The Google search widget has removed the microphone button at home screen level, replacing it with Discover and Lens.

This is highly annoying to me. Do you use these new features more than the microphone? Was the microphone not used widely?

Now, to search with your voice but without assistant, you have to open the widget, and only then the microphone will be there.

Samsung removed oxygen saturation measurement from Health app

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 09:40 AM PDT

Those of you with Samsung devices know that if you want to make use of the heart rate or oxygen saturation sensors built into your device, you use the Samsung Health app.

I recently noticed that they had removed the oxygen saturation feature from the app entirely, and also are removing the "quick measure" feature as well. The quick measure feature lets you use a gesture to measure your heart rate without having the open Samsung Health app.

I was planning on using the oxygen saturation feature on my upcoming trip to Peru where altitude sickness is a concern. Apparently Samsung integrated the oxygen saturation measurement into a "Stress Management" feature, but it is region locked and only available in the US.

Here is a screenshot of the announcement inside Samsung Health: https://imgur.com/a/Ao8kDv1

Very annoyed that they would remove a feature like this for no reason. So far it looks like the only choice I have is to sideload an older version of the Samsung Health app and disable automatic updates.

Google Maps on android has removed the Report feature when navigation mode is on.

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 09:05 AM PDT

image for reference. I am a beta tester for Google Maps and it's on 10.21.2. I just used this app yesterday for navigation and successfully report 2 speed traps and an accident. Today I turn it on and now it's gone.
Was this a widely used feature in Google maps? Did any of you use it a lot?

What is the one thing that you really want to see in Pixel 4?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 01:27 AM PDT

I really want to see multiple cameras in Pixel 4, just to see what Google Camera can achieve with multiple cameras, when it could do so much wonders with just a single camera.

What do you want to see?

I asked iPhone users why they prefer it over Android . I was surprised by some of their answers .

    Posted: 23 Jul 2019 03:48 PM PDT

Apart from the usual stuff like FaceTime and iMessage and longer software support , here are some answers that surprised me :

"I just like how the iPhone keyboard works . I tried others and could never get used to them . It just works the best for me . "

"Sure , Android is flexible and all but I don't like all the tinkering stuff. All I need is to press a button to open an app . Android is overwhelming . "

" Verizon would fix my phone's software after it kept crashing . And I couldn't uninstall unwanted software that was using up storage . Apple never does that." ( Before you start telling custom ROMs , try asking your dad to install lineage OS and lemme know how it goes )

"I can sell it after years for a much higher value when upgrading and all my stuff is still perfectly there on my new phone . As much as Android phone transfer is a thing , it isn't as seamless and convenient as iPhone backups . "

"Idk , it does it's job and runs smooth .I don't wanna mess with it too much . "

From what I gathered , Android users think that iPhone users will switch to Android for customization and freedom . But iPhone users don't really want all that stuff . They just want it to be a simple row of icons . This explains why apple has been so conservative with redesigning it's user interface. It's coz it's users hate change and relearning stuff .

Lemme know what you think .

PSA: TWRP backup does not like Android for Work profiles.

    Posted: 24 Jul 2019 06:51 PM PDT

I'm making this to hopefully save someone else an hour of searching to drill down to the cause.

TWRP backup will fail with error 255 createTarFork() process ended. Looking in the recovery.log will show you that /data/misc_ce/ is not able to be added to the backup, along with some linker symlink errors referring to /system/etc/ld.config.txt.

If you use Android for Work for whatever reason, including using an app like Island to create duplicate apps for logging in multiple accounts, this will affect you if you attempt to TWRP backup.

Removing the Android for Work profile will allow the backup to complete successfully.
