflicting answers on the net on whether the crossover cables will cause problems when used as general patch cables. I just want to indiscriminately use them wherever possible in my quest to clean-up my cable gore setup. [link] [comments] |
Grounding Yagi Directional Antennas?? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:57 PM PDT Hello, I have a 5 foot mast and two Yagi directional antennas that I would like to put up on my roof for my internet (about 30ish feet up). Would the best way to ground this setup be 1, ground the mast to the grounding rod near my utility meter, and 2, ground both antennas to the grounding rod as well? Basically do I need to have 3 copper wires to my grounding rod separately? Or is it possibly to bind the cables together for aesthetics? Also maybe a dumb question but if the copper wires are covered in plastic is it possible to run them down the gutter to better hide them? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:32 PM PDT My router is cat4, huawei e5577, my phone is cat16, side by side with same card there's a large speed difference between these two. Could the category be affecting it, so the phone can connect to more bands, towers or whatever else since I'm not too savvy with networking? I'm living a touristy town so i assume the network is getting hammered especially since carriers are offering cheap mobile net sims but throughout the day I'm getting 1 to 2 mbit on the router, less sometimes and everything's so slow, but once in my phone it gets better. I tested the router in different city and there the speeds are similar so I'm just wondering whats the main reason why the router is underperforming and if buying a new one is the only solution, which would suck for right now. How to assign a static IP without admin access of a router? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:32 PM PDT I want to assign a static IP but do not have access to the router admin settings. The router is set up to do DHCP. I do have physical access to the router and also have a second router which I do have admin access. If I plug in my second router to the current router and assign the static IP in the second router would there be any IP conflicts? If there would be issues what would be the best way to assign the static IP? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:35 AM PDT I work in an old bar, and have a 2 router setup, trying to cover a large area with one ssid first router is configured as the main, second is hard wired with dhcp and nat disabled, basically an access point. my question is about the middle of the building, where most people are. (i have complaints of the wifi dropping) is it because people's devices are switching between one router to the other? should i be setting the channels on each router to a different channel? i think the answer is different channels, but can devices switch seamlessly between different routers if the situation arises? example...i walk into the building, my device connects to the closest router. I then head to the other side of the building, and into the office where the other router is. Will my device change signals on it's own? or.....if i'm in the middle of the area, will my device drop one signal for the other randomly? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:52 PM PDT I know I can't have a second router on the same network, I just want a sort of hub or modem that I can put in my room and plug all my devices into with lan cables. Then that box would just connect into one port of the router. I just want to make sure it's compatible with gigabit and that I'm getting as much speed as possible. What's my best option? Large download causes other computers in wired network to lose Internet Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:38 PM PDT We have a wired home with cable Internet. In the last six months or so, whenever one PC starts doing a large download (>1GB) all the other computers connected to the switch temporarily lose Internet or slow to a crawl. As soon as the download is complete or paused, service returns to the other PCs (generally no more than four active computers at the same time). Thinking that problem might be companies are using torrent-like technology to provide downloads, and users are forced into a large volume of upload and download streams. Or something else, such as an ISP load balancing issue. Our network had an older (unmanaged) Linksys 10/100 16-port switch, but since our cable provider just upgraded service for all customers and we are now getting 180 Mbps down (up from 60-80), time to upgrade to gigabit everything. Got the new cablemodem (Netgear CM1100) and router (NetgearAC3600 tri-band) and now shopping for a 24-port gigabit switch. Would an upgrade to a managed switch provide any benefit for this issue? Such as ability to adjust QOS settings, or some other setting? Not doing VOIP or VLANs, which is what most people seem to ID operations that benefit from managed switches. [link] [comments] |

Router halves internet speed (Wired connection) Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:35 PM PDT I apologize if this was asked before, but I tried googling the issue and couldn't find much beyond people telling others who had the same issue to upgrade the router's firmware. I'm not desperate to get it resolved, although I would love it if I could, but I'm moreso just really curious on the reason. So my friend was upgrading his network, and he discovered his old router cut his internet speed in half when he tried plugging directly into his new modem. He was was getting around 80ish Mbps from the router and about 170ish directly from the modem. He's in the market for a new router anyway since his old one is crapping out. But that got me wanting to test my set up. I have a Nighthawk AX8 running on firmware 1.0.1.62 . I get speeds of 350-450 when connected to the router using speedtest.net. When I tried plugging directly into the modem, I was getting speeds of 600 Mbps (it would peak around 780ish before coming back down though). If I log into my router and have the router do a speedtest, the router says it's also getting speeds of 600 Mbps. So why is it I get half of it when I try from my PC? My modem is a Netgear CM1000. I recently upgraded to 1Gb internet since I found out it was only about $10 more from the 150 Mbps I was paying for (which also I was getting around 80ish Mbps like my friend but I always thought it was just Xfinity and just being unlucky to not get the full speed as I thought it was rare to get it) Edit: Forgot to say from the research I did, most people were telling the other people with the same issue that it was due to the WAN port on the routher being 10/100. That can't be the case for me since I'm getting over that. [link] [comments] |
Should i string a long coaxial cable or a long Ethernet cable Posted: 24 Jul 2019 04:33 PM PDT This is probably a dumb question, and this might be posted in the wrong subreddit(please point me in the right direction if i am!), but i live in an apartment(where i can't drill holes or anything major in the walls but i can put screws in, etc. as long as i fill them in when i move out) and the only Coax drop into the apartment is in my kitchen across the apartment and in a different room from my main setup(a desktop and laptop right now, but i'm building up a home-lab in the coming months). I'm wondering if it would be logical to string a 33 and 1/3 foot long coax to my other room to put my ISP gateway in the room with my desktop and home-lab or if i should mount the gateway in the kitchen and string a 33 and 1/3 foot long Ethernet from the mounted gateway to the rest of my networking stack? which is less likely to have signal/data loss at those distances? Cheers for the help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 03:19 PM PDT I would prefer if it just had a log but I am fine if it's just running and I can see it in real time I had been experiencing some lag and freezes when I play games but I am never sure if it's the game server (They are recognized for having issues) or my internet. I am sure this is not a performance issue with my computer I can't find nothing other than sites that tell me how fast my internet is. But what I want to do is figure out if my internet is dropping [link] [comments] |
Creating a new WiFi network without wired connection Posted: 24 Jul 2019 03:07 PM PDT I currently live in an apartment where the landlord provides wifi. He lives below me and the router is presumably in his apartment, so I basically don't have physical access to the router. My signal strength is fine in my kitchen, but in the rest of the unit my phone occasionally gets dropped. Is there an easy way that I can daisy chain my own network off of his? I would like it to have a different SSID and password. The speed is about 30mbps in the kitchen which is fine for my purposes. I would like to get some smart devices and start running a Pi Hole, and I don't mind a slight speed reduction as long as I have a stronger connection. I'm wondering if this is possible without getting two routers. I"m not sure if an extender can be used with a Pi Hole, at least when I don't have access to the router. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Help with troubleshooting a MoCa topology. Posted: 24 Jul 2019 03:01 PM PDT Some background: I am trying to get high speed WiFi in a carriage house which is separated from the main home. It has an active Coax hookup back there so I figured MOCA would be the way to go. Before this, the owners had equipment rented from the local ISP and had a MOCA wireless extender in that room, and that worked fine. They decided they wanted to own their own equipment so after some research into MOCA I recommended them to buy a MOCA adapter and a MOCA wireless extender. All the networking equipment in use is listed below: Motorola MM1000 MOCA Adapter Actiontec WCB3000N Wireless Extender TP-Link-AC1750 Router MOTOROLA MB7220 Modem So I hooked up the adapter in the spot that it told me to. Coax from the wall in and a coax out to the modem. As well as an Ethernet to the router. The modem and router still work perfectly. I then go into the carriage house and set-up the wireless extender directly into Coax line coming out of the wall. Now, the extender gets internet, but its spotty. Running a infinite ping test to the router shows intermittent dropped packets. As far as i understand, the MOCA adapter should have a solid link light and the extender should have a solid Coax light. The link light on the adapter will blink like its sending information and then go dark repeatedly. And the Coax light on the extender will come on and go off randomly. I have made a topology map to aid in the troubleshooting (Sorry for its crudeness): As for the Coax topology on the outside, i do know that it goes through multiple splitters before it goes out. I do have a POE Filter that i have not placed yet, but I am not too sure where to put it. There are tamper proof caps on the POE which stops me from putting one on anyway. Would the POE Filter solve this? Should I get the ISP to install it? Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to MOCA so i am not terribly sure where to continue with my troubleshooting as I am not sure if I even setup/configured it right. Please let me know if there is any more information I need to provide. [link] [comments] |

Best Modem from Supported Modem List? Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:07 PM PDT Hello HomeNetworking, ~5000sq/ft home, 2 stories Numbe of devices will vary, but plan on using fire stick TVs for streaming (up to 6 TVs, if all were streaming), probably 2 desktop PCs (gaming/streaming), 3+ phones, 3+ tablets regularly (will scale with # of people, ~10 won't be super rare, potential peaks of ~20), potential laptops as well. Provider options are Cable ONE/Frontier - leaning towards CableONE atm. Here is a link they gave me for supported Modems - https://support.sparklight.com/hc/en-us/articles/115009158227-Supported-Cable-Modems-Residential-Only Considering getting the RT-AC88U Router to accommodate everything. Will that be good for covering the house? Also looked at the DSL-AC88U initially, but looks like it's not an approved modem for either. TL;DR: Will the RT-AC88U be a good choice? Which supported modem will pair best with it? Cheers [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Jul 2019 12:20 PM PDT I can't figure it out. 2.4 works sporadically but 5.0 is pretty good. When Wifi does work it is a hard drop in speed. 2 LAN cables read disconnected on 2 PS4's. I tried changing the channels and followed online directions to troubleshoot. Any advice? I don't know if my router is faulty though bought new. Looking for suggestions for that as well.
