Posted: 23 Jul 2019 04:19 PM PDT I spent a lot of time googling and couldn't find a solid answer anywhere, so hoping you smart people on Reddit might have more expertise than I on this subject. I have 2 options for home internet, AT&T Fiber (75 down/20 up) or Comcast Xfinity (150 down/5 up). It'll be a 6-person home so I expressed some concern with the Fiber speed and the sales rep basically was saying that their fiber internet is way better than cable, even at lower mbps. Is that accurate? Also, is this even real fiber if the upload speed isn't the same as the download speeds? Any thoughts or references to reading material would be greatly appreciated! Iphone will not connect to 2.4GHz band wifi Posted: 23 Jul 2019 11:49 AM PDT Just an FYI post since I recently experienced this issue with my Unifi network. Current Setup: 2 Unifi AP ac lites, standard AT&T router/gateway I was setting up a smart home device and needed to connect my iPhone 7 plus to the 2.4GHz wifi. When I tried to connect, I kept getting an incorrect password error. Meanwhile I have other devices that I tested with and confirmed they are able to connect to the 2.4GHz wifi with the same creds. Got on chat with Apple support they suggested to reset network settings which I already did, and then they suggested that I do a factory reset....(I ended the chat) After a ton of frustration messing with settings on both my iPhone and the unifi controller I finally came across this thread https://community.ui.com/questions/iOS-not-able-to-connect-to-2-4GHz-WiFi-after-upgrading-to-5-10-17/36e3363e-7a28-492c-a240-92cb096119ca which mentions this is caused by the Auto-Optimize Network feature in the Unifi controller. The Fix: I turned off Auto-Optimize Network in the Unifi controller and boom iPhone connects to 2.4GHz wifi.....What a pain in the a$$ figuring this out. Hope this helps someone [link] [comments] |
Using own router in public network Posted: 23 Jul 2019 10:08 AM PDT My student flat has a shared wifi network which requires an internet login, as a result my wireless printer is unable to connect to the internet as I am not able to sign in using the printer. I am thinking of purchasing my own router, plug it into the ethernet port in the wall of my room and using that as my own router/hub for my devices. Will this work? Or do I need to locate the actual wifi router the flat uses. EDIT: It seems that there could be a chance the admin of the building might detect a rogue AP and just shut down that port. However as this flat is a private student accommodation separate from the campus, it's less likely they might do this. I can confirm it's a fully functioning Ethernet port that does not require any signing in to work. My idea was just to plug a simple google WiFi module (that I got cheap from a friend) into that port and use it as a personal room network. Damn, I just need my printer to connect to the internet. I can print etc with a wired connection but I lose all the extra functionality that I paid for - direct scan to email, print from outside of home etc. Also, is it possible to "sign in" to the WiFi connection directly from my printer? As in the sign in page only pops up when you connect to the passwordless WiFi. From what I can gather it's pretty much a no. [link] [comments] |

Question about what router or firmware everyone prefers or recommends for the following. Posted: 23 Jul 2019 05:01 PM PDT So the basics are for gaming and a roommate that uses a voip program for his work from home. I believe it's Avaya if I'm not mistaken. I would like something that would focus on real time protocol to keep latency down under load when downloading updates, games and streaming such as netflix etc. Basically •Keep bufferbloat to a minimum •Have bandwidth be equally allocated •Priority given to real time applications •Ability to adjust priority per device if needed I've heard about a lot of people using LEDE or switching to the DumaOS based routers for stuff like this. However I know if that gaming router stuff is just a gimmick or if it's worth it. TIA! [link] [comments] |
What is my best option to combine WiFi (wireless-AC) extender and Ethernet switch? Posted: 23 Jul 2019 04:46 PM PDT Hello /r/HomeNetworking. In my living room I have Ethernet wiring from the office room where my modem+wireless router is located. I wish to do two things at once:
The wired and wireless devices must be on the same LAN so that I can (for instance) use a Roku remote app on my smart phone or mirror my laptop screen ion TV. I know I could buy a WiFi extender and a Ethernet bridge separately. But is there a reasonably priced (say ~$100) solution that would combine both needs inside one device? Thank you in advance. Should I attempt to install some ethernet runs myself, or hire someone else to do it? Posted: 23 Jul 2019 08:18 AM PDT I'm looking into upgrading my home network soon, but despite the house being quite new, no ethernet runs were installed at all. I want to install a few ethernet runs, should I attempt to do these myself or get a professional in to do them? In addition, if I was to do it myself, how would I go about actually running an ethernet cable from the bottom of my house to the loft? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Asus router resets to factory default when rebooted. Posted: 23 Jul 2019 07:58 PM PDT A couple of months ago I purchased an Asus AC 3100. It has really been a great router for my small home. The only issue is every time we need to reset the internet or there is a power outage, the router resets itself back to factory settings. This is annoying because I have to recreate my network and re login to allll my devices (tv, PlayStation, Nest, etc.). Any idea of a fix? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jul 2019 07:35 PM PDT Hey all, Noob networker here. I've got a fortigate 60E as my main router/firewall. I've got a relatively easy setup.
I've got rules setup that allows my internal to talk to my IOT but not vice versa. Ive got a enterprise grade ap that I came across that I want to add into the mix. I want it to serve up my wireless internal network (192.168.1.0/24) a guest network (192.168.100.0/24), and my IOT devices (192.168.50.0/24, I want to add some wireless cams). My questions is, how do I go about laying this out? Can I put multiple subnets on one interface, or am I going to have to start vlanning this out? [link] [comments] |
RT AC68U router - Portforward issues Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:49 PM PDT I'm looking to portforward on my router, however whenever I go to log in with my private IP Address, it asks for my username and password, however when I enter, it just asks me for it again and the screen stays white. I've tried different browsers and devices and the same thing occurs. I am not totally certain if the default Username and password are correct, however I am like 90% sure they are I have a custom WiFi name and password, so resetting it is very not preferable, however if that is the only solution then ah well. I use google chrome I tried Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari I tried clearing my browser cache When I use one of the alternative IP addresses that my router could have, it takes to the router login if a different branded router that I don't have I have a separate motem owned by Motorola I am certain I am entering the username and password correctly that are stated on the router as the default login info My reasons for portforwarding include wanting to run a Minecraft server from my computer for me and my friends I've been googling but the results I've been receiving either tell me to factory reset my router (not preferable) or are just very vague and difficult to understand. If resetting is my only option then I'll just do that, but if someone could help me find an alternative, I would really appreciate. Thank you for any help you can give me! P.S. I have to stop by work and check something for probably a few hours so I may not be able to act immediately on your responses, but I appreciate your assistance. [link] [comments] |
Intermittent DNS Issues on Home WiFi with Yoga 900 Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:42 PM PDT Hello home networkers! Just a regular guy asking for some help with a specific device on my home setup. My girlfriend has a Lenovo Yoga 900 laptop that has been plagued by intermittent DNS issues on our home WiFi network only. The issue's coming and going seems completely irregular, and it manifests itself as a "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET" issue in Google Chrome (my girlfriend's browser of choice). I've now also seen this show as a "ERR_NETWORK_CHANGE" and a "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN" error in Chrome. This issue has never at places such as her old apartment (different router & modem), coffee shops, school WiFi, library, etc. -- only occurs on my modem/router combo. Maybe worth noting that it happened both before and after I moved, though I maintained the same modem/router combo through the move. At this point, I'm convinced it's a communication problem between her laptop and my router specifically. I've tried several troubleshooting steps so far, including:
Modem/Router Hardware Details: Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 Cable Modem Router (Model: C6900) Product Page: https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/cable-modems-routers/C6900.aspx Both 2.4 & 5.0 GHz networks active (on low interference channels) Lenovo Yoga 900 Hardware Details: Lenovo Yoga 900 (System Model 80MK) i7-6400U CPU Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 8260 Chipset Windows 10 Build 10.0.17134 Build 17134 I feel like it's some interfacing issue between my modem/router and the laptop, but I'm confused and at my wit's end. Any help is appreciated! I'll try and answer any replies as thoroughly and soon as possible. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Need help choosing first router - used by 4 people, 3 story house Posted: 23 Jul 2019 02:34 PM PDT I've recently set up internet with Spectrum and have received their modem. However, I need to get my own router.
Here's some I've been looking at: Netgear AC1750 Nighthawk, TP-Link AC1900, ASUS AC1700, and TP-Link AC1750. I don't know too much about routers/ networking and don't know what stats I need for my specific situation. I really would like to not buy more than I need as we are on a budget. Does anyone have thoughts on the best one of those to buy for my situation, or any other recommendations? I very much appreciate any and all help. [link] [comments] |
Can someone recommend me a router/modem? More info below. Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:18 PM PDT So I'm new to this but I'm gonna try my best to explain what my situation is and what I'm looking for. I have an Xfinity Arris TG1682G - the 2 in 1 combo Dual Band WiFi 802.11ac 2.4 & 5ghz I'm looking for a better router and/or modem with at least 4 Ethernet ports. We have over 20 devices that use the WiFi and the 4 Ethernet ports are used for my PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and surveillance camera (I really want 5 Ethernet ports, if that's possible, so I can also hook up my smart tv but it's not a deal breaker). I'm willing to spend between $300-$500. Also, how would I go about hooking it all up? Do I just plug it all in and call my ISP and that's it? I know my way around logging into my router if that helps. [link] [comments] |
Can you use an old netgear router as a wifi extender Posted: 23 Jul 2019 05:34 PM PDT I was thinking about buying a wifi extender or repeater and i came across an article that says you can use an old router for the same purpose. I have an old netgear router (5.4 Mbps WGR614 v7) is it possible to use this as a wifi extender to get better coverage at the other end of my house? I'm currently using a comcast Arris modem. For the most part my coverage is good but I would like to extend it just a little bit further if possible.(And if this is doable any further assistance you could offer would be great as I don't know anything about this kind of stuff.) Also would doing this slow down my internet speed? Thanks in advance for your help. 😃 [link] [comments] |

Need Help Choosing an Access Point Posted: 23 Jul 2019 03:56 PM PDT I currently have an ASUS router in the basement of my house. I am having trouble receiving a good signal in the back of the house, upstairs bedroom, and in my garage where I work out (about 15-20 yards off the corner of back of the house). My Father-in-law's friend set up as a favor for us, I believe he ran some ethernet cables outside to the garage. I don't know enough about home networking to choose which would be the best option. I wanted to know if I should go with the Unifi In-Wall wave 2 access point in the garage or go with Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-AC-PRO-US in the back of the house. Will, that create a better signal to the troubled areas, including upstairs? [link] [comments] |

How to set up wired connection between some of my devices, with access to main wifi network? Posted: 22 Jul 2019 08:22 PM PDT Due to the way my apartment is wired, I can't put my router in the living room, it has to be in the bedroom- But I want to be able to have my tv and PC on the same wired network (for streaming purposes) while still having access to the wifi. Basically I'm trying to figure out wtf device X would be in this literal back-of-envelope drawing. I feel like this should be so simple but I can't figure it out. Edit: to clarify I want to stream media that's on my pc to the tv but I'd also like them both to have internet access for things like YouTube on the tv, Amazon video, etc Might I be overcomplicating things? Would this lunch room paper towel drawing allow direct streaming from the PC/Plex server to the tv whilst still allowing internet access over the wifi? Would some PC setting allow this maybe? Supplied router performing better than tplink ac5400x Posted: 23 Jul 2019 10:58 AM PDT Malaysia- unifi 800mbps So I bought this router and for some reason its capped at 400 on both lan and wireless (max devices used are 13) using cat 6 cables. But when tested inmediately after startup it managed to reach 650 through lan. The supplied router is a Dir 842 and it manages to get to 800 through lan. [link] [comments] |
Lan Slow 50mbps, Modem shows 200 mbps Posted: 23 Jul 2019 02:39 PM PDT Specs Modem = Linksys CM3008 Router= Netgear N300 WNR2000 V2 I had a tech come over because i wasn't at speed, he adjusted the modem and showed me it was hitting 200, the he and i both connected to lan port on router and it hits a max of about 50 the linksys modem blinks blue (meaning sending receiving at high speeds) when plugged into desktop but blinks green when connected to router i dont know what to do I tried rebooting router restoring to factory settings so far [link] [comments] |
How to identify which ethernet ports in wall go to which ends on router? Posted: 23 Jul 2019 02:18 PM PDT My parents have their home wired with ethernet ports throughout the place in outlets in each room, with a central router/switch in one room. is there a device I can use to identify which cable/port on the router goes to which port in the wall? Even if it's a device that simply tests for a connection, where i go port by port on the router end cables until i get a ping or something [link] [comments] |
Will rewiring my house fix this issue? Posted: 23 Jul 2019 06:35 AM PDT edit: I didn't clarify well enough, I don't care abut wifi connectivity. My goal is wired connection in my room. When the modem is in my room it gets t3 timeouts every 30 minutes. So I'm asking the best way to wire my house, keep the modem close to the drop + cat6 to my room, or modem in my room with new coax to the drop. The house is 10k sqft and the modem is practically on the opposite side from the drop.It gets t3 timeouts at all hours of the day pretty much. When I put the modem in the garagenext to the drop and use a powerline adapter to wire internet back to my room, there are 0 t3 timeouts. So how should I go about wiring the house? Should the modem stay in the garageand then run cat6 through the attic all the way to my room, or redo the coax in the atticand leave the modem in my room? Also this is my first time ever getting into home networking so I don't know much of what I'm talking about,if I don't make sense please correct me. [link] [comments] |
Needing help setting up Ubiquiti m2 loco nanostations Posted: 23 Jul 2019 02:01 PM PDT Hey everyone, first off, I've watched several Youtube videos on how to do this, but they all seem to be just a little above my head, which is frustrating for me. I am trying to get internet to a building about 300-325 feet away with a few trees in between, but nothing too bad. I currently have two of the nanostations, 2 wireless routers (TP-Link N300). My home internet goes through an ATT MF279 wireless (and wired) router. I am having issues adjusting the ip addresses on the nanostations, specifically. I enter the address in the url to access the settings, but the page just times out eventually. Does anyone have simple, simple instructions (video or text) to get this completed? At this point, I've looked into paying someone to get this done for me, but the cheapest I've found is about $250. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. [link] [comments] |
